Acoustic Guitar Wizardry: Tommy Emmanuel, “Traveling Clothes”

A jaunty little tune, played with great aplomb
Music • Views: 55,672

YouTube

Tommy Emmanuel makes this look so easy, but man — that technique is ridiculously great. He’s probably one of the best acoustic guitar finger-pickers in the world.

Traveling Clothes is a song from Tommy’s latest album It’s Never Too Late.

I see that Michelle Malkin is attacking both Joe Biden and Colbert.

Malkin really is addicted to her hate-industry persona.

Speaking of the Paleo-right, none other than Paleo-Pat has weighed in on the BLM and cop killing. The Townhall link:

Do Cops’ Lives Matter to Obama?

Barack Obama, as chief law enforcement officer of the United States, is going to have to stop acting like a conscientious objector in this war on cops.

[…]

This year, 24 cops have been gunned down. And the day after deputy Goforth’s execution, “Black Lives Matter!” showed up at the Minnesota state fair chanting, “Pigs in a blanket! Fry ‘em like bacon!”

Last fall, when mobs blocked highways after the death of Eric Garner in an encounter with police on Staten Island, the hoodlum chant was: “What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want ‘em? Now!”

Soon after, two cops in Brooklyn were executed in their patrol car.

Time for Obama to ascend the bully pulpit and call out the racial demagogues in the fever swamps of his own radical left constituency.

[…]

Nixon and George Wallace got 57 percent of the vote in 1968. And a strong stand for law and order helped to give the GOP a near quarter-century lock on the presidency.

[…]

The whistle was heard.

Fuck this rent-a-cop and fuck the Whole Foods employees who condoned this:

Black Man Brutalized by Security Guard at Whole Foods for Trying to Buy Food

An eye witness to the attack, Zoe Marks, on visit from Edinburgh, Scotland where she lectures at the University of Edinburgh, gave an eyewitness account of the assault on her Facebook, posting graphic images of the victim. She told the Oakland Tribune that she saw the argument between the cashier and the victim as he was trying to use an EBT card (a food stamp card that works like a debit card), but said that the victim wasn’t “shouting,” nor was her “violent or disruptive.” In fact, Marks said the man wasn’t a threat to anyone and that she felt “safe” until the armed security guard came and “attacked him.”

In a Facebook status Marks described the “violent assault,” saying the guard “slammed” the victim against “concrete pillars.” He also allegedly put the man in a chokehold and “suffocated” him before throwing him on the ground unconscious. Then the guard reportedly locked the man out of the store despite the fact that he was unconscious.

She said none of the employees called the paramedics, instead they called for backup.

Warning: graphic images.

Off-topic, but this came to my attention:

no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark
you only run for the border
when you see the whole city running as well

your neighbors running faster than you
breath bloody in their throats
[…]
no one leaves home unless home chases you
fire under feet
hot blood in your belly
it’s not something you ever thought of doing
until the blade burnt threats into
your neck
and even then you carried the anthem under
your breath
only tearing up your passport in an airport toilets
sobbing as each mouthful of paper
made it clear that you wouldn’t be going back.
[…]
you have to understand,
that no one puts their children in a boat
unless the water is safer than the land
no one burns their palms
under trains
beneath carriages
no one spends days and nights in the stomach of a truck
feeding on newspaper unless the miles travelled
means something more than journey.
no one crawls under fences
no one wants to be beaten
pitied
[…]

Now that I’m back in China and timezone challenged, I missed the chance to comment on this link slate.com
because I was asleep at the time.

I have a few comments about it.
* Yes, it is a possibility that some dumbfuck driver, if they hit you, will try to finish you off to avoid heavy financial loss.
* That said, it is not a common occurrence. Some Chinese drivers have some morals.
* Nevertheless, NEVER assume you as the pedestrian have the right of way. That’s an American and European law, not a Chinese one. Cross the street as if you were the little guy in Frogger, without the cute music.

Drivers in Macau and Hong Kong, on the other hand, do yield to pedestrians. They also have the endearing habit of obeying traffic signals, something drivers in my neck of the woods take as mere suggestions.

Washington state Supreme Court rules that charter schools are unconstitutional

Chief Justice Barbara Madsen wrote that charter schools aren’t “common schools” because they’re governed by appointed rather than elected boards.

Therefore “money that is dedicated to common schools is unconstitutionally diverted to charter schools,” Madsen wrote.

The ruling is a victory for the coalition that filed the suit in July 2013, asking a judge to declare the law unconstitutional for “improperly diverting public-school funds to private organizations that are not subject to local voter control.”

There was a place where Progressive rock and a certain very edgy jazz would meet at the time. I was terribly young at the time but seems to me this music holds up. Not popular genre these days though.

Washington state Supreme Court rules that charter schools are unconstitutional

It’s going to be interesting to see how this decision affects charter schools in other states. Too many of them operate as separate fiefdoms within a public school district, with very little public oversight. Some charter schools are quite good, but studies have shown time and again that most charters do no better than normal public schools on a variety of measures, and a few are merely run as money-making organs for their “owners.”

