Carlos Santana Praises Obama’s SOTU, Compares Trump to a Poop-Flinging Ape

Wonder how long before The Dumbass tweets some insult about Carlos ? Any bets on whether or not the term “had-been” will feature?
It was good. Some of the comments (especially Hispanic) were depressing, but there was plenty of pushback: enough to make me feel better.
Carlos is a national treasure who’s very existence invalidates Trump’s atavistic rhetoric. I think I’ll order his latest CD. Can anyone confirm he’ll get the max revenue from it? I am old school and consider physical media my archive copy.
The good news is that I am meant to fly to the warmth of Arizona tomorrow to spend the long holiday weekend with family.
The bad news is that my health is not very good at all. As I have mentioned, I am dealing with a serious and incurable condition…that some kind of virus might be exacerbating.
Travel is my passion in life, and I want to get out of wintry Chicago and spend some days with family in the sun.
I made a similar post last year ahead of a much longer trip, and it ended up just fine. However, I am sorry to say I am a fair bit weaker now than I was then.
Guess there is nothing to do but pack and make a final decision in about 15 hours.
I wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone, INCLUDING Trump.

The thing I am reminding myself here is that the actual dealing with the airport and getting on the plane and flying part is really going to be the most stressful aspect of the whole trip. Once I am there it will be mostly about sitting in the sun. I am going about preparing tonight like I will definitely go, then decide late tomorrow morning.

It’s too late to help for this one, but have you looked into TSA PreCheck and things like pre-boarding? I don’t know what the criteria is for pre-boarding, but that would cut back on the standing in line while you wait for everyone else to put their luggage in the overhead compartment, and PreCheck makes the security line a lot better - plus no need to remove shoes/laptop/light jacket.
I am hoping everything turns out well.

Well, the first comment references going from Chicago to AZ.
Depending on where in AZ, there is an Amtrak line that runs from Chicago to LA. However, it is going to be somewhat expensive and chew up a lot of time (my guess is close to 2 days) one way.
Bus would be cheaper but that’s still an awful lot of time.

Yeah, I’ve never bought one either and that’s part of my reason too. The other parts are that I don’t enjoy gambling, and I understand the odds. The machine is better because most people have a tendency to pick numbers that cluster, and that means you could pick the same numbers as other people, which means you would share the winnings.

Carlos Santana — as if I needed another reason to love this man
Remember that guy who shot up the movie theater in Louisiana? Turns out he was an admirer of Dylann Roof and Golden Dawn. But that’s not the most disturbing thing about him:
Houser had a long history of erratic behavior in the Georgia and Alabama communities where he lived before drifting to Lafayette, a city where his uncle had lived decades earlier.
In 2008, a Georgia judge ordered him detained for a mental evaluation after relatives claimed he was a danger to himself and others. But that judge did not have him involuntarily committed, which could explain how he passed a federal background check in 2014. He legally bought the .40-caliber handgun he used in the shooting from a pawn shop in Phenix City, Alabama, where he became estranged from his family, lost his businesses and faced eviction from his home.

re: #101 Belafon
The machine is better because most people have a tendency to pick numbers that cluster, and that means you could pick the same numbers as other people, which means you would share the winnings.
But, if you pick your own numbers you can avoid that. For example, one of your numbers should be over 31 because so many people play birthdates, and they are less likely to pick a run of consecutive numbers because they seem somehow less likely than “random” ones. Hence “my” numbers that I have never actually used.
(I also like to annoy people who ask me to pick a number from 1 to 10 by picking 1 or 10, but that’s just me.)

Now see there’s another reason I have never bought a lottery ticket. I honestly wouldn’t want to win one due to the seriously high hassle quotient. While I could pretty easily and quickly spend maybe 100k, I dunno what I would do with any more than that. Managing a major charity fund would be like a, yanno, job and I really like being retired. I quite enjoy my life just as it is and I never reproduced so…

You’re right, but, like I said, most people tend to cluster. They don’t even understand random properly. I liked the comment in this comic: sufficientlyremarkable.com:
“People have an inherently narrow view of the world, and an even works perception of randomness. Tell these riders to arrange themselves randomly in the car, and they’re likely to spread themselves out evenly, even though randomness allows for some of them to clump together.”
As for the pick a random number, I’ve told my kids the same thing, as well as answer 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 if they are told to pick five random numbers, or 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 if they have to be different.

