On March 8th, 2013, Snarky Puppy and a host of special guests convened at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA. The project was to record a series of live performances in audio and video that would bring attention and benefit to the ongoing work of the center. The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts organization that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High School and the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall. The hall brings world class music to the local community through the Music Lab, providing education and recording space for local children.

The Music Lab at Jefferson Center is working daily to pull from every social and economic class of the Roanoke community and create the next wave of real, human musicians. They host low cost or free after-school programs for any interested young people filled with visits by guest artists, private instrumental instruction, and recording training. Wafting out of the little studios and rehearsal rooms on the third floor of Jefferson Center, you can hear Afro-beat in Swahili, hip-hop in Liberian Kreyol, the blues coming from the guitar of a 13 year-old prodigy, and the undeniable sound of young musicians growing. It’s a thing that needs to be supported at all costs across this country, and by purchasing this record, you’ve done it.

A portion of every sale will go to the Music Lab at Jefferson Center.

President Obama gives British Prime Minister a Shinola watch:

WASHINGTON — Meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London on Friday, President Barack Obama brought along a gift with a distinctly Detroit edge: a Shinola watch.

According to the press pool report provided by the White House Friday afternoon, Obama gave Cameron “a custom Shinola men’s watch featuring the Seal of the President of the United States engraved on the back, presented in a wooden Shinola box customized with the presidential seal.”

The pool report was filed by Michael Shear of the New York Times, who is covering the president’s overseas trip. The White House was unable to immediately provide any additional information about the watch.

Shinola, which is based in Detroit, is an upscale maker of lifestyle goods including watches, bicycles, journals and leather goods. During his last visit to Detroit in January, Obama met with Shinola founder Tom Kartsotis and visited the Shinola store, where he bought a journal.

A quick run-through of Shinola’s online catalog didn’t produce any watches with a presidential seal, so the White House probably ordered them specifically, though neither the administration nor Shinola said so Friday. Calls and emails to the company also were not immediately returned to the Free Press.

Me neither, but I suspect GMO shinola tastes just awful. Not particularly because it’s GMO, but because it’s shinola.

Then again, I’ve never been able to tell it from shit.

Bacon and Brussels sprouts pasta with lemon. I add kalamata olives, double the spices (except for the lemon peel) and lemon juice, and reduce the amount of pasta to 6oz. It’s amazing and it’s dinner tonight.

That’s how I am with baseball. Soon as I turn on the game, pop, they lose horribly. If I don’t pay any attention to it, I wake up the next morning and they’ve got a pretty good win on the books.

I don’t know shit about Shinola.

What’s so great about this story is how Freepers are supporting David Cameron, who’s version of conservativism, offensive to progressive and basic human values as it is, they would consider to be pure socialism if attempted in the States.

There’s something about this story that makes me want to lay back in my beanbag chair and pass a joint to Terence Stamp. On second thought, that sounds like a lotta fun. Pass that puppy here, Terry old bean!

Tried real hard to not pay attention as the Blackhawks fought off elimination to win in double OT last night. It worked, so I’m thinking of not watching the next game to improve their chances.

At least that’s the story I’ll try on Mrs Cranky, who’s the real hockey fan. Alas, my Jedi mind tricks don’t work on her.

To be fair, they were a barely-making-the-playoffs team, and part of the reason they made it is because of the dumpster fire that was the Pacific division. So a first round exit isn’t all that unexpected.

But feel free to soften up Dallas. :)

This was supposed to be the Wild’s year. They got off to a great start, but they completely imploded, rallied late, and imploded again right at the end. Heh. And speak of the Wild, they gave up the tying goal within a minute of the opening of the 3rd period. Dubnyk got a fat contract based on a small sample size of uncharacteristically stellar play, and now the Wild are paying for it.

Wild back up 3-2 right after that.

re: #77 thedopefishlives

This was supposed to be the Wild’s year. They got off to a great start, but they completely imploded, rallied late, and imploded again right at the end. I’m mostly amused by it all, not having a real stake in the conversation, but how rabid some of these folks up here get after a hockey game… sheesh.

Yeah. I watched a little bit of the implosion.

The hockey up here …well, we missed the playoffs last year, and some of our big players are older, so the window is closing for them. But the moves that were made in the offseason have made me happy, even as the attendance wasn’t what it has been. (We used to be one of the hardest home teams to play against but …hahahaha, not this year. But we had one of the best road records in the league!)

But nothing’s really done until the Cup is in the Captain’s hands.

