Anti-Muslim Extremist to Be Keynote Speaker at Central New York Police Expo

Wingnuts • Views: 55,590

VERONA, N.Y. — Tactical law enforcement officers from across the region will gather at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino next week to view the latest law enforcement equipment and receive training, but the expo’s keynote speaker has drawn criticism from groups advocating against Islamophobia and bigotry.

The keynote speaker at the New York Tactical Officers Association annual expo next week is Ryan Mauro, a senior policy analyst at the Clarion Project, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank aimed at “exposing the dangers of Islamist extremism”.

The Council of American-Islamic Relations issued a news release Thursday asking that the New York Police Department and other agencies “investigate” whether their officers are attending Mauro’s address, calling him a “notorious anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist” and an “Islamophobe”. The council is a Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled him an “extremist” and “anti-Muslim” for his comments following the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris and his work at the Clarion Project. The law center specializes in civil rights and public interest law.

Mauro also has warned viewers on Fox News of so-called “no-go” zones in Europe that he claims were established by radical Islamists imposing Sharia Law. He has said such enclaves exist in New York State. […]

Here are a few screenshots of Mauro’s other articles for Clarion the sorts of people & organizations Mauro is involved in (if you want to read any of them, you’ll have to google them because I’m not going to give them traffic). There are plenty more if you have the stomach to poke around the Clarion site:

Ditto for his website where he proudly posts his appearances on Fox News with the likes of Bill O’Reilly, Lou Dobbs, Sean Hannity, and others who assist in the fear mongering & spread of rank bigotry.

In the “Also See” section below you’ll find mention of Mauro’s activities in league with some of the worst elements of the Islamophobia industry.

Outreach! Hearts and Minds.
//

A speech at an EXPO like that is training or policy shaping. Literally setting the tone for law enforcement. If we are to ever move forward to reduce this kind of bigotry this kind of speaker has to be a non starter. It’s the opposite of what we should have.
We have to train our guys with the truth. Reality. Not with scared over armed white guy fever / wet dreams.

Universal lifetime rule: any non-academic phrase involving the word “tactical” should likely have applied a 90% dumbfuck rejection factor.

I have yet to encounter a counterexample to this rule.

There are “no-go” zones all over America, wastelands created by lack of regulation and offshoring by corporations for the benefit of shareholders and executives. So vote Republican!

Gotta get the police on your side, you will have to use them as your protectors like you did in the Civil Rights era.

These no-go zones …those are like sundown towns for African Americans, right? Or North Carolina and places in Alabama for trans-folks? Or airports if you need to speak Arabic at any point during the trip?

Oh, you mean not like that?

This is a really bad person, a truly evil bigot, invited to be the keynote speaker at a police organization. This is insane.

As best I can determine, having had literally dozens of business trips to Minneapolis, “no-go zones” are places where the local chess aficionados will be exorbitantly offended if you ask them if they want to play ‘go’.

Save me from the Bernie Bros. One of my friends posted this on Facebook.

A few words on yesterday’s primaries:

Nobody working for Bernie Sanders started working for him because they thought he would probably win. So it seems silly to stop now that you worry he probably won’t.

This struggle for social justice is a generations-long, centuries-long Manichean struggle between good and evil; it is bigger than one person or one campaign. The reason we respect Sanders is because his life exemplifies that truth.

Keep the faith people. Only God can see all ends. And thanks to my one-time home state of Rhode Island. You’ve done us proud.

Just to put a point on it, someone replied:

I am glad someone finally described the dichotomy between Sanders and Clinton as Manichean.

The dichotomy between Democrats and Republicans can fairly be regarded as Manichean. Applying this concept to Sanders vs. Clinton is very much less reasonable.

This anti-Muslim shit is especially perplexing. I see thousands upon thousands of Muslim congregations across the United States - teaching tolerance, completely assimilated into their communities, advocate for the arts, their youth participating in sports with utmost zeal - I’ve seen these things with my own eyes. You’d be surprised how many rippin’ Muslim snowboarders there are in places like Breckenridge and Winter Park.

I don’t care whether or not someone else throws their vote away because that by itself doesn’t affect me.

What I do care about is that in the context of Trump as the GOP nominee (or Cruz for that matter), 1/2 vote for Trump or Cruz is completely indefensible from someone who supposedly opposes Republicans.

There is no excuse for this kind of purity nonsense on the left side of things. The differences between Clinton and Sanders are completely insignificant compared to the difference between either of them and any Republican, as Sanders himself said early in this campaign.

