A Special Video Clip: Carly Fiorina Makes Up Songs and Sings Them

Vice presidential qualifications

At today’s special Ted Cruz event where he announced Carly Fiorina as his pick for vice president (a pretty pointless choice since he’s not going to be the GOP nominee), Cruz shared an endearing anecdote about Fiorina:

Carly Fiorina then proceeded to demonstrate that she sings about as well as she CEOs.

UPDATE at 4/27/16 2:58:53 pm by Charles Johnson

LGF contributor Vicious Babushka points out that Fiorina didn’t actually make up the music to her little song — it’s from an Irving Berlin song first published in 1950. Here’s Perry Como’s version:

She did not make up the music to that song, here is the original, it’s quite ancient==>

Senator Bernie Sanders is planning to lay off “hundreds” of campaign staffers across the country and focus much of his remaining effort on winning California, he said in an interview Wednesday.

Other than to stop Hillary from being able to campaign against just the Republicans, and to waste money that could have gone to down-ticket races, what is he even trying to achieve?

You don’t just immediately terminate a campaign. That way lies intense anguish and rending of garments among supporters. This is simply how things are done.

This is Berniebro methadone. It’s clear he’s done, and he’s not really trying to hide it. Expect complete change in his tone and messaging.

Good for her acknowledging that the problem with her regretting ever supporting Sanders is not with him but with his obstructionist supporters whom she labels as being “worst than Republicans.” I believe Sanders could have influenced their behavior but decided not to because he loves their undying adoration of him. He could have informed them to check whether they could have voted for him by taking time to review their state’s laws/rules in regard to voting in Democratic primaries/caucuses, but he didn’t. Instead, he went the “these Democratic primaries/caucus rules are so unfair” route, which did nothing to help them be able to cast votes on his behalf. SMDH.

Lay off staff and make your last stand in CA where you’re down 7 in polls, but need to now win by 20+?

He can’t just eke out a win in CA. He’d need a blowout loss, and that’s not happening. Shedding campaign workers in the next few states wont help him, since that’s a ripple effect of losses compounding on losses.

It’s pointless to argue thought. They think they can do something. Even though there’s no chance he could overtake Hillary in delegate count. Or get to 2,383.

Point 4 of the GOP autopsy

4. Epistemic Closure Is Real

There’s been a long running debate on the intellectual right about whether the GOP suffers from “epistemic closure,” a condition in which conservatives block out all dissenting voices until eventually their own arguments sound nonsensical to anyone who doesn’t already agree with them. The RNC report concludes this is a real and growing problem.

As others have said…he was drunk on the fact people actually followed him and made him bigger than he really is.

I hope he is sleeping it off and coming to his senses. The Democratic party needs him to do some repair work and to tell Trump to fuck off with his taking to Bernie’s own words.

There is still space for him in the party if he gets it together.

From the sounds of Twitter, there’s the sense that the DNC is working behind the scenes to let Bernie retire from the race with the same dignity that Hillary did in ‘08. Get him to wind things down slowly with a more conciliatory tone, while the DNC agrees to include some of his campaign planks in the party’s platform. Bernie gets a symbolic “victory,” the rift begins to heal, and the focus goes back to the insanity of the GOP field.

Don’t see why. Wasn’t an active threat to the schools.

The schools were on a “soft lock-in or lockout,” no one could go in and out of the schools, but classes proceed as usual.

Since the perceived threat was external to the school(s), it makes sense to keep the kids indoors (and learning) until the threat was removed.

Epistemic closure in the US right is a done deal. Their debate performances against Democrats tend to end up being Gish gallops (e.g., Romney’s 1st debate vs. Obama), where lies are spewed at a rate that makes debunking them in the allotted time impossible.

The Gish gallop is named after young earth creationist Duane Gish. This adoption by the US right and the GOP of creationists’ argument style is not a coincidence. Creationists are experts at pretending that total bullshit is plausible, and this is the single most valuable skill for a GOPer to have.

The attitude of some Bernie supporters on Twitter has been a huge turn off.

Seeing people who I used to respect hit the “favorite” button on that behavior has made me sad.

I think that in general, a lot of the criticism directed towards Sanders’ campaign here has been grounded in reality and factual. Things like the lack of support downticket, missing policy details, his inability to reach out to the full coalition of Democratic voters, and the tone of some of his supporters. I’m sure that to those who favor Sanders, it might feel a bit differently. That’s fair. (I can only state what I’ve seen, taking into account my own biases.) At the same time, I feel that, as long as it is based in reality and not hyperbolic, people have listened to and responded to criticism of HRC’s campaign.

I guess I’m really looking forward to this whole election being done.

I lived in California during the 1990s. I remember guys like Michael Huffington and Al Checchi trying to buy a Senate seat and the Governor’s mansion, respectively, with tens of millions of dollars in TV advertising and failing miserably. There are more recent examples at hand in Darrell Issa, Meg Whitman and soi-disant VP candidate Carly Fiorina. This isn’t just evidence of a lack of purpose; it’s evidence of a lack of knowledge of how campaigns work in various states, and with $200 million+ at his disposal this campaign season, Sanders should have had someone on his staff who knew this.

Hillary is now about 230 delegates short of the nomination, according to whoever’s delegate counter you follow. After Indiana, she should be close enough for the remaining superdelegates to endorse her and close the primaries out, and that’s really what needs to happen.

I think the NYDN is retaining Shaun King only because the Sanders campaign hasn’t quit yet. They don’t want to have the raving masses accuse them of being in the tank for Hillary…

Well, given the limited info in the report, local LE didn’t think it was much of a threat and probably passed same assessment on to the school district. If they had felt it was a much higher threat, I am sure they would have ordered an evacuation.