My only lottery story: Back when the NY million-dollar lottery was a big deal and big money, I met a guy who had won it. Nicknamed Lucky, even before the win. He was a boozer and degenerate gambler who needed just over a year to piss away his entire lump-sum payout. Lucky or not? Before you decide, consider that a few months later he had a major heart attack while driving on the BQE. But the driver behind him, who had noticed his erratic driving before he pulled over and collapsed, was a cardiologist who stopped and saved his life.

GOP bill would allow guns on school grounds, classroom buildings
Those with concealed weapons permits could carry guns on school grounds — and in some cases in school buildings — under a bill a Republican leader hopes to get through the Legislature in the next two months.
Senate President Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) said the measure is intended to make sure weapons permit holders aren’t inadvertently committing crimes when they drop their kids off at school.
“I don’t want to see that happen to well-intentioned law-abiding people,” she said.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said the proposal would make the state more dangerous.
“This is insane,” Barrett said. “Isn’t there anybody in the majority party that wants to get serious about gun violence?”
And how exactly will anyone be able to tell the difference between a legally-carrying permit holder and someone just carrying a gun because they want to?

Even just foam layers will help - the water’s not going to lose heat fast with some insulation. But hot water can be stuck between it and the insulation and that will really slow the heat loss down.

Water is a fantastic insulator and therefore a lousy conductor. Just don’t overheat the water (as long as you can touch it, I would think it’s fine) and don’t add it directly to the tank. It should be fine overnight with that, and you can repeat in the morning if necessary.

While broadcasting from the refuge on Wednesday, Santilli said that Grasty had turned his granddaughter into a “prostitute.”
“That judge was prostituting his granddaughter for political purposes,” he opined. “I’m going to call it for what it is. If it were my granddaughter, I would not treat her like a prostitute like he did.”
According to Santilli, opponents of Bundy’s militants were a “bunch of effing communists” because they had allowed the girl to express her fear in public.
“What he did with his granddaughter is disgusting,” he continued. “It’s called prostitution, okay? Except you gave it up for free… She’s a young girl, she did just a masterful dramatic performance.”
“The only reason that anyone needs to be fearful about what’s going on around here are the corrupt bastards like her grandfather. He needs to be fearful because we’re going to investigate and we’re going to bring some justice to a judge.”

He knows how many Americans feel totally alienated from modern politics and are fed up with politicians.
He knows that a lot of Americans have little or no idea how government really functions, about checks and balances and the compromises necessary to govern a large nation.
He knows that a lot of Americans seem to actively enjoy reacting at a gut level to unverified information as long as that information corresponds to their preconceived notions and reinforces their sense of group identity.

AP headline writer doing their best to admit uncomfortable truth:
No Clear Motive Seen in Louisiana Theater Shooter’s Journal
No “clear” motive, eh?
That’s not the same thing as not having a motive.
Let’s see what the body of the AP article includes:
[…] but the drifter’s own words portray him as a mentally unstable man filled with hatred for his country and for people who didn’t share his views.
John Russell Houser described the U.S. as a “filth farm” filled with “soft targets” in his hand-written, 40-page journal, which police released Wednesday along with nearly 600 pages of investigative reports.
“If you have not stood against filth, you are now a soft target,” the 59-year-old wrote.
[…]
Houser also railed against women, gays and blacks and wrote about several presidential candidates, including Donald Trump. Elsewhere, he thanked a man accused of killing nine people inside a South Carolina church on June 17 for giving him a “wake up call.” Houser described the shooting suspect, Dylann Roof, as “green but good.”
[…]
“Comments posted in his own writing revealed his ideals and that he had battled his local government and had a hatred for the United States Government. Houser’s interests also included ‘Golden Dawn’ which is a Greek organization with neo-Nazi beliefs,’” one report stated.
[…]
Maybe the AP headline writer could have mentioned just one of those?

