Site question - for Charles?
Is it possible to add a “cancel comment” function?
More than a few times I have inadvertently hit “reply” or “quote” and can’t clear the comment box except by deleting.
Its easy(er) with a keyboard/trackpad, but on my tablet, I have to backspace character-by-character - can there be a “clear” button for the comment box, or is there some technical barrier?

What’s amusing about this, in a sick sort of way is, if she says the CBO scored the health care takeaway bill, she’s saying that Congress just passed a bill that will cost oodles of money and take health insurance away from 24 million people.

Someone who tweets should point that out to her, if they haven’t already.

Yeah, well… it’s The Donald: the man scarcely - if ever - remembers what position he’s taken from one day to the next: I’ll believe in Trump’s support for a single-payer healthcare system when I see the White House compose a plan, send it to Congress, and push for it like President Obama did,

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Parents seeking to adopt children in Texas could soon be rejected by state-funded or private agencies with religious objections to them being Jewish, Muslim, gay, single, or interfaith couples, under a proposal in the Republican-controlled Legislature.

Five other states have passed similar laws protecting faith-based adoption organizations that refuse to place children with gay parents or other households on religious grounds — but Texas’ rule would extend to state-funded agencies. Only South Dakota’s is similarly sweepingly.

The bill had been scheduled for debate and approval Saturday in the state House, but lawmakers bogged down with other matters. It now is expected to come up next week.

Republican sponsors of Texas’ bill say it is designed to support the religious freedom of adoption agencies and foster care providers. Many of the agencies and are private and faith-based but receive state funds.

But opponents say it robs children of stable homes while funding discrimination with taxpayer dollars.

“This would allow adoption agencies to turn away qualified, loving parents who are perhaps perfect in every way because the agency has a difference in religious belief,” said Catherine Oakley, senior legislative counsel for the Human Rights Campaign. “This goes against the best interest of the child.”

The bill also blatantly violates the Constitution, Oakley added.

Lubbock’s “Mr. Conservative,” Dr. Donald May, is in no doubt:

[Embedded content]

In 2014, Don challenged Representative Randy (“Baby killer”) Neugebauer (R-Real Estate) in the primary, on the grounds that Neugebauer was not conservative enough.

“It would be great” if Mr. May could learn a bit about the English language (emigrate, not immigrate, you doofus) and also to proofread his screeds before posting them. (demonstrating if force/out God-given rights.) Better yet, he should just STFU.

Yeah, well… it’s The Donald: the man scarcely - if ever - remembers what position he’s taken from one day to the next: I’ll believe in Trump’s support for a single-payer healthcare system when I see the White House compose a plan, send it to Congress, and push for it like President Obama did,

I’m wondering if neither the CIA nor the Russians have anything to do with the MacronLeaks hack: it would be a stroke of genius for the En Marche! team to have hacked themselves: making sure that none of the released documents are meaningful in any case (and anything embarrassing can be dismissed as a fake) - the last-minute “release” gives them enough time to gin up outrage (the blackout period keeping too-close examination of the hack at bay until after the election), and tar Le Pen and the FN with the stink of Russian malfeasance/interference to go with the malodor of Donald Trump’s endorsement. Almost certainly wrong, but an amusing scenario nonetheless.

Question—where you ask for % of career in politics, are you just talking about national offices held? State offices? State legislatures? For example—Mark Sanford was governor for 8 years as well as his terms in the House before and after; Tim Scott was in the state legislature, etc. And what if they were in local politics (county council etc) while also working in the private sector?

So… true confession time. I’m a tech director at a megachurch. I’ve directed loads of faith healing services over my years. I know what shots to take and what shots to not take to “tell the story.” I watch people intently. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a legit faith healing. People get pumped up from adrenaline. When a preacher picks a person in a wheelchair to walk again, they aren’t going to go for the C5 quadriplegic. They are going to go for someone with painful joint and mobility issues. Something adrenaline can help temporarily get you out of that wheelchair and moving.

So of course my camera guys are going to grab that, but the shots I’m not picking are the ones where I tell a camera guy to track the person after the focus is off of them. They end up back in their wheelchair, or back the next day same as before. But I watch them closely. Because deep inside I want to believe. But every day I know more and more it’s all almost certainly bullshit.

And it’s sad because they won’t say anything because in their mind they think that their faith is lacking and they are ashamed — and they’ve lost their healing.

It’s really despicable, and so am I for keeping this job. It eats at me, but I make excuses like people who work for the state lottery board don’t play the lottery, or the skinny little people working at the ice cream shops don’t eat their own store’s products.

Maybe I should write a book one day. Not that it’d make a difference. Those who’d really need to read it would dismiss it and me as a tool of Satan.

Anyway, TL;DR — Mike Pence is full of shit. I know it. I live it.

One of the many things that makes the Trump presidency unprecedented is that some members of Congress, as well as some ethicists, legal experts, psychiatrists and scholars, are already talking about possible paths to impeachment or how to remove the President from office through the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. My guest, Evan Osnos, has written an article in the current edition of The New Yorker titled “How Trump Could Get Fired.” It examines these efforts and considers the feasibility of ending Trump’s presidency.