Since we’re sort of talking about Cuba (Havana Ted), here’s some Cuba news.

A group of students from Anacostia High School in SE DC will visit Cuba this summer. It’s an inner city school and the trip is being sponsored by a new organization called FLYTE. It’s the brainchild of “Nomadic Matt” (Matt Kepnes ), a travel blogger and book author.

It seems a worthy cause. If anyone wants to donate, here is their Crowdrise page. They have about $4,500 toward a $35,000 goal so far. crowdrise.com

Yankee Diva’s tweet shows me that she probably doesn’t have much contact with black persons. If she did, she’d realize that most of us don’t vote for politicians on the basis of race but on the basis of whether their vision for the nation more closely matches our own than that of his/her opponent. This is the point many Americans on the right, from the top down, keep getting wrong when they conclude, without evidence, that our votes are race-based. Why would they need a “minority outreach” program if they had planks in their platform that appealed to us? They wouldn’t. The “minority outreach” program is a means to attempt to fool us into voting for them when they’re offering nothing but Jim Crow dressed in a new suit, to us and others in the country they consider “undesirables.” How would they explain my votes for Carter and Clinton for POTUS, neither of whom is anywhere near being a POC? I really would like to hear their attempt to explain my votes to me. How would they explain to me why I did not vote for Sharpton and/or Jackson? If Carson had won the GOP/TP nomination this year and had run Condi Rice as his VP, he would have still had a huge problem getting most blacks to vote for him because of the policies he/they support(s.) I’m completely fed up with the right-wing using simple answers to explain very complex issues.

The right has convinced themselves that minorities only vote for Democrats because they get promised free stuff and are hooked on welfare programs that keep them in modern slavery. Not that the Democratic party wants them to have social safety nets and the freedom and ability to succeed in the face of obstacles most other people do not face. This way the conservatives think their beliefs are not at fault, it’s just the evil left and their sly tactics.

SPLC’s fundraiser tells us our subscription has expired a couple of times a year. Still, they’re critical to survival around here.

Salon seems to have changed its stylebook. It’s allowing much more ranting and applying less and less standards on what claims can be made.

I suspect it’s not even a partisan move, it’s just a business one. Strong emotions drive traffic better than dry reading that’s solidly-founded.

I had to unfollow them. They’re…uninteresting these days.

Still a lot of hand wringing on the “establishment” side of the Republican fun house in re: The Donald™, at least what I’m seeing with my Twitter.

It’s kabuki theater. Even Jonah “doughy pantload” Goldberg will fall in line this fall.

It might go further than that, into denial that ‘identity’ exists at all. Certainly for the so-cons it is clear that for them there is ‘normal’ (people just like them) and ‘abnormal’ (everything else).

My ex-FIL’s defined himself by who he wasn’t. He hated everyone unlike him. Heard him say “At least I’m not one of these [select expletive and group]” many times.

It grew progressively worse after he retired. I often wondered if a factor was a loss of identity after retiring. Like many folks, his career and profession defined who he was. In his case, much more strongly than being a husband, father, hobbyist. So who was the person that wasn’t really any of those without a defining job? Well, at least he wasn’t one of those …

He was the kind of asshole that would complain about identify politics while never voting for anyone unlike himself.

Right but “progressives” will feel better at defeating someone who had the nerve to support a lifelong Democrat over a Johnny come lately.

I was discussing Third Parties with my brother (the obnoxious one), who accused me of ‘Still buying into the Diad’, because he likes turns of phrase in place of actual argument.

He said Progressives had to stop voting for Democrats out of fear of Republicans. I pointed out that the Tea Party is an excellent counterexample. The Right always votes, and they always vote for the Republican candidate. So the Tea Party made sure that as many Republican candidates as possible were THEIR candidates, by primarying anyone they found insufficiently stupid and crazy. They managed to take over the GOP and purge anyone who isn’t either stupid and crazy, or willing to pretend they’re stupid and crazy. They put up slates of candidates for as many races as they could manage, and a fair number of them got nominated, and a number of those got elected, because come what may, the Right Always Votes, And Always For The Republican.

But, I said, I didn’t think Progressives are willing to work that hard. They want the Democrats to give them the candidates they want, and they don’t even want to fucking REGISTER as Democrats.

You know what this last-minute, desperate cry for attention from Cruz reminds me of? Reagan’s Hail Mary announcement in 1976 that he’d name Richard Schweiker as his running mate.

Schweiker was about as far from Reagan as you could get in the GOP and still be IN the GOP. He was the sort of Republican that those who idolize Reagan spent the last 40 years purging from the party.

There’s more.

Philippine presidential frontrunner Rodrigo Duterte has joked about his penis and vowed to pardon himself for mass murder, as he took his profanity-laced campaign to the nation’s business elite.

Mr Duterte also hit out again at key Philippine allies the United States and Australia, after warning last week he would be prepared to sever diplomatic ties because their ambassadors spoke out against a joke he made about raping a missionary who was later murdered.

Mr Duterte has shocked the political establishment in recent weeks, surging to a clear lead in opinion surveys before the May 9 election with a campaign full of swear words and promises to end crime by killing tens of thousands of criminals.

Trump is going to have to really up his game to keep up with this psycho.

Yup. Dr. Matt shared that yesterday. Something about soliciting people with information about famous people plagiarizing stuff, with a “bounty” offered.

I mentioned to CL that I may have been wrong about his sudden (all too brief)departure from Facebook. I had assumed his video rant was in response to a Facebook person telling him to clean up his act, or else perma-ban. Now I wonder if he and HAW had a tiff about how much time he spends on FB, and the internet in general. Remember he was in his echo-ey home office when he made his anti-FB rant.