Mindless drivel is all they are good at now, landfill for the mind.
They are also carefully avoiding the flood of recriminating hate mail as well as threats of boycott or even outright violence that would accompany any assertion that this person might be a Right Wing domestic terrorist.
[…]
Houser, who had been drifting since his eviction in 2014 from his Alabama home, suffered for decades from mental health problems, including manic depression and bipolar disorder, and his extreme views had been made known through online posts over the years, praising white supremacist David Duke and Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.
His journal paints a clear picture of a sexist, homophobic, racist who feared America’s culture was crumbling around him.
[…]
[…] Houser wrote. “The US is the enemy of good, of God.”
[…]
“Had Dylan [sic] Roof reached political maturity he would have seen the word is not n****r, but liberal. But thank you for the wake up call Dylann,” Houser wrote.
[…]
One line down, he wrote “Yusuf” and then “very fine,” possibly a reference to Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez, who killed four U.S. servicemen and mortally wounded a fifth when he opened fire at two military sites in Chattanooga, Tenn., less than two weeks before Houser’s shooting.
[…]
The first line, just under the title “Random Thoughts,” is “America is a filth farm.”
He goes on to list his favorite movies, songs and bands, followed by another list entitled “Lies of the century.”
Among them: “women are on average equal to men (mentally or physically),” “blacks are on average mentally equally to whites,” “God is not good,” and “America is not close to economic collapse.”
Under the heading “America is in the business of,” Houser lists “making whores and prostitutes of girls and women,” “making sexual deviants (homosexuals) of normal people,” and “censoring people who love what is moral.”
[…]
Houser also references political figures, including Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump.
Of Trump, Houser declared, “I am not his biggest fan,” and he had written earlier in the journal that the “surprise that Trump (or anyone else) could take control of this foolish nation is no surprise to me. Stupidity rains [sic].”
And though Houser rails against liberals, he has few kind words for the conservative Fox News network.
He counted the statement “Fox news is conservative” among his “Lies of the century” and wrote that Fox “is as guilty as all other networks, but has a different assignment: to weaken the strong.”
Houser sounds like the masses on the hate websites.
And don’t think his occasional criticisms of Fox as somehow making Houser different than the hate right. As I noted yesterday, Michelle Malkin laments at how Fox is not conservative enough.
What the AP headline writer and many others in this country do now want to publicly accept is that America has a real problem of violent right wing, usually racist, fanatics, clinging to their guns and other weapons, and lashing out in the most violent of ways.
These are the American terrorists, that tonight’s GOP “debate” I expect to avoid wholly.

In March 1995, the American Life League boycotted the then-owners of Miramax, the Walt Disney Company over the film Priest, in which a Roman Catholic priest deals with a variety of issues including his own homosexuality. Subsequently, ALL charged that Disney had concealed subliminal sexual messages in the animated films The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin. Disney denied all claims made by American Life League.[15] Snopes states the ALL claims about both Aladdin[16] and The Little Mermaid[17] are false. However, their claim about The Lion King is listed by the site as “undetermined”.[18]

Honestly, the audio version of Harry Potter is the best way to intake the story. The narrator won grammys and numerous other awards for the work. He had to perform something like 134 distinct voices.
I actually paid full price for the audio cassettes as it wasn’t originally available on audible. Do not regret one cent of it.

Read the first Harry Potter and found it pretty decent but was never inspired to read further. Have seen most of the films but am not inspired to watch any of them again.
LOTR, however, is an Xmas tradition with me and my kids, and now includes the whole Hobbit trilogy.

I have seen one of the F&F franchise as a result of being in a hotel room somewhere in Maine where there was literally nothing else to do after a gig.
Die Hard I is it for me.

