re: #663 Charles Johnson
I still think it comes down to the massive built-in negatives for Hillary.
Once a voter believes something long enough, they are unlikely to change later in life.
Plus, the real problem for the Dems may come down to the lack of turnout of young people. While supposedly overwhelmingly favoring Clinton, I wonder how many could be bothered to vote?
To reiterate from the last thread:
Looking at the electoral map, far too many states let hate, fear, and bigotry win. Yeah, Trump voters, that’s what you wrought & support.

From last thread:
So, if the Detroit Free-Press is calling MI for Clinton, why isn’t anyone else?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH
— endless screaming (@infinite_scream) November 9, 2016
Gotta be honest, I’m really starting to hate this country now.
Yup. We’ve learned there are a lot of white people in this country who will not see the forest for the trees and feel “left behind” or they’re just proud racists.
This election shouldn’t be this close. A plurality of Americans have hate in their heart or are too dumb to realize how dangerous Trump is.

Gutted. Speechless. Shattered.
I feared the worst a couple of weeks back.
Iowa’s back in Hillary’s column, according to the NY Times. One down, two to go (the two being PA and MI).
I think I am going to get a ballot initiative started for California to build a big beautiful wall around the state.

Yeah, what about all those “massive early-voting turnout” stories the news was full of in the last week? All those Latinos and women?
Not “massive” enough, I guess..
I wonder how Romney would have fared four years ago if he was up against Clinton instead of Obama?

We’ve got the Cascades—just a few passes to block up. Eastern Washington can join Idaho.
I think people got their hopes up too high based on early voting.
Early voting did not mean more Democrats were voting as much as just time-shifting.

Probably true, but I honestly think Bernie’s supporters would have seen a victory by him as justification to expropriate my parents’ home from us.
So we needed Biden in the primary, or all our options were going to be bad, from August 2015.
But I will admit Hillary was the least-bad.
And that Bernie would have been much more electable in the general.

re: #24 Scottishdragon
The GOP will keep the senate.
A possibility. Pre-election polling indicated a 50-50 split, still the most likely outcome.
Hillary would have to have very long coattails to make a big difference in the Senate, and she may have ended up with no coat tails at all.

People assumed the early voting was all going to Hillary.
No news on Nevada that i’ve seen which is where *a lot* of early voting happened.

There was strong early voting in NC but that doesn’t seem to have done much - or it was outweighed by on the day turn out

re: #1 freetoken
I think this community (and a lot of similar left leaning ones) discounted the hatred for Clinton and also forgot that she could pull defeat from the jaws of victory like no one else. I didn’t matter whether the hatred was fair or not. It was there all along, and whenever Democrats count on turnout to save their asses, they always get burnt.
Even if Clinton manages to pull this out, it feels like one thing has been made eminently clear:
This country is still a mess of racism, misogyny, and xenophobia, and the comfort far too many have in tolerating said phenomenon, if not being gleefully entrenched in them.
re: #33 Chrysicat
The problem, IMO, and it may still remain even though DWS is gone, is that the DNC is out of touch with too many people.
The DNC is not the total evil that the Bernie-Bros make them out to be, but on the other hand they clearly did not encourage a new Dem candidate (without the Clinton baggage) to step up to the plate.

You always trust the people closest to the ground. Old style election vote counting at the end of the night had you driving from precinct to precinct to look at the vote totals posted by the election judges.
Modern polling machines and mail-in voting make that harder, so you should trust the people closest on the ground.
re: #47 SteveMcGaziBolaGate RN
How many times has she lost?
How are people that voted for Trump going to feel if they wake up in a day and find a large portion of the stock market falling and maybe taking some of their money with them?
Hello! Smell the coffee.
You can be a scared white person in America, but there is a whole world out there and right now they are not real impression with your fee fees!
And so, not only will you lose money, those jobs you were fearful that were leaving may pick up pace and never be replace by the international companies that are coming here for the time being. And trade? Trump isn’t going to be getting that back if the world thinks we are withdrawing.

