And also the fuckers going after Dave Weigel who is under attack from trumpsters both US and UKIP. He reported on Farage’s visit to CPAK in 2015 where Bannon and others fell in love with him. Now some douche is going after Weigel.

I think it matters that Chucky C. thinks he has a long career ahead of him. If he gets blown out and damaged by the likes of an old experienced goat like Stone all the better because Stone is at the end of his career.

A ruined and discredited, beaten by his own, Chucky C would be a good thing.

I think it’s clear by now that Trump’s claim that he could shoot someone on Fifth Ave and not lose support also applies to ever being charge with a crime. The only way that this administration will be successfully scrubbed from the Earth is if he’s impeached and the articles of impeachment section on specific crimes is thicker than a phone book. The level of corruption and abuse of power on display would make Nixon green with envy.

Trump is so nuts that he’s internalized the solution to the old is the glass half empty or half full paradox. The glass is always totally full. Half of it is full of liquid and the other half is full of air. Same with arenas. Half, or a third, or a fourth, is full of people, the rest is full of empty seats. Totally full. Plus, outside, the streets, whether there’s anyone on them or not, are full of potential worshipers or at least full of sidewalk space.

Liquified gas train wrecks are ER porn. The ends of the tanks often travel a half mile or more when they blow. Spectacular and terrifying. There is a video, I think from Mexico City, of firemen on truck ladders spraying water on an LNG tank that was on fire when it BLEVEd.

Everybody turned into torchsicles. That was from the sixties or seventies.

Those fires aren’t attacked that way anymore. Now, it’s just stand off and let ‘em burn. And it’s not just an LNG problem. Recent (last two to five years) train wrecks involving crude oil that BLEVEd are notorious and have been used by pipeline companies trying to get crude transferred by subsurface steel.

Never personally experienced one, but as I used to spend a lot of time at old antique tractor shows, there were always stories from some of the old-timers about boiler explosions from the giant steam tractors. Those boys push ‘em to their limits, and sometimes beyond, and someone winds up paying a price.

Hair Furor just can’t seem to catch a break these days….
Trump says he and Trudeau disagree on trade deficit. U.S. stats seem to be on the PM’s side
Despite Trump’s insistence the U.S. has a trade deficit with Canada, statistics from the website of the office of the U.S. Trade Representative — the office handling NAFTA negotiations — paint an opposite portrait.

WASHINGTON—U.S. President Donald Trump regaled a rally of supporters Friday night with a story about a disagreement with Canada’s prime minister, then sprinkled his tale with some questionable statistics about international trade.

Trump told a partisan crowd in Florida that he and Justin Trudeau had a closed-door debate about trade balances.

He described it during the part of his speech where he blasted bad trade deals as one of the reasons he won last year’s election, and reiterated his promise to either cancel or renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

He lamented a $71 billion trade deficit with Mexico, then added that there’s also a deficit with Canada. That’s where he described his exchange with Trudeau — who apparently kept telling Trump the U.S. has no trade deficit with Canada.

“I like the prime minister very much. Prime Minister Trudeau. Nice guy. Good guy. No, I like him. But we had a meeting … He said, ‘No, no, you have a trade surplus.’ I said, ‘No we don’t.’ He said, ‘No, no you have a trade surplus,’” Trump told the Florida crowd.

“(Trudeau) said, ‘I’m telling you that Canada has a deficit with the United States.’ I told my people — in front of a lot of people — I said, ‘Go out and check’.”

He said his staff found Trudeau left out some key details, pertaining to trade in goods: “(Trudeau) was right. Except he forgot two categories: Lumber timber; and energy. Other than that, he was right. When you add them all together, we actually have a $17 billion deficit with Canada.”

Salon: Trump’s pick for Census position wrote a book saying “competitive elections are bad for America”

Thomas Brunell, a Texas professor with zero government experience, is the Trump administration’s favorite to be named as deputy secretary at the U.S. Census Bureau, a vital position that will impact the 2020 census as well as forthcoming elections.
“If true, it signals an effort by the administration to politicize the Census,” Terri Ann Lowenthal, former co-director of the Census Project, an organization that tracks the census, told Politico. “It’s very troubling.”
Brunell, a registered Republican, authored a book in 2008 titled, “Redistricting and Representation: Why Competitive Elections Are Bad for America” and has testified on behalf of Republican efforts to redraw congressional districts, Politico reported.
While Brunell has criticized partisan gerrymandering, his work has been cited by GOP redistricting efforts “and he appeared as an expert witness to defend GOP-led states in lawsuits over potential gerrymandering,” according to Politico.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly made baseless claims that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election, and he established an election fraud commission in order to crackdown on the so-called issue, but has dealt with it’s own corruption problems.
Brunnell was originally considered to be appointed as the census director, which is a job that requires a confirmation by the Senate, Politico reported. However, after the administration was criticized, they ultimately decided not to nominate him and instead are looking to hire him as the agency’s deputy secretary, which does not require a Senate confirmation, as soon as this week.

