Quebec Mosque Terrorist: Right Wing Anti-Immigration Fan of Donald Trump and French Fascist Marine Le Pen

The spread of far right anti-Muslim ideology has consequences
World • Views: 78,850

Alexandre Bissonnette, suspect in Quebec City mosque killings (source: Facebook)

Six people were killed last night in a terrorist attack on a Quebec City mosque.

Right wing blogs and media instantly jumped to the conclusion that Islamists were responsible for the shootings, as they always do. But today we’re learning more about the sole suspect in this terrible attack: he’s a far right anti-immigration fan of Donald Trump and French fascist leader Marine Le Pen.

A former classmate, Jean-Michel Allard-Prus, who studied politics with him, at Université Laval and has kept in touch with him, told Le Journal de Quebec that Bissonnette, “has right-wing political ideas, pro-Israel, anti-immigration. I had many debates with him about Trump. He was obviously pro-Trump.”

His Facebook page has already been taken down, but here’s a screenshot from his “likes” page, courtesy of LGF contributor electrotek:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued the following statement today:

“It was with tremendous shock, sadness and anger that I heard of this evening’s tragic and fatal shooting at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec located in the Ste-Foy neighbourhood of the city of Québec.

“We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of all those who have died, and we wish a speedy recovery to those who have been injured.

“While authorities are still investigating and details continue to be confirmed, it is heart-wrenching to see such senseless violence. Diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we, as Canadians, hold dear.

“Muslim-Canadians are an important part of our national fabric, and these senseless acts have no place in our communities, cities and country. Canadian law enforcement agencies will protect the rights of all Canadians, and will make every effort to apprehend the perpetrators of this act and all acts of intolerance.

“Tonight, we grieve with the people of Ste-Foy and all Canadians.”

UPDATE at 1/30/17 11:55:00 am by Charles Johnson

And now, the Trump team is using this attack by one of their own followers to justify Trump’s anti-immigration policies: The White House just cited the Quebec mosque attack to justify Trump’s policies.

WASHINGTON—U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is citing the Sunday attack on Muslims in Quebec City as an example of why his own policies are needed.

“We condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. It’s a terrible reminder of why we must remain vigilant, and why the president is taking steps to be proactive, rather than reactive, when it comes to our nation’s safety and security,” press secretary Sean Spicer said at his daily briefing on Monday.

I think it’s time that we perform “extreme vetting” procedure on possible Trump supporters coming to this country, lest they try to influence and pull horrific atrocities like this here.

Cat’s out of the bag, wingnuts. Has Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller started claiming victimization again?

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) confirms that Alexandre Bissonnette is a suspect. Mohamed Belkhadir would be considered to be a witness.

I know this goes back to the prior thread and Spicer’s incomprehensible defense of Trump’s Holocaust Remembrance Day announcement, the latest line Spicer’s trying is that there was a Jew who oversaw/helped write/gave input in writing it.

It is clear to all who see what Trump’s doing is that he’s looking to curb civil rights to so many people who have had rights restored or gained rights/protections over the past 50 years.

He’s on pace to be the most regressive president in our nation’s history in record time.

Curbing civil rights for LGBT shows that anyone who thought he was going to just pay lip service isn’t paying attention. The GOP doesn’t have a problem with any of this either. They think this is fine - they opposed Obergefell and LGBT rights. They oppose protecting rights of minorities like Muslims who come here to avoid oppression elsewhere.

It’s what the GOP does. It’s who they have been for far too long.

I suppose the Log Cabin Republicans are down with this.

How about the Human Rights Campaign? They endorsed former Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill) against (then) Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D) because they thought Kirk had “evolved” on the issue and Republicans needed to be rewarded for taking a principled stand or some such derp.

HRC lost a lot of members and donors (including me) over that endorsement.

It was that well-reasoned argument you gave in that article that had me coming back again and again (lurking for a long time before I signed up).

It is evidence that even the most-convinced of his arguments person can change his mind in the face of evidence that cannot be refuted.

That is why I never consider a Trump supporter “gone.” While I might not know the particular piece that flips their opinion, something might.

I don’t remember in one of our political shouting matches with my wife (they are famous in the village), but I pointed her to something that tripped a switch, and a lifelong Libertarian Party member flipped and became a Democratic Party supporter (even doing mailings and calls for Hillary Clinton this cycle).

