This is some very good reporting work by Rachel Maddow, on yet another disturbing connection between Trump and his gang and the Russian oligarchy. Follow the money.

With a line that runs through newly confirmed Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Rachel Maddow connects the dots between a billionaire Russian oligarch and a Donald Trump deal worth tens of millions of dollars.

Which really only demonstrates the fact that Trump took Bush’s ground level low bar and managed to turn it into buried treasure. I mean, “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” was just simply appalling in its binary, simplistic, reactionary view of conflict & reality. The fact that the Republicans managed to inflict something far worse upon us is actually kind of an amazing accomplishment in terms of the difficulty level involved.

Well, I’m going to bail out of this particular discussion … you are now deliberately ignoring what has been presented to you (David Duke, Richard Spencer, Jared Taylor, Steve Bannon, &c &c &c).

It is no different than “let’s give Mr. Trump a chance” or “he’s still learning the job.” He’s been at this all his life - it’s not like there is no history of Mr. Trump being convicted for racist rental practices or taking out a full-page advert calling for the execution of the (innocent) Central Park Five.

And now he is the most powerful politician in the world.

But we’re supposed to sit back and wait? Like Pol Pot? Like Stalin? Rwanda perhaps?

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. - Maya Angelou.

From that November 1922 New York Times article:

But, several reliable, well-informed sources confirmed the idea that Hitler’s anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded, and that he was merely using anti-Semitic propaganda as bait to catch messes of followers, and keep them aroused, enthusiastic and in line for the time when his organization is perfected and sufficiently powerful to be employed effectively for political purposes.

A sophisticated politician credited Hitler with peculiar political cleverness for laying emphasis and over emphasis on anti-Semitism, saying: “You can’t expect the masses to understand or appreciate your finer real aims. You must feed the masses with cruder morsels and ideas like anti-Semitism. It would be politically all wrong to tell them the truth about where you really are leading them.”

Yeah, I’m not going to wait for him to implement a plan of genocide - that immigration order was only the first step.

I need to take a break from Little Green Footballs for a few days. Perhaps that is why I sent my money to Wonkette yesterday. They don’t make special snowflake arguments for Nazi apologists.

Okay, let me be more blunt: I do not think Drumpf is Hitler. Is he a racist shitbag, yeah. Does he plan to massacre more than six million people outright and try to exterminate an entire identity from the face of the earth, I don’t quite think so.

At this point I’m withholding judgement. ICE is looking to reopen some prison in TX and elsewhere. Do I think they will gas humans? No. Do I think humans will die at their hands? Absolutely. Perhaps we can say Hitler lite. That’s splitting nano hairs.

re: #21 EPR-radar

A distinction without a difference, IMO.

I’d argue that the distinction matters because what Trump represents, whether intentional or not, is the more effective thin wedge end of antisemitism. He started out subtle, pretending not to know who David Duke was, co-opting previous antisemitic attacks and memes for use against Muslims, etc.

Then the wedge got pounded in a little more, so they felt safe refusing to mention Jews on Holocaust Remembrance Day, doubling and tripling down on that decision until they were forced to issue an anemic statement condemning all forms of discrimination including antisemitism.

Then the wedge got pushed in a bit further, when Trump irrationally blew up at that Jewish reporter for a perceived personal attack when no rational observer would’ve interpreted his question that way.

Taking so long to address the uptick in antisemitism and bomb threats is just the latest invasion of the Trump’s wedge. Phrasing his response so as to include the statement “sometimes it’s the reverse” can only be inferred to justify the possible interpretation of current events casting Jews (or their liberal allies) as false flag perpetrators instead of the victims.

So I’d argue the distinction does have a difference, in that it works more insidiously and effectively towards making antisemitic concepts palatable within public discourse.

Well, at least Geller & Co. can be counted on to be reliably consistent in their bigotry & lies. When she’s not busy claiming attacks on mosques/Muslims are false flags, she’s (still) busy trying to convince the Western world that Muslims, not Christians, were and always have been the source of antisemitism in Europe. She still hasn’t quite figured out how to make us guilty Hitler & the Holocaust, but she keeps working on it.