I have never been big into cop movies or those sort of blow-stuff-up adventure movies. Love anything historical, occasional science-fiction/fantasy stuff (if it is pseudo or alternative historical) but no bad ass mofos jumping and shooting.
For that, I loved Hot Fuzz, which, as I gather, refs almost all those movies.

My hosts here in Kuala Lumpur just told me about the Jakarta bombings. I may put off that visit for a calmer time.
And yes, I am in KL. Arrived around 5:30 pm local time. Took me 90 minutes to go through immigration, baggage claim, customs, exchange currency desk and SIM card store — long enough to just miss the 6:30 bus to my hosts’ neighborhood.
But I had a tasty dinner, and the taxi driver was playing hits of the ’90s on his stereo, so I’m OK.
In the 80s here, temperature wise, too.

Understandable then. I was impressed at how the film succeeded repeatedly in matching the images I had in my head when I read them as a teenager. But without that effect, I can see how it would be a real snoozefest.

Mexican Cartels Have Seized Control of the U.S. Drug Market
A new analysis from the Drug Enforcement Agency shows that seven Mexican transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) have seized complete control of the U.S. drug market. Mexican cartels deliver drugs to more cities in the U.S. than any other transnational gang, including those from Asia, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic.
Throughout the country, Mexican TCOs wield unrivaled power, dominating the trafficking of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana. Mexico is also the biggest producer of clandestine Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has been deemed responsible for 700 deaths since 2013.

We Were Wrong: More American Children Die From Accidental Shootings Than We Originally Thought
The official government tally—69 deaths among children younger than 15 in 2013—likely undercounts the true number of children who die from gun accidents by half, according to an investigation published by the New York Times in 2013. According to CDC estimates, 538 children under 15 were injured as a result of gun accidents in 2013 alone, and 9,818 were injured between 2001 and 2013.

Ted Cruz’s birther problem grows as more constitutional law scholars say he can’t be president
*snicker*
A growing number of constitutional law scholars are arguing that Ted Cruz’s birth in Canada makes him ineligible to become president. Their argument could prove a thorn in the side of the senator, who is a zealous originalist on most constitutional questions—with what seems like a notable exception.
The issue has moved to the center of the presidential campaign, with Cruz’s rise in the polls and Donald Trump claiming that Cruz needs to prove he’s eligible to run by getting a declaratory judgment in federal court.

I met him at a party several years ago. He and his partner (now wife) were lovely people. Very gracious to my daughters who were enormous fans. He told us his favorite movie (ours too) was galaxy quest and that thry could barely shoot the scene in which they shoot the advertisement for the big box store without breaking into giggles.

I suspect that hare-brained investments are a big factor. This might be a good example:
XTI Aircraft Company
This is yet another ducted fan miracle plane, with SEC approval “pending” and $18M already pledged.
I am not saying that this particular project is a scam or an automatic failure, but someone who knows the history of these projects, extending back 60 years or more, would be very leery indeed of putting real money into it. An aggravating factor is that many nominally qualified investment advisers are themselves ignorant of these kinds of ideas. They don’t know enough to even know that they need to know more. They are therefore as easily taken in as the rubes they are alleged to be advising.

If I were to come into $600M (roughly what I figure you’d end up with after winning $1.5B and doing the cash option), I would set aside about $50M of that to take care of the rest of my and my wife’s lives (very very very ) comfortably and pay for a few things for the kids, and declare the rest of it gambling money, meaning that I don’t care what happens to it, but once it’s gone, that’s it. If I came into $10M, I would set aside about half of that and do the same thing.
Yes, that’s a lot more comfort money if I made it really, really big, but that just means I would have a bigger stipend each year.

