Important Note to Journalists Writing About Pamela Geller: Please Stop Calling LGF a “Conservative Site”

In which I express my irritation at false impressions
LGF • Views: 34,335

Tonight I want to draw your attention to two good pieces on hate group leader Pamela Geller, but even though I agree with the basic direction of these articles I want to make a separate point, and I’ll quote the paragraphs that I have issues with.

First, Alan Feuer in the New York Times: Pamela Geller, Organizer of Muhammad Cartoon Contest, Trumpets Results.

After getting her start in new media as a frequent commenter on the conservative website Little Green Footballs, Ms. Geller, who once worked on the business side of The New York Observer and The Daily News, began taking on issues relating to Muslims and Islam after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Second, Margaret Hartmann at New York Magazine: What You Need to Know About Pamela Geller.

Her activism was sparked by 9/11. She said she “felt guilty” that she knew little about those who attacked the country, so she started studying Islamic extremism and commenting on the conservative site Little Green Footballs (Charles Johnson, who runs the blog, has denounced her).

Again, I completely agree with the basic thrust of both of these articles, pointing out that Pamela Geller is driven by hatred of Muslims that goes far beyond any reasonable criticism.

But what do I have to do to get mainstream journalists to stop labeling Little Green Footballs as a “conservative site?” Seriously. All they have to do is read the front page to see that’s no longer remotely close to an accurate description, and it hasn’t been for many years now.

Yes, there was a time when this description was (sort of, with caveats) accurate, but that time has long passed.

Please, folks. I appreciate the mentions of LGF in these articles, but I don’t appreciate the out of date, misleading descriptions of what this site is about.

UPDATE at 5/6/15 10:12:49 am by Charles Johnson

Thanks to Margaret Hartmann for correcting her article: What You Need to Know About Pamela Geller.

A previous version of this post incorrectly identified Little Green Footballs as a conservative site. Charles Johnson notes that hasn’t been the case for many years. We regret the error.

No correction at the New York Times, although author Alan Feuer did apologize to me in an email and said he had a word limit that precluded adding any more detail.

Don’t understand what’s so fucking difficult about basic goddamn research?

Nothing wrong with stating that she got her start here, but aren’t these folks supposed to at least strive for accuracy?

No wonder so many people opt out of being engaged politically when you have this shoddy misrepresentation of basic facts.

hell, all they needed to do was state that LGF used to be a conservative site when/where she got her start and that would be enough.

This is the world where a Daily Caller writer can describe Tamir Rice as a girl, and still be gainfully employed.

Charles, it’s probably also worth adding in the piece by Fjordman that Breivik quoted in his manifesto castigating you for your denunciation of Geller et al.

I wouldn’t be here if this place was still conservative. I only started posting when it became obvious the nature of the conversation here was beginning to change. It was still in transition but posters like SFZ, spacejesus, iceweasel and jimmah especially showed that a liberal perspective could stand ground here and not only survive but actually persuade.

Started out here in the shadow of 9/11 - literally and metaphorically (began posting 10/2001 and haven’t looked back since). And I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think Charles was upright and honest about his views. I wouldn’t be here if he didn’t crack down on the hate-right that was prevalent among the counter-Jihad types that came here after 9/11. That the right wingers here came to embrace the Neo-Nazi types like Velaams Belang and BNP was a tipping point by which Charles couldn’t abide.

He properly and justifiably broke with them - calling them and Pam Geller out for their cozy relationship with the extremist right - and getting attacked for it.

Charles was principled then, and he still is.

That’s why I’m still posting here all these years later.

Many politically conscious Chicanos are looking for yet another alternative way to Celebrate Cinco de Drinko but still protest the ahistorical consumer appropriation of a battle that is meaningless to most Mexicans.

Well, Jeb Bush (aka el Yeb according to his Mexican compadres) has provided us with a warm video message of solidarity this Fifth of May to honor the “honorable” way that the Mexicans fought against foreign invaders in the Battle of Puebla. Did I mention that the message is all in Spanish?

Listo? ¡Mira el Yeb!

I’ll throw in as well. I had earlier mentioned that seeing Todd Kincannon and the TGDN idiots blaming all of their woes on Charles in 2013, while Charles laughed at them, was what led me to find out that LGF had changed from being “Little Freep Greenballs” to a sane and thoughtful (read NOT conservative) site.

But, I discovered (while looking through some files for an old Pammy Geller quote—more later) that it was actually his takedown of Dana Loesch in early 2012 during Governor Ultrasound’s reign of terror, that first caught my eye.

At the time, I wrote:
Yep, old Dana was proffering the argument that if you’ve ever had consensual sex, then from that moment on, anyone is allowed to insert whatever into your vagina and it’s the same thing.

When Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs called her on it, quoting her verbatim, she responded by saying that wasn’t what she said and calling him a pervert.

littlegreenfootballs.com

I remember asking people when Charles had changed and had started calling out the right-wingers and they directed me to his “Why I Parted Ways with the Right” piece. I read it and the other articles and interviews about it, and I started paying more attention to what he was saying. The more I read, the more I found it hard to believe Charles was ever one of them to begin with. (Call it pre-conceived notions/bias on my part—believing that most intelligent and creative people are liberals.)

Frankly, I’m glad I missed all the drama during the change, as I didn’t start reading regularly until the insanity was over. And I’ve avoided reading very many old threads, because I really like the new Charles and the people who comment here.

So, long story long, whatever it took, and however it manifested itself, I’m glad LGF is what it is today. The end. (almost)

The Pammy quote I mentioned, that was in the same post I wrote as the heinous Dana quote, occurred at about the same time, but was about Sandra Fluke:

The ever-lovely Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugged infamy, shared these delightful words, “By all accounts she is banging it five times a day. She sounds more like a prostitute to me. She must have an gyno bill to choke a horse (pun intended). Calling this whore a slut was a softball.”

It’s definitely something preventing Javascript from working. Since it works with your VPN, chances are the Chinese firewall is blocking something from loading - probably the jQuery library, which loads from a Google CDN.

And, more importantly for non-geeks, JavaScript is NOT Java.

Despite some naming, syntactic, and standard library similarities, JavaScript and Java are otherwise unrelated and have very different semantics. The syntax of JavaScript is actually derived from C, while the semantics and design are influenced by the Self and Scheme programming languages.[8]

Seeing as the Great Firewall powers-that-be don’t particularly care for Google, IIRC, I’d say that’s likely the problem right there.

I came here for a good argument.

Back when LGF was still rather conservative. But they were staunchly anti-creationist and even the conservative viewpoints I saw here were generally based on some sort of arguments and not just a shouting match.

I’ve noticed a beneficial effect of the Jade Helm hysteria and its mainstreaming into the Texas Republican Party: They are alienating a lot of veterans. It has long been true that veterans who wanted to be accepted in Oafkeeper/militia circles had to repudiate the present day military and sharply differentiate themselves from it. Many vets are understandably loathe to do this, at least the authentic ones are. With the spread of these views into the tea party at large, many veterans are finding themselves at odds with their erstwhile compatriots.

From my personal viewpoint, I have always suspected that the local rednecks and yahoos secretly despised the military. The conspiracy industry has given them an excuse to be open about it, by connecting it to their innate racism and their resulting hatred of Obama and all his works.

This latest conspiracy proves how unhinged these people truly are:

For years, they have banged the war drums, demanding we spend more and more on national defense. They hold their little flagging wavy rallies and spout some drivel about how they support the troops, while they cut benefits and assistance they promised before the wars. At the same time, they post ridiculous theories about how the military is trying to set off nukes in South Carolina while at the same time, saying the military would obviously side with conservatives in the event of a coup, because everyone knows everyone in the Armed Forces is a conservative.

Now we have an exercise, conducted by the US military, using an all volunteer force, on US soil, using the equipment and training these morons have deemed are essential to national security for decades now, and they’re suddenly worried that US troops will turn on American citizens en masse, because Obama might be planning it?

We can’t run a drone program without leaks coming out, but somehow, a brainwashing program which would turn every US solider into a Clone Trooper following Order 66 made it by everyone with no one noticing?

These people are beyond ridiculous. They’re dangerously psychotic.

I have not seen anybody in the GOP come out and state that these CTs surrounding Jade Helm are complete nonsense. They had their chance long ago to challenge or at least distance themselves from this brand of attention-seeking loonies but failed to do so because they did not want to get into a shouting match with some goombah in a tricorne hat holding a Gadsen flag.

Now those very loonies have hijacked the party and the few semi-sane people remaining are just holding on for dear life.

I am reluctant to say so in public, but I am more sure than ever that this will lead to violence. Reality and tea party delusion just cannot co-exist for any length of time when the latter reaches a certain critical mass. I think liberals and progressives in red states, especially Texas, should think very seriously about arming themselves. Bundy Ranch really happened. There is nothing to keep it from happening again, and on a gigantic scale. Arming ourselves would not in any way be the same thing the crazed militias and ammosexuals are doing. They think they can hold off the federal government and take control of society, we need only protect ourselves from vigilantes and marauders until lawful authority can be restored. The nuts are already talking openly about eliminating liberals and other “collaborators” after the shit hits the fan and they, of course, have neutralized federal power.

I really dread what could happen in the event of a major natural and/or man-made catastrophe that disrupts utilities, communications and civil authorities over a large area or for a large population.

I can well imagine that these armed goombahs will see any attempt at restoring basic services and getting things under control as a coup attempt and come out shooting.

