We need a term that encompasses obstinate and aggressive ignorance. Because I don’t think a good chunk of the respondents are answering honestly, they know the correct answer but they reject it. It’s what I previously called the lie as a shibboleth. These GOP primary votes know their answers are full of shit, but they feel they can identify themselves from the other by repeating it with a straight face. And the sad thing is they repeat it so often that they start to believe it reflexively via some surface, mimetic portion of their brain though deeper down they know what they’re saying is complete horse shit.
It’s a kind of consensual mass brainwashing, a sociological pathology of weak minds who for whatever reason find themselves unwilling or unable to publicly reject this totally fantastical Party zeitgeist.
“It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever,” until it turns the clock back as much as it can.

Too important to strategy in the Pacific Ocean for us not to have it. It was pure and simple imperialism and yet it’s one of those bad moments in our history that I have a hard time feeling bad about. If we had not moved the navy to Pearl Harbor from San Diego in May 1940, I think things regarding WWII in the Pacific could have been significantly different than things were in history.
For all of America’s mistakes pre & post war, it would have been worse for all of them in the Pacific basin had we lost.

Fairly typical of the era. In 1939, the Chinese had been locked in a very viscous war with the Japanese since (officially) 1937 but years before that as well. All were liable for conscription and the C96 pistol with shoulder stock was a very popular carbine. If it is unfamiliar, well, that’s because western propaganda, er, “movies” tended to ignore them and their very desperate fights (by BOTH the Nationalists and Communists) against the fascists of Japan unless we could wrap our good white folks around the fight.
The The 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941-1942, (aka The Flying Tigers) for the most famous example of us not caring unless white lives were at stake. Note: Claire Chennault was not guilty of this.
The John Birch scum would later parlay that same disinterest into their later assault on power.

That sounds fishy (phishy?) but it might just be a redirecting advertisement. I myself have had clicking on things redirect to an odd advertisement page (Google Chrome on Win 10). The page still loads in a new window, but the original tab is redirected to a blank ad page.
It’s been my experience that a lot of redirecting ads, an absolute ton of them, are targeting Android and iOS because the average webdesigner doesn’t test on mobile so they can get away with doing it for significantly longer.
If a bad person apparently exposes a wrongdoing by a person you think is good, the worst thing to do is circle the wagons.

If she goes to jail, a temporary appointment can be made (most likely one of the deputy clerks—one of which is her son).
I don’t know how many people work in her office. My county, which has a much smaller population, has four or five deputy clerks.

Thing is, the county clerk’s office is legally obligated to issue marriage licenses. At some point, they’re going to have to start doing their jobs. Couples in Rowan County shouldn’t have to drive to another county to exercise their constitutional rights.
Something is going to have to give.

The Attorney General may soon appoint a special prosecutor to investigate her for official misconduct. Now that there is no stay in effect protecting her from the US District Court’s order, her jailing and/or fine is just a matter of getting a contempt of court hearing scheduled, I guess within a couple of weeks, in front of Judge Bunning.

It seems that the anti-gay right wing extremists take on the 1A is completely divorced from reality. They think that it gives them the right to impose their religious views on everyone else as Davis is doing here.
That’s precisely the way that the 1A is not supposed to work. It’s supposed to prevent a person from using government to impose their religious views on everyone else.
You are entitled to your own religious views, but you cannot impose them on anyone else as part of a government policy - the law is supposed to be neutral on its face.
The religious objections to Davis doing her damned job in marrying couples who are of the same sex reeks of the same kind of logic that right wingers were pushing decades ago when couples sought to marry someone of a different color (intermarriage - miscegenation). There’s a whole lot of breathless reporting on this. The trend to take that discretion from priests is a relatively recent side effect of the anti-abortion mania in the church. Killing, prenatal or otherwise, was not a matter for excommunication. Using the Holy Year “for now” is probably a way to tiptoe out of the corner the hierarchy has painted itself into.
(The church has always (i.e. from earliest doctrinal standardization) held that priests can bind or loosen via the sacrament formerly known as Penance.)

I understand your’s and other’s position on Catholics and birth control and abortion. I agree. It is one of the many reasons I am not a practicing Catholic even after years of being steeped in it.
All I am saying is it is a big thing for the Pope to even come out and make the statement. To me that indicates he may well be putting a little crack in some long held thinking. If he is not, there was no reason to make the statement.

When last I paid attention to that, they accepted the idea, but were not sure it extended to all the lines of succession. That was one of the stumbling blocks at earlier attempts at reunification. A similar situation held with the Anglicans for a number of generations after Henry VIII.

I got out because I don’t want to be a member of a club that I don’t agree with. To me it was and is hypocritical to be a part of something I do not believe or even agree with. I only went through it until I was 18 for my parents and considered it my right to walk away as an adult decision.

If you think that the American “Empire” is going to collapse because of gay marriage, or because we’re not on the gold standard, or some other BS, then we’re not much of an empire in the first place.
And I don’t think that we’re an empire so much as a hegemony. We’ve got a huge sphere of influence, either direct or indirect, and it goes beyond mere military force, though that plays into things as well.
But the GOP appears hellbent on undermining the hegemony by diverting resources to building walls on both borders, which would cost billions and then billions more to staff them. They want to cut taxes even further, destroy the safety net, and spend on military gear, while not paying those in our service a proper wage (and certainly not providing sufficient care to those who have separated from service either with decent wages, health care, etc.).

