Watch Live: Something Wicked This Way Comes

Politics • Views: 43,275

[Live event concluded.]

Here’s a live feed, minus the annoying cable news chatter, in case you want to watch the dawn of the Trump Horror.

I feel obligated to watch, even though every cell in my body is fighting against it. I had a hard time sleeping last night; woke up with a feeling of dread.

This election has tested my faith in the essential decency of America and its people like nothing else in my lifetime. I sincerely hope I’m wrong, but I fear we’re about to experience a true authoritarian nightmare unlike anything we’ve seen in this country before, led by rapacious men who seek only to enrich themselves and their cronies.

I sincerely hope I’m wrong. I’ve never wished so hard in my life that I was wrong about something so important. But I don’t think it’s going to turn out that way.

Trump’s all about appearances, and the half-empty Mall is one heck of an appearance.

Trump simply didn’t get the crowds. Maybe that’s because people just don’t like him. A majority of the nation in fact. Not that his supporters or the GOP cares, because they’re the ones who will be in complete control of all three branches of government in just a few minutes. They’re the ones who will tip the Supreme Court in their favor for a generation to come after blocking Obama’s pick for nearly a year (not even giving him a hearing or a vote).

The GOP is off to the races to see what programs and policies can be undone. Decades of social and economic progress are threatened all so an entitled few can make even more money on the backs of everyone else.

Far too many people bought into Trump’s baffling BS about making America great again and that he’ll bring jobs back. These are among the people who will be hit hardest when that doesn’t come to pass, and they see the jobs continue to drain away from the Rust Belt, from mining communities throughout the country, all while the air/water quality comes under attack from a revanchist EPA that doesn’t even know lead poisoning has a detrimental effect on childhood development. And their health care will suffer (because far too many bought into the GOP bs about Obamacare somehow infringing on their liberty - otherwise known as the right to get sick and incur a medically induced bankruptcy).

Those who are least able to endure the burdens are the ones who will be stuck with them thanks to a GOP that is intent to push all the burdens on to them all to favor a privileged few.

How will Sam Harris argue against that one?

That’s another thing Obama did that was great. He acknowledged the place in American society for non-believers as well. As AM has said, Presidents as recently as H.W. Bush questioned the patriotism that atheists and agnostics could have for this country so Obama definitely deserves props for mentioning that this is our country just as much as it is that of the religious believers. Obama by far is the most inclusive president we’ve ever had and that IMO is his best legacy that he leaves us.

Or MacArthur. Honestly though, I think even if Patton had lived, Eisenhower would have became President anyhow. Ike was the man “who won.” Patton was respected in those days but he wasn’t the deity that Trump makes him out to be now. There was controversy about him even then. For my money, the best of Ike’s generals was Omar Bradley. My grandfather always spoke highly of him. Grandpa also hated MacArthur for wanting to expand the Korean War into China.

Sound energy policy begins with the recognition that we have vast untapped domestic energy reserves right here in America. The Trump Administration will embrace the shale oil and gas revolution to bring jobs and prosperity to millions of Americans. We must take advantage of the estimated $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil, and natural gas reserves, especially those on federal lands that the American people own. We will use the revenues from energy production to rebuild our roads, schools, bridges and public infrastructure. Less expensive energy will be a big boost to American agriculture, as well.

Apparently “unity” has magical powers much as does the phrase “radical islamic terrorism”.

Radical Islamic terrorists are laughing their asses off right now. They couldn’t have hoped for a better speech.

That is recruitment speech fodder for the terror groups. They can frame it showing Trump and the US as attacking the way of life of devout Muslims, and therefore the only way forward is to attack those who seek to do them harm.

Compare Trump’s declaration that, “Today’s ceremony, however has very special meaning. Because today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another. But we are transferring power from Washington D.C. and giving it back to you… the people. For too long a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have born the cost. Washington flourished but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered but the jobs left and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs and while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land. That all changes starting right here and right now because this moment is your moment. It belongs to you.”

Vs.
Sound familiar? Declareth the cartoon Batman villain: “We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you… the people. Gotham is yours. None shall interfere. Do as you please. Start by storming Blackgate, and freeing the oppressed! Step forward those who would serve. For and army will be raised. The powerful will be ripped from their decadent nests, and cast out into the cold world that we know and endure. Courts will be convened. Spoils will be enjoyed. Blood will be shed. The police will survive, as they learn to serve true justice. This great city… it will endure. Gotham will survive!”

As much as Saudi Arabia and Iran are rivals, a war crusade against Islam will unite the two countries against us.

Moreover, even if Saudi Arabia were to sit such a war out, the entire Persian Gulf would be at risk for shipping oil. All Gulf states’ oil would be trapped and unable to ship..

The green and black cross are a group that tries to help both of those groups when they protest by providing legal support against when the UK police uses illegal acts to break up protests, e.g. ‘kettling’.

I would too but I don’t make the rules. Of course, if I were wearing a t-shirt, part of one of my tattoos would be exposed and you know how some people are about those. They shouldn’t be but a lot of especially older people have the wrong assumptions about people with ink.

wrenchwench  Jan 20, 2017 • 11:34:00am

This morning I had Mr. w turn off the radio (we have no TV) two hours before the swearing. He wanted to listen two hours later. So I walked to work in the rain while the swearing and the speech were going on. Got my coffee, had to break up an old-people hug session to get out, got back to the shop, and my first customer is the guy I threw out last August (for being a jerk every time he’s come in over the last 17 years). I let him walk around and look at stuff, I answered his questions, I told him he could put that tire on layaway if he had $5 but not the $20 to buy it. He didn’t even have that. He looked at some more stuff but I didn’t waste much time with him, having seen the inside of his wallet. He said he’ll be back after he goes to the bank. His nice wife was sitting out in the car which is probably why I didn’t throw him out when he walked in.

The second customer was a guy who called yesterday, and he brought in the bike we spoke about, which I thought he was going to put on consignment. He bought it from me about 10 years ago, but doesn’t ride any more (or drive) because he’s got macular degeneration, and he told me about some bike crashes, car crashes, and a plane crash he’s been in. He walks 4 miles a day. He gave me the bike. He’d still be talking, but his nice wife came in to get him because he’d already told so many stories.

The third guy who came in used to come in every. single. day. Then his nephew moved to town and hung out with him for several months. They are both very unusual people with very unusual ways of life, and the two of them did not always get along with each other, and sometimes not with other people, to the felonious level in one instance. But they couldn’t get the ‘victims’ to press the charges, so the nephew was free to leave town, but not before his uncle did him a wrong turn and I took the nephew’s side in that, and the uncle quit coming in every. single. day. This was all since my accident. Today was the first time the uncle came in again in about a year. He was selling books, which was his usual reason for coming in. I got two for $1.50. We’ll see how that progresses.

I hope everyone else has had an interesting morning.

I’m at a loss to understand it, because all religious faith is alien and makes no sense to me. It doesn’t matter which flavour of faith it is.

And to one degree or another, every denomination I have come across uses the Bible to justify hypocrisy.

Yeah, you need to avoid Conservatives. They twisted the bible to justify never growing into responsible adults. Liberal Christianity tricks people into being more like Jesus, so doesn’t have hypocrisy at it’s core. It’s just as fiction-based, but at least it makes people better rather than worse.