Oh, and she’s VERY annoyed at the stupid Jewicidal Jews who fall for it every time Muslims try to reach out to them. They’re all so blind—they refuse to see that Muslims aren’t reaching out to help out of any sense of shared distress, humanity or empathy, nope—it’s nothing more than cold, calculating exploitation for PR gain. Kinda weird how she makes Muslims sound sneaky, greedy and underhanded just like European antisemites made Jews sound, huh?

I can’t believe human beings are still so STUPID as to be toying around with this lethal shit. “Never again,” my ass—it’s more like “Never ME & MINE again, the rest? Meh.”

I don’t understand why this is the hill you’re choosing to die on. When he first made the statement, I admit I had trouble comprehending what the fuck he was talking about at all. To the extent he’s referencing false flag operations, the idea that we should a) assume he meant liberals in the context of violence/threatened violence against Jews seems an odd step to make (it’s like asking us to assume that he meant Jews if the target of the threats/violence was a bunch of regional Democratic Party offices) and/or b) assume that the statement was not vague enough to be a dog whistle to his anti-Semitic followers.

Furthermore, you seem to think that you have cornered the clear-eyed, logical interpretation of the statement, and ask that the entire incident be divorced from everything we know about Trump, his prior comments, his various appointments, etc. etc. There is no basis to grant him the benefit of the doubt here and I think it’s you that are straining the bounds of logic to assert to firmly that there weren’t significant anti-Semitic undertones with his statement.

“The fiend who set off the bomb does not have the sympathy of the white population in the South; in fact, he set back the cause of the white people there so dramatically as to raise the question whether in fact the explosion was the act of a provocateur - of a Communist, or of a crazed Negro. Some circumstantial evidence lends a hint of plausibility to that notion, especially the ten-minute fuse (surely a white man walking away form the church basement ten minutes earlier would have been noticed?). And let it be said that the convulsions that go on, and are bound to continue, have resulted from revolutionary assaults on the status quo, and a contempt for the law, which are traceable to the Supreme Court’s manifest contempt for the settled traditions of Constitutional practice.”

I don’t understand why this is the hill you’re choosing to die on.

I promise you I’m not figuratively dying any time soon. I’m gonna go to bed soon though.

the idea that we should a) assume he meant liberals in the context of violence/threatened violence against Jews seems an odd step to make (it’s like asking us to assume that he meant Jews if the target of the threats/violence was a bunch of regional Democratic Party offices)

I’m at a loss as to why you find it odd. Trump is being personally blamed for the wave of hatred his rhetoric has unleashed, incl. antisemitic incidents. He knows he is being blamed. His first instinct is to deflect the blame on someone else. He wouldn’t deflect it on the Jews themselves (they are not Muslims, deflecting on them can only backfire, and he knows it and he hasn’t shown this particular type of antisemitism before), so the next best thing is to blame the liberal left protesters who want to set him up. Which is what his adviser happens to have said too.

Furthermore, you seem to think that you have cornered the clear-eyed, logical interpretation of the statement, and ask that the entire incident be divorced from everything we know about Trump,

I interpret the statement in light of everything we know about Trump. The “he blamed the Jews” thesis simply does not fit the big picture. Well, unless one goes with a simplistic “Trump is a Nazi”, like my previous opponent here, in which case yeah, he’s probably already secretly signed the Final Solution order. Otherwise, not so much.

There is no basis to grant him the benefit of the doubt here

There is no basis to grant the antisemitic interpretation a significant weight in the first place, so we don’t even get to discussing benefit of the doubt.

and I think it’s you that are straining the bounds of logic to assert to firmly that there weren’t significant anti-Semitic undertones with his statement.

It can be called effectively antisemitic, insofar as it dismisses Jewish concerns about antisemitism.

re: #111 Nyet

I promise you I’m not figuratively dying any time soon. I’m gonna go to bed soon though.