Diane Ravitch has written a lot on charter schools.

[Embedded content]

Not only not popular, but seems to result in a visceral negative reaction from purists. The Chicago Tribune jazz critic, Howard Reich, makes an obnoxiously dismissive remark about Weather Report (some of the greatest music ever, IMO) any time he mentions Wayne Shorter. A year or two ago he wrote a SCATHING review of a Pat Metheny gig…as if he didn’t know what he was going to be getting there!

It likely won’t have an effect, unless that state has similar provisions in its state Constitution to that of Washington. Because it appeared that the court ruled the state constitution had been violated, since the federal constitution is silent on the funding question before the court.

We’ll see. Charter schools are one of the many education fads that come and go, though they have lasted longer than most previous “reforms” of education. Charter schools are a bit like the Uber of education. The so-called solution to a problem creates many more as time goes on.

All depends on how it’s used. The Russian executioners at Katyn used Walther PPK’s in .25 to kill all the Polish officers so that it would look more like the Germans did it. Vasili Blokhin, the prolific NKVD executioner, preferred it as the recoil was less and his wrist didn’t hurt as much after a night of executions. He would kill ~7000 in 28 days at Katyn.

It turns out that the alcohol safety of Addyi - the so-called female Viagra - was tested mostly on men.

According to the drug’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy, the effects of mixing alcohol and Addyi were tested on 25 people, but 23 of them were men.

The drug testers were given Addyi and the equivalent of two to four glasses of wine in 10 minutes, according to the results. The outcome was dangerously low blood pressure, sometimes requiring “therapeutic intervention.”

Probably in most loadings. I’d still probably bet on the 60 grain Aquila .22lr SSS cartridge. More mass means more dwell time to receive impulse. Especially since the .25 is only ever chambered in ultra short barrels, but being a centerfire ignition would be more reliable.

Of all of the pre-war small pistols, the Mauser HSc was the best, if you get it in .32 as it was designed for. The post war ones in .380 were not very reliable as the cartridge was too strong for the design.

The right-wing’s hysterical reaction to this Kim Davis con-job demonstrates better than anything ever has that they are LIARS when they claim to support the Constitution or the rule of law. The Supreme Court cannot “make law” so we can just ignore its rulings? “God’s law” takes precedence? An elected official can scrap the law and ignore court orders in order to discriminate against citizens as long as he or she can win an election? Sort of a slow news day, but there is this:

Thousands reach Austria after Hungary migrant chaos

In my opinion, the world, by which I mean those nations which are functioning at a capability to provide their people with the basics of life, will have to come to terms with all the failed states.

What has happened in Syria probably has many root causes and activists will tag their pet cause onto the crisis to support whatever their own goals are, but regardless of ultimate causes, the immediate problem in Syria is large enough to cause political crises thousands of miles away.

But trying to deal with problems like in Syria will open up cans of worms in addition to the immediate problem. Fear of change in the balance of power along any cluster of national borders will bring further heat between vested parties, such as those nations who sell arms to belligerents.

And so it goes.

It’s easy in the US to withdraw our attention from “over there”, which is what feeds a great deal of the political heat in the GOP race when the candidates try to out do each other on being the mega-machismo American super-general, wanting to bomb here and there.

But if we ever did bomb here-and-there that would in reality just cause more problems. Would Syria be what it is today if we had not done a half-assed job at nation building in Iraq?

Syria will not function as an economy with half its people displaced and in crisis. Thus the wanna-be militant theocrats who are churning the situation there will not be able to have a stable nation. They will continually be striving against pop-up groups that attempt to address this or that locality in crisis due to hunger, water, etc.

Anarchy doesn’t work. Anarchy fueled by religious delusions is even worse.

So in this case the EU will allow in a tiny fraction of the displaced Syrians. That will not solve the big picture problem, though for those few thousand who make it to the promised land their new life will be better than living in refugee camps.

And this is what the seething anti-Iran deal theocrats in this country seem to not understand. The point of the deal is not that Iran is a peaceful and positive influence on the world. Rather, the deal is about finding a way for all the parties involved to work together, with the goal of moving the powers-that-be in Iran little-by-little into a more responsible form of governance in their region.

The Bomb-Bomb-Bomb-Iran crowd, if allowed to fulfill their desires, will bring about more Syria-like situations, where anarchy reigns and pop-up religious/political factions will fight ad-nauseum.

The Russian executioners at Katyn used Walther PPK’s in .25 to kill all the Polish officers so that it would look more like the Germans did it.

Not true. They were killing in the spring of 1940 so they certainly did not know that the Germans would invade, much less that the graves would be found and then used for propaganda by the Germans. Much like in Kharkov and Kalinin, they thought that the graves would never be found. Which is why they also left all the documents pointing to the spring of 1940 on the bodies. They used the guns either because that’s what they had (many NKVD men had foreign guns awarded to them and used them as personal weapons), or because that was what they preferred.

