GotNwes translates Chuck, chapter XII

ANALYSISIS: All about ‘mass shootings’ and mein kam — me

[Chuck Johnson’s latest screed, in plain English. Some differences from the original may exist.]

I was right. It was Muslims that did the shootings in California. I was right. I was right. I was right. Nyah nyah nyah. You’re just jealous of me!

It really bothers people I have a really good network of … people. I’ve also learned how the Narrative leads the media astray, but not me I’m not the media, and also too I tend to be really, really good at busting bogus stories, except when I am reporting them.

Johnson’s law number 12: nothing the media reports about guns is true. (Remember I am not the media!)

[ED: Johnson’s law number 1: a good bottle or two of whiskey always improves your writing.]

Let me explain all about these so-called “mass shotings,” because I’ve thought about them a lot. Especially recently. It takes my mind off my losing legal battles.

It’s been a while since my last Page, but the Department of Veteran’s Affairs had such an EPIC FAIL that I had to post about it:

VA botches demotions of execs who misused authority for personal gain, bonuses

The Page contains nothing about the president, guns or war. It’s just about governmental corruption and little about a bill that might fix part of the problem.

I do think we need to make Daesh pay for this latest attacks its run in on us, but here’s a story to help explain why scapegoating Muslims as a whole is a fool’s action:

Revealed: Brother of San Bernardino gunman is a decorated Navy veteran honored for his role in the war on terror

One family can have both a brave sailor and a rotten terrorist and I won’t damn the good man for his asshole brother. if that sounds like it contradicts what I said on the previous thread, it may well be such a contradiction.

I still can’t understand why he didn’t say anything about his brother’s decision to marry some niqabi from Saudi Arabia. If the shooter wanted a religious woman to marry, he could have gone to the ISNA yearly gatherings and found a hijabi Muslim woman instead of trying to find someone overseas. This has got to end.

A reminder that conservative humor isn’t really intended to be funny so much as a literal reflection of orthodox thought.

A South Carolina lawmaker has sent out a Christmas card featuring a photo of the Confederate flag that refers to “memories of a happier time” and suggests those who voted to remove the flag from in front of the Statehouse ask God for forgiveness for their “betrayal.”

Rep. Chris Corley said Thursday that he sent the cards to his Republican colleagues as a joke.

I lived in Australia when the mass murder occurred in Tasmania. It horrified the country. Toy shop owners removed all gun toys and smashed them in the streets. People lamented loudly that Oz risked becoming like the US. A strict law was passed with almost universal support. And no more massacres.

Hunters didn’t feel threatened. No one yelled about protecting themselves. I was still often encouraged to get a rifle and learn how to use it safely. Not because I was scared of my neighbors, but because I was often in the outback where car collisions with large animals occur. The decent thing to do is to end the animal’s suffering quickly.

Times like these, I miss Oz….

I’ve heard neurodiverse used by people on the autism spectrum to ask for greater acceptance of differences. OTOH, I’ve also heard it used to demand acquiescence to inappropriate behavior. Chuck is likely in the latter group.

I love Colorado and have considered retiring there in 5 years or so. But that gun shit is too much for me after living in Oz and Hawaii for my adult life. I just haven’t lived places where a gun is a fashion accessory and where gun deaths are a regular occurrence. No need to start doing so when I’m old!

The mail-order lawyer is the one defending Chuck against the National Abortion Foundation, who retained Morrison & Foerster in SF. Like using a BB gun to take down a destroyer.

The Gawker libel suit lawyer has a personal injury practice, and about Chuck’s age. He has a history of RW causes. But essentially another BB gun against a PT boat — Gawker’s counsel is a big firm in St. Louis that seems to know its way around federal courts.

Chuck’s pockets are not deep enough to hire a really good lawyer, and all his so-called billionaire friends seem to be avoiding his crowdfunding for a legal defense fund of only $10,000. MoFo’s lawyers could burn through that amount in one frackin’ day.

CMP is to provide the subpoenaed material for attorney’s eyes only, so I’m not sure if and when it will show up on PACER. But you are correct in saying the deadline has passed.