David Dewhurst: Suspicion of Our Own Troops Must Stop

To prepare his troops even better, Major Gen. Darsie Rogers, 1st Special Forces Command, continually seeks new, unfamiliar and challenging environments as training grounds for his new and veteran soldiers. I told him that Texans were looking forward to supporting them as they utilize our state as one of this year’s training sites. It appears I may have spoken too soon, as some Texans have inexplicably gone on the offensive against this effort to train our troops.

As I reflect on the several hundred officers and enlisted men I personally met this week, I can enthusiastically say each and every one is an American patriot who serves our country with distinction. They love their country and they’re willing to die to defend your liberties. Unfortunately, some Texans have projected their legitimate concerns about the competence and trustworthiness of President Barack Obama onto these noble warriors.

This must stop. As a veteran of the Vietnam era, I remember too well a climate where troops who had bravely served were met with insults and derision when they came home. It has taken our country decades to change that, and a small but vocal contingent of Texans who would call themselves patriotic are on the verge of ushering that mindset back into vogue. I am furious at the thought, and every right-minded Texan should be as well.Instead of viewing our hard-working troops with suspicion or greeting them with insults, let’s increase our prayers for them and their families as we send a message of welcome and encouragement. Let’s stand together and open our arms in grateful support for U.S. Special Forces and the other units who will participate in their training. When they arrive, they should be greeted by a freshly-swept welcome mat, not suspicion and angry protest. Our nation’s finest deserve our best, and they’ll get it from this Texan.

There seems to be something of a class divide in the tea party over the Jade Helm craziness. The ruling circle, typified by Dewhurst and the local gentry, is more likely to scoff at the conspiracy theories while their serfs, the deluded working and middle class types who give the tea party its mass, seem to swallow the CTs hook, line, and sinker.
Abbott is obviously conflicted over this, but partisan pandering has apparently led him to side with the ignorant masses rather than his fellow grifters and profiteers.

OK, two things I learned from reading comments:

(1) Canadians are much smarter than Texans;

(2) Even a vaunted newspaper like the NYT isn’t even bothering to fact check everything.

(Edit) and since I’m numbering, this:

(3) Margaret Hartmann is actually the senior editor at NY Magazine.

Oh, and not one word about Pam Geller’s half ownership of Universal Auto World, which was selling vehicles to drug dealers and other crooks and laundering money, which subsequently got her husband in trouble and dead, and which she escaped any kind of criminal charges.

Anyone who thinks Pam Geller was just some “housewife” while owning that dealership with her husband is deluded. She just knew how to get the cash out of the marriage while her husband wound up dead.

In which the NYT itself is mentioned as having a “profile” on Pam Geller: “What isn’t as well-known, and was whitewashed from her Times profile, is that the basis of her wealth is a criminal enterprise.”

“Geller was listed as a co-owner of the dealership though she denied any knowledge of the fraud. However, the head of the local D.A.’s economic crimes unit is quoted as saying that the owners of the dealership knew about, and possibly actively organized the fraud, which implies that either Geller had to know about it or willfully kept herself in the dark:

“Peress said the corruption at Universal “went all the way to the top.”

“So Pam’s denials ring hollow. If the origins of her wealth are based on a criminal enterprise is it any wonder that her political views are equally corrupt?” More

richardsilverstein.com

Obviously, she’s had the ill-gotten gains and opportunity to continue her political corruption, unabated and with no real consequences. None of this is new to this criminally-minded putz.

123 Justanotherhuman  May 6, 2015 3:26:47am

I find it very odd that Geller divorced Oshry the same year the story broke about the corruption at Universal Auto World and a year later her husband died, from a heart attack. It’s also very odd that the criminal prosecution for the fraud and corruption at that dealership has not gone forward since 2008.

Additionally, bank records are said to have gone to the Oshry home, and not kept at the dealership, which is required by law.

Furthermore, why were the assets of the dealership not seized in connection with the criminal case?

Because the police and prosecutors, for the most part, don’t have the time, resources, or training to prosecute white-collar crime.

Back from a busy day doing real world, fun things for a change.

So, here’s the weird thing about my Javascript/JQuery problem. All I need to do is run with a VPN for a while. After closing the VPN and using my normal connection, everything works hunky-dory. Maybe there’s something that has to load first that’s being blocked. Have no idea.

And yes, China now is completely anti-Google. Every single Google service and API is blocked, so any site using Google search engine for its own searches is bollixed. Many Chinese users are in the same boat, since so many businesses rely on Google services. Thus, the government has basically driven a significant number of Chinese to use VPNs to “climb the Great Firewall.” Talk about unintended consequences, because that same VPN allows access to foreign news media and uncensored Google searches.

Net nannies are just plain dumb.

Since when is an actual comedy troupe like Monty Python anything like what Pam Geller does?

This tweet, was of course retweeted by Jim Hoft.

Python skewers religion, established beliefs, and isn’t trying to get people killed or want to see others killed because they don’t believe what they do.

