Hurricanes and tornadoes happen. Mass murder is a deliberate choice made easy by unrestricted access to unlimited firearms and ammunition in an enabling culture that blows it off by saying “stuff happens.”
re: #1 Charles Johnson
Now I’m curious what the threshold is where we have to do something, according to Republicans.
Clearly it’s somewhere between 10 and 3,000 deaths, because the response to 9/11 was not “stuff happens” (and to be clear, it was appropriate that it was not - although Iraq was not the right response either).

Sheriff’s Office: 3 Dead, 1 Injured in Florida Shooting
A man in north Florida fatally shot two people, including his estranged wife, and critically injured a third before killing himself, authorities said.
Levy County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Scott Tummond said in an interview early Friday morning that the incident happened at a home in Inglis, about 50 miles from Gainesville.
Around 6:10 p.m. Thursday, the sheriff’s office began receiving 911 calls reporting shots fired, Tummond said. An EMS crew and law enforcement were dispatched.
Tummond said the EMS crew arrived first and found two men shot in the front yard of the home. One man, 68-year-old Walter S. Terhune of Inglis, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second, Otis G. Bean, who owned the home and whose age wasn’t immediately known, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

Texas woman who shot an elderly couple’s pet cat through the head with an arrow may soon lose her veterinary license, the Dodo reports.
Kristen Lindsey, who was a vet at the Washington Animal Clinic before being fired in April, bragged on Facebook about killing the cat, named Tiger, with a bow and arrow. The gruesome post contained a picture of a smiling Lindsey holding up a big orange-and-white tabby by the arrow embedded in the cat’s head.
“My first bow kill, lol,” she had written on the photo. “The only good feral tomcat is one with an arrow through it’s [sic] head! Vet of the year award … Gladly accepted.”

The car accidents one really gets me. People aren’t using cars as instruments to kill people. With guns, they are. A gun’s sole purpose is to kill someone or something at a quick and more efficient rate. That’s why they were invented. That’s why the gun changed warfare.

Totally. The problem is that agricultural policy, including the approval of GMO products, is subject to manipulation by large corporate interests in the US. It makes it hard as a non-specialist to have any idea whether the thing that just got approved is safe or not.
re: #114 wrenchwench
This is just another example where our political discussion is AWOL because too many of the actors (mostly GOP) are trying to ignore addressing today’s and tomorrow’s issues.
As for GMO - I have no problem with the commercialization of genetic engineering (note I used “engineering” not “editing”.) What I do object to is companies trying to claim ownership of pollen that happens to drift on air or on the hairs of insects, when convenient for them, but denying responsibility of same when it is inconvenient for them.
re: #111 wrenchwench
It’s very easy for people with plenty of food around them to talk about banning food that can help feed millions of people living in famine and war torn countries. That’s what annoys me the most about anti GMO people. All genetically modified organisms are not created equal. If you want to get technical, hybrid tomatoes and roses are GMOs. They’re designed to withstand climate changes and diseases that would otherwise kill off heirloom types of the same plants. Hell, some heirlooms came from some farmer mixing a red tomato with a yellow one (my grandpa did this, btw, he never passed on the seeds or named it, he just liked the mixture of the two) or some other experiment. I guess my issue is really the paranoia about it. There’s a big deal over a golden rice right now that has vitamin A added to it and it’s a hybrid that needs less water and is tougher in bad weather. It’s going to help in countries where people are literally going blind from a lack of that vitamin, so how is it bad?
The Roundup Ready shit is another issue entirely and that gets conflated with the good side of the GMOs. It’s not at all the same.

Sheriff In Charge Of Oregon Massacre Probe Posted Sandy Hook Truther Video
The sheriff investigating a mass shooting at an Oregon community college that left at least nine people dead posted a video to Facebook in 2013 that raised questions about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin posted a link to a YouTube video called “The Sandy Hook Shooting - Fully Exposed,” which summarized conspiracy theories surrounding the shooting and quickly racked up millions of views, about a month after the massacre took place. The post was deleted or made private sometime after 2:30 p.m. Friday.
“This makes me wonder who we can trust anymore…” Hanlin wrote. “Watch, listen, and keep an open mind.”

That favors a big organization and thus a fat wallet, and Jeb*’s is still the fattest out there.

In fairness, that’s the problem with just about every area of policy today. Nor does it help that plenty of experts go through a revolving door between industries and regulatory agencies (which are often underfunded). And that those large corporate interests can form super PACs to influence elections in ways that ordinary people can’t; or just pay large sums of money for PR campaigns (see BP post Gulf spill).
Add it all of that the fact that snake oil salespersons have access to the internet to scare people with lies, damn lies, and statistics posing as pseudo-science bullshit.

One of the things that has kind of amazed me is that we haven’t seen a lot of highly touted endorsements in the GOP primary. Maybe it’s still early, but we’re only 4 months away from the first votes being cast - seems like we should have seen some by now. Chris Matthews use to say that “democrats want to fall in love, republicans fall in line.” The endorsement primary was one of the ways that republicans would fall in line. I suppose the TP revolt might have something to do with all this?
re: #142 gocart mozart
It’s about as subtle as a brick to the head, but we Louisianans can be thick sometimes.
Gumbo PAC is a Democratic outfit, so I must say that I’m not thrilled with their excoriating Vitter for “huge spending” when our vital services are gasping for air and need more revenue fast.

re: #145 Joe Bacon
Nate Silver’s got a tracker for endorsements:
So far, Jeb’s in the lead with 35 “points” from three Senators and 20 Congresscretins. That would be the lowest total ever for a nominee at this point. The whole field totals just 133 points from 4 governors, 7 Senators and 58 House members making endorsements, not counting 4 House members who endorsed Perry and Walker.
By comparison, Hillary has 8 governors, 30 Senators and 112 Congresspeople all by herself.

re: #97 Blind Frog Belly White
How about if we make a gun where, if you pull the trigger, an airbag blows up in your face?
///Also note, those are auto ACCIDENTS. 30,000 people die because cars get used improperly.
We have 30,000 people a year dying because guns are used as intended.
In the 1960’s, there were more than 50,000 people a year dying from car wrecks.
Then we passed seatbelt laws, and put in airbags, and changed what windshields are made of, and wrote stricter drunk-driving laws, car frames and side panels were redesigned, different paving materials and tire treads, and a red light here and a speed bump there, ER’s came up with new trauma treatment methods and materials, cellphones meant ambulances got to accident scenes quicker….
The population has grown by 50% in the last 50 years, but the number of auto deaths is down 40%. People still drive as much or more, we didn’t sieze all the cars, people still die, BUT NOT AS MANYAS USED TO.