As for the 5th, they already tried that, and the courts noted that you can’t plead self-incrimination during discovery in a civil suit. So they tried a 1st amendment appeal, which got shot down. If they don’t comply, then the judge could charge them with contempt. The NAF has already moved for that and provided the judge an order to sign off on, if he were so disposed.

Probably we’ll hear all about it on Monday.

Nyet  Dec 5, 2015 • 1:29:26am

So, France was serious about shutting down the radical mosques.

usatoday.com

Cazaneuve said Wednesday that a “large police contingent” closed one mosque in Lagny-sur- Marne, a suburb in eastern Paris, placing nine “radicalized individuals” under house arrest and barring 22 from leaving the country.

In the raid, police confiscated a 9mm handgun, a computer hard drive hidden behind a wall and jihadist propaganda. Cazaneuve said police discovered documents about an unregistered Quranic school.

Two other mosques, one in Gennevilliers in the northwest suburbs and one in Lyon, were closed within the past week. The interior minister referred to the three mosques as “pseudo-religious associations.”

Very good, even if a little bit late.

Bill and Opus for 2016!  Dec 5, 2015 • 1:45:42am

Reset that national embarrassment counter for Texas back to zero.

Texas secession resolution passes GOP committee, headed for Party vote Saturday

It was introduced by State Republican Executive Committee member Tanya Robertson, who represents parts of Harris, Galveston and Brazoria counties. In November, she told the Chronicle that many of her constituents had voiced support for a reborn Republic of Texas, the short-lived nation of the mid-1800s.

The resolution reads, “If the federal government continues to disregard the constitution and the sovereignty of the State of Texas, the State of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation.”

The SREC is the governing body of the Republican Party of Texas, and it decides what will appear on the March 1 Republican primary ballot. The Party is currently assembled in Austin to author the ballot. On Friday, the independence resolution passed the Resolutions Committee, which selects items to go before the full 40-member assembly on Saturday. Of 12 resolutions presented at the committee Friday, five were approved, including independence, members said.

Not at the moment. Charles and others have conjectured that the NAF could be preparing a criminal case against CMP, Daleiden and possibly Chuck, too.

But if Chuck refuses to comply with the subpoena, he could end up in the pokey for contempt and be fined. It’s federal court, so refusing to comply would be unwise, given his lack of a convincing argument or reason.

And I tried to access the response and the court has sealed it, so it may contain what the subpoena has demanded. There are dozens of exhibits, as well.

So I discovered that some significant figures in evangelical apologetics - such as William Lane Craig and Michael Licona - actually doubt the historicity of the “resurrection of saints” narrative in Matthew 27:

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

But that’s not the most curious part. It’s the fact that they think this doubt is compatible with biblical inerrantism.

Oh no. One of the lawyers for the Farook family is apparently a false flag Sandy Hook truther. Rachel Maddow showed a clip last night. I think this link only shows part of what Rachel showed.

I had seen a presser earlier with this lawyer, David Chesley, where he seemed more reasonable. He did go off on 2nd amendment rights, and how it’s “normal” to have 4,000 rounds. But in this 2nd clip apparently taken last night, he brings up Sandy Hook and implies that the pipe bombs in Farook’s garage may have been planted.

Chelsey added there is “a lot of motivation at this time to emphasize or create incidents that will cause gun control or prejudice or hatred toward the Muslim community.”

Just OMG. Yeah, this was a fake incident created by those of us that want more gun regulations. Just OMG.

Rachel went ballistic. Me too. This guy needs to be fired by the family asap.

No, they think it is wholly inerrant, but inerrancy evolved to accept “non-Western modes of thought”, so to say. This new crop of inerrantists is not bothered by formal-logical contradictions as such as long as they convince themselves that such were acceptable in ancient Near East as a part of rhetoric or way of thinking.

Nyet  Dec 5, 2015 • 3:29:03am

Craig:

This is a possibility, I think. But it might seem more plausible to say that the genetic similarity of all living things is due to their being related to one another. For example, in a recent article by the population geneticist Dennis Venema of Trinity Western University[1], he specifies three genetic phenomena which are difficult for the special creationist to account for. Let me share with you these three phenomena that he pinpoints.

