“Confirmed by numerous world-renowned experts in the field of ancient Chinese and rock art in general. We have found ancient Chinese writings that are readable at multiple sites across the southwest,” Ruskamp said.
But the Chief of Interpretation at the Petroglyph National Monument, Diane Souder, says they’re skeptical.
“We’re not disputing it, but we’re not absorbing it,” Souder said. “We don’t know what these images mean, only the people who carved these images really know for sure. No one will ever know if there is a relationship with the Chinese culture.”

Borowitz Report:
AMES, IOWA (The Borowitz Report)—Presidential candidate Donald Trump revealed a little-known episode of personal heroism from his youth on Saturday, telling an Iowa audience that he narrowly avoided capture in Vietnam by remaining in the United States for the duration of the war.
“The Cong were after me,” Trump said, visibly stirred by the memory. “And then, just in the nick of time, I got my deferment.”
The former reality-show star said he had never shared his record as a war hero before because “I don’t like to boast.”
He said that he only disclosed the episode now because “the way this nation treats our deferment veterans is a disgrace.”
Trump complained that he received no official commendation or medal for his heroism, calling the lack of recognition “shameful.”
“Those brave Americans who, like me, avoided being captured by not serving at all—we are the true heroes,” he said.
Trump’s tale of valor appeared to move many members of his audience, some of whom waited in line after his speech to thank him for his lack of service.

re: #88 The War TARDIS
Given all the options in life, “lashing out” is usually a waste of time.
I knew a lot of non-citizens in the Army. It is very much an American tradition, since it dates from the earliest days of the Republic and the US is one of the relatively few countries that does not require citizenship as a condition for joining the armed forces.
Years ago, I read an article about prior service of Vietnam veterans. Can’t find it online but some of the facts were amazing. A great many veterans had served in foreign armies before coming to the US. Rick Rescorla, who participated in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley and lost his life at the WTC on 9-11, had served in the British army. Rescorla is the soldier featured on the cover of Josepth Galloway’s book about the Ia Drang battle, We Were Soldiers Once and Young
There were hundreds more ex-British soldiers in Vietnam, a fair number of Canadians, and there were even a dozen or so US Vietnam veterans who had been in the Soviet forces at one time.

re: #92 Backwoods_Sleuth
Because she thinks it needs to be banned.
And frankly, I am still having trouble trying to break my ways of thinking (though my Imam will be having me meet a local Republican soon-ish), especially because of stuff in my past where someone who was an evangelical (this happened a lot in Colorado Springs) would tell me one thing, then later tell me another, or even worse, hear about it from someone else.
It doesn’t come across online, but I still struggle with it in person. I have serious paranoia problems. Whether someone is hiding something from me, if someone truly means what they say, or even worse, paranoia about myself. Did I mishear something, or is my judgement about people poor?
I like Christianity in general. I may not believe it anymore, but I can appreciate it and the good that it has done. I think the mainline Protestants are good, and many of the Catholic Orders are as well, and that Francis is a great leader.
However, I still loathe evangelicals. Among that group, I have never seen so many dishonest and conniving people, willing to abandon you with no warning whatsoever. I still struggle with trusting others. And it has been years.

Bernie can’t handle heckler…it’s why don’t the hecklers understand Bernie walked with MLK.

I’m still voting for Bernie in the primaries mind you but man that shit is frustrating. I gave up when he or she refused to admit that Sanders reputation as an uncompromising socialist was relevant to his elect-ability. I like Bernie quite a bit as I said, even will vote for him if he’s there but but sheesh.

re: #125 HappyWarrior
True that. I do have a fairly early primary though.
And my primary really never matters much at all. Nobody campaigns here. Well, I shouldn’t say that - there are very few states that are outright ignored - but most politicians put in a token stop at MSP on their way to someplace more important.

re: #117 The War TARDIS
This is unrelated but something you might want to see. It’s a photo posted on an account belonging to on of Putin’s proxy units in Ukraine, posted only a few days ago:
First there’s the “teenager with a machine gun” aspect, which is seriously problematic if someone is given a firearm they aren’t able to control. But what’s really odd is that the gun is an MG-42 type machine gun. The only ones seen there are M53s, which were built is Serbia when that country was still part of Yugoslavia. And the ones previously seen were in the hands of Serbs fighting for the rebels.

