transcript of former Gov Steve Beshear’s rebuttal:
I am Steve Beshear.
I was Governor of Kentucky from 2007 to 2015. Now, I’m a private citizen. I’m here in Lexington, Kentucky, some 400 miles from Washington at a diner with some neighbors - Democrats and Republicans -where we just watched the president’s address. I am a proud Democrat, but first and foremost, I am a proud Republican, and Democrat and mostly, American. And like many of you, I am worried about the future of this nation.
Look, I grew up in Kentucky, in a small town called Dawson Springs. My dad and granddad were Baptist preachers. My family owned a funeral home and my wife Jane and I have been married for almost 50 years. I became governor at the start of the global recession and after eight years, we left things a lot better than we found them.
By being fiscally responsible, I even cut my own pay. We balanced our budget and turned deficits into surpluses without raising taxes. We cut our unemployment rate in half. We made huge gains in high school graduation rates and we found health coverage for over half a million Kentuckians.
We did that through trust and mutual respect. I listened. And I built partnerships with business leaders and with Republicans in our legislature. We put people first and politics second. The America I love allowed the small-town preacher’s kid to be elected governor. And it taught me to embrace people who are different from me, not vilify them. The America I love has always been about looking forward, not backward. About working together to find solutions, regardless of party instead of allowing our differences to divide us and hold us back.

Thanks for the coverage Lizard crew.
Still a tough thing to not listen to. Very disheartening. What have you done to yourself America? Sad.

As I pointed out during the Brian Williams mess, the press, and particularly the barking heads on “commentary” programs, are performers that work in the medium of sounding profound and earnest.
No profundity or earnestness is actually present.
Of course they’re praising this: their skillset is aesthetic, the play-act of sentiment, and that’s exactly the level at which they’re analyzing Trump. As bathetic, shallow gesturing that will get good Nielsen scores.

Has anyone noticed what Trump didn’t say? No reference to Russia or the allegations of Russian interference with election or his administration’s financial ties to Russia. Warnings are now popping up in Indiana.
Night time tornadoes are really the worst.
Right now we’re getting news like this though (from KSID, Sidney, NE)
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming Senate has passed a bill that would require doctors to offer an ultrasound to women seeking abortions.
The bill passed in a consent list Monday goes back to the House to consider a change the Senate made. Senators removed a provision requiring a doctor to obtain a signed confidential statement from the woman that she was offered an ultrasound.
Senators postponed a final vote Monday on another abortion bill, one that would make it a felony to sell, transfer or distribute tissue or cells from an aborted fetus.
The Wyoming Medical Society worries the bill would prohibit analysis of miscarried fetuses to determine why the miscarriage occurred.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers have given initial approval to a bill that would let drivers display opposition to abortion on their license plates.
Senators voted 37-7 on Tuesday to advance a bill that would require the state Department of Motor Vehicles to design “Choose Life” license plates. It still needs two more votes.
The plates would cost $5 more than standard license plates, and revenue would supplement federal funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Dan Watermeier of Syracuse, says the plates would signal support for all children.
Senators who oppose the measure say political language should not be on state-issued license plates. They offered amendments to change the message to phrases including “Stop Child Abuse” and “Rape Is No Laughing Matter.”

If I can see it coming, I can handle it. We are a few minutes from a big front rolling in from the northwest (ours usually come from the southwest), and the wind is blowing a gale. The windows are rattling. We’re still in the 60s, which worries me, so fingers crossed the bluff protects me here. Selfishly speaking! Best wishes to all in danger of blowing away tonight. Heading to bed before the power takes off without me.

After midnight here and the temp is 62F (was around 45F this morning and the thunderstorms started up).
It’s gonna be insane tonight.
I am old enough to remember when this hack excluded CNN from a press briefing for being “fake”. Now he is citing their poll?
In @cnn poll 78% of @POTUS #JointAddress watchers say positive, 69% say policies will move country in right direction, 69% more optimistic

Huh. I don’t normally check my tweet analytics, but I accidentally clicked on that and it says my tweets were seen 222K times in the month of February. I don’t know what that means other than I guess there are some folks reading my tweets out there?

The NWS normally tells people not to rely on the ability to hear or see a tornado or whatnot at night. If the NWS says “move” then one should do that.
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Ordinary citizens could carry guns into government meetings and teachers could bring them to school under a pair of bills that have passed the Wyoming Legislature.
The measures now head to Gov. Matt Mead to consider signing.
The Senate voted 20-10 on Monday to allow guns in any government meetings except those held in places where guns are generally prohibited, such as college campuses.
The Senate considered but decided not to change the bill to allow local governments to decide for themselves if they wanted guns at their public meetings. Opponents said confusion could result if some cities and counties allowed guns at meetings and others didn’t.
Teachers and other school officials would be allowed to carry guns in schools under a bill that passed the Senate 28-2.

Ammon Bundy Changes Testimony in Latest Takeover Trial https://t.co/odMI0VnQLi @karinapdx pic.twitter.com/PTF2Tk1mGm
— Courthouse News (@CourthouseNews) March 1, 2017
PORTLAND, Ore. (CN) - Cleared of charges related to the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Ammon Bundy on Tuesday testified on behalf of the second round of defendants that the occupation was planned well in advance of its Jan. 2, 2016 launch - the opposite of what he testified in his own trial.
For the first time, Bundy told the jury that he first discussed “taking a hard stand” by occupying the refuge on Dec. 16, 2015 - more than two weeks before the occupation. This past October, he testified that the occupation was spontaneous and said he first mentioned it during a meeting an hour before the Jan. 2, 2016, protest in support of local ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond.
Whatever story fits for the narrative.

Our regional NWS office in Wilmington OH already has us spotters on standby for tonight and tomorrow.
Looking at the radar, it appears I’ve got about 3 hours or so before it hits here.

Conservatives have wanted to privatise the NWS for a while now. It wouldn’t surprise me if they slip it in, but there are so many things to do:
-Round up everyone
-Kill the ACA
-Privatise Social Security
-Privatise the Veterans Administraion
-Crack down on marihuana (gotta fill those private prisons)
-Kill the EPA
-Kill the CFPB
They’ll get around to the NWS eventually.

As I think about the challenges the Dems and, indeed the country faces, I realize that the biggest problem we have is that the Founders set the country up in such a way that it could be taken over by a nosy minority of voters with no scruples, provided they were favorably placed, geographically.

I have a battery-operated weather radio which fires an alarm for warnings (including tsunami warnings, just what I need on the Inland Coast).
The problem is the weather station to my west (Angora) is too far for the radio to pick up most days (about sixteen miles line-of-sight). The weather station to my east (Oshkosh), forty miles away comes in fine but storms have already passed me and they don’t trigger alarms for our area.

I wonder how much of the pundits’ fawning has to do with wanting to believe that we’re not as fucked as it seems. It seems like over and over they cut him slack, only to have the Lucy Of Reality pull the football away again. In a couple days, he’ll try putting in place a version of the Muslim ban he hopes will be Judge Proof. His AG will continue moving the DoJ from fighting voter suppression to supporting it, and jailing more people, mostly likely people of color. His EPA Administrator will be doing everything he can to allow as much damage to the environment as possible. And Bannon will still be pushing Blood and Soil nationalism.
Meanwhile he will be enriching himself with money paid by peopple and countries specifically to gain his favor, as we all watch.
re: #150 teleskiguy
Our own jeffreyw was in that big red splotch on the map. Downstairs he was trying to do a play-by-play. His power went out and was subsequently restored, and he alluded to a lot of damage very nearby his location. I’ve seen reports that one person has died in southern Illinois tonight because of tornadoes.
