White House Close to Sealing the Iran Nuclear Deal, as Sen. Bob Casey Pledges Support

The fat lady’s warming up in the wings
Politics • Views: 56,029

President Obama needs 34 votes in the Senate to prevent Republicans from killing the Iran nuclear deal, and it’s beginning to look like he’s going to get them as Sen. Bob Casey throws in his support.

Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania will back the Iran nuclear deal, becoming the 32nd Senate Democrat to pledge support for the agreement, which puts the White House within striking distance of the votes it needs to ensure the deal survives in Congress.

Casey announced his decision Tuesday afternoon after weeks of mulling the much-disputed deal with the longtime U.S. nemesis. His statement is 17 pages long, including more than a page of citations, and it goes through a range of concerns and objections raised by skeptics of the deal before essentially rebutting each one.

“I firmly believe that effective implementation of the [agreement], bolstered by other U.S. policies, including a strong deterrence policy of the U.S. and our partners, will be in our national security interest,” Casey writes. “This agreement will substantially constrain the Iranian nuclear program for its duration, and compared with all realistic alternatives, it is the best option available to us at this time.”

I see it like this: the world will be a better and safer place with both Israel and Iran as full members of the community of nations. The unfreezing of assets is a calculated risk, the regime will use some of that money for bad things. However, the hope is that allowing Iran a vibrant economic life will serve to empower civil society and begin to marginalize the lunatic fringe, who are firmly against this deal…likely for this very reason. In our post Iraq War world, I really don’t think there’s a better option to influence the situation in Iran.

On one hand, I disagree with Obama when he says anyone against this deal is obviously in favor of a military option. On the other hand, sanctions haven’t stopped Iran from supporting the bad actors in the region and conducting a wider proxy war against Sunni Arab monarchies, nor developing a nuclear weapon! Netanyahu has been assuring the world Iran is “extremely close” for at least 19 years. If sanctions haven’t prevented any of this up to now, it seems silly to expect better results on the same path down the road.

Besides, the international community which has largely (although not entirely) supported sanctions in the past has signaled they are ready to move on from them and do business there for reasons fair and foul. Because of this, future sanctions regimes are going to be weaker, not stronger.

This is not a great deal, but I am fully convinced it is far and away the least bad option available. When I look at the people for & against this deal, I am a LOT more comfortable standing among the former.

This could actually end up helping Democrats if the one or two Senators who feel they need to bolster their WAR credentials in some way get effectively a free vote (against Obama) on the issue.

When even the Economist comes out with a three-page, well-reasoned endorsement of the Iran deal, anyone with half a brain starts to pay attention. Apparently, someone put the vise on Shelly Adelson and the brain-damaged loons of the Likud party to Tone This Shit Down Or Else.

Otherwise, there’d be a whole lotta posturing - the spectacle of congressmen sitting up on their haunches like anxious Weimaraners, begging for just a dollop of that sweet, sweet Adelson-bribe laundered thru Chinese casinos perfectly legal campaign contributions would be all we’d be seeing.

It would be really great if Dems can muster enough support for a filibuster.

Not the preferred choice, but I think better in the long run than a veto proof margin.

It would be ideal if all the R’s (or any of them) would actually consider the merits of the deal instead of reflexively voting against, but hey…not gonna happen.

I think Susan Collins might do it. Probably waiting to see if that would be the tipping point either for the 2/3 or the 60 votes.

This is all kind of strange in my book. Well, “strange” in the sense of being more about theatre than anything else.

The Iran deal is a multi-party agreement and the partners of the US, which were the currently nuclear-weapon wielding countries and other major players on the world stage, have said this is the agreement they are going with.

Just because some US congressman think they can pass some resolution or block another one will not stop these other nations from going ahead with their own plans.

These US Senators and Congressmen are just playing domestic politics.

What I can’t understand about the opposition to the Iran nuclear deal - do these people actually believe having no deal is better? Doesn’t it seem obvious that without a deal Iran is much more free to continue developing nuclear weapons at a much faster pace?

The opponents are not behaving rationally; if they succeed in killing the deal it’s much more likely that Iran will have nukes much sooner. The only way their stance makes sense is if they expect us to go to war, and maybe that’s exactly what they’re pushing for.

Try a wake-up call by a smoke alarm at 5am.

The failure mode for low battery should IN NO WAY entail setting off the entire alarm system, but.

The only way their stance makes sense is if they expect us to go to war, and maybe that’s exactly what they’re pushing for.

they dont want to say that the only solution that theyll approve of is bombing

they know it’s pointless but they are playing to a constituency that believes that hitting, shooting, bombing, and killing are always the most effective solution to all of life’s problems

Yeah, as if it will work. They know full well it won’t.

It won’t, because the sanctions regime was held together with bailing wire and twine. We had to effectively threaten our European allies with political and economic consequences if they didn’t join us in sanctions. If this deal falls through, the sanctions will come down, either all at once or in pieces, until we’re the only ones left standing. And, contrary to the fairy tales the wingnuts tell themselves at night, we do not have the economic and political power to bring Iran to its knees all on our own.