Transcript and audio. Osnos gives a coherent picture of what impeachment really means — not a criminal (necessarily) but a political determination of unfitness for office — and his conclusion is that Trump’s destiny rests on the 2018 election. He talks a lot of sense but I still think “health reasons” will intervene earlier than that. He mentions the 25th Amendment possibilities too.

re: #115 weave

All I can suggest is that you walk away from them. Tell them what you like or nothing, it doesn’t matter because those running that place don’t matter.

Instead? Find a small parish someplace, one that’s got maybe 50 to 100 people in it who are really trying to do God’s work. It’s easy enough to find them - they’re feeding people without making them listen to a “soup kitchen sermon”. Visiting them in jail and praying with them - if that’s what _they_ want. Giving blankets and clothing away without strings. Helping people through thier grief. Sharing with them their joys.

You know as well as all of us that the megachurches exist only to enrich a few with the suffering of the many. But the little churches that can’t even afford to pay a preacher full time? That’s where you can find the Spirit with the people. Like my little church tomorrow.

Remember what repentence really means - changing direction. We all can do that.

He was imprisoned for unknown reasons. His arrest came after he served four years behind bars on charges related to the hacking of the private intelligence firm Stratfor, which exposed how the firm spied on activists on behalf of corporations. Last year, Brown won the National Magazine Award for prison columns, for a series of columns he wrote for The Intercept.

Quite true: even leaving aside any other considerations of “fitness”, Donald Trump and his Administration (and/or family) have to be among the most blatantly and flagrantly “corrupt” in this nation’s history. And that’s “corrupt” in the sense of flouting/ignoring normal standards of ethical behavior wrt to personal financial enrichment while in public office. It seriously takes a lot to make Grant’s or Harding’s Administrations look like models of probity, but just by occupying the Oval Office, Donald Trump has managed it.

But yes, impeachment is as much (if not more) a political issue than a criminal one: and as long as there is Republican control of Congress, we can be assured that nothing will be done about Trump’s egregious self-enrichment and commercialization of the Presidency. Unless and until it threatens their seats. Maybe.

Absolutely. What MIGHT speed up attempts to impeach would be a significant further deterioration in Trump’s polls (<35% approval perhaps) that leads to a significant number of Republicans calculating that impeachment is their best chance of political survival. I’m not holding my breath for that, but it’s not entirely off the table.

Oh, and yes, he totally deserves it. Emoluments, certainly. Etc.

I wrote here before how I am a full grade, junior high, senior high schooled Catholic system product. In 8th grade three guys I knew fairly well left our Catholic school to go to the Seminary to study to become Catholic priests.

Several years after I had graduated high school I was at a summer job my brother gave me while I was in college. One night my brother (shop foreman) came by to introduce another summer maintenance crew guy and sure enough, it was Greg, one of the three that set out to be priests.

I hadn’t seen him in 6 years or so so we had a lot of catching up to do. First topic up was what happened to your goal to be a priest? A week of yakking later I had the full story of a lot of really questionable stuff going on with the priests, the students and the local citizens, both male and female. All of this was way before the real expose of many a Catholic priest came at the turn of the 80s into the 90s.

He left the Seminary program really confused and bitter about the whole process after about three years in. He swore he was now a 100% non-believer atheist. That was a big turnaround. Of the three guys that set out from 8th grade he was the best bet to make the program.

The other two guys? One is the long-time mayor of an Ohio city. The last I saw of the third he was completely changed and I believed he married the lovely young black woman he was dating at the time, which in the mid to late 70s was still pretty verboten in smallish city Ohio.

So, the batting average of the guys set out to a life in The Church that I knew was 0%.

It happens.

It didn’t get a lot of attention, but I see that the nominee, the second nominee, for Sec of the Army dropped out of the nomination process.

Mark Green withdraws his nomination for Army secretary

This should be encouraging. The bigoted wingnuts will run when enough light is shed on them.

I was surprised that the program went for 45 minuted without ever mentioning the emoluments clause. Seems like that may be the most obvious offense that the Trump admin is guilty of.

To us it is. But for the GOP, the only impeachable offense is basement-level approval ratings.

Good news: my rep (Louise Slaughter, NY-25) is a trained microbiologist and among the most educated scientists in the house.

Bad news: she’s 84 and our local Dems are a splintered mess who lack a clear successor for her.

Evening Lizardim from the beautiful wild north country. Mrs. Fish and I had a glorious day at the comic-con, and yes, meeting The Doctor was every bit as thrilling as we thought it would be. I’ll post that later when I get a chance to unwind a bit from a very exhausting day. How go things among the lizardfolk?

He was amazing. We also got to see a Q&A session with John Barrowman, who must be the most fucking hilarious man alive. Seriously. If you ever get a chance to go see him, DO IT.

I had to miss his panel at comic con as we had to line up for Jason Isaacs. Mr. Isaacs was prickly and brilliant and he told of how he created his L. Malfoy costume for Chris Columbus. Initially It looked like a Ministry ofMagic City man’s pin striped suit.

A fair trade, but try to get in to see Barrowman sometime. He is an amazing human being and so theatrical.