Cable “news” is all about ratings and profit from said ratings even more so from the Big Sleep (3 acronyms here). You can almost hear them saying “Truth never sold no used car” as they babble on. Main Stream my ass. Then there is the McLaughlin “Group” which is about as bizarre as you can get along with other assorted PR firms posing as legitimate news outlets. The slow death of print and the devolution of cable is concerning. I get my sources here, but there is a vast wasteland of “I only look at what I want to think” out there. Then there is AM radio. According to Fox Business:
The first debate, scheduled for a 6 p.m. ET start will be moderated by anchors Trish Regan and Sandra Smith. Four GOP candidates will be featured, including former HP (HPQ) CEO Carly Fiorina, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.
BUT… if Paul is boycotting this, that leaves just Fiorina, Huckabee, and Santorum.
If they go with only that trio, can they really fill all the time with just those three? Sure, Huckabee in particular can preach for an hour, but will Fox Business really do that?
For how long will the undercard be scheduled?
If it is 90 minutes, can you imagine how the answers will be repetitions after just 30 minutes?

The Trump schtick will be predictable - Jeb! will try to attack, Trump will just look at him and recite Jeb!’s position relatively to the central podium, with each debate showing Jeb! closer to the edge. It will be an easy bit for Trump and unfortunately for Jeb! the visual is very powerful.
But this is the RNC’s fault. They bought the idea that candidates should be on stage according to their popularity, rather than a random placement.
So its’ the RNC that made sure Trump would be front and center in the image.

Not saying he’s Canadian, but I’m surprised he’s not wintering in an Airstream at Panama City Beach.

Dear [my name here]
Thank you for applying for a position as [job description here] with Cybercoders. We are sorry but your skills and qualifications do not match the ideal candidate we are looking for. Good luck in your job search!
Well here’s the thing, I DID NOT APPLY FOR ANY JOB.
I think they tried to send me a recruitment spam and sent a rejection spam instead.

Trump has played the Republicans for all their arrogant foolishness allows.
Please proceed….

According to Fox Business:
BUT… if Paul is boycotting this, that leaves just Fiorina, Huckabee, and Santorum.
If they go with only that trio, can they really fill all the time with just those three? Sure, Huckabee in particular can preach for an hour, but will Fox Business really do that?
They’re STILL doing this undercard business?
WTF is with some progressives and RT?

Sole topic: Just how weak IS Obama?
At some point, even in fly-over country, people are going to get sick of sending their own kids into unnecessary wars. Iran released our people, done. But Republican’s want to go to war at all costs. Many in our armed forces come from fly-over land. Won’t they start to recognize this at some point?
Aaaaand another video of Chicago cops on the hunt is about to be released. This one just as bad as all the others. Black victim shot, lay dying, is turned over on his back, handcuffed, and the cop steps on him as if posing with a trophy.

haven’t these goons figured out that they are doing their job in the public eye? most of us are prepared to cut them some slack for working in a tough environment but I think we expect them to treat all citizens, even suspected criminals, as human beings.
For fans of Harry Potter and Alan Rickman this is brilliant. If you never saw the Harry Potter series, there are spoilers galore in here. Be warned. But what a moving 15 minute tribute to a marvelous actor.

My money is on Carly with Ben Carson as an outside possibility. Jeb and Rand are just too damned stubborn to give up this early.
I still think Jeb! is waiting for the rest to flame out.
Time will tell if this is a viable option.
She’s late again and, as usual, completely clueless.

The GOP debates should use a circular table, with the moderators on a slowly spinning lazy susan type contraption, with a NFL like spider camera sliding around above it all
Good grief.
The current GOP crop would’ve had us all vaped in WW3 had they been in power during the Cold War.

You need to shorten your screen name or at least put a space in it so it wraps. On cell screen all the buttons end up in a vertical line with the upding (+) in the middle. Took me four tries to give you a karma point, only succeeded after embiggening that part of the page.

In-freaking-credible:
Yet Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala threw out the case late Wednesday, saying in a 92-page opinion that federal prosecutors had tried and failed over the course of two trials last year to secure a conviction. While calling what happened a “tragedy,” she seemed to suggest Patel was responsible in part for the rough treatment he received, noting in her ruling that Patel committed a misdemeanor by leaving his home without identification, and noting the grandfather should have known some basic English because it was not his first visit to the United States.