No, it would still have to go through the court system. The Supreme Court has very limited “original jurisdiction” (meaning cases where they can be the first court to hear a case, which is basically limited to cases involving ambassadors or claims between states, and even then they and/or Congress can (and have) empowered lower courts to have original jurisdiction). But given recent precedent, the District Court would likely quickly find for the plaintiff, the Court of Appeal would likely uphold, and then it’d go to the Supreme Court.

Corner congressmen, buy comfortable shoes for long walks holding signs (not made from Georgia-Pacific products), write letters to businesses praising principles stands and opposing no stand, talking to neighbours about what is so bad about all this.

I can’t go to a city protest (too far away). I can write letters or talk to people in person. Fortunately here, almost no one uses the Internet, so all I have to do is get past the bullshit mountain of the hate/Christian radio stations and FOX television here.

Yeah, one of the great things about the Internet has been watching people change their minds and finding oneself aligned with bloggers I once disagreed with.

It was that way with Balloon Juice too. At first I remember him being a wingnut, but then I’d hear somewhere that he wrote something critical of the RW and I’d go check it out. Then I’d go back every now and then to see what else he was writing, some I’d agree with, some things not, but as his writing and opinions evolved, so did mine.

I’d long heard of LGF but never visited. I only heard what others said, and assumed it was as bad as FreeRepublic or the like. But then one day I heard someone say that the LGF founder had ripped some RWNJ or some wingnut issue and I couldn’t believe it.

Then I swung by the place to see. Over six years ago.

So, yeah, most of the Internet is crap and there’s a lot of harassment of women in particular and just a lot of vile stuff all around. But it’s also pretty neat to see how views have evolved, my own too, having once pretty much dined on some of the most left-wing blogs for years.

electrotek  Jan 30, 2017 • 12:48:37pm

Anyone remember this self-introspective essay by a Norwegian right winger in the wake of Oslo and Utoya, and a few excerpts from the piece stand out for me to this day:

1)

I don’t want to apportion blame here, not now. Clearly none of these writers have ever advocated violence. But it is equally clear that there are parts of the anti-Islamic ideology that are compatible with violence, and use rhetoric that, although non-violent, carries the obvious implication of violence.

2)

The point isn’t necessarily that the wordsmiths are to blame, but that this is a tricky situation to untangle. It requires a steady hand, as you attempt to find the line where legitimate criticism of political opponents turns into implicit justifications for violence. You need to have a clear head. You need to apply objective criteria that are equally appropriate for all ideologies, all forms of rhetoric. If you condemn critics of Islam for painting a picture of a world in crisis where violence appears the only solution, then you must condemn Islamists who do the same. If you instead exonerate the Islam critics, you must do the same with the non-violent Islamists. The same standard must apply to all, whether you otherwise sympathize with their ideas or not.

3)

There’s also a defensiveness in many of these reactions that is disgraceful in the way it assumes that this is all about them, that the important thing now is to rescue the reputation of their own particular brand of Islam criticism, so that they can continue where they left off on July 21.

The Muslim Ban EO leaked a few days in draft form, which allowed protests to be organised on short notice, and start right when the ban came into effect.

I’m pretty much a “shop locally” guy.

That said, in many areas of commerce here there is only one provider for sixty miles or more.

If a local business decides to discriminate, I will quite clearly tell them why I am taking my business with them to the Internet.

The 27-year-old was interested in politics. This is what he studied at Université Laval, in addition to anthropology.
Éric Debroise knew him and contacted the police after the tragedy to inform them about his ideals “very right and ultra nationalist white supremacist,” he explains.
Bissonnette had cut off some friends for a month and no longer answered the phone or Facebook messages, according to Debroise.
“He really liked Trump and had a permanent discontent with the left,” he adds.
Jean-Michel Allard-Prus was from the same cohort at the baccalaureate.
Although he was far from appreciating his ideas, he has remained in contact since Bissonnette wrote to him from time to time to debate. His last conversation was three weeks ago.
He speaks of Bissonnette as a very timid individual. He believes he is one of the few who spoke to him at the University.
Right-wing and trenchant ideas
“He has right-wing political ideas, pro-Israel, anti-immigration. I had many debates with him about Trump. He was obviously pro-Trump, “he said, adding that Bissonnette had never referred to violence as a political medium.

Evolution of ideas, how does it work?

Strange how those fellows seem to think that once you have an idea about something, you can’t change your mind about it, even in the face of overwhelming evidence.

Because some people never can or will, like those who were shown photos of Trump’s and Obama’s inaugurations and still insisted that Trump’s had more people in it.