With what? Republicans will control the Senate, House and Presidency? You think the Republican Senate is going to keep the filibuster?
re: #68 No Depression
In their ‘defense’, most of the third-party voters this time around were probably too young to drive, let alone vote, when Nader stole two elections for Dubya.
The problem is, that means that if we don’t have a Chinese-modeled constitution forced on us after losing WWIII, those of us young enough to be around for 2032 will see a third party win for the candidate least in agreement to the third party’s values then, too.
re: #80 weave
Well if Trump wins this, let’s hope the Democrats return the favor of the past 8 years and work tirelessly to obstruct everything Republicans try to accomplish.
If Trump wins this, then with a Republican Congress, the first thing that goes away on Day One is the filibuster. McConnell won’t waste time calling a vote to dismantle it, because the GOP will know that the clock starts counting to the midterms.

My new concern is — whoever wins — how we move the country forward.
Trump has done too well, and that means there are a lot more deplorables in this country than I expected. I’m sure the first thing needs to be keeping people safe somehow. The militias will be spending the next few weeks shooting a goddamn lot of people who aren’t straight white Christian males, and I’m damned if I’ve got any clue what can be done to keep them safe.
After that: Then what? I don’t have a job and not much money for charity, but it’s a damn sure thing that whenever I can contribute again, I’m not giving a dime to anyone unless they’re supporting progressive causes. But beyond that, I have not a clue.
What do y’all think is the way forward?

Anyone still think Silver was way off and Wang had the election nailed?
Florida polled as a toss-up in the last polls, and so Ohio leaning Republican.
These losses are not surprising.
As noted by many pollsters, it was going to be a close race, but Hillary would eek out a EC win as well as an easy popular win.
It’s still possible for Clinton to end up with over 300 EVs. It may come down to more like 280, but I think 300 is still possible.

Sorry Lizards. We tried. We really tried.
But Trump tapped into a part of our national psyche that we’ve long thought was a thing of the past.
We assumed, this being 2016, that most of the country was past the old feelings of resentment to social progress. It appears we’ve gone backwards at least 50 years. And it’s going to take twice that amount of time to undo this.
Let’s face it. The best the GOP could come up with is Trump. And the best the Dems could come up with is Hillary. In spite of all her experience and life’s work helping others, she still has a ton of baggage. Unwarranted or not.
I hope when I wake up in the morning, this post was warrantless, but I’m going to bed assuming Trump will be the talk of the town tomorrow. It really sucks. But this also proves that us Democrats/Liberals are the ones now out of touch. Honestly. I don’t know where the party goes from here.

The question is how long will it take the Trumpsters to turn on him when he can’t deliver and turns the economy into a shit show
As long as he perpetuates the two-minute hate on a daily basis, they’ll be in his corner. That’s why most of them love him in the first place—he punches down, just like they do.
The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp.

re: #130 thedopefishlives
Fuck it. I can’t deal with the negativity. Win, lose, or draw, I think the thing that defines this election most is the extreme level of rhetoric. If we want to stop people like Trump in the future, we have to start toning the shit down. Unfortunately, that has to cut both ways, and I have little hope that the Republicans will be willing to engage in civil discourse, but we have to start somewhere.
Tone down what?
Trump is fucking proto fascist. Not rhetoric…he actually fits definable profiles!!
Prosecute your political foes…shut down the free press…cult of personality….betrayed national greatness myth….political violence….use of incompatible left and right wing economics…disregard the democratic and legal norms…
He is an immediate threat to the very fabric of our democracy, and he is not going to be constrained by “checks and balances”. Do you really think a GOP congress will impeach him when he violates the constitution and ignores the courts?
Those days will be gone. He will be the strongman with an actual army and millions followers who want to see people like me punished.

Trump’s election will trigger Republicans’ backup plan to take control of the White House.
After some Trump scandal involving perjury or obstruction of justice gets orchestrated traction in the media (what better click bait?); the House, having practiced on President Bill Clinton, would initiate impeachment discussions.
Trump is given a choice.
Resign with promise of pardon of all criminal activity, or face impeachment and possible conviction by the Senate.