A pretty good “tell” for Mr. Mauro’s line of bovine excrement is his (at the time, anyway) obsession with trying to paint “Islamville” (actually a real place named “Islamberg, NY”) as some sort of hideous terrorist outpost of Daesh, USA when even the most cursory research would show that it is a remote hamlet of about 300 people out in East Ass, NY (i.e., “Upstate”); that they are mainly Muslim African-Americans from NYC who moved there to get a way from violence in the City; that their imam is a Sufi, and that neither they nor any of their neighbors (those few who live around there) have the least problems with each other. Except, of course, for the occasional drivel posted by online Muslim-bashers absolutely convinced that Islamberg is some sort of American Fallujah.

Jury convicts ex-Oklahoma reserve deputy in shooting of restrained suspect
latimes.com

The shooting — which was caught on video — sparked several investigations that, among other things, revealed an internal 2009 memo questioning Bates’ qualifications as a volunteer deputy and showed that Bates, a close friend of the sheriff’s, had donated thousands of dollars in cash, vehicles and equipment to the agency.

Bates faces up to four years in prison.

Bates’ defense attorneys argued at trial that methamphetamine found in Harris’ system, along with his cardiac health, caused his death. Defense attorneys called the killing an “excusable homicide.”

But prosecutors told jurors that Bates was guilty of culpable negligence when he shot Harris. One deputy testified that Bates apparently dozed off minutes before Harris fled from deputies.

However, the Indy label where I’m at seems to indicate far left or far right, and I think I may be ready to join a mainstream party. Colorado’s Indy bloc is its biggest bloc. I’m probably going to try and help coalesce that bloc closer to the Democratic Party, if only because the goddamn Republican Party represents horrendous shit across the board.

Who knows though. Indy’s get labeled as lazy, and I’ll admit to being a lazy Indy in the recent year, especially with this last caucus (where Bernie won).

I’m so confused.
It seems like only yesterday that Obama was weak and America had lost it’s standing on the world stage for not sending combat troops to the Ukraine, to directly confront the Russians and their surrogates

First it was “We need to send more weapons to Ukraine!”

Then it was “Weapons won’t be enough, we need to station troops on the Ukraine border!”

And finally we heard “US troops won’t be enough, we need all of NATO on that border, ready to go to war with Russia!”

Just like every other foreign crisis that has happened in the last 8 years, whatever the President did, it was never enough…from the crowd who simultaneously insists that any intervention is wrong.

That’s absolute horseshit and they know it. They will be right there with the wingnuts, totally convinced that the only way she avoided indictment was due to some shadowy conspiracy to hide the “truth.” Just as they will spin even something like a misdemeanor that results in a wrist-slap like a fine into being tantamount to selling state secrets to our enemies.

So it’s Uber vs City of Houston. The city is telling Uber drivers that they have to pass fingerprint background checks just like all other taxi and limo drivers. They gotta play by the same rules. Uber is saying fuck that, we’ll pull out of the city if we have to follow those rules.

I’ve never used Uber so I don’t have any gravy on those taters but my feeling is that the city is right and there should be equitable observance of rules and regs.

re: #108 allegro

This is one of the dodges that Uber loves to throw out whenever they run into problems-they claim they’re not a taxi service, they’re an ‘app’. From a technical and legal standpoint, that’s true-all of the people who serve you are independent contractors, not employees. And that dodge has usually been successful….

Except when it doesn’t.

After all, I can’t download a car. But my local taxi service can deploy an app and I can use it, just like any old Uber customer can-except that in this case, I’m actually paying an honest-to-god employee of the taxi service, whereas Uber is just acting as a proxy.

Uber’s business model is 100% dependent on the app. No app-no business. It’s as simple as that. How such an app is worth some $40 billion in valuation is amazing in its own way, especially since by its own admission it controls a monopolistic rent of this kind of matching riders to drivers-yet the drivers can’t negotiate with Uber to set the rates they would be willing to charge-can you say price fixing?

Come on, didn’t you read the Goodman article? That’s all a fabrication of the DNC and Hillary supporters. It’s totally a criminal investigation, she’s facing a very real possibility of criminal indictment, and when it happens she’ll be toast. And Goodman made sure to fellate the FBI in the noisiest, sloppiest fashion possible in the hopes that they’ll grant his wish and hand down a recommendation to indict her before June so Bernie can save the DNC from itself.

But he made sure to throw in that he’s just interested in clearing all this up before November just so he can insist that he’s not really hoping for her indictment, he’s just wanting this all taken care of soon. *wink wink, nudge nudge*

And speaking of the fellating bit, you notice that both Bernie Bros and wingnuts are settling on the same argument: The FBI has to indict her in order to maintain its integrity/respectability. That a failure to recommend her indictment will totally destroy such because it will somehow mean that they’ve given into some nebulous force and done anything other than their duty to put her behind bars. This isn’t about justice or about security or any other word they throw about, it’s about a belief that the FBI is obligated to them to fulfill their fantasy to destroy her campaign and anything less is somehow a betrayal of them.

