Here’s the latest image from NASA’s Dawn Mission, now in orbit around the protoplanet Ceres in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, with a clear shot of those mysterious bright spots first sighted months ago. The composition of the material causing these bright areas is still unknown as of this writing.

Seriously, though…..what it is that? It seems to be something reflecting the light. Some kind of metal deposit, perhaps?

NASA Finds Mysterious Bright Spot on Dwarf Planet Ceres: What Is It?
space.com January 23, 2015:

A strange, flickering white blotch found on the dwarf planet Ceres by a NASA spacecraft has scientists scratching their heads.

The white spot on Ceres in a series of new photos taken on Jan. 13 by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, which is rapidly approaching the round dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. But when the initial photo release on Monday (Jan. 19), the Dawn scientists gave no indication of what the white dot might be.

“Yes, we can confirm that it is something on Ceres that reflects more sunlight, but what that is remains a mystery,” Marc Rayman, mission director and chief engineer for the Dawn mission, told space.com in an email.

My guess is micrometeorite impacts of recent vintage, revealing the lighter material underneath.

As an aside, came across this and went holy jeebus:

That’s a whole lot of bomb making. The bomb used in OKC was equivalent of 5,000 lbs of TNT. We’re talking more than 50,000 pounds of TNT used to blow up targets around Ramadi by ISIL.

‘Bright Spot’ on Ceres Has Dimmer Companion
NASA, February 25, 2015:

Dwarf planet Ceres continues to puzzle scientists as NASA’s Dawn spacecraft gets closer to being captured into orbit around the object. The latest images from Dawn, taken nearly 29,000 miles (46,000 kilometers) from Ceres, reveal that a bright spot that stands out in previous images lies close to yet another bright area.

“Ceres’ bright spot can now be seen to have a companion of lesser brightness, but apparently in the same basin. This may be pointing to a volcano-like origin of the spots, but we will have to wait for better resolution before we can make such geologic interpretations,” said Chris Russell, principal investigator for the Dawn mission, based at the University of California, Los Angeles.

To be fair, Ceres is pretty dark—an albedo of ~.05 overall, IIRC, so it wouldn’t take much to look brighter than that. Could be ice, melted by a recent impact and refrozen nice and flat.

Mystery of Ceres’ bright spots grows
Nature, The International Weekly Journal of Science, April 13, 2015:

Scientists say that the bright spots might be related to ice exposed at the bottom of impact craters or some type of active geological features. The areas glimmer tantalizingly in a new full-colour map of Ceres that was obtained in February, but not released until the conference. The map uses false colours to tease out subtle differences on the otherwise dark surface of Ceres.

One morning in July 2011, while exploring arid badlands near the western shore of Lake Turkana in Kenya, a team of archaeologists took a wrong turn and made a big discovery about early human technology: Our hominin ancestors were making stone tools 3.3 million years ago, some 700,000 years earlier than previously thought.

The findings promise to extend knowledge of the first toolmakers even deeper in time, probably before the emergence of the genus Homo, once considered the first to gain an evolutionary edge through stone technology. More

The Texas conservative said he opposed efforts by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) to pass a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) to fight Islamic State militants because, Gohmert said, the 2001 authorization gave the president “all the authority he could possibly need.”

Gohmert, as Right Wing Watch observed, complained that a new AUMF gave the president too much authority while at the same time helping to “tie his hands in ways a good president would not need.”