You think England under Theresa May would even admit them? As for Germany, Merkel has her own problems and might not even be Kanzlerin much longer. Bear in mind, there’s no power that compares to the US military in the world. No cavalry is coming over the hill to save the day.
Let me repeat myself:
So far the only big surprise is Florida. It was polled as leaning Dem, and ended up Drumpf.
NC was a pegged a real toss=up in many polls.
OH was leaning Drumpf before the election (so was Iowa, a state to watch.)
CO was a toss-up in some polls but leaned Dem in others and Clinton carried it.
People worrying about MI and WI need to wait until the big Dem precincts come in.
Clinton was polled from the beginning with historic negatives, only beaten in that category later by Drumpf.
Tonight may be disappointing, but it is not surprising to those who have been paying attention.

11:12pm: Using the projections of the NY Times, Donald Trump is outperforming his pre-election polling margins by a median of 4.0 +/- 2.6 percentage points (the 8 states in the Geek’s Guide). In Senate races, Republicans are outperforming by 6.0 +/- 3.7 percentage points. A five-percentage-point polling miss would be a tremendous error by modern polling standards. Every single polling outfit basically looks like a bunch of fools now. We can’t really blame the Wangs or Silvers of the web because they were working with the polling numbers of assholes who apparently missed a 5%+ swing in Trump’s favor.
One thing we can say is that Silver’s assumption that such an unexpected swing in one state would correlate with similar swings in other states seems to have been rather more correct than a lot of pundits seemed to think.

The folks in MI seem to be under the delusion that Trump’s bringing those jobs back. He’s not, no more than he’s bringing back the coal jobs. Anybody who voted for him thinking that the trade wars he’s going to launch against China means manufacturing is coming back is not in touch with reality.
They are going to learn it the hard way. The only way this country seems to learn anything if we learn anything at all.

enplaned says:
November 8, 2016 at 11:24 pmCassandra was the daughter of Priam, King of Troy. It was her curse to be able to tell the future, but to not be believed when she did so.
I can’t tell the future, but right from the beginning, right from 2013/2014, I knew Hillary would be a bad candidate. I don’t hate her — I don’t think she’s worse than any other politician in terms of morals, ethics, etc. She’s a smart lady, works hard. But that doesn’t matter — the country doesn’t like her. And a lot of what she did played into the narrative already laid out for her — emails, whatever.
I can’t tell the future, and god, I hope she somehow pulls this out tonight. But I have a pretty damn good idea of what it’s like to be Cassandra — and it’s like a waking fucking nightmare. And it’s been like that for most of this cycle and it’s goddamn awful tonight. I haven’t slept properly for weeks, months worrying about this goddamn election. And every fucking nightmare is coming true.
If you think I take one ounce of satisfaction from this, you’re fucking wrong. I have never been so unhappy to be right. But win or lose, Democrats better start seeing reality for what it is if they want to make progress. And they can start with the reality that the Democratic powers that be are completely fucking incompetent to have greased the skids for Hillary and putting her forward as our champion.
We need to stare reality in the face if we’re to get by this. No flinching.

The only solace my wife and I can take in this right now is that Trump is a PT Barnum. He’s been selling an act the entire year and, as the talking heads have said, nobody knows what he’ll do if he takes office. The wall, muslims, Obamacare - none of what he said about that is meaningful if he wins. Will he surround himself with Pences and Ryans? Maybe. I can’t believe people are surprised that the country that has allowed cops to ruthlessly murder young black folks would be ok with Trump.

For a lot of people in this country, President Trump is revenge for 8 years of Obama.

My family fled Poland right before the Nazis rolled in. What the hell am I supposed to do? Mr. Trump has a whole bunch of people in his camp that think the grandchildren of undocumented immigrants should be deported (re: Rep. Steve King).
I am pretty sure three generations of military service in my family would count for squat. Better brush up on my Polish.
Don’t worry; you’re white.
re: #450 darthstar
The only solace my wife and I can take in this right now is that Trump is a PT Barnum. He’s been selling an act the entire year and, as the talking heads have said, nobody knows what he’ll do if he takes office. The wall, muslims, Obamacare - none of what he said about that is meaningful if he wins. Will he surround himself with Pences and Ryans? Maybe. Or he could go middle of the road and try to be successful as president.
I would go with the worst possible scenario. He’s not only an ideologe… he’s an ill-tempered ideologe that wants to exact revenge.
Michael Steele looks as stunned as James Carville does. Neither of them wanted this to happen. But they’re carnival barkers just like Trump. This is how they make their living.
I was hoping for women, latinos, and AA to save the rest of us.
But it’s not their fault.