Apparently one doesn’t metabolize all the calories in alcohol. Caloric amounts are determined by burning stuff in a bomb calorimeter. Alcohol burns very well. Your body deals with it differently, and while it isn’t calorie-free, you can probably get away with a bit more than the official calorie count would indicate.

Maryland is one of five states voting in the presidential primaries Tuesday, but the Republican candidates may want to take a pass on courting the students at the University of Maryland, the largest college in the state.

“I feel like the election right now is a joke; there are not many good candidates left on the Republican side,” said Ariana Lulli, 19, a sophomore who is studying to be a teacher. “I don’t even know who I’m going to vote for.”

Kaitlynn Motley, 20, a sophomore physiology and neurobiology major, said the only thing she applauds in the Republican Party is the refusal among some to support any of the remaining candidates.

“It shows a lot of thought into the decision,” said Motley, who said she recently switched her party affiliation to Democrat from Republican for Tuesday’s Maryland primary.

America, 2016:

Ed board candidate says schools should be able to teach creationism

Nebraska Board of Education candidate Stephanie Bohlke-Schulte said she thinks schools should have the option of teaching a “balanced approach” to science that includes creationism as an alternative theory to evolution.

But she said she does not think it should become a part of the state science standards, rather it should be a curriculum decision by local districts, and that “balanced” doesn’t necessarily mean creationism should be given an equal amount of time as evolution.

The issue arose during a candidate interview with members of the Journal Star’s editorial board. In a subsequent interview, Bohlke-Schulte said creationism should not be taught as a belief but because there is some scientific foundation for it.

Coke has a fantastic mix of flavors going on. It seems simple because it’s a common food product, but it has a lot to it: citrus oils, nutmeg, some bitterness and sourness to balance out the sweet via phosphoric acid and dissolved CO2.

If you took the aromatics of cola and distilled or infused them in alcohol rather than a sweetened beverate, it would be a apertif like Amaro.

That’s why it’s such a great mixer.

I wonder how much longer these old brick and mortar retailers can stay in business, post Walmart and post Internet.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a Sears store - at least two years. Maybe even longer for a KMart.

Over the many years I’ve found Sears to be passably useful as a place to shop, but in my dotage not so much.

Primaries aren’t the GE. No one is disenfranchising not affiliated voters. The only voters who should pay attention are those who are affiliated. If you want to vote in the Democratic primary — be aware of the rules in your state. I did way back when. Are we supposed to coddle folks who are proud Indies who also have the interwebz and can research rules and the Brennan Center’s student guide for every state because they are too lazy to register in time?

I really find Berners laughable when they think the rules that are open to all don’t apply to them — it is suppression or fraud. You can be a free spirit and vote in the GE — you just don’t get to whine about not being allowed to vote in a primary where everyone else knows what the fuck is going on.

Lucky duck gets new lease on life with 3-D printer generated feet

Lumpy the goose struts back and forth, blocking the driveway of Autumn Farm Sanctuary here.

The goose with a missing toe and mangled wings greets visitors and begs for attention by gently biting their clothes at hip’s height. Nearby, a turkey named Monty vies for guests’ affection by spreading his feathers and puffing his chest.

But it’s tough for them to compete for attention with the newest addition to this ragtag barnyard crew — Phillip the duck.

Phillip waddles around his new stomping grounds of the Autumn Farm with 3-D-printed, prosthetic webbed feet. These bright orange plastic prototypes printed by an Oshkosh middle school teacher are not only quite the fowl fashion statement—they actually saved this lucky duck’s life.

9. Americans of color, in general, aren’t duped or deluded into thinking “we are the majority already.” That’s plainly obvious.

10. The idea that there is some super woke majority out there waiting to lay siege to the palace is an overwhelmingly white delusion.

11. This imaginary unicorn majority, in their heads, gives them permission to think “we’re not doing anything wrong, it’s the system…”

14. It is thus the perfect cocktail for the emergence of the “Bernie Bro,” who, again, is not a millennial but the aging white male activist

Or the White “Sovereign Citizen” on the Right, who believes no governmental entity has jurisdiction over their activities.

My home security company (big national chain) has been sending me weekly letters saying “OMG! YOU NEED TO UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM YESTERDAY! Can we interest you a shiny upgrade?” A couple weeks ago I called them to set up the update.

When I asked how much time I’d have to set aside for this, the phone person said either a whole morning or a whole afternoon. I asked if they had Saturdays. Yep. She was able to give me a Saturday appointment with a one-hour window. The service guy called me at 7:45 to let me know he was on his way and showed up at exactly 8:00. Done at 8:30.