Indeed, though the Serbian-made guns had their firing rate lowered to 1,000 rounds per minute. But then they had to reduce the rate of fire in order to make use of the MG-34 type saddle drum that gun has been fitted with. Otherwise the gun would empty the drum so fast as to make it worthless.

That’s what it is with Biden for me. He’s not only got the experience and knowledge of government but also doesn’t take himself too seriously. I think he’d be the frontrunner if he were a younger man honestly. But part of Biden’s strength to Obama in the first place was his experience so it is what it is. re: #116 HappyWarrior
They do realize that Sanders is six years older than Hillary right?
They live in a dream world. Case in point—a comment from a diary at kos (which is Bernie Central 24/7)
If you’re for Sanders in the Presidential because you’re for his policies, then logic dictates you would be for more Democrats in the House and Senate so he would get a chance to implement some of his policies.
OK—can’t argue with that.
And then of course, the scales would have to come off some eyes as we find out that the vast majority of elected Democrats no more want Bernie’s pro 99% policies than do the Republicans. Bernie would be stalemated by his own party.
Seems pretty pragmatic and realistic. And then…
But that’s okay, because step 1 of the Sanders political revolution involves finding out who are your real friends and enemies. Step 2 would then involve running a whole slate of “Sanders Democrats” to get the DINOs out of office and reclaim the Party and get some great bills and policies passed in his second term.
Yeah—because how easy-peasy would it be to find, run, and WIN with a whole slate of Sanders Dems in four short years? And, after President Bernie has spent his first term accomplishing nothing, as all Republicans and, as the commenter states “the vast majority of elected Democrats” would be against him, he would then breeze to a second term on his awesomeness, and have the extra-long coattails to sweep in a Sanders Dem majority in both houses. Kee-ryst—talk about delusional.
Somebody said it earlier—these people are just like Luap Nor fanbois.

He was exactly that in the 80’s. I actually like John Warner more than Jim Webb now that I think about it. Webb is someone who greatly benefited from his opponent of being a bigoted dumbass and running in a very Democratic year. The problem with Webb is he really has no humility to realize that. Webb has a lot of nasty back history of being against women in the military at all.
Also, look up his stunt of insisting on being sworn in as SecNavy at Annapolis in the middle of finals week and requiring all the cadets to attend and participate.
The Commandant of the Marine Corps interceded on the behalf of the cadets, and Webb bascally told them all to fuck off because he was still bitter over losing his professorship at the acadamy 5 years earlier over nasty mysogynistic comments he made…and by God he was going to make midshipmen suffer.

I love Joe Biden. It was one of the biggest disappointments of my life that he wasn’t the Democratic candidate in 1988.
But then, Reaganomics would have cratered just like it did, and he probably would have taken the blame and lost in ‘92, just like Bush did.
Now, I think he’s too old. I think Bernie Sanders is too old. Hillary Clinton is verging on too old…you really have to hope for 8 years when you support a candidate in an open election like this one.

Ever.
Virginia really hasn’t had any good Congressional Dem candidates to run for senate or governor since with the exception of what is now Gerry Connolly’s seat (former Tom Davis seat, a moderate R) the districts that the Dems have in Congress are in an overwhelmingly Democratic part of the state. I really liked Tom Pereillo who won the district where UVA is but sadly he lost his re-election in 2010. I had a lot of respect for him since unlike Glenn Nye from the Va Beach district, he voted for ACA and stood up for his decision. Both men lost but Pereillo stood on principle.

All that said, I think if Biden entered the race, I think he’d take more of the “anyone but Hillary” supporters than hers. I love the guy, but I think he’s been through enough and doesn’t need the grief of a campaign.