Uber has no leverage here as they contract out the service to their independent contractors. Now if Lyft acceded to the city’s demands then that puts a squeeze on Uber to put the squeeze on their IC’s-which would further reinforce a current lawsuit that Uber is acting in a monopolistic fashion (which is the last thing they want….)

The same thing is going on in Austin right now and there’s an election scheduled to decide whether the city can force Uber and Lyft to perform background checks on their drivers.

My personal opinion, and this is based on commercial experience with one of these disruptor companies, is that disruptors like Uber, Lyft and AirBnb are quite happy to take advantage of anyone, including other businesses, in their quest for cash.

The Global Threat of Islamic Extremism (ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Iran) & The Threat of Islamic Extremism in America/New York State

Professor Ryan Mauro is the National Security Analyst for the Clarion Project, a nonprofit organization that educates the public about the threat of Islamic extremism and provides a platform for voices of moderation and tolerance within the Muslim community.

Ryan has made over 1,000 appearances on radio and TV programs from both the left of the right, including frequent segments on FOX News Channel. He’s been widely published and quoted in outlets like the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, The Hill, Roll Call, the Daily Caller, FrontPage Magazine, PJ Media and the peer-reviewed journal, Middle East Quarterly.  Ryan will present two blocks at the conference, the first will discuss the The Global Threat of Islamic Extremism (ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Iran) and the second will bring this threat closed to home, discussing the Threat of Islamic Extremism in America and in New York State. See some of Ryan’s latest interviews and promo reel.

According to their PDF for attendees (warning lots of “tactical” gun-humper & wingnut imagery & wording), the course above will be first thing tomorrow morning.

I’m all in favor of the city requiring some basic qualifications/background check for Uber drivers or any other service. It’s the responsibility of government to ensure some measure of safety by those who do business.
The last time I used Uber my daughter and I got a driver who was a bit overmatched. It should have been an easy drive (to 3rd and Christian in South Philadelphia-go down to Christian, make a right, go to third street- what could go wrong?). Anyway short story long my daughter and I jumped out of his car 6 blocks away from our destination when the driver kept turning further away to somehow avoid traffic or something. Well, the driver chased after us and got out of his car and ran up to me and chest bumped me and challenged me to a fight. I just laughed in his face, but my daughter had already called the police. I get the impression that Uber doesn’t really vet its drivers, so if they won’t do it, somebody has to.

I nearly got tossed out of physical therapy this afternoon. Heh. I was sent to loosen up on a reclining bike, and there was a guy next to me on a reclining stepper, and he wanted to know why I was there, and wanted to tell me all about why he was there. No problem. But DT came on the tv machine, excerpts from his foreign policy speech. And the guy set in on a rant about it was about time Trump got serious, and this was good stuff! I said it sounded just like what he’d been talking about all primary season. “I’m strong, Obama’s weak. I’ll fix everything immediately.” I said it’s the same stuff, he just paid someone to put it into complete sentences and project it on a teleprompter.

That set him off, about how “the people” had been waiting to hear this, and my adrenaline surged, and I started peddling faster and faster…. Told him I existed, too, and I couldn’t stand DT, or anything he stood for, and the bike went faster and faster…. I told the guy it was a good thing they didn’t allow guns, and the therapists came running, changed channels, got the guy to something else, and came over and tried to get me to slow down. Nope, faster and faster! So my therapist pulled me into a private room, and asked me not to threaten other patients with gunfire. Heh. She laughed as she said it, and said she and her husband had an acquaintance over, and he started on a similar rant. She picked up some stuff on their second floor deck and tossed it over the rail, and her husband took the hint and removed the guy before she tossed him over.

The bike was smoking.

I’ve been reading about how Trump’s delivery using a TelePrompter went, and boy, he had a hard time delivering a cohesive speech. Most foreign policy experts are saying he doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about, and I agree. One of the most common points they shared were the contradictions in his speech. Trump’s speech wasn’t meant for foreign policy experts but for guys like the one you encountered at PT today—-know-nothings who think that if someone uses certain words, s/he knows what s/he is talking about. “America First” will be the new right-wing buzzword when it comes to foreign policy. Lindsey Graham attacked Trump’s speech on Twitter, asking whether the TelePrompter guy wrote it. It may not have been obvious to most who heard the speech that Trump doesn’t know jack about foreign policy, but it was obvious to me because I’ve studied in the field.

Sadly they do represent what America used to be. A White Anglo-Saxon Protestant America where everyone else knew their place, not only minorities, but liberals. If liberals got too uppity they’d be branded Communists and could never find a well paying job ever again. Or they’d be killed by Hoover’s FBI or an angry racist group like the KKK with local police helping out.

Jews were heavily oppressed too and harassed and women had no rights they couldn’t leave abusive husbands.

This is the America of the past, before the Civil Rights era. And powerless and angry white conservatives wish they could go back to this time, where they were superior to everyone else and could spit on you to feel better about their pathetic lives even if they were dirt poor.