Plus the caliber used in Katyn was mostly 7.65, and we don’t know that specifically Walthers were used in Katyn.

Vasili Blokhin, the prolific NKVD executioner, preferred it as the recoil was less and his wrist didn’t hurt as much after a night of executions. He would kill ~7000 in 28 days at Katyn.

Blokhin was shooting in Kalinin, not in Katyn. He wasn’t shooting alone. And the number of the Polish citizens shot in Kalinin was around 6300 (in Katyn around 4200).

I might not have commented otherwise, but I happen to have studied the Katyn issue in depth. Like, very, very in depth. E.g. I have the full videos of interrogations of Soprunenko and Tokarev (the guy who told about Blokhin and the case with Walthers in Kalinin). So I had to ;)

That Walthers were used in Katyn is often asserted, but there is no evidence that they were. We only know that a bunch of Geco casings were found in the graves (not that many, too). The Walthers might have been used, but as a gun aficionado you know that the cartridges are compatible with many other guns available to the NKVD at the time, starting with the Brownings.

What probably happened is that people transferred Tokarev’s testimony about Blokhin’s case of Walthers to Katyn. It should be noted though that while some German 7,65 casings were found at Mednoye (at Kalinin), most others were of Soviet manufacture, so that testimony is not that precise. Indeed, it is doubtful that we should even accept Tokarev’s identification of the guns as Walthers, since he was testifying 50 years later, so the issues of memory reliability crop up. There were some non-Soviet guns used in Kalinin, but that’s that.

Gee, MSM being duped by fakers and being bitten by their internet ignorance? Tell me it ain’t so!

Last Friday we reported on a local man who claimed he regularly talked online with the gunman who murdered a reporter and photographer on live TV in Roanoke, Virginia. He said they got to know each other while playing games online for three years, and the killer, Vester Flanagan, talked about losing his job as a reporter and his anger at former co-workers. The man also said Flanagan, who used the name Bryce Williams on TV, supported the gamergate community. He showed us a gaming profile for Bryce Williams. We had an onslaught of emails and calls from online gamers saying we’d been duped. Among other things, they questioned that profile. This week, we asked a Georgia Tech scientist, who is also a gamer, to analyze the profile and other screenshots the man showed us. Our expert determined the profile had not been active long enough to support the man’s claim he’d known Flanagan three years. He found problems with other screenshots, enough to conclude the man’s story was not true. As a result we are retracting the story. We apologize for any confusion it caused.

The Disqus commenting system is not only incredibly annoying to use, it has enabled the worst kinds of racists and trolls to take over in a very big way. Sites that use Disqus are actively dragging the Internet into the gutter. Disqus is a nightmarishly awful pile of shit filled with the worst people in the country.

And in Sinai, this happened:

IEDs injure U.S. troops deployed on new ISIS front in Egypt

For months, the nearly 700 American soldiers deployed on the ground in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula have weathered a crisis all but indistinguishable from their fellow troops in Iraq.

Living amid blast walls topped with razor wire, riding only in up-armored vehicles, the troops face a constant threat of attacks from extremist groups loyal to the so-called Islamic State.

On Thursday, four of those troops were injured when their convoy rolled out of the “North Camp” just a few miles east of the Egypt-Israeli border and hit two improvised explosive devices.

None of the injuries were life-threatening, but it was the latest indication that the fight against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS and ISIL, is rapidly developing a new front in Egypt, the Arab world’s most populous and historically influential nation.

The U.S. troops stationed across the remote desert peninsula are caught in the middle of an insurgency that has intensified since the lead militant group there declared allegiance to ISIS.

This is actually the best US piece on the Daesh insurgency in the Sinai to date, but its still not equal to the best pieces the BBC has put out on the topic.

And even though the article doesn’t say it, I am again thankful our army has the MRAP, for it once again protected our soldiers from the murderous intentions of Radical Islamists.

: believing in the value of established and traditional practices in politics and society : relating to or supporting political conservatism

: not liking or accepting changes or new ideas

Interesting story—I’d never heard of him until today:

Seva Novgorodsev: The DJ who ‘brought down the USSR’

Any list of the BBC’s biggest radio DJs must include Seva Novgorodsev, famous all over the former Soviet Union for broadcasting pop music across the Iron Curtain and poking fun at the regime. On Friday, after 38 years on air, he hung up his headphones for good.

A mellow late-night-radio voice floats over the horn introduction to Stevie Wonder’s Sir Duke. “Good evening and welcome from London,” come the words in Russian. “Today we will focus on the most popular records of the week, both in Britain and the United States.”

With those words, broadcast late in the evening on Friday 10 June 1977, Seva Novgorodsev began his career as the BBC’s DJ for the Soviet Union. Over the next four decades, he would become an unofficial - and definitely unwelcome - ambassador for Western popular culture behind the Iron Curtain. […]