There is no basis to grant the antisemitic interpretation a significant weight in the first place, so we don’t even get to discussing benefit of the doubt.

It can be called effectively antisemitic, insofar as it dismisses Jewish concerns about antisemitism.

Trump sees everything that happens as something that MAKES TRUMP LOOK/FEEL GOOD or something that MAKES TRUMP LOOK/FEEL BAD. If others are harmed, he doesn’t give a shit about them, it is only about TRUMP.

If something bad happens to white people (for example, an attack by Daesh terrorists against white people, even gay white people) THIS MAKES TRUMP LOOK/FEEL GOOD because he has been warning about RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM so therefore TRUMP TOLD YOU SO.

If something bad happens to minorities (Muslims in Quebec, Indians in Kansas City, JCC’s, Jewish cemeteries) who happen to be hated by Trump supporters (and therefore are the primary suspects), THIS MAKES TRUMP LOOK BAD and therefore he will ignore it. If pressed to say something, he will blurt out HOW THIS MAKES TRUMP FEEL.

Attacks on Muslims, immigrants, Jews, gays, etc. are significant only insofar as TRUMP’S FEELINGS ARE AFFECTED.

I don’t know if Trump can be classified antisemitic as it is extremely hard to make that call unless he comes right out with some damning proof.

But I do think he has a hatred of everything not Trump. If you aren’t in the family or a part of his business he most likely views you suspiciously and most likely puts you into some kind of category in his brain.

I bet along with liberals, Blacks and other categories he probably has one for Jews.

That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have Jewish friends and associates. They go into a different category…probably something like Good Jew.

I have an older brother that is as bigoted as they come. He was always nice around my Black friends if they were at my house or at an auto race or something like that. But I know he would be all “those people” and fucking “N-words” at other times.

Trump is most likely similar. The old “I have Black Jewish friends” used to excuse his hate for individuals that don’t fit in the good _________________ (fill in the race/religion) category but are solidly in the bad category.

So, what kind of behavior is that? Is my brother a racist? Is Trump an anti-Semite?

How many people do you need in the bad category in your messed up head to be one?

By the way if Nyet is still around. I did a quick Google search based on “is Trump an anti-Semite” and it appears ‘mouse is not the only person willing to go down that road. I didn’t read any of the links but I saw several from around October 2016 that had a lot of media wondering the same.

re: #122 Mike Lamb

There types of anti-Semitism?

Of course. E.g. your average old person repeating stereotypes about Jews and finances is not necessarily the same as David Duke and Adolf Hitler.

Jesse Jackson’s “hymie town” remarks, for example, were antisemitic and reprehensible but did not make him the analog of George Lincoln Rockwell.

And are you suggesting that Trump is a rational actor?

Isn’t suggesting that it was an ingenious dog whistle a suggestion of him being a rational actor?

The man’s got a certain gut instinct, or he wouldn’t be where he is today. When he knew that anti-Muslim rhetoric would bring him dividends, he did not hesitate. And yet so far he has not exhibited this particular conspiratorial type of antisemitism, even if people in his circle have.

And unlike anti-Muslim bigotry, this type of antisemitism is still not a “thing” among the conservative base (the Soros thing is not that explicit and they probably believe they are not being antisemitic running with the Soros theories). So what exactly would he have achieved? Sent a signal to a small part of his base, the alt-right? Why choose this moment? Etc.

One has to make more assumptions than are necessary on this hypothesis, and that goes against Occam’s razor.

I can’t stand the sound of his voice, to me it is more agonizing than fingernails on a chalkboard. Although as I have said previously, Bernie Sanders has that same whiny nasal voice but in Bernie’s case it was mitigated somewhat because he could speak in complete sentences.

Some people claimed Hillary had a “shrill cackling voice” which I did not find to be at all the case. She actually has a deep voice for a woman, maybe the result of intensive voice coaching. I know I have a high pitched voice and I can’t stand to listen to me.