From TDB
Another anecdote—from a book that was published by the academic Texas A&M University Press in March and has received far less attention than it deserves—documents Webb’s insistence on staging his elaborate 1987 installation ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, smack-dab in the middle of exam week.
Webb, an Annapolis alum, had briefly taught at the Academy in 1979 as a writer in residence, but was bounced from the faculty after making politically incorrect comments concerning women serving in the military. (He was against it.)
Untermeyer quotes General P.X. Kelley, then commandant of the Marine Corps, as encountering a “Marine-option midshipman” who “pleaded with him to get ‘the coronation of King James’ switched from Exam Week.”
Untermeyer continues: “When P.X. carried this message to Webb, Jim’s eyes narrowed, and he said, ‘Those bastards kept me off the campus of my own alma mater for three years, and I’m going to make them suffer.’”
Of course, “the ‘bastards’ in question were long gone,” Untermeyer writes, “and the sufferers were the poor middies who had to participate in the ceremony. Barbara Kelley [the commandant’s wife] said succinctly: ‘The jackass.’”
My memory above was wrong, LOL…she called him a jackass, not an asshole.

Gently, there. Some of us here are engineers, y’know.
Another thing I recall is Webb had some campaign lit and images that some thoght painted his opponent, Miller as an anti-semitic caricature. I’d have to give it another look really but I do remember thinking that the attacks by the Webb campaign on Miller in the primary were unfair even though I ended up voting for Webb because Miller to his credit had actually a track record with the Democratic Party. Jim Webb as we got at had been Naval Secretary in a Republican administration and had supported Bush in 2000 and I think even 2004 too. Not sure.
I also heh thought Webb had an unhealthy obsession with the Scots-Irish but who am I the guy with a 69th New York inspired tattoo and numerous books about Ireland to call anyone out on that.

I’ve not found that to be the case. I think the idea is from Jean-Paul Sartre, who didn’t like his engineer father.
re: #206 thedopefishlives
I know not all engineers are like this.
But there are some odd correlations. And not just with Terrorism.
Engineers are measurably more politically conservative than scientists, at least in the United States. A 1972 study[6] showed professors of engineering describing themselves as “deeply religious” and “strongly conservative” more than those in any other field. Applying the same analysis to data gathered in 1984 found 46% of male American engineers describing themselves as both conservative and religious, compared with 22% of scientists.
Many prominent figures in the creationism movement are or have been engineers, for example Henry Morris of the Institute for Creation Research.[7] One hypothesis is that creationists single out their engineers in an attempt to pull off argumentum ad verecundiam, and they haven’t many in their ranks more reputable than an engineer.
re: #193 Decatur Deb
Are “The Mulai” and “Mulai” two different accounts?
There is just one: “The Mulai”
re: #211 The War TARDIS
Part of it is because a large part of our engineers, at least in the US, come from the heart of the Bible belt; part of it is probably due to engineers being comprised largely of shy, people-pleasing “nerd” stereotypes; another part is probably due to the tendency of really smart people to assume that because they are experts in one field, they can apply that expertise to completely unrelated fields.

I don’t know why he’s running at all—probably bored. This piece about him leaving the Senate pretty well shows how ill-suited he is to politics and how truly awful he would be as president:
The end of Jim Webb’s senatorial career, with his announcement that he would not seek re-election in 2012, was far less surprising than the fact that Webb even had a senatorial career to end. He’d arrived in the Senate seeming ready to leave, having declared, in a 2006 debate with his Republican foe, George Allen, “When I go to my grave, whether I was a United States Senator or not is not gonna be high on my agenda.”
And that was when he was trying to convince Virginia voters to put him into the Senate.

He really did benefit from Allen being a bigoted shithead in a great year for Democrats. Now I am glad Allen is gone for sure but I wish that someone else would have ran. It’s all good though. Kaine is good and I think should be re-elected in a few years.

