Sorry to go off topic so soon, but Texas is derping again:
Abbott says state employees may withhold benefits from same sex couples
[…]
In a letter released Thursday afternoon, Abbott ordered heads of state agencies to prioritize religious freedom, writing that no adverse action should be taken against a state official “on account of the person’s act or refusal to act that is substantially motivated by sincere religious belief.”
“This order applies to any agency decision, including but not limited to granting or denying benefits, managing agency employees, entering or enforcing agency contracts, licensing and permitting decisions, or enforcing state laws and regulations,” Abbott wrote.
[…]
“In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision, the law’s promise of religious liberty will be tested by some who seek to silence and marginalize those whose conscience will not allow them to participate in or endorse marriages that are incompatible with their religious beliefs,” Abbott wrote. “As government officials, we have a constitutional duty to preserve, protect, and defend the religious liberty of every Texan.”
Seriously twisted, Abott is.

OT, but today has been very bad out side the US, with 4 DAESH sponsored attacks.
A beheading in France (1 killed), a mass shooting in Tunisia (37+ dead), a suicide bombing at a Kuwaiti Shia Mosque (24 dead) , and a massive Massacre in Kobani (146 dead).
In addition, al-Shabaab, attacked and seized and African Union base, killing 70.
More disturbing is the report that the vehicles involved with Kobani are alleged by the Kurds to have come from Turkey.
ISIS explicitly told people to attack during Ramadan.

Attorney general to clerks: No need to marry gays just yet
Louisiana’s attorney general says it is not necessary for court officials to immediately begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples even though the U.S. Supreme Court upheld gay marriage nationwide Friday.
[…]
The Louisiana Clerks Association is advising clerks of court to wait for a 25-day period for the high court to consider a rehearing to elapse before issuing licenses.
“Not necessary” is pretty lukewarm. I suspect various parish clerks will do whatever they want to up to the 25 days.

Did Da’esh claim responsibility for the Tunisia massacre? I haven’t heard yet.
Yeah, to me it’s pretty damned obvious that Da’esh is the latest of the Khawarij. They’re pretty much identical, ideologically speaking. And Turkey’s actions are growing increasingly intolerable. What they’re doing - though they won’t admit it - is supporting ISIS against the PYD, which they view as nothing more than the Syrian branch of the PKK, with whom they’ve had a protracted four-decade long conflict.
Someone’s gonna have the tell the Turkish government it’s time to declare their allegiance - either to NATO or to ISIS. Put ‘em on the spot, I say.

Because she was out of town last weekend, for starters.
But the foremost reason I didn’t go back to her Baptist church here in Lubbock, Texas this past Sunday was because my tolerance was plum wore out, to use a local expression, and tolerance is something I try to keep in full reserve every day of my life.
The weekend before, in a sermon titled “Spiritual Exercise!” for the 9:15 a.m. worship service on Dec. 8, her pastor interpreted tolerance, a concept that my peers and I hold in sacred reverence, as a smokescreen for evil.

Since the political issues Obama is speaking of were the reasons for the deaths they are eulogizing, this isn’t politicizing the event. Anyone who makes that claim is a partisan hack idiot, and since we all know that it’s coming it’s just further evidence of how ridiculous the GOP and their sycophants have become.
That being said, IIRC, the Wellstone funeral was turned into a big campaign rally for Democrat politicians at the time, starting with Rick Kahn’s speech veering off subject and it seemed to be in extremely bad taste. Had they been speaking on the need to reform private air travel safety regulations, make changes in the FAA, or something of that nature, it wouldn’t have been.

Meanwhile, back in Iowa, where I believe Jindal is campaigning:
Vander Plaats says gay marriage ruling ‘exceptionally wrong’
Iowa Christian conservative Bob Vander Plaats, a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, says the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion creates a constitutional crisis.
Vander Plaats says the Constitution “was trampled on by activist judges who went way outside of their scope of jurisdiction and defied the laws of nature and nature’s God and it’s going to have severe ripple effects throughout this country.”
He says he’s more optimistic about the institution of marriage today than ever before because he believes the court’s decision will serve as a wakeup call for the church. He says the country knows right from wrong and “what this court did today was exceptionally wrong and they know that marriage simply means the institution of one man and one woman.”
Too bad for Vander Plaats, but surveys show that among young self-identified “evangelicals” gay marriage is not as objectionable as it is with the older ones.