First, he says, the deep genetic similarity between organisms is far in excess of what is required in order for DNA to produce similar amino acids and proteins which would govern the types of organisms that are produced.[2] The genetic code permits 64 different combinations of its elements. You can combine the different elements of the genetic code into 64 different combinations. But these different combinations produce only 20 amino acids. So there is a kind of redundancy here - the same amino acid can be produced by several different combinations of the genetic code. You’ve got 64 different combinations but only 20 amino acids that result. So the same amino acid can be produced by different combinations of the elements of the code. So in order for two organisms to share similar amino acid segments, and so to be genetically similar, they don’t have to have that deep structural similarity on the level of the genetic code. And yet, time and again we find that organisms which are thought to be related share not only similar amino acid sequences but deeper similarity of genetic code combinations. This deeper unnecessary similarity would be explicable if the organisms share a common descent and hence a common genetic code. But it would seem to be unmotivated if each one were a special creation.

The second phenomenon that Venema points to is the organization of the genes of related organisms[3] suggests a common ancestry. The organization of their genes, he thinks, supports common ancestry. Two species which are thought to have recently diverged from a common ancestor have not only many of the same genes but they also have the same ordering, or sequence, of those genes. This similarity of ordering is not necessary in order for the organisms to have similar body plans and functions. They can have the same genes and hence similar body plans and functions but they don’t need to have the same ordering. And yet, they do! Special creation seems to leave this similarity unmotivated whereas common ancestry would make it intelligible. They share their ordering of their genes because they are descended from one another.

Finally, the third phenomenon is the presence of shared so-called pseudogenes in related organisms suggests common descent. A pseudogene is a defunct gene sequence that has been inactivated through mutation. It was once a functioning gene sequence but a mutation occurred which inactivated it so it is now defunct. Organisms which are thought to be closely related are found to have the same non-functioning pseudogenes even in the same order even though these defunct genes do nothing in either organism. Such similarity would make sense given common ancestry but it is hard to explain why God would reproduce in one organism the broken parts of another organism. To borrow the automotive analogy once more, it is hard to see why the designer would reproduce in one automotive model a non-functioning handle found in another model.

These arguments are far from compelling and they fall far short of demonstrating anything so sweeping as the thesis of common ancestry - that all living organisms are descended from a single primordial ancestor. Still, I think they do make special creation look rather ad hoc, or contrived, in light of the evidence. So the genetic evidence is, I think, one of the best evidences in support of the thesis of common ancestry.[4]

Illinois House bill releases some funds

Unlike a similar bill that passed the House but was not sent to the Senate, the new version adds spending requested by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner as well as some projects sought by Democratic legislators.

Senate Democrats indicated the Senate will convene Monday to take up the legislation.
The vote came a day after a rare conference among Rauner and the legislative leaders over the lack of a state spending plan despite the budget year nearing its halfway point. It adds money Rauner sought for road salt to battle snow drifts and training for police and includes Democrats’ demands for funding domestic-violence ?shelters and energy-bill assistance for the poor.

Rauner acknowledged it boosts the deficit he rails against but told reporters that he wanted to address “essential government services so that the people of Illinois can be safe.”

Czech MEP Miloslav Ransdorf (Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia, KSČM), 62, who was detained in Switzerland on Thursday over an alleged attempt at financial fraud, was released by the Swiss police today, Czech Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Michaela Lagronova told CTK.

The Slovak Interior Ministry´s spokesman Ivan Netik told the Reuters agency that Ransdorf and three Slovak nationals, who were arrested together with him, attempted to draw 350 million euros from a bank in Zurich using false identity documents.

The Slovak dennikn.sk server wrote that three Slovaks attempted to draw the above sum from a bank in which an account in Ransdorf´s name is kept on Thursday. The server wrote that the Slovaks were stooges.

dennikn.sk wrote that three Slovaks together with Ransdorf entered the Swiss bank, which, however, refused to carry out the huge transaction because the birth date on a document submitted was not correct. The men allegedly started to be aggressive and the police had to intervene. An investigation into the origin of the money started, the server wrote.

Are debtors’ prisons returning?

In Ferguson, Missouri, the equivalent of 75% of the city’s population had outstanding arrest warrants. These warrants were not for committing a crime but for failing to appear in court or not paying traffic and parking violations. According to a U.S. Department of Justice report, in a city of 21,000 residents, the Ferguson Police Department issued 33,000 arrests warrants for unpaid tickets in 2013 alone.