At least that piece of shit Mark Kirk lost in IL. That and Arpaio getting the boot may end up being most of the few crumbs of good news tonight.

A shitload of people didn’t survive the Civil War
re: #414 MsJ
Tell me. I just bought a car I have to pay for.
And it’s not just financial. I made the mistake of being in Europe when Bush 2.0 was in office at peak world hatred. It was constant confrontations from people asking how did America become so powerful with so many stupid, ignorant people? And how could we have voted an old Actor like Reagan into office Blah blah blah
It was a nightmare! I can’t imagine what it will be like now!
I’m so embarrassed.

She’s actually right. I’ve always figured that a big part of the Brexit “Leave” vote was the idea of sticking it to former PM David Cameron, who was not exactly ‘Mr. Popularity’.

We’re not seceding. We’ve got legal weed coming. Thankfully.

From Balloon Juice:
I really am not in the mood right now for this “Oh, I feel your pain, but I was always right…” BS from Bros and wannabe Bros. Fuck’em, this is on them just as I’ve been telling them for months. Every single fucking one of them that said “Oh, my conscience won’t let me vote for her,” the next 4 years is on their heads. They had the most progressive Dem platform in ages and they pissed it away because they wanted Bernie. Their “burn down the village to save it” mentality has just set us back a generation.

Y’all, the West Coast is probably near the top of Trump’s “Places I Want to Nuke” list. :/

I am only surprised that it took Princess Smegma so long to crawl out from under her rock.

I’m talking about the country, dude. You don’t need to tell me the human cost of the Civil War. What do you think, I’m dumb?
re: #456 Big Beautiful Door
Ga was always going for Trump. She needs Mi, Nv, NH, all of Maine and Nb’s 2d congressional district for 270. Its still doable.
Nebr. District 2 will not go for Mrs. Clinton.
re: #189 BeachDem
Some of us will. Some of us won’t.
One of them is my wife. She’s disabled, lives in federal housing and is dependant on Medicaid and SSI to stay alive.
So, if the Mussolini clone wins she’ll soon be homeless, sick and disabled.
We’ve got plans that we can’t mention here.
re: #358 Eclectic Cyborg
See I don’t think it was all the racist, populist stuff that brought Trump this close, it was deep seated hatred for the Clintons and women than most of us never even knew was there.
I disagree. Even hatred of the Clintons could not have made rational, non-hating people vote for someone as disgusting as Trump.
I am just totally at a loss. I truly didn’t believe this country has this many fucking racist, hateful, ignorant people in it, but I guess I was wrong.

Funny. I’m seeing Bros blaming all this on the Clinton voters. We should have gone for Bernie.
re: #386 EPR-radar
The Johnson voters don’t bother me, since they would mostly be Trump voters if they weren’t entertaining themselves with 3rd party nonsense.
It’s the Stein voters that need to fuck themselves sideways with rusty farm implements.
The Stein voters for sure, but I think Johnson picked up some lefties as well—the former LuapNor hipster gang.
re: #394 Scottishdragon
Very possible…but a generation worth of damage will have been done.
And there are many who won’t survive four years of Trump.
re: #480 teleskiguy
If that’s the way you want it, then yes.
re: #488 SteveMcGaziBolaGate RN
What’s the “way I want it”? Enlighten me.
Well it sure looks like our Democrats in the Senate are going to be busy filibustering just about everything that comes to the floor for a vote for the next 4 years.
re: #426 Targetpractice
Tomorrow, they wake up to find themselves in Nazi Germany in the 30s. How will they know which of their neighbors, their coworkers, their “friends” voted for the short-fingered vulgarian. Some will assure them that it has nothing to do with hate towards them, but that’s bullshit. They may not hate, but they have become an accessory to hate.
I think it’s unfair to compare today’s United States to Nazi Germany in the 30s.
Hitler lost the election.
