From the “that is some shady shit” file, I went out for dinner tonight with some friends. When it came time to pay I noticed I had two receipts which showed the same grand total of $18.55 but different suggested tip amounts:

Not only am I anal about getting my tip calculations correct, I am also someone who always tips on the PRETAX total, not the grand total.

Of course I posted on a dead thread - so to repeat - some comic relief from Australia

Absolutely no answer to the question in regards to the Moore escape to Australia - but if you would like some relief from US politics, Australian politics at the moment is in the laugh or cry category.

Politicians are being thrown out of parliament basically because they have been found to be dual citizens of Australia and one other country (illegal under the constitution) & in the latest episode of this saga a replacement for one of these folks in the Senate may be ineligible because she worked for the Federal government after losing the election to the ineligible person. (To be eligible for election you cannot be working for the Federal government).

And the same sex marriage vote is advisory only - however legislation will probably be introduced. Tony Abbott who is a resounding NO vote represents an electorate which went 80% YES, while a number of members who are big YES voters come from electorates where the vote was a resounding NO.

The “advisory” vote was expensive, rather pointless, matched the opinion polls and appears to have no impact on how MPs will vote.

As I noted down one floor, on the preceding floor downstairs from that I posted some links to the latest kerfuffle with Pauline Hanson’s party.

I can’t really relate to Australia - never been there. I see some TV show from there - the Aussie version of Masterchef is much better than the American version.

Australia has given us Rupert Murdoch and Ken Ham. What does that tell me about Australia?

I’m not sure how that works since I always use cash for restaurants.

I don’t pay the suggested tip (I’ve never seen that in a restaurant around here) - my tips are considerably above what those suggest you should tip.

I usually tip higher myself but tonights service was not worth it: Almost 40 minutes to get drinks. I ordered an entree and asked for a single topping to not be included but it still was and my friend had to basically order an appetizer twice because 20 minutes after he made the first order the server couldn’t figure out what the hell happened to it and had to submit it again.

Oh, and when we finally did get our food, it was lukewarm.

My sister was a waitress while she lived in Minneapolis so I know the crap that they have to go through for shitty wages. If other aspects of the meal were screwed up I can see being mad about the tip, but thinking that it’s an unforgivable dirty trick by the restaurant is kind of a harsh judgement over 20 cents. A lot of people (myself included) tip based on the after tax amount. I usually tip 20% and then round the total up to the next full dollar. I try to tip cash at the table so that the restaurant manager has less control over the tip.

Edit: I see now that you had other major problems.

They’ll rationalize it in one of 3 ways:

1. ”If it’s all true, then he’ll be removed from office or forced to resign and Ivey will appoint another Republican to take his place.”

2. ”It’s all a bunch of bull and I’d be wrong to vote against him based upon lies paid for by Democrats!”

Tribalism, nihilism, and just plain assholism. And yeah, I think they’d elect a serial killer, or at least loudly defend him.

Honestly, we’re getting close to the point where they’ll elect someone who’ll wear a Pepe pin or a swastika pin on the campaign trail. I’m a bit surprised there haven’t been more talk-radio/Fox News screamers running for office — sure, the big earners like Limbaugh and Hannity wouldn’t want the pay cut, but the ones who are on the low end of the scale, who won’t ever make it to prime time or have lost their spot at the top? You’d think O’Reilly, Savage, Coulter, Ingraham, or Huckabee would already be demanding their place in the Senate…

Exactly why I push so hard when I see someone suggest that might need something of the sort here.

A military coup in just about any nation is the ultimate suspension of the rule of law. In any nation where the military is subservient to the civilian government (such as ours), a coup is an unmitigated disaster for civil rights.

The only time a military should be in charge of a country is after it is defeated in a war and occupied (to provide stability and structure, or dare I say that term that sets wingnuts off: nation-building).

Technically, he’s more an ephebophile; there weren’t any charges that he went after children younger than 14 and most of them were older. But, in common parlance, people often use the term pedophile for an adult who prefers those younger than the age of consent.

Hebephile is another excuse, just like pedophile. However we describe it, the fact remains that Roy Moore is a rapist of little girls and a candidate for the US Senate.

It seems my friend in Nairobi was right - we were chatting yesterday and she was telling me that she was hearing rumors floating around last night that a coup was going down in Zimbabwe. She was hearing this from internet chatter….she has friends in the Harare area.

It’s long past time for Mugabe to go. Apparently what set this off was that Mugabe sacked the VP and was making plans for his wife, Grace Mugabe (his former mistress, btw) to take over; he was trying to create a dynasty, something like North Korea.

And the Zimbabwean military has obviously rejected that idea, and rather dramatically I’d say.

18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

I am not sure that what’s going on here fits the definition of treason. There is that question of enemies (we are not at war with Russia) or giving aid and comfort.

On the other hand, the Espionage Act of 1917 originally applied to giving information about the military to foreign powers. That was changed many times over the years but was eventually amended in 1948 and moved from Title L (War and National Defense) to Title XVIII (Crimes and Criminal Procedure).

I think a conviction under the Espionage Act would be just fine.

The in-house system knows the amount if the tax and calculates on the pretax.