Geller wouldn’t mind seeing a global conflagration where non Muslims band together to kill Muslims the world over (that’d be a world war the likes of which we haven’t seen in more than 70 years and would make the GWoT look like kids’ play).

Geller, Spencer, and the rest of the counter Jihadis aren’t content to call out just those who engage in jihad. They’re making all Muslims the enemy.

There are more than 1.5 billion Muslims in the world.

That’s a whole lot of people who Geller and the rest are saying are the enemy.

GWB, for all his faults, recognized that going to war against all Muslims was nuts, and rightfully called out the extremists - terrorists - for what they were and that the US and the West (and indeed the rest of the world) would go after those who were responsible. Obama followed suit and used virtually the same language as GWB, and the shrieking from the far right loons was ear splitting in how debased from reality it was. Here was Obama using the exact say descriptions in the ongoing protection of the US against terrorist threats from those claiming to carry out the acts in the name of Islam, and they claim that he’s a secret Muslim or is actively promoting the Muslim agenda, etc. That’s even as Obama’s UAV campaign has reaped far more terrorists from the far reaches of the globe than GWB’s efforts. Obama’s overseen taking out bin Laden and countless others who were notable targets in al Qaeda and affiliated organizations.

Yet, this isn’t enough for Geller and her ilk. They want total war against an entire religion.

It’s nuts. But that’s where they are.

I think the SPLC is pretty reliable.

splcenter.org

Unfortunately, since it was a “local” story at the time, there doesn’t appear to be that much coverage except in papers like the Daily News & NY Post and since, she worked on the financial side for the Daily News, she wasn’t even mentioned in their report that I could find online. She was also an associate publisher at the NY Observer.

nytimes.com

nydailynews.com

nypost.com

autonews.com

I’m sure Geller had enough connections that she could call in a few favors to keep her name out of it.

Even this 10/8/10 piece in the NYT doesn’t mention Universal Auto World, which had happened 3 yrs earlier, although it mentioned her marriage to Oshry and the details of her divorce.

nytimes.com

“Colleagues at The Observer remembered her as brassy and vulgar — not an easy fit with the salmon-colored broadsheet’s effete ethos. Ms. Geller recalled pushing the publisher to endorse Rudolph W. Giuliani in his first mayoral bid, and being satisfied when the paper issued no endorsement. Married in 1990 to Michael H. Oshry, a wealthy car dealer from the Five Towns who was himself the son of a wealthy car dealer from the Five Towns, she quit in 1994 to stay home with her daughters.

“Ms. Geller got nearly $4 million when the couple divorced in 2007, and when Mr. Oshry died in 2008, there was a $5 million life-insurance policy benefiting her four daughters, said Alex Potruch, Mr. Oshry’s lawyer. She also kept some proceeds from the sale of Mr. Oshry’s $1.8 million house in Hewlett Harbor.

“Pamela wanted to live in the city,” Mr. Potruch said. “He made certain that she had sufficient support to buy a co-op in the city and survive there without having to work.” More

I’ll testify that LGF isn’t a conservative site—otherwise I wouldn’t be here.

Now to be honest, when I started following political-oriented blogs, LGF was frequently mentioned as a place to avoid, and I did. Therefore I don’t know what it was like in that era. Then people would talk about or link to something here, and other people would say “WTF?” “Oh, didn’t you hear, Charles Johnson went sane!”

It was some time after that that I actually would check out a link to LGF, and only recently have I started reading it regularly, so first impressions can be lasting.

What’s really cool is that these same thrusters, if you didn’t use them up for launch escape, are meant to land the spacecraft (on land) with no parachutes. NASA, of course, is insisting on any of their flights being limited to four crew (instead of seven) and landing by parachute, on water.

I’m in the middle of reading a book on WWI, so I’ve been looking up info. The number of casualties was horrific and that was before we had the WMD we have now. On top of that, it didn’t involve religion, nor did it involve picking a fight with an “enemy” large numbers of whom are citizens of your own country and live among you.

In WWI An estimated total of 15+ million people were killed or prisoners/missing, with another 21+ million wounded, every single one of them people with families like yours & mine. The sort of war Geller & Co. desire would most likely result in tens of millions of deaths, not all of the Muslim.

Geller & Co. also claim a great love for Israel. What do they suppose would happen to it if the West started a “War against Islam”? What sort of slaughter & outright genocide would we see of Muslims living in the West and non-Muslims living in Muslim lands?

I don’t think these assholes have ever really sat down and thought about it—either that, or they have some fantasy in their heads where it’s all “shock & awe” and the non-Muslims come out largely unscathed. It’s a fairytale.

Such a war would make WWI would look like a walk in the park.

Seriously. Some of these people need to read history. 1919 in particular was a bad year for white racial riots, violence against blacks.