9. Anti-Islamic bigotry that goes far beyond simply criticizing radical Islam, into support for fascism, violence, and genocide (see: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer, etc.)

Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there’s been a rebound in new small businesses (it plummeted after the mortgage bubble), but new small businesses are hiring fewer people within their first year than in the past. Unfortunately, the numbers only go back to 1994.

Also, about half of those businesses close shop within 6 years.

As someone who grew up with self-employed parents, and who has owned/run his own business, I can say it’s not easy. But not for the reasons many Republicans think. When you first open shop, you’re working without a net, and you end up working way more hours than you anticipate for much less than you planned. Plus, a good chuck of your time is spent doing things like chasing down payments from customers (if you’re not in retail).

And, per Charles P. Pierce:

Republicans have to decide, once and for all, if they stand for the republic or for one man’s ghastly view of his fellow humans and the world they’ve created.

Paul Ryan has made it clear that he would support Caligula if Caligula’s horse promised to vote in the Senate to cut the estate tax, so he’s hopeless. Saying, as did Senators Ben Sasse and Susan Collins, that the problem with the president*’s order is that it’s “too broad” is mushy nonsense. Senator Bob Corker’s lament that it was badly drawn will not do, either. The problem is that the order is a moral and political abomination, not that it’s badly worded. Jesus H. Christ on an oxcart, syntax is the least of our problems.

My theme song for today…

American Gangster Time

Money verse:

What you got hidden up your sleeve?
The tracks of the train that were bidding you to leave
When they say that you should flatter to deceive
Don’t count on any reprieve

The hands of the helpless are raised
Your dead little secrets are praised
The people stand dumbstruck and dazed
By the inches that you have erased

It’s a drag
Saluting that starry rag
I’d rather go blind
For speaking my mind
Or use it just like a gag
So raise it in anger
Just let it hang
American gangster time
Committing the perfect crime
In American Gangster Time

Grr…I have to submit a cover letter for a couple online job applications.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Put yourself in the position of the person reading the letter. What would you want to see? If it is a small company, the person reading the letter is probably doing (or helping with) the hiring - explain how you can help them out and solve their problems without a long ramp up period. For a big firm, the first person reading your letter is weeding out a bunch of resumes, so don’t disqualify yourself. No typos, nothing that would make you look like an extra bother.

From 45’s EO on regulations:

Unless prohibited by law, whenever an executive department or agency (agency) publicly proposes for notice and comment or otherwise promulgates a new regulation, it shall identify at least two existing regulations to be repealed.

The idiocy of this is staggering. It shows a complete lack of understanding on how regulations are written - not just the process but the format. I mean, I may need that lawhawk macro about shit being unbelievable but totally believable.

That is incredibly stupid.

How about just mandating a review of existing regulations to determine which ones can be repealed?

There are a lot of crazy regulations on the books that need to be revised, When I was a projectionist for a while in college there were all these crazy regulations about handling film stock and arc bulbs that hadn’t really applied in decades since they stopped making them so flammable and explodey. I think those were state regulations, but I imagine government agencies are littered with regulations like that that could be cleaned up.

“The individuals who instigated this … have a self-serving personal agenda and do not represent the views or interests of the vast majority of British people.”

If Trump was banned, he would abandon his plans for a further £700 million ($1.1 billion) investment in Scotland, she said.

I know, right?

And I had nitwits trying to argue on twitter that there were plenty of regs that could be repealed without anyone noticing or being harmed. I asked for one.

They came up with “private investigators” as though just anyone can become one, and what they can or cannot do (rights/liabilities). And those folks who are PIs are certainly affected.

I have not heard from that nitwit since.

Reality is that there are a lot of regs because the economy is vast and that regulations help commerce and provide protections and guidance to all the participants in society.

Trump’s EO is meant to disrupt the process.

It’s already succeeding - the IRS was going to be releasing new regs on partnership audits, but had to hold that up because of this asinine requirement. So, instead of helping taxpayers and tax professionals know what new procedures are, we’re going to have to wait and see what the hell is going on.

In tax season.

This is on purpose.

I recognize this from my brief employment at a North Carolina thread mill in 1974. It’s a thread waxing machine. It unwound thread from the big spool on top, ran it through hot liquid wax in the trough on which the children are standing, and rewound it onto the smaller spools they are collecting. That’s right, the kids are standing right on a bath of what amounts to boiling oil. The troughs sometimes caught fire and part of my job as attendant was to snuff them out when they did.
The machines in our plant were made in 1880, so these might be the very same ones. They had been modernized with a compact electric motor instead of the overhead belt drive and the troughs were aluminum by the 1970s, but they look essentially identical.