Unfortunately for them, unless they’re planning to renounce their citizenship and find some small island to call their own, the 14th amendment is still in their way.

re: #204 Lidane
WTF is the “Benedict Option”? Is that some kind of brunch option for your eggs?
This is quote from Dreher himself, explaining it.
A few years ago I read a book called After Virtue by a philosopher named Alasdair MacIntyre. It came out in the ’80s. He ends it by saying that we are in a moment now in the West that’s akin to the fall of the Western Roman Empire, when everything went into chaos. He said Saint Benedict of Nursia left the chaos of Rome, went into the woods to pray. Without knowing what he was doing, he founded a community of men dedicated to prayer. This became the Benedictine order of monks, and over the next centuries they kept the faith alive throughout Europe as Europe was covered in barbarian darkness. They laid the groundwork for the rebirth of Christian society in the former Western Roman Empire.
MacIntyre says, “We’re waiting for a new and doubtless very different Saint Benedict to bring those who want to live the moral life together in community to survive through this current darkness.” I’ve been talking about this for years, but it’s starting to get real now because, with the progression of same-sex marriage and gay rights, we have seen a strong erosion of religious liberty. A lot of Christians think of this as simply a matter of law and politics. It’s not. We have lost the culture. We conservatives, we Christians, did not compete at the cultural level, so culture comes first. Politics and law follows that.
My argument is that Christians had better prepare for this. We are fighting a losing game. The country is not ours anymore. This is not our culture anymore. Maybe it never was our real home, but we have got to prepare ourselves and our families and our churches through intentional living, through disciplined living, and through an awareness of the cultural moment to deal with perhaps even persecution.

Hours later, Gov. Greg Abbott sent a memo to the heads of state agencies directing them to “preserve, protect, and defend the religious liberty of every Texan.” That order “applies to any agency decision,” including granting or denying benefits, the memo says.
A spokesman for Abbott clarified the policy in a statement Friday afternoon.
“The governor’s directive does not authorize or order state agencies to deny benefits to same-sex couples,” John Wittman, the spokesman, said. “The directive ensures that individuals doing business with the state cannot be discriminated against because of their religious beliefs.”
Abbott’s office directed questions about who would enforce such a policy to the attorney general. A spokeswoman for the attorney general did not immediately return to a request for comment.

“Illegitimate” meaning “I don’t like it waaah”. I’ve had problems with other Supreme Court decisions but there’s a difference in disagreeing with the court and actually denying the court’s legitimacy because you don’t like the decision. If the same court had overturned SSM, Abbott would be praising them.

I’ll give Dreher one thing—he may have come up with the longest book title in history:
Crunchy Cons: How Birkenstocked Burkeans, Gun-Loving Organic Gardeners, Evangelical Free-Range Farmers, Hip Homeschooling Mamas, Right-Wing Nature Lovers, and Their Diverse Tribe of Countercultural Conservatives Plan to Save America (or At Least the Republican Party)
Amazon had to … in the title section because it was too long—only had the whole title on the book cover pic.

I’ve been busy working in the shop, no radio or news, so this all makes sense now. I stepped outside for a breath of air and saw hordes of zombies destroying churches, while dragons circled overhead, breathing fire on bakers and florists who hadn’t capitulated. It also nicely explains the FEMA trucks driving by with people screaming from the back of them.
Oh wait… I didn’t see any of that. I did see our local male cardinal, who let me know that he was the most worthy of cardinals, and showed off his top-crest to boot.
In other words, life goes on just like the day before. Except for some of my friends, who may now tie the knot here in Tennessee at some (soon) future date.