Been reading C. Vann Woodward’s The Strange Career of Jim Crow. Book was written in the mid ‘50’s I believe, before Jim Crow ended but after concerted opposition to it began to emerge and after Brown vs. Board of Ed. It’s such a pleasure to read good history, well written, great narrative style, that also buttresses the story with data. Reminds me of V.O. “Riot” is a dogwhistle term. It only goes one way. If the oppressed lash out against their treatment, that’s a “riot”. Lynchings were just the natural order of things being carried out. That’s why the term “Police Riot” like Baltimore or Chicago 1968 shocks people so much.

Netflix has an excellent documentary “The First World War from Above,” that incorporates some very interesting footage shot in 1919 by a French dirigible pilot of the battlefields. You might also Google “Verdun missing villages.” Nine villages were completely obliterated, 300,000 French and German soldiers lost their lives in an area of 50 square miles. It is estimated that, at some places on the Verdun ridge, 10 artillery shells landed on every square centimeter of ground.

Yeah, it was a toss-up between the two for me, but I chose Macmillan because I liked her writing style and the way she described how things were in Europe before the war—attitudes, changes that had occurred, (national) friendships & rivalries, etc.—i.e. it provided the context I needed to understand things. What I got from reading about WWI was it could have been avoided but for (1) an overly powerful military convincing (2) a weak, vainglorious leader to waste valuable men and resources on three fronts at once. That, and most of the leaders of France and Britain assuming that no one would be crazy enough to violate Belgium’s neutrality and invade France.

The biggest lost opportunity that would have made for a very different world today: Everybody likes to rag on Winston Churchill for the Gallipoli fiasco, but if the Royal Navy had…you know…followed their fucking orders the Straits were completely undefended—they could have sailed right in, taken Constantinople under fire from the rear, and knocked Turkey out of the war in one fell swoop. That was Churchill’s idea.

Instead, they refused to believe the Straits were undefended, dithered around until they were, tried to sail in, got shot at, turned and ran. Then they decided to land troops on the Gallipoli peninsula and attack overland. They could have seized the high ground in the center in two hours. Instead they dithered around till the Turks infiltrated, and then sat there for months as sitting ducks while the Navy refused to stand in close enough to defend them. What a missed opportunity.

There seems to be a glut of WW1 series you can find on the various “history” channels on cable. Most seem to be very Ken Burns-ish and heavily use anecdotal descriptions (diary entries and reports) to give a very personal view of the war with a veneer of historical narration to provide some context and additional editorial comment.

From the 2-3 I have watched some are fairly good, while others show either a lack of research, or simply don’t care about the accuracy of their data, since they include multiple factual errors and appear to be hung up on some older views of the history.*

* - Or are guilty of viewing century-old thought through a modern lens. As an example there is the “standard” view of the French and English generals being unthinking butchers who just sent men “over the top” time and again to get slaughtered. Things are a bit more nuanced than that.

Oh, and if you want a not very thick book that covers just a segment of the war with some good explanation of what is going on I can recommend Peter Hart’s _Bloody April_. It’s covering about two months in 1917 when the RFC (Royal Flying Corps) took horrendous losses during the Battle of Arras. This was also the time period that Richtofen and the Flying Circus were in their infancy.

This is a good “in-the-mud” perspective from an artillery captain. IIRC, most of the time he had no idea of what was going to happen next.

They also wouldn’t know (and wouldn’t care) that according to Pew Research:

10% of Americans own a smartphone but do not have broadband at home, and 15% own a smartphone but say that they have a limited number of options for going online other than their cell phone. Those with relatively low income and educational attainment levels, younger adults, and non-whites are especially likely to be “smartphone-dependent.”

And they use their phones for such frivolous things as searching for jobs, applying for jobs, etc.

And at this point if you’re renting rather than owning your place of residence a smart/mobile phone is the better option than paying for a land line.

And I don’t know at this point if houses are required to have land lines anymore. Or at least I think states like PA and NY required an occupied house to have a working land line at one time.

I imbibed that viewpoint with my mother’s milk like everybody else. John Terraine’s work was very helpful in overcoming that prejudice.

Of course, trench warfare was the Confederate States Army’s great contribution to military science—and the entanglements that made attack near impossible were more or less invented by Burnside in East Tennessee. Yeah I thought it was good since it covered all fronts. Usually these documentaries have a heavy focus on the Western Front at the expense of the lesser covered fronts such as the Eastern one, the African front, and the Middle East. That documentary covers the fact that it truly was a world war.

re: #241 Higgs Boson’s Mate

Netflix has an excellent documentary “The First World War from Above,” that incorporates some very interesting footage shot in 1919 by a French dirigible pilot of the battlefields. You might also Google “Verdun missing villages.” Nine villages were completely obliterated, 300,000 French and German soldiers lost their lives in an area of 50 square miles. It is estimated that, at some places on the Verdun ridge, 10 artillery shells landed on every square centimeter of ground.