During the Obama Administration, there was someone claiming to be a White House insider, who told exactly the stories that wingnuts wanted to hear, like Obama had to be locked in the bathroom while HRC and Leon Panetta ran the Osama bin Laden op.

ALWAYS be extremely cautious of anyone anonymous claiming to be an insider, and telling you what you want to hear.

I get constant email from HRC, but they’re way way down on the list of groups I want to donate to. So far down I’ll never get to them.

I’ve been expecting the anti-gay proclamation to come down any time now. It’s going to be legally worthless but it will set his minions off on a rampage of hate and discrimination. At least they can’t tell us to go back to where we came from…

U.S. Customs and Border Protection rejected the resolution Monday, said Joseph Hohenstein, an attorney for the Assali family.

Note that these are Christians being persecuted (maybe that’s what Trump means when he says it’s not a Muslim ban). I found this other nugget from the Allentown Morning Call

The visa process for the Assalis’ relatives started in 2003 and they were approved in December, Sarah Assali said. But the families decided to spend one last Christmas in Damascus with relatives who would not be joining them in the United States.

So Trump is screwing over Christians for celebrating Christmas.

At least he doesn’t say Happy Holidays.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKRC) - Certain Medicaid beneficiaries would be required to pay a new monthly premium under Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s proposed state budget.

The $67 billion dollar, two-year spending blueprint rolled out Monday relies on $200 million from new premiums paid by childless, non-pregnant participants in the federal-state health care program.

The governor also proposed a two-year freeze on tuition and fees at all Ohio public colleges and universities.

He also suggests a 17-percent income-tax cut through a combination of increases to other taxes, including those on alcohol, tobacco, gas drilling and sales.

It’s a symbolic victory, but one has to believe it’s the sort of thing that will light 45’s twitter feed on fire tonight:

Acting Attorney General Sally Q. Yates, a holdover from the Obama administration, ordered the Justice Department on Monday not to defend President Trump’s executive order on immigration in court.

“I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right,” Ms. Yates wrote in a letter to Justice Department lawyers. “At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful.”

The decision is largely symbolic — Mr. Trump’s nominee to be attorney general, Jeff Sessions, is likely to be confirmed soon — but it highlights the deep divide at the Justice Department and elsewhere in the government over Mr. Trump’s order.

She serves at the pleasure of the president, but here’s another fun fact:

Mr. Trump has the authority to fire Ms. Yates, but as the top Senate-confirmed official at the Justice Department, she is the only one authorized to sign foreign surveillance warrants, an essential function at the department.

This is starting to look like a spec script for season 5 of West Wing (or House of Cards, I suppose)

Been seeing this article making the rounds about how the Muslim ban isn’t akin to the ban on Jews entering the US in the 1930s.

1. There was no threat of Jewish terrorists infiltrating the United States. The same cannot be said about Muslim terrorists.

As an ethno-religious group, Jews suffered tremendously under the genocidal programs of Nazi Germany. The West’s resistance to absorbing refugees was not informed by the actions of Jews themselves, but rather pre-existing isolationist policies developed as a consequence of WWI. The residue of European anti-Semitism may have been a factor as well.

In contrast, the threat of Islamic terror is self-evident. The litany of attacks against Western assets by Muslim fanatics cannot be overlooked.

“Jews who came to America were not themselves violent. They did not strap bombs on themselves and blow themselves up in theaters; they did not go into restaurants and execute diners, one by one,” notes American Thinker, adding, “they did not attempt to set up a caliphate wherever they moved to, although they did tend to dominate the deli, bagel-making, and stand-up comedy fields.”

This is factually wrong. US officials repeatedly claimed that Jews were a national security threat before WWII. Thousands of Jews were turned away over the fear that they would be Nazi spies.

These suspicions seeped into American immigration policy. In late 1938, American consulates were flooded with 125,000 applicants for visas, many coming from Germany and the annexed territories of Austria. But national quotas for German and Austrian immigrants had been set firmly at 27,000.