In Illinois, the Department of Corrections charged a man $20,000 to cover the cost of his incarceration, according to the Chicago Tribune. Homeless and practically destitute after recently serving a 15-month prison sentence for a nonviolent drug offense, he had no ability to pay his fine. If he had not died in June, it is likely he would have been locked up for his inability to pay.

I’m going to repost a thing from reddit in it’s entirety as it is thing of beauty.

“They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no head; it will produce no flour.” - Hosea 8:7 (NIV)

Mr. Trump’s candidacy is the culmination of a process that began nearly thirty years ago, when the RNC allowed the despicable Lee Atwater to implement his “Southern Strategy”. It consisted of freezing out any Republican who dared to contemplate political compromise and realpolitik, and whipping up Southern evangelicals, libertarian kooks and states-rights radicals into an unthinking frenzy of blind ideological and theological mania, calculated to overwhelm any and all balanced views and reasonable analyses of what the party’s - or the nation’s - longterm and practical political objectives might actually be.

Since first being infected by the Atwater brain-disease, the Republic Party has acted like a horse breeder gone mad; instead of trying to improve the vigor of their political stable, they have actively and enthusiastically crossbred to increase its genetic susceptibility to political diseases: demagoguery, parochialism, falseness, paranoia, maliciousness, dogmatism, jingoism, racism, sexism, anti-intellectualism, close-mindedness and arrogance. These are all, of course, highly contagious conditions even under normal circumstances, but the GOP long ago decided to make their breeding stock doubly susceptible to such chronic infections.

Now, a wealthy outsider has appeared out of nowhere to enter the race - and from the way he struts around the parade ring, he appears quite capable of taking home the cup. While the GOP is still slowly training awkward colts to be political starters, he is already a fully finished product that has suddenly shown up, and is standing at the post.

The GOP’s problem is that Trump The Donald (by Fred, out of Mary Anne) is not of the purebred Republican line, and has no GOP pedigree. Rather, he is a random, one-in-three-hundred-million genetic fluke, a human Seabiscuit, created and trained entirely outside the soundproof bubble of the GOP paddock. So it is no wonder these self-absorbed stable owners, who have not bothered to look at the competition beyond their own fence rail in three decades, sneeringly discount his potential to win.
In their arrogance, they fail to see that Trump’s unique and privileged rich-boy upbringing has instilled within him not just some, but virtually all of the political deformities they have so long tried to breed into their own stock. And they stupidly remain unaware that he in fact carries them all in much higher concentrations than they could ever achieve with a candidate who meekly toes the party line for a decade or two, and passively allows himself to be groomed for The Big Race by those cautious billionaire owners and chart-gazing strategist-trainers that make up the very innermost of the GOP’s inner circles.

This is the reason for Trump’s remarkable popularity among the hoi polloi punters that populate the Republican grandstand: his appeal to the crude, the lowbrow and the unthinking is so strong because he is the concentrated sum total of exactly those racing qualities which the GOP has been promising to deliver to their base for the last three decades. And now, if the Republican establishment wants to win this race, they must take the desperate gamble of saturating the field with the rest of its stable, and sacrificing every single yearling it has left in its unfinished breeding program - however temperamentally unready to race, malformed, misshapen, and uncoordinated they may be.

And that is why Trump will remain the betting favourite on the GOP totalizer board, until the very moment the convention gates are flung open, and Mr. Priebus hollers, “Annnd they’rrre OFF!”

Its rider is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems; and he has a name inscribed that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in[h] blood, and his name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, wearing fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron; he will tread the wine press of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name inscribed, “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly in midheaven, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, 18 to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of the mighty, the flesh of horses and their riders—flesh of all, both free and slave, both small and great.” 19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against the rider on the horse and against his army. 20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed in its presence the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were killed by the sword of the rider on the horse, the sword that came from his mouth; and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.

That’s pretty good, especially for the horse race metaphor. But Seabiscuit won a lot of races. Trump The Donald (out of Fred by Mary Anne) has yet to face a primary race, so he is as yet untested.

If he manages to take any primary, then I might worry. For now, I’m just hopeful his bluster and bombast will wear thin.