That’s not a pipe dream, that’s a guarantee. It’ll start as brush wars in Africa and South Asia, but it’s a real thing. In the western US, there won’t be conflict, just water refugees fleeing west Texas. Anyone in the US depending on the Ogallala for potable water is at risk.

Dr Lizardo  Dec 10, 2017 • 3:08:15am

We had a little earthquake here overnight. I didn’t even wake up; it happened at about 0400 local time. According to Czech seismologists, the event was a 3.6 Mw, depth of 10 km and the epicenter was a village called Markvartovice, not far from where I live.

Here’s a local news blurb about the earthquake, via GoogleTranslate:

Many people in sleep recorded a wound, the sound of trembling objects and, above all, a flutter.

For example, people in Karvina, where they are accustomed to similar bumps, have shaken one of the other manifestations of devastating black coal mining in some of the local shafts. The drifts of the undermined rocks manifest themselves in such blunders.

Sunday’s shock, however, did not cause a mine shock, but a classic earthquake. It was recorded by all seismological stations not only in the region but throughout the country. In this locality the earthquake is considered very rare.

Experts can help by completing the macroseismic questionnaire

Epicenter in the Hlučín region

The Mediterranean European Seismological Center said the shocks had a magnitude of 3.6. (Note: The magnitude of the earthquake is expressed by the magnitude of the magnitude, which is determined, for example, by the seismometrically determined maximum earthquake displacements of earth.) There are several magnitude scales that are transformed by empirical formulas, one created by Charles Francis Richter. then so-called magnitude magnitude according to the Richter scale).

According to available information, the epicenter of the earthquake should be located at Hlučín, in the locality between Šilheřovice, Markvartovice and Bolatice, at a depth of about ten kilometers underground. The movement of the country has captured the stations of the Czech Regional Seismic Network in Ostrava-Krásný Poli, as well as all other nearby ones.

Damage to property or injury is not reported, but people write about hundreds of facebook contributions on the Sunday morning earthquake.

People in the Internet talks describe that the shock is terrified and how a short twitch has shaken things in the home. They also describe that some items fell from the shelves, including shelves themselves. Animals, especially dogs, responded to shake.

“I woke up fears, the whole house shuddered, I was afraid something went wrong, I checked the whole household if there was no harm,” said Lada Stein of Hlučín.

Miroslav Buhlová of Bohuslavice described the feelings as follows: “It was very strange, first of all I thought I was shivering in the cold, but dogs started barking outside and I learned what it was like in the morning.

Šárka Tomášková said in her paper: “We live in Polance. A friend walked around the house to see if he could see anything.

Another woman wrote, “Yeah, I felt it, and I went through the whole house. I thought the roof fell. I was pretty scared!!!” Hana Kratochvílová from Ostrava-Zábřeh said she felt a weaker shock in the places where she lived: “She shuddered the bed. Since then I’ve been awake.”

The shocks of the earth were felt in Ostrava-Radvanice. Iveta Míčková on Facebook wrote that it seemed as if a car had hit their house.

Monika Rejtová lives in the center of Ostrava and she also recorded the earthquake. “It was four o’clock in the morning. The whole house was shaking, the glasses and plates floating in the kitchen. I had a heart in my throat”, she told her experience.

Expert Commentary on Today’s Earthquake

Jana Pazdírková, Institute of Earth Physics, Masaryk University Brno
We have been monitoring the area of North Moravia and Silesia for over 20 years. At the end of this year, we will issue a current map of seismic activity in this area. Sunday morning shake was extraordinary. No other stronger phenomenon has ever been seen in this area. Poor earthquakes are sometimes in Opava, near Karlova Studánka or Šumperk. This time the earthquake came from ten to twelve kilometers deep beneath Šilheřovice. So it can be assumed that, even though coal had previously been harvested in this area, this earthquake had no connection with mining activities. This is precisely the depth from which the earthquake originated. The last strongest earthquake was recorded in northern Moravia in 2012. It had an outbreak in Jeseníky, but it was significantly weaker than the earthquake of Sunday 10 December 2017. Regarding the question of the possible increase of seismic activity in northern Moravia and Silesia, I do not think it should manifest. In the Czech Republic, similar phenomena appear from time to time, but rather in Western Bohemia. It is true, however, that we also observe occasional occurrences in northern Moravia and Silesia.

Because of the shocks, the firemen went out
Several exits were due to earthquakes and Moravian-Silesian firefighters. That morning they received 20 phone calls.

“People complained about the shocks. We went to Ostrava-Pustkovce, Hlučín, and to the hospital in Fife. There were also people from Ostrava-Výškovice. We had roughly ten exits, but no interventions were carried out by our firemen, “said spokesman of the Moravian-Silesian fire brigade Jakub Kozák.