Immigration restrictions actually tightened as the refugee crisis worsened. Wartime measures demanded special scrutiny of anyone with relatives in Nazi territories—even relatives in concentration camps. At a press conference, President Roosevelt repeated the unproven claims from his advisers that some Jewish refugees had been coerced to spy for the Nazis. “Not all of them are voluntary spies,” Roosevelt said. “It is rather a horrible story, but in some of the other countries that refugees out of Germany have gone to, especially Jewish refugees, they found a number of definitely proven spies.”

Here and there, skeptics objected. As the historian Deborah Lipstadt points out in her book Beyond Belief, The New Republic portrayed the government’s attitude as “persecuting the refugee.” The Nation didn’t believe that the State Department could “cite a single instance of forced espionage.” But these voices were drowned out in the name of national security.

America’s policies created a striking dissonance with the news from Nazi Germany. In the Australian newspaper The Advertiser, above an update on Bahr’s trial, a feature story put the refugee crisis in chilling context: “About 50,000 Jews from the protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and from Berlin, Hamburg, and Westphalia have been dumped by the Nazis at Terezin.” Until the very end of 1944—by which time photographs and newspaper reports had demonstrated that the Nazis were carrying out mass murder—Attorney General Francis Biddle warned Roosevelt not to grant immigrant status to refugees.

So no, that first point is factually wrong.

On it goes. Misrepresentations. Ignoring that refugees are seeking refuge from violence, regardless of the cause. These are people who want nothing to do with the violence. They’re the people we want to protect and cultivate - not turn our backs on them.

According to La Presse, Bissonnette is a political science student at Laval University, who was known to troll a Facebook group for refugees. Group administrator François Deschamps told La Presse that Bissonnette was generally xenophobic and used the term “feminazi.” The Globe and Mail reported that Bissonnette also expressed support for French nationalist Marine Le Pen, who has compared Muslims praying in the street to a Nazi “occupation.”

Two men who knew Bissonnette told Journal de Québec that he was a Trump supporter. One, Éric Debroise, said he informed police Bissonnette is an “ultra nationalist white supremacist,” while one of Bissonnette’s classmates, Jean-Michel Allard-Prus, said “he has right-wing political ideas, pro-Israel, anti-immigration. I had many debates with him about Trump. He was obviously pro-Trump.”

The Francophone media universe in Quebec is incredibly insular. You can’t hear Rush over the air there, and even if you could, nobody would be listening.

But you don’t need Rush to breed a homegrown killer, either. There are two prominent French-language shock hosts, Jeff Fillion and Andre Arthur, who bred their own hate all over the airwaves until both lost their jobs last year.

I’d be surprised if the killer didn’t turn out to have been a fan of theirs.

I was just thinking the same thing. The guy looks so unnatural.

Guys, be nice, he’s a paraplegic.

Representative Kihuen is my rep and I voted for him. I got to meet him yesterday at the protest in Las Vegas and thank him for doing what he’s doing and that I was proud I voted for him. He was completely outraged by what’s happening.

Excellent. Swearing is an essential part of the Resistance. This is not business as usual, and we aren’t going to sit around and politely discuss Trump and the Republicans’ latest attempts at fascism over crumpets and tea.

Didn’t you hear, when the yam goes to London (dog save the Queen) he wants horses down the mall and tea with William and Kate.

You would hope that would make him more sympathetic. But no.

I understand he shouldn’t be criticized for his physical traits.

But his mental thinking is open game.

She’s in the new Gilmore Girls 4-part thingie on Netflix.

The staffers signed nondisclosure agreements, according to two sources familiar with the matter. Trump’s transition operation forced its staff to sign these agreements, but it would be unusual to extend that requirement to congressional employees.

Next up…Trump and Bannon figuring out how they can nationalize all American corporations and make them state operated.

For the good of the country wealthy white CEOs that will be given control mind you.

That’s a good one.

Yeah, he could. But if the FISA Courts and the Intel communities tell him to pond sand, do you really think the Telcoms are going to listen?

Chris Hayes reporting on Bannon’s statement that there are “too many Asian CEO’s in Silicon Valley.”

Yeah: this bit is swell:

TRUMP: We have to keep our talented people in this country.

BANNON: Um—

TRUMP: I think you agree with that. Do you agree with that?

BANNON: Well I got a tougher — you know, when two thirds or three quarters of the CEOs in Silicon Valley are from South Asia or from Asia, I think — on, my point is, a country’s more like, [inaudible], a country’s more than an economy. We’re a civic society.

“Two-thirds or three-quarters”?? Paranoia much, Steve????

And this creature has the run of the White House, and the President’s ear…..
