150 Years After the Civil War, South Carolina Finally Surrenders
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott are now — finally — calling for the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the state Capitol.
And this is a good thing. No doubt about that.
But it’s also an absolute disgrace that it took the murders of nine people and an overwhelming public outcry for them to realize how horribly insulting and wrong it was that the flag was there at all. Ever. Because the Confederate flag didn’t just suddenly become a symbol of slavery and oppression and treason.
Good on Haley and Graham for doing the right thing. But before we get too congratulatory, let’s also remember: Haley, Graham, and the Republican Party had to be forced into this, kicking and screaming the whole way.
Remember, though: this still needs to be voted on by the South Carolina state legislature. The Post and Courier is asking every member where they stand on removing the Confederate flag, and posting the results here.