The whole battle area, which covers just 7.7 square miles, was turned into a national forest after the war. The rangers who manage it still find human remains almost every week and turn them over to the giant Douamont Ossuary. The latter holds the remains of approximately 130,000 unidentified dead from the 1916 battle.
The most shocking thing to me when I visited Verdun is how small the battle area really is. The whole thing is visible from the summit of Douamont and you can walk across it in less than 2 hours.

What was neat about that one is the theme music they used was an actual composition written by a British soldier who died in the war. A really moving piece too. It made me immediately think of the small villages that lost nearly all their young men due to the war.

Yeah, The Military Channel also used to air it, that’s were I saw it originally. The book, The First World War by Hew Strachan, is pretty good too.

I think there is one series out there with a title like “Apocalypse”. I saw an episode where they completely skipped over Nivelle ever being C-in-C of the French Army. Went straight from Joffre to Petain according to the narrative.

And heavily concentrated on the trench warfare on the Western Front and the standard and simple “butcher” analysis of the French and English leadership.

Caveat: By modern or later war standards they were butchers since they took large losses in frontal attacks and a relative inability to make a breakthrough of the opposing lines that could be exploited in any way.

However, they were not ignorant of this fact and were searching for the right combination to get their infantry intact over no-man’s land and make a successful offensive with fewer losses. The artillery work got more and more complex as the trench war went on. Aircraft use got more sophisticated. The Germans worked on infiltration “stormtrooper” tactics, while the French and British went towards the tank as a new way to aid the troops.

The other factor is that the Allies were pretty much forced to be the offensive party on the Western Front - and thus likely to take greater losses. The alternative would be to sit pat with the Germans occupying most of Belgium* and a part of France. And I guess waiting for the blockade to bring the Germans to the negotiations table?

* - And taking back the Belgium ports was one reason for the British Ypres offenses. The Germans were operating U-boat flotillas from there.

Sepoy Rebellion. One of the sparks that triggered it was the issuing of new pre-greased cartridges for rifles that supposedly were lubricated using tallow (beef) and pork fat. There were a number of other issues of course regarding the East India Company, Indian politics, etc.

And being muzzle-loaders of that time you loaded the gun by biting open a paper cartridge, pouring the gunpowder down the barrel, and then jamming the paper and ball down the barrel afterwards. The new rifle used a Minie Ball and was a tighter fit. Thus the need for greasing the cartridge paper.

For what it’s worth and maybe someone with a better understanding of names can help but it’s “Good.” It really was a surprising find because A) as I said I had thought my maternal grandmother was all Irish in background and B) the fact that this family emigrated from Alsace to modern day Pittsburgh during the French Revolution and had spent sometime near Philly too.

Yes, and yes. But I think the distinction needs to be drawn for many people out there.
If I may share a brief anecdote- My mother had a stroke which destroyed her sense of balance, so she couldn’t stand or walk unaided, even with a walker. Nonetheless, she would try to walk by herself, and I’d tell her she couldn’t walk so she needed to wait for someone to help her. That went on for a couple weeks until one day she responded to me by saying that yes she could walk, she had just done so earlier and I realized that we were both leaving the word “alone” out of our sentences. She had walked earlier, though leaning heavily on me. I told her she was right, but that she hadn’t, and couldn’t, walk by herself and that ended the problem.

The point is that there will always be people who willfully conflate providing a cake and making a statement, but I think many people who haven’t thought about it much will see the difference when it is pointed out in clear terms.

Sure enough and to be fair, I do try to explain the distinction between the hypothetical Muhammad baked good and the gay marriage baked good scenarios. I don’t automatically get mad but I do get frustrated when they say absurd crap that “forcing” a Christian baker to bake a cake for a gay couple is like forcing an African American businessman to serve the KKK.

They vaguely remember the Indian Rebellion of (whenever-it-was) which was in part caused by the British ammunition using lard and tallow as a lubricant. Since using it involved tearing something off with your teeth (can you tell I’m not a military historian?) the locals didn’t want to violate their dietary laws.

The thing is that it would be voluntary ingestion-not being shot with it by someone else. That part they are confusing with vampires and magic.

That gets into American pop culture via the 50s movie King of the Khyber Rifles.

Hmm, and probably a movie of that era covers the execution method of “blowing from a gun”. Which I do recall seeing in a Flashman novel and some mentions here and there in other historical reading.

Wikipedia Link

In short a person was executed by being tied across the muzzle of a cannon, and then firing the cannon. Associated with the British handling rebels from the Sepoy Rebellion in India, but has older precedents going back to the Mughals. And reportedly still done in Afghanistan on occasion even as late as 1929.

I wonder who the first general was who said, “Wait a minute. After the first 5 minutes we can’t see the other soldiers and they can’t see us through all the smoke-what if we split up so they wouldn’t have a solid target to shoot?” He probably would have been court martialed for creative thought.