And Rubio is wondering about why we are not talking about bomb control.

High explosives are already highly regulated, but there are just too many ways homemade explosives can be made to prevent terrorists from making bombs from time to time. The best we can do is keep up on the variants of terrorist IEDs and make sure police bomb squads and SWAT teams have that information.

I wonder how true that is. If Mr Arbuckle was faced with life or death because of his faith would he really go the martyr route? Just like the bluster about being a “good guy with a gun” in an active shooter situation. I don’t buy it. Most of the time anyway.

I get why religion exists. The world is scary, people need something larger than themselves to hold on to, otherwise, sometimes it would seem like WTF is the point of it all. It also allows for community and common ground so that good things can flourish. But far too often none of that happens, more like the opposite.

I was raised by Amway right wing evangelicals. I got sent to Bible study groups that used Hal Lindsey books as study guides. And yet, at no time was I asked not to think for myself, scoff at science, or to rely solely on prayer to solve problems. My parents, thank goodness, were smart enough to know I would need to have some critical thinking skills and smarts to get me through life. I had more books than toys. By age 10 I had a collection of shells and various items from nature, all labeled with their latin names. So it’s possible for both religion and reason to exist together, even if they don’t always get along. As I got older, most of the shitty things that happened to me, and later my son, were at the hands of “good Christian people” and I gave up on the traditional idea of church and religious community.

My dad’s mom didn’t like organized religion at all. She said God was all over the place, not in a fancy building on Sundays. Why do I have a knee-jerk reaction to such blatant Texas shaming? I dunno. Maybe it’s because we have over 3.3 million voting Democrats in this large state. Maybe it’s because in our fairly recent history (20 years ago) Democrats were in control (Ann Richards?) Yes, the Rethugs got into control here faster than they did other states, but they now control 33 statehouses — the methods being a combination of many things, but gerrymandering and voter disenfranchisement are 2 large parts.

Wonder what Wisconsin would look like after 20 years.

In the 2012 election, we were only the 16th reddest state, BTW. That’s out of 24 reds.

The Latest: Texas Church Holds Rally in Support of Mosque

5:10 p.m.

Amid a legal battle that has delayed the arrival of Syrian refugees in Texas, a suburban Houston church held a rally in support of its neighbor — a mosque — as well as local Muslims.

More than 50 members from the Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church and others lined the road leading up to the Clear Lake Islamic Center as people went to Friday prayers.

The church and mosque are neighbors.

Church members held up signs that read “Love Thy Neighbor No Exceptions” and “We Support Our Muslim Neighbors.”

Ibrahim Ezghair, associate imam at the Islamic center, called the rally a “really nice gesture.”

The Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, said “it’s important to stand on the side of respect and love and tolerance.” […]

Interfaith crowd gathers at Denver Mosque to foil fear, bind ties

More than 200 people gathered at a Denver mosque Thursday evening, praying, lighting candles, making greetings cards and hanging ribbons in the name of peace and unity for all.

The diverse crowd assembled at Colorado Muslim Society, on South Parker Road, at the event organized by Meet the Middle East, a group fostering positive relationships between the United States and the Middle East, and the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado. […]

At the start of the event, people took simple, colorful ribbons and tied them to the wrought iron fence at the mosque facing Parker Road.

Some motorist passing by blew their horns and waved in a show of support.

People at the assembly also wrote cards expressing encouragement, support, peace and understanding.

Roger Teel, of the Mile High Church, started his card saying: To my Muslim Brothers and Sisters.

He ended it with: Peace and Love. […]

So eager to extend the argument that the president is soft on terrorism that he fails to read the very article he’s quoting.

Of course, they omit the preceding paragraph of his radio address, and the rest of the paragraph they quoted from when he speaks specifically about ISIL:

We’re also learning more about the killers. And we’re working to get a full picture of their motives—why they committed these revolting acts. It’s important to let the investigators do their job. We need to know all the facts. And at my direction, federal law enforcement is helping in every way that they can. We’re going to get to the bottom of this.