Well, the key word here is “we” as used in your second sentence in the last paragraph.
I am not part of we. I am not a practicing member, therefore I have already determined there would be no change and walked away due to that and more.
It is a private club and if you are a member, you give up rights they do not grant. That to me is the church’s biggest issue and one that confused me. They have members that do not buy what they are selling. It is full up with all kinds of hypocrisy. How can that be good for anyone?
If anything I think the new Pope has a feel that is his biggest issue too.

The insurance across state lines sounds great, until you realize that it would be a race to the bottom. State with least amount of coverage protections would be idolized, while actual care and coverage would suffer - leaving people to carry ever greater health care costs.

That point makes it clear that Walker knows exactly zed point fuck about health insurance. The insurers establish provider networks, that’s part of what you’re paying for. The size and geographical extent of those networks is governed by the size of the insurer. Selling health insurance to consumers in areas where the insurer has no network would necessitate the insurer developing a new reimbursement model. Billing and reimbursement is already a nightmare, few reputable companies will go for out-of-area sales.

Heck, even now with doctors and hospitals in network, you can find that you’re getting billed for out of network services that you had no choice over. For instance, you’re going to the ER for an injury and need surgery. You chose the hospital b/c it is in network, and your personal surgeon at the hospital is also in-network.
However, the ER dept is out of network b/c they’ve outsourced that work, and the anesthesiologist is also out of network. They hit you for higher costs as a result - even though you tried to do everything in-network.

There are more than 3 million registered voters in Kentucky.
On that particular ballot election in 2004, voter turnout was very low. The vote total in favor of the amendment was 1,222,125, which was 74.6% of the vote, NOT of all Kentuckians. (“no” votes were 417,097, one of those were mine.)
That Kentucky Constitution amendment was overturned in US District Court, decision upheld by the 6th District Court, and the amendment is no longer valid since the SCOTUS decision in June.

I am Episcopalian, but most of my friends growing up were Catholic. My aunt was a nun. I attended Catholic churches every Sunday and took Communion anyway, because protest. I was never struck by lightning.
I’m Irish, which should explain the entire paragraph above.
My best friend went to Notre Dame Paris on a trip and felt in such a place, confession was in order. She walked over to the booth and began to speak to the priest.
“Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. I am living with a man and we are not married.”
The priest responded, “Do you plan to marry him?”
Startled, she responded, “Well, I’m not sure, I mean we’ve talked about it, but you know, it’s just not something I want to do right now. I have doubts. He can be a real asshole.”
“You must consider this. As for the living together, it’s alright.”
She told me she walked out of the booth and just laughed.
She broke up with him a couple of months later and always tells people it was a French priest that caused the breakup.

Trace O’Connell, the Philip man accused of spilling beer on Native American children at a local hockey game in January, has been acquitted of the disorderly conduct charge against him.
The verdict, issued in the racially charged trial, was filed Tuesday morning by Magistrate Judge Eric Strawn.
In July, Strawn estimated it would take three to four weeks to make his decision, as he wanted to “leave no stone unturned.”
O’Connell, 41, was charged with violating Rapid City’s municipal disorderly conduct ordinance. The incident occurred Jan. 24 during a Rapid City Rush hockey game in the ice arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. During the January game, O’Connell, who is white, was among about 20 people in an arena suite. Seated directly below the suite was a group of about 50 students and seven adult chaperons from American Horse School, which is in Allen on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
The criminal complaint against O’Connell alleged that he “caused beer to be spilled upon another person or persons, and uttered racially charged and confrontational words within the hearing of minor(s) and adult(s).”

And Hurricane Fred in the Atlantic became the first hurricane to form east of the Cape Verdes and actually hit the Cape Verdes as a hurricane. We’re starting to see stuff in meteorology never seen before as long as records exist.
Not good at all - especially considering that just a few weeks ago, sand from Africa was thwarting development of hurricanes in that part of the ocean. Now, conditions are ripe to develop storms. And we’re in the height of the hurricane season.

Had a lost Great Dane puppy wander into my neighborhood. He looked so thin, so we fed him. Called the city and they took him home. Ran into the city official again, turns out his sibling is also missing. Lady who owns them says she’s been feeding them what the vet recommends and that she fed them this morning. O’Keefe’s Project Veritas Action accused the Clinton campaign on September 1 of allowing a Canadian tourist to launder money, in the form of allowing a t-shirt to be purchased.
In the video representatives of the Clinton campaign at a campaign event point out to a woman from Montreal that that the campaign can’t take contributions from anyone who isn’t American. An undercover activist from Project Veritas then makes the purchase on behalf of the Canadian.
As The Washington Post’s Dave Weigel points out: “There are just two catches. One: No one’s ever thrown the book at an American for purchasing merchandise from a campaign, then giving it to a foreigner as a gift. Two: The person who takes the Canadian’s money and gives it to the Clinton campaign is the Project Veritas Action journalist.”
Weigel further notes, “Daniel Pollack, the director of communications at Project Veritas, argued that the on-camera swag exchange was part of a Clinton scandal continuum, comparable to the stories about foreign businessmen donating to Bill Clinton’s foundation and expecting something from Hillary Clinton’s state department.”
O’Keefe held a press conference September 1 to promote the video, where journalists reportedly asked him “Is this a joke?”

I’m late to this party, but this kind of analysis can’t be applied to the 3/5 compromise.
It falls apart instantaneously once it is noted that the north wanted slaves to count for nothing in terms of representation and the south wanted 100%. 60% was the eventual compromise.
The fact that the south wanted the number to be higher hardly means that the south thought the black slaves were more human. They just wanted as much power in the House of Representatives and in the electoral college as possible.