You need only to look at what happened in China a couple years ago not long after Newtown to show how stupid this is. Yes, more deaths occur due to fists and kicks than rifles but that doesn’t take away from the fact that having a rifle makes it a lot easier to kill a lot of people at once which is exactly why the Alex Holmes, Adam Lanzas, Elliott Rodgers use those as weapons as opposed to their fists. Why gun fuckers don’t get that, I don’t know. Probably because they have a sexual fixation with guns.

When Queen Victoria saw verified reports of atrocities by British soldiers in India, she refused to believe them. “British boys wouldn’t do such things,” she said.
Both sides were gulty of the most horrible atrocities, one of the worst being the massacre of captured British women and children during the siege of Cawnpore. The local honcho, one Nana Sahib, ordered the hostages murdered as British forces closed in on the city. The rebel Indian troops flatly refused to take part, at which point butchers and ruffians were brought in from the local market to do the dirty work. About 120 women and children were killed and dismembered in the house where they were held. The remains were thrown down a well in an effort to hide the evidence. British and East India Company troops arrived within a few days, discovered the massacre, and went on a wild rampage of revenge. This included the murder and torture of some of the very soldiers who had stood up to Nana Sahib and refused to kill the women and children.

And from the ever-dwindling-in-sanity Washington Post editorial board, talking about Carson and Fiorina:

…both candidates are capable people who have impressed on the pre-declaration stump…

As of today, Ms. Fiorina and Mr. Carson are politicians on the national stage; we look forward to seeing what they can do.

The editorial also says (about non-politician candidates):

…some last longer in the arena than others. Ross Perot and Herman Cain — computer and pizza magnates, respectively — both had good runs, for example.

Quite the comparison there, WaPo. Cain announced in May, 2011 and withdrew that December; won some whackadoodle straw polls, and led for a nano-second in Zogby and Rasmussen polls.

Perot (nutcase that he was) was on the ballot in all 50 states and pulled in almost 19% of the popular vote in 1992. I’d say his run was a bit better than Cain’s, but what do I know.

Speaking of antlers - park rangers had to do a bunch of rescues a few days ago as people who were racing to gather antlers for resale in Bridger Teton National Forest outside Jackson WY and the Grand Teton NP and National Elk Refuge. A horse drowned and a bunch of people needed to be rescued when their boat capsized trying to cross a river swollen with runoff.

usnews.com

National park rangers and other federal law enforcement officers kept watch without intervening as dozens of antler hunters in western Wyoming gathered for what turned out, for some, to be an ill-fated rush to cross an ice-cold raging mountain river at night.

Hands-off as it was, it was standard policy on Western federal lands whenever foolishness committed by the public falls short of, say, harassing a 3,000-pound bison.

“We don’t try to restrict people’s access or activities unless it’s obviously dangerous,” Grand Teton National Park spokeswoman Jackie Skaggs said. “And I don’t think there was any assumption by the rangers that some of these people were trying to do something that was inordinately dangerous.”

Amid Friday’s midnight frenzy to access antlers recently shed by elk in Bridger-Teton National Forest, a horse being ridden across the Gros Ventre River from Grand Teton drowned, and a small aluminum boat carrying five people capsized.

Two of the boaters had to be rescued by rangers and law enforcement. The other three made it across the 75-foot-wide river and built a fire to warm up, only to capsize again on the way back.

No one was seriously hurt. Federal officials say they probably will review what happened as they often do following multi-agency rescue efforts.

For many antler hunters, simply getting out in nature is the best part. For others, it’s money. Antlers shed by elk every spring can fetch more than $15 a pound and as much as $1,000 for a large, matching, decorative set.

The river crossing has grown into something of an annual tradition since 2010. State officials were concerned about antler hunters harassing elk weakened by winter, so they began banning the collecting of antlers in western Wyoming from Jan. 1 through April 30.

The VIN number matches, the numerals are authentic HD VIN numerals.
Only difference between our motor and the one in Arizona is the placement of the final digit. The AZ VIN is perfectly level (as if all the numbers were stamped as one piece), ours is slightly off (which is what happens when numbers are stamped individually, which is how HD does it).

The investigators are scratching their heads now and need to confer with experts at Harley Davidson.

I just spent nearly the whole morning going back and forth about Jade Helm with people on Facebook.

It seems a lot of people who are ‘concerned’ about the exercise are completely oblivious to the utter insanity of what they’re so concerned about.

I brought up ISIS training alongside US Special Forces, the Chinese Army, Wal-Mart prisons, president for life Obama, the whole nine.

A few people said they never heard of any of that, but they’re just ‘concerned’ because reasons.

I’m running out of words to describe how retarded they’re acting over this.

You should tell them you have it on good authority - from a well-connected Muslim online acquaintance who shall forever have to remain nameless - that President-for-life Obama has decreed that the US Special Forces, in cooperation with the People’s Liberation Army and under the overall command of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the forces of the Islamic State, are gonna throw their asses into the nearest Wal-Mart owned and operated FEMA camp at 1600 on Thursday, July 23rd.