It is entirely possible that these two attackers were radicalized to commit this act of terror. And if so, it would underscore a threat we’ve been focused on for years—the danger of people succumbing to violent extremist ideologies. We know that ISIL and other terrorist groups are actively encouraging people—around the world and in our country—to commit terrible acts of violence, often times as lone wolf actors. And even as we work to prevent attacks, all of us—government, law enforcement, communities, faith leaders—need to work together to prevent people from falling victim to these hateful ideologies.

The sheer amount of gun fetishism simply oozes off the picture. I’m a big fan of and collector of video games, I’m not going to plaster Christmas greetings with game pictures and references to demonstrate my adoration of them, and if I did, the only danger I’d have from them is eye strain, rather than someone forgetting their fucking safety because they brought the wrong gun for the picture.

Please, lady. You knew very well whom you were dating.

People—both men & women—tend to think they’re special, that this time it’ll be different because of how smart, loyal, patient, etc. they are, or because they have good intentions (even if they aren’t useful/correct intentions).

It doesn’t help that people also often tend to fall in love with who they imagine someone to be, who they want them to be, not who they actually are.

We all have cognitive biases, no matter how rational believe ourselves to be. We are our own worst enemies.

Someone needs to make an advent calendar with stickers that you can write the number of daily dead/wounded on.

It boggles the mind when you think about it: for each person wounded are killed there are probably at least half a dozen others (most likely many, many more) who are negatively affected. It’s like it ripples out, multiplying exponentially.

We’re destroying ourselves incrementally. And Da’esh is cheering us on. *smh*

Truly enjoying the logic of some of the gun absolutists.

There’s already laws preventing gun running from lax states to strong law states, so writing new laws that make it illegal is redundant.

Right, and doing nothing to close those loopholes will perpetuate the existing condition.

Oh, 100 million gun owners, and we’re not all criminals.

100,000 people are shot every year. 30,000 die (20k are suicides) Considering that works out to - 1 out of 1,000 people who own guns uses them and injures someone. Not nearly as uncommon once you start running numbers.

To the best of my recollection, Israel has said that ISIS isn’t an ‘existential threat’ as far they’re concerned. And that’s with ISIS actually operating, you know, in the country right fucking next door to them.

Piker. Guy was caught down in the Carolinas with 5000 guns or more (which the police officially call an ass-load of guns). Oh, and the guy’s family claims all were legally purchased. And yet there’s 100s of guns that have had their serial numbers removed.

Well yeah, but it’s South by dog Carolina, where thousands of guns, hundred of chainsaws, and opium and heroin trafficking draw responses from neighbors like, “He’s always been a good cat, but you know, people do things”

Ha!

Top Jeb Bush donor would vote for Hillary over Donald

One of Florida’s biggest conservative Republican moneymen — and a billionaire backer of Jeb Bush — is so disgusted by Donald Trump’s candidacy that if he has to, he’ll do the unthinkable:

“If I have a choice — and you can put it in bold — if I have a choice between Trump and Hillary Clinton, I’m choosing Hillary,” Miami healthcare magnate Mike Fernandez told the Miami Herald on Friday. “She’s the lesser of two evils.”

Jesus Christ, this Brownie asshole still blaming “Nagin and Blanco, who refused to evacuate.” WTF, it was the largest evacuation in American history up to that time. I was in it, although from Baton Rouge, not NOLA, and I’ll never forget that long, massive exodus. Who knows how many thousands of lives it saved. Pissing on these clowns with their denial of reality would be a waste of our precious bodily fluids.

re: #330 HappyWarrior

Seriously it just comes off as a childish tantrum. Erick knows deep down the op-Ed makes sense but he like a lot of conservatives clings to his guns.

They give him a false sense of security in a world he can’t control. Having a gun won’t ensure you won’t lose your job, or that you won’t get into an car accident, or that your wife won’t leave you, or that your friends won’t figure out you’re an asshole, or that you’ll have enough money to live on when you retire, or that you’ll even be able to get a job if you don’t.

Life is uncertainty. Conservatives can’t handle uncertainty. Anxious minds look for a focus, some single cause of their anxiety, which they can then do something about. The gun makes them think they can take out the source. But after they get one, they find it’s not enough. So they want a bigger one, and more ammo. But that only makes them feel better for a little, so they want even more and even bigger guns.

Really, it’s much the same as any other hoarder - they acquire things to give them a sense of control that those things can’t really give them.
