4 | lawhawk Jul 8, 2015 6:15:33pm |
You’d think that it’d be a no-brainer that the state flag of South Carolina flies over the state capitol of South Carolina. But that would be logic.
Rather, the legislative nitwits in charge of South Carolina not so long ago decided to fly the confederate flag over the state capitol building.
The flag of insurrectionists (in the state where the first shots of the insurrection were actually fired) whose intention was to protect the institution of slavery.
That’s what these current legislators are debating - and the GOP seeking to protect the right to fly over the state capitol building.
This should be a no-brainer, but apparently in 2015 the GOP thinks that flying the confederate flag is something that should be debated and defended, even though the history of the flag and its associated baggage represent much that is wrong with the nation (racism, slavery, segregation, etc.).

That flag should come down immediately. It was a racist jackass move to put it up during the civil rights era, and moving it from the dome of the Capitol to a nearby government memorial wasn’t remotely close to being an adequate fix.
So it’s at least 50 years overdue to take the damn rag down.

Yeah Slavery’s Constitution was awesome! Runaway America is also very outstanding and gives him a chance to riff on his two favorite topics: Ben Franklin and slavery. Fetes was his first book.
He’s worked in publishing before and was the editor of Journal of the Early Republic until recently. Comes from an English lit/American studies background, hence the engaging writing style. Great historian, great mensch too.
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times — we live in a golden age of well-researched, clearly written books about history and science aimed at the general public. The best seller lists and library shelves are proof of that.
I look forward to reading more of Mr. Waldstreicher’s books, and once again, thanks for the recommendations. ;-)
Now, once more into the breach, my friends, and off to dreamland!

The SC House GOPers are holding out and nakedly playing for time, because they know, the longer this drags out after Roof’s massacre, the more likely it is they can completely bury this bill to remove the CSA battle flag from the Capitol grounds after the initial outrage abates.

I’m not even sure they are sure any more. :)
Maybe it’s a tactic to get the reps so confused that the bill passes or fails, depending on who is masterminding it.

OK this should be it. Right after this asshole finishes.

Fuck you, Sandifer—wah wah wah—the Senate made you do it. Get over it, asshole. We know you never wanted it to pass, but guess what—you’re outnumbered.

93 -7!
Well—93 to TWENTY Seven, but still even better than I thought it would be!
241 | BeachDem Jul 8, 2015 9:59:58pm |
Now it looks like they’re coming back in 2 minutes for the next reading.

Yeah that what I thought, but they keep saying 7.
27 makes more sense
I dont care as long as it passed!

Thank you for the interlude—I needed some entertainment, because I’m sure as fuck not leaving before the third vote.

I’m trying to be productive with my evening after a tasty izakaya dinner.
Mostly because dammit we did this stuff back in December and I really should have finished it all up then…

They’re back in—they’ve prayed and pledged and are taking attendance—why is cspan still blabbing away?

I’m very happy—just sad that Vincent and Bakari aren’t Governor and Lieutenant Governor when it happened.

Plausible deniability?
Exactly… they can tell their constituents “I didn’t vote to take down the flag” without having to deal with the fallout of actually voting to keep it up

Afraid of getting primaried when the time comes, no doubt.

Finally. What a night.
I know how thrilled I am—and I have friends here who have been fighting to get this done for more than 20 years. They have to be ecstatic!

Very glad to wake up this morning to find out they finally did the right thing. I also read the park service isn’t going to allow the Confederate Flag to be displayed at a couple of cemetaries operate by the park service in the South anymore. Progress.