My cat can relax now. Nice to have a happy tech support story.

Apparently the company isn’t switching over to the new system for a couple of years, but they have so many customers that they’re trying to scare us into acting NOW! Worked for me - I only ignored the warnings for about 3-4 months.

I’m not worried about them. Hillary supporters were the same way in 2008, and there was supposedly going to be a big Puma vote for McCain which didn’t materialize. The prospect of a President Trump or a President Cruz will pull all but a small minority together.

The Bernie-PUMAs weren’t going to vote anyway. Maybe if he got nominated they might have come out of nowhere—except they probably wouldn’t have registered in time.

What amuses me about them is they insist they’re the actual Democratic base yet they can’t even bother to register with the Democratic Party and they’re constantly threatening to either write in Bernie or vote for Stein. And they have the nerve to claim that Hillary is not a real Democrat and actually a Republican when they do that shit. And I’m not even touching the fact that their candidate of choice hasn’t even been a Democrat a year yet and can’t even commit to campaigning for other Democrats. I’m sorry but fuck that shit.

If there is a case study of sometimes things get too big to manage, Sears was the canary in the cave. Now you’re seeing the same thing happening with other conglomerates like GE spinning off lines of businesses they can’t/don’t want to manage.

They needed someone like Jeff Bezos to fit all the pieces together. Trouble is, an old company like Sears would be used to doing things A Certain Way, and wouldn’t have listened to some whippersnapper saying, “Hey, if we set up an online catalog on Prodigy, people could buy from Sears from home at lot faster than using the postal service.”

That would have been back in the dialup modem days, and the system would have been painfully slow, but they coulda been the first.

I’ve got a delivery from Amazon coming today. I made two orders within three days of each other and they held one order back so that they could ship it with the other. I appreciate the efficiencies (less packing material wast. I recycle it anyway), but it means that they took a full week before shipping the first order.

I don’t use streaming services or kindle so I don’t want to spend $100 just for the shipping perks. I usually don’t mind having to wait a couple extra days to receive an order, and 2/3 of my purchases are Marketplace anyway. Most of the Marketplace sellers try to get stuff to you ASAP so they get a good review. I always leave a positive review if they’re good, and 98% of the time they’re very good.

I think all these sales of Federal land from ~1865-1913, when selling off the undivided patrimony of the American people (i.e., pretty much everything west of the Appalachians) to the Robber Barons for pennies an acre was the Government’s only source of income should be rescinded anyway. Cute news from Bulgaria:

Muslims in a small village in Bulgaria have raised the funds and contributed the labour to restore a century-old Eastern Orthodox church.

The Muslims managed to put together £800 for the restoration, to save the Church of the Archangel Michael for the village’s Christian community who make up about one tenth of the 600 residents.

Kozlets is in the southern Bulgarian province of Haskovo, near the borders of Greece and Turkey.

The restoration of the bell tower cost about £800.

“It was possible that it would fall and bring down the roof with it. This very much worried the Christians in the village. So we decided to raise money,” village mayor Kadir Beynur told Haskovo.

Looks like the Hermit Kingdom is at it again…

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Saturday fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile from a submarine off its northeast coast, South Korean defense officials said, Pyongyang’s latest effort to expand its military might in the face of pressure by its neighbors and Washington.

The South Korean officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of office rules, could not immediately confirm where the projectile landed. The Saturday evening launch of what the officials said was presumably a submarine-launched ballistic missile took place near the North Korean coastal town of Sinpo, where analysts have previously detected efforts by the North to develop submarine-launched ballistic missile systems.

A successful test from a submarine would be a worrying development because mastering the ability to fire missiles from submerged vessels would make it harder for outsiders to detect what North Korea is doing before it launches, giving it the potential to surprise its enemies.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the projectile fired by the North on Saturday traveled about 30 kilometers (19 miles). It said a typical submarine-launched ballistic missile can travel at least 300 kilometers (186 miles).

Another dud from the dude.

All this fearmongering about North Korea gets me angry. They’ve had four unsuccessful nuclear tests, using up at least half of the plutonium their 50 MW reactor could possibly have produced in the time it was running, and even if they thought some <1/3 nominal yield firecracker was a war-winning* weapon, it would undoubtedly be too heavy for any of their (also unsuccessful) missiles to deliver. It’s just pandering to the people in this country who are afraid of their own shadows.

*A war against the whole world once they start it, remember…

It’s not a war with the whole world, just against the US and South Korea. No one else is going to show up.