Patience.
re: #213 thedopefishlives
Part of it is because a large part of our engineers, at least in the US, come from the heart of the Bible belt; part of it is probably due to engineers being comprised largely of shy, people-pleasing “nerd” stereotypes; another part is probably due to the tendency of really smart people to assume that because they are experts in one field, they can apply that expertise to completely unrelated fields.
The classic example of that bolded part being Ben Carson.

Over at Bernie Central (kos), there’s a diary with about 800 comments about how the debate schedule is a DNC/Hillary conspiracy to keep the world from knowing about the wonder that is Bernie.
I swear, I like Bernie, but his fans are obnoxious.

I’ve noticed that with business people too. But yes Carson is a great example of that.
When is Donald Trump going to stop embarrassing his friends, let alone the whole country?

Usually Donald Trump attacks anyone who calls him out but he hasn't said a word about Rupert Murdoch. Clearly incapable of punching upwards.

It happens a lot, not just with engineers. But engineers are, by and large, smart people, and they’re as susceptible to hubris and egomania as any other smart people.

Yeah—beating Allen and his GI Bill work were pretty much his Senate highlights. From that Daily Beast article:
Webb personally warned President Obama that the all-out push for health-care reform would be ” a disaster” for the party…
He derided affirmative action as “state-sponsored racism”; in response to the campaign to allow women in combat roles, Webb wrote an essay called “Women Can’t Fight,” declaring he’d never met a woman he’d trust in a leadership position in combat.
And on and on. (You know I’m a Tim Kaine fan as well.)

I had heard that Bernie tried to talk, but couldn’t be heard and that’s why he left. Still doesn’t explain him cancelling other engagements.

Webb looks like he’s had some work done on his face. I don’t think I could vote for anybody who beat the shit out of someone.

Having lived with and among engineers… one thing I noticed that was quite common was seeing the world in black and white. Their world is numbers, proofs, solid stuff that is predictable. Gray areas, mushy feelings, stuff they can’t fix is uncomfortable. Bravado is a cover.

I think the reason they’re more conservative than scientists because as a scientist your job is to try as hard as you can to prove what you think is true, is not. It’s all about asking questions.
Being an engineer, it’s more about knowing the answers.
Kid A thinks we should all speak in the third-person the rest of the night.

Here’s The Rude Pundit on the matter:
I’m on the fence about what happened at NN. The candidates could have handled it better and the protesters could have said their peace, but given them a chance to speak.
Just my opinion.

I’m not a fan of hecklers, but it’s ironic that at least some of the same folks who chastised Obama about how he handled hecklers, i.e. “he should listen to them” or “how dare he be so mean”…are now saying the hecklers were being disruptive and disrespectful to Bernie Sanders.
Newsflash…someone who heckles want to disrupt.

re: #201 The War TARDIS
It looks our shooter in Chattanooga was an engineer.
Somehow, this doesn’t surprise me.
I am still stumped as to why so many engineers are reactionary. Thoughts on why?
Many engineers like precision and structure. They’re uncomfortable with uncertainty and non-controllable situations, which causes them a lot of problems in social situations.
Reactionary political philosophy is all about structure and control. So engineers are going to be drawn to it.
ETA: This isn’t a phenomena unique to engineers. When I was a computer programmer many of my colleagues were quite reactionary in nature. I’ve even met artists and writers who suffered from the OCD light that demands structure and control.

re: #259 Charles Johnson
Tame Impala is this week’s buzz band at MN Public Radio’s rock station (The Current). I’ve been switching the station all week whenever they play them.
The Current’s band of the week is usually some piece of crap that has a lot of industry chatter. The station started out not that long ago as a genuine free form joy but the powers-that-be almost immediately started imposing a playlist and sucky ‘features’ that are nothing but marketing. Now the station is as bad as any commercial station but they’re still pathetically big headed about being ‘listener supported radio’.

Engineering is a field where there is A RIGHT ANSWER, and everything else is WRONG. Even chemistry and medicine are fuzzier than that; humanities are *extremely* fuzzy. Non-engineers have to learn to consider multiple possibilities, many of which are acceptable.