I wonder who the first general was who said, “Wait a minute. After the first 5 minutes we can’t see the other soldiers and they can’t see us through all the smoke-what if we split up so they wouldn’t have a solid target to shoot?” He probably would have been court martialed for creative thought.

Combination of factors at play. There is an inherent conflict because you would like to split up the troops to avoid being a target, but you also need the compact formation for massing your own firepower, being able to attack/defend if it gets to bayonet range or are attacked by cavalry, and perhaps more importantly - be close enough to maintain unit cohesion and be able to handle the unit using voice commands.

As the artillery got more dangerous and rifled muskets pushed the ranges out the cavalry threat diminished and there was greater desire to use heavy skirmish lines. Plus with the advent of magazine and breech-loading rifles the infantry firepower itself increased as well and made compact infantry formations even more vulnerable.

Followed fairly quickly by the various armies dropping bright colors for their standard uniforms.

Significantly, the question of the use of executive authority on immigration is central to the Latino electorate.

While the country’s attention is on policing and incarceration, what would Clinton commit to do about the subhuman conditions of immigration detention? Will she continue to allow local police to enforce immigration law, driving a strong wedge between the police and community?

While we still hope for legislation, I need to know from Clinton that my 70-year-old mother will not be deported away from me or her grandchildren.

Cesar Vargas, a CUNY School of Law graduate, immigrated from Mexico when he was 5. He is co-director of the advocacy group Dream Action Coalition . He has protection from deportation through Obama’s deferred action program.

“Bob Dylan saw Doug as authentic right out of the box in the middle of Doug’s most fake period, trying to pass himself off as British with the Sir Douglas Quintet,” Joe Nick Patoski, director of All About the Groove, a forthcoming doc on Sahm said in an interview. “Dylan saw completely through that.”

Meeting sometime in 1965, the pair found solace in each other’s company. Dylan, forever in search of the authentic in American music, found the real thing in the football-chinned San Antonian. Sahm was looking for just the same, what he called “the groove” in his own argot. Performing with Hank Williams Sr. and learning from San Anto soul icon Spot Barnett, Sahm had a pitch-perfect ear and a flawless track record in real-deal music.[…]

Why Operation Jade Helm 15 is freaking out the Internet — and why it shouldn’t be

The mission is vast both geographically and strategically: Elite service members from four branches of the U.S. military will launch an operation this summer in which they will operate covertly among the U.S. public and travel from state to state in military aircraft. Texas, Utah and a section of southern California are labeled as hostile territory, and New Mexico isn’t much friendlier.

That’s the scheme for Jade Helm 15, a new Special Operations exercise that runs from July 15 to Sept. 15. Army Special Operations Command announced it last week, saying the size and scope of the mission sets it apart from many other training exercises.

“The nature of warfare is always changing and U.S. Army Special Operations Command’s mission is to make certain the Army’s various Special Operations Forces are trained, equipped and organized to successfully conduct worldwide special operations in support of our nation’s interests,” Army Lt. Col. Mark Lastoria, a command spokesman, said in an e-mail. “Training exercise Jade Helm is going to assist our Special Operations Soldiers and leadership in refining the skills needed against an ever changing foreign threat.”

Yep. But according to the WaPo editorial board, he’s just like Herman Cain.

I believe it was during that campaign that I started losing all faith in the media. It was because of their condescending, mocking coverage of James Stockdale, Perot’s VP. Through all the crass, insulting coverage of Stockdale and the VP debate, they totally ignored the man’s intelligence, his military expertise, his POW story (7-1/2 years)

Stockdale created and enforced a code of conduct for all prisoners which governed torture, secret communications, and behavior. In the summer of 1969, he was locked in leg irons in a bath stall and routinely tortured and beaten. When told by his captors that he was to be paraded in public, Stockdale slit his scalp with a razor to purposely disfigure himself so that his captors could not use him as propaganda. When they covered his head with a hat, he beat himself with a stool until his face was swollen beyond recognition. When Stockdale was discovered with information that could implicate his friends’ “black activities”, he slit his wrists so they could not torture him into confession.

Yeah, media, good call to mock and ridicule such a man.

He kinda addresses that:

Although the former U.S senator has good rhetoric, good rhetoric did not prevent President Obama from becoming the “deporter-in-chief,” or Bill Clinton from leaving behind a terrible record that contributed to the criminalization of immigrant communities.

With Congress facing government shutdowns almost every month, Clinton would need to cut through partisan gridlock to protect families, like mine, with every tool available to the executive in the absence of legislative action. She would need to keep and expand relief programs that protect Dreamers — those like me who are undocumented after coming here as children — and parents.

This won’t be easy, however, as U.S. Reps. Steve King (R-Iowa) and Louie Gohmert (R-Tex.) will decry even the most modest steps toward a functioning immigration system as “amnesty.”

Not with your eloquence, of course.