That irritating, whiny, nasal voice repeating repeating repeating incoherent gibberish over and over makes me want to stick an ice pick in my ears.

Some points from the core theses for the first half of 2016:

- there were 142500 cases where at least one of the suspects was a migrant
- the number of such crimes decreased from Jan. to June
- about half of all cases had to do with crimes against property
- the crimes “against sexual self-determination” constituted 1,1% of cases
- the crimes “against life” - 0,14%
- there are different tendencies among different groups by origin
- the proportion of suspects among Syrians, Afghans and Iraqis was lower than their proportion among the migrants
- the citizens of the Maghreb states on the other hand were “very strongly” overrepresented
- the migrants from the Balkan states and from Africa (Gambia etc. - non-Maghreb) were “notably” overrepresented
- the crimes “against life” were committed by migrants against migrants of the same nationality in about half of all cases

This entire circular argument about whom trump meant by “reverse” (liberals, Jews, whoever) is just ridiculous.
trump keeps harping on how his messaging skills are 100%, but when you look at how the vast majority of people heard “reverse” and immediately equated that with “Jews” … well, that dog whistle came through loud and clear.
And the trumpsplainers can go right ahead and make excuses and split hairs about semantics and whatever, but the fact of the matter is that people (left, right, and in the middle of nowhere) heard “Jews are doing this to themselves as a false flag to make trump look bad”.

Well, the headline said “originated overseas”. It’s the logical assumption to make. Though what benefit Drumpf gains from this, I don’t even know.

So, I’m curious about how his “keep immigrants and refugees out” to save American jobs will play with the business supporters since he’s linked it to higher wages. That implies at some point without competition from lower wage seekers workers will be able to negotiate higher wages, which in turn seems to point to some potential for unions….

I don’t think this would have worked in the US earlier. POTUS* Trump is the culmination of a decades-long degeneration of the Republican party into a proto-fascist cesspit of Satan.

It sounds to me it’s going to be fairly conventional. I don’t trust a damn word he says.

It’s that pivot we’ve heard so much about—it will last all of 5 minutes, but the media will kvell about it for days.

Nyet  Feb 28, 2017 • 6:01:44pm

There is nothing in the word “reverse” that identifies the perpetrators of the false flag. Then again, I don’t have the magic decoder ring some seem to possess.

259
Barefoot Grin  Feb 28, 2017 • 6:06:36pm

It’s amazing how it has happened: the Democrats were the union party; then globalization started to take hold and the American business community tacitly started to allow ever more workers (beyond the migrant field workers) in to take jobs from Americans in jobs like construction, especially to avoid union wages; then NAFTA happened and that probably increased the rate of entry (if the subsidy of American crops that put Mexican farmers out of work didn’t); and then you’d be hard pressed to find a non-immigrant working on a high-worth real estate development anywhere south of the old Mason Dixon line and probably north of that, too. And now Trump wants to get rid of these essential workers. Ok, I have some sympathy for the displaced American worker. But that ignores the host of realities we lefties complain about: by now these workers have been here for a couple of generations and some even have kids in college; they have been paying into the American tax system without the benefits in many cases and all the while sending money back to Mexico to at least help stabilize that economy; I’m tired and have to go to bed, but you see where I’m going with this. At once Trump is traumatizing millions who for all intents and purposes are American and also threatening the economic bases of core parts of our economy while ignoring that any gains he gets in the short term will turn into union activity or workers’ rights activities at some point. He’s cooked.

re: #99 Mike Lamb

Thank you. I’m black and grew up under Jim Crow, and I still would not deny that some blacks are racists. I know they are because I’ve met some of them in my 60+ years. I will not defend the likes of Ben Carson, Allen West, Omarosa Manigault, Larry Elder, Jesse Patterson, etc., when they help spread anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, and other assorted BS when they either openly agree with those who endorse it by either repeating their claims or by give their consent to it by remaining silent. That they’re black doesn’t figure into the equation when it comes to these types of things because when you’re wrong, you’re wrong.