Heh. I remember the first time a smoke detector battery went bad on me, years ago. I was awakened in the middle of the night by a high-pitched deafening shrieking sound that was so loud I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from at first. Then I had to stand on a chair and remove several screws to get at the battery, while this shrieking sound went on and on right next to my head. The full blown alarm going off this morning, loud sirens followed by “FIRE FIRE,” at 5:15am (because they are never at convenient hours) before it stopped 30 seconds (? hard to gauge time when you are trying to figure out if there is smoke anywhere and if this is waking up the neighbors and has it called the fire department) later.

And then (THEN) started the low battery chirping 10 minutes after that.

It took a good 3+ minutes plus a call to the monitoring service to establish which set of smoke detectors was going off, and another 20 minutes for the adrenaline to work its way far enough out of my system that my hands stopped shaking.

I’m asking if only religious beliefs can be counted as “sincerely held”—i.e. if atheists, by definition, lack belief in God(s), does that mean whatever other beliefs they may hold aren’t as sincere as those of believers (in God)?

So continuing the thought thread: The whole thing seems like a failure of logic to me as it basically leaves atheists (legally) unprotected (since their lack of belief is by definition not a religion/belief system). I wonder what would happen if an atheist baker refused to bake any cakes that represented any religion or was decorated with religious symbols… It’s the word/concept of “belief” that’s causing trouble, I think.

Anyway, I’m gonna shut up and and get back to work. BBL

I see it as a combination of two things.

First, the Right simultaneously believes that Obama is totally rigid and unwilling to compromise, AND he’s a total wimp who can be rolled by anyone. So, he’s rigidly unwilling to listen to and address the concerns of Netanyahu or the American Right, while being totally conned by the Iranians into accepting a bad deal.

Second, the opponents of the deal are, mostly, the kind of people for whom compromise is the same as capitulation, so every negotiation must have an absolute loser, and an absolute winner. If we aren’t the latter, we must be the former. Iran is BAD, so any deal short of total capitulation on all points, including everything we ever wanted them to do, is BAD DEAL.

They also believe that we have more power in this situation than we actually have, and all we need to do is tell other countries how it’s going to be (a la Trump), and they’ll fall into line. They long for what they imagine the days of the Cold War were like, when Europe was so afraid of the USSR that we could dictate everyone else’s foreign policy. The fact that there never really was such a time is lost on them.

Yeah, Fox News is all over protecting the authority of police to shoot unarmed black folks. You see, by pointing out a wrong, you expose the perpetrators of that wrong to potential violent reprisal, so if you are on the receiving end of a wrong, just shut up about it.

Note also that the same geniuses are flogging the PP hoax videos day in and day out, and whinging on about ‘killing babies’ and ‘selling baby parts’, with (being charitable) no care for whether THAT might incite violence.

Note further that they took no responsibility for the couple who killed two cops after after leaving Bundy’s ranch, while Fox celebrated the explicit threat of death against LEOs.

So, apparently all black people who complain about police brutality are responsible for any violence against cops, but for prolifers, Fox News, etc, it’s all ‘Lone Wolves’ and ‘Hoocoodanode’.

I think that this is modern conservatism in a nutshell. Everything is a zero-sum game. If you come to an agreement with Iran, you’re betraying Israel. If you are giving money to the poor, you’re taking it away from me. If you’re recognizing the rights of others to get married against my wishes, you’re taking away from my rights.

Everything has to fit within a simplistic binary worldview of win/lose, good/bad, love/hate. There is absolutely no room for nuance in their world view which is what leads them to such ridiculous positions like the freak-out over Mount McKinley, err… Mt. Denali. Even though the issue itself is pretty much trivial, it has to fit into that binary worldview and therefore, because Obama did it, it must be a national disgrace.

I’ll never forget the night in the mid-eighties at UC Berkeley’s Greek Theatre. A fantastic show of mostly his mystical Irish material with his band and a string quartet, during which a fan kept shout “Play Gloria! GLORIA!!” between every song. Van ended the gig with a lovely rendition of Stephen Sondheim’s “Send In The Clowns.” When he got to the penultimate verse, he pointed at the “Gloria guy” and crooned, “But where are the clowns/Send in the clowns/Don’t bother, they’re already feckin’ here.” That got a huge response from the crowd who from the moment he entered stage right were eating out of the palm of his hand. I’ve seen him several times over the years and he’s always been great.

I would’ve loved to have seen him at the Armadillo! Color me greener than Kermit.

From a pure numbers standpoint, Iran’s population is close to an order of magnitude greater than Israel. Any direct attack by Israel against Iran will be a numerical failure and would automatically cause a set-aside of the inter-nicene battles between Shia and Sunni and lead to an all-out targeting of Israel that the US dare not intervene in without facing incredible worldwide sanctions.