In which my second favorite Minneapolis musician talks bout my favorite Minneapolis musician…

Paul Westerberg Remembers Prince: ‘I Can’t Think of Anyone Better’

Full of great little anecdotes, but this one is the best:

My first recollection of seeing him was a dress rehearsal for one of his early tours. I was next to another musician, a couple other guys that were up-and-comers and that thought they were hot shit, and we were watching Prince. The guy turned to me and said, “I’m fucking embarrassed to be alive.” And that’s how I felt. He was so good. It was like, “What are we doing? This guy is, like, on a different planet than we are.” It was showmanship, it was rock & roll, it was fun, it was great. I think it helped everyone around. It made us all think that Minneapolis wasn’t the dour town that we tried to pretend it was. He was like a ray of light in a very cautious place. He was a star. He made no bones about it. He was glitz to a place that wasn’t used to it. I remember a little scuffle broke out in front of the stage one night and Prince said, “Stop fighting, you’ll mess up your clothes.”

That. That right there is so perfect.

There is a good chance this will also be Capaldi’s last season as well.

We haven’t had a Doctor last more than 3 seasons since 4th, who left in 1981. Capaldi has also suffered the same serious injuries Matt Smith did on the show, and Capaldi is no spring chicken.

For the next Doctor, I like Hayley Atwell for the 13th Doctor.

Injury in question.

It should be noted that Smith suffered it worse. They had to cut a scene from the end of The Name of the Doctor, showing how he and Clara left his time stream.

And in his finale, The Time of the Doctor, they had to write in a crippling leg injury for his time on Trenzalore, with a short novella saying the 11th lost part of his leg.

She hid under the sofa ALL DAY yesterday. Like from 7 am till 9 pm. I went outside for a bit, came back & found out she used the box & ate some kibble. OK. She’s alive.

Went to bed & like 10 minutes later she’s cozying up in the crook of my arm. Sweet little baby.

This morning she’s scared as shit of me, but hung out a little longer than yesterday. I tossed her a few tweets. Noticed that her toys are scattered, so she did some playing last night while I was asleep.

Slowly but surely.

That’s how it works. As she gets comfortable with the environment she will probably get more interactive.

Just spent some time following links from an SPLC article referenced in one of Thanos’ pages earlier this week. I crawled around in the sewers for as long as I could stand it, and here’s what I found (this is the is the first in a series of five articles):

Then there’s this (good for mining handles to block):

Also this, written for an Irish paper:
Opinion: Following the money - Irish slave owners in the time of abolition

And finally, some Twitter accounts you might want to preemptively block:

GUWEqMxY5v7Ecje/H6KH204AfzaxtTV5+PkJUVreqF7TLW6y6/FzdBaxnJrLfGLv9AxLq3X+cqyzEKH6dQoE1cfNUlOMmHkwbu2x22CZKjQWoSu7w4OHirea4EOh7+r6kYKiQ93oO5mCos3fVxZB7Sj8tJ3yGYyJ

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go find something to kill the stench left by the knuckle-draggers. Despite the toxicity, I’d rather block them in advance than be having a nice day or interesting conversation and have them pop into my timeline to ruin it, y’know? Ugh.

What I hate about it as an American of Irish descent is that the suffering that many Irish experienced is used to tell African-Americans that they should shut up. When my third great grandfather brought his family here from Mayo about 160 years ago, he had free will of mobility. I’m sure he took some crap for having an Irish accent, in fact I’m certain of it but the experience of slavery for African-Americans in the New World was much worse than his. It’s pathetic that some people of Irish descent have to use their ancestors suffering to tell people to shut up.

Right. The Smiths of the South Side in Pittsburgh were solidly Middle Class going back to the early 19th Century, and 3 successive generations of my male ancestors married Irish women. Their children were not considered ‘nonwhite’, because of their Irish parentage. Immigrant Irish may have been looked down on, abused, consigned to shitty, dangerous jobs, but they weren’t stuck there for generation upon generation.

And perhaps some Irish even came to America as Indentured Servants, but the LAW going back to the 17th Century established that only blacks were subject to HERITABLE slavery.

My Irish born third great grandfather actually became a pretty respected man in 19th century North side Pittsburgh. He and his son ended up being named as postmasters of the township where they lived in the Buchanan and Cleveland administrations. I mean it’s just crap to compare the two situations. I have no doubt at all that it wasn’t always easy for them as Irish Catholics in a country predominately Protestant of British and German descent but it wasn’t even close to what African-Americans have experienced.