“At this moment, we monitor the situation with the mayors of the” affected “municipalities, especially with the mayor of the Kravaře ORP, at the strategic level (without intervention of the PO units), and no further damage has occurred,” added Kozák.

Several dozens of seismological stations are located all over Ostrava, which continuously record the bumps of the earth’s surface. Most of them are in the field of active coal mines in the Karviná region, but others are in other localities, including the Beskids. Pictured is the station in Vyšní Lhoty under the Beskydy Mountain.

I didn’t see any mention of it on the USGS site, so I reported it.

We do a piss poor job of maintaining the infrastructure needed to gain access even where fresh water is plentiful (e.g. Flint, Michigan) and there are many parts of the world where much of the water supply is lost due to pipeline leaks.

But yeah, we would rather go to war than buckle down and spend money on something that does not produce a direct corporate profit.

Trump insisting on a Diet Coke in 1940.

I don’t know if this was posted elsewhere, from Forbes back in April :
Why Is Diet Soda So Bad For Your Brain?
[…]

The part that is surprising involved the potential effects of diet drinks on the brain. A study in the journal Stroke showed a correlation between drinking diet soda and both stroke and dementia: people who drank at least one diet soda a day were three times as likely to have a stroke or develop dementia as those who avoided the beverages.

And Trump drinks 12 of these a day.

And goodnight, all. BLIZZARD 2017!!! has disappeared and we will be in the low seventies by next week.

She Who Must Be Obeyed is doing the December harp thing this month (good earner!) and I have been given the honey-do list of stripping the cabinet doors in the kitchen.

I’ve done the first two, which have 67 years of paint on them, and the only thing I can say is Fuck My Life.

Night all, sweet dreams

Late…but maybe some do-it-yourselfers will like the info.

Have you ever heard of Peel-A-Way stripper? They make several different formulas. The one for paint is ideal, especially old lead based paints, etc. It’s basically caustic soda in a paste form. You goop it on, place the special receiver paper on it and smooth it into the paste. Wait 24 hours and then you lift the paper away and there is a good chance if applied properly all the paint will be stuck to the paper. Then you neutralize the wood surface with mild acid (white vinegar works well), let it all dry, do a bit of sanding to take down the surface ‘fuzz’ and you are good to go.

If there is any paint still on the surface, it is probably able to be scraped right after the paper is removed, or let it dry and then bump it with a heat gun. The soda takes any integrity out of the remaining paint.

Just make sure you wear gloves and have no skin exposed…the soda will burn the skin.

It is a time saver, and it does have a bit of odor, but it is not like having the nasty chemical strippers. On some of my woodwork, the paint literally looked like a reverse of the woodwork…you could see the details of the trim it was that thick.

I buy it trough Sherwin Williams stores here in Columbus. They carry small containers. I used three 5-gallon buckets to strip most of the very old paint in This Old House.

Now all I have to do is get all of it refinished.

Someone should ask Trump what the hell he did to make the economy so great. President Obama actually signed a stimulus bill, saved the auto industry and passed the ACA, all of which helped the economy. Trump has done nothing and his party is working on transferring wealth from the working class to the mega rich through tax cuts. Ryan is chomping at the bit to destroy Social Security and Medicare because of the deficits that will result from the GOP tax plan.

One of North Korea’s most recent nuclear tests may have set off aftershocks so powerful that they moved the Earth’s crust, the U.S. Geological Survey said Saturday.

“When you have a large nuclear test, it moves the Earth’s crust around the area, and it takes a while for it to fully subside. We’ve had a few of them since the [September] nuclear test.”

“The territory north and east of the Rio Grande is very important to the Mexican people,” explained a PNA spokesperson. “Before American settlers showed up and implemented slavery, Mexico oversaw this land. Then, President Polk sent his armies to invade the rest of these Mexican territories, and force the country to give up California, New Mexico, most of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado. We may soon recognize these states as part of Mexico too.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says that this is a new approach to Mexican-US relations, and hopes it will help ease the tension between the two countries over security and immigration.

“We understand that the Mexican state of Texas is a sacred place for many large-buckled Americans, but they can rest assured that a two-state solution or a wall was not feasible,” explained Abbas.

“Besides, most people in Texas speak Spanish.”

Guess what, we have a political and electoral system in which this man did not need a majority or even a plurality.

Thanks to our Constitution, we are stuck with this. Theoretically (though unlikely in practice), someone could win the presidency with only 30% of the vote.

His supporters wanted an anti-politician, someone who was the polar opposite everything a career politician is and stands for. Someone who is non-PC for the sake of pissing off liberals. Someone who denies facts and promotes an ideology and a worldview.

These traits are not seen as faults, they are selling points. Which is why it is pointless and even counter-productive to try and criticize the President to a supporter or argue with them about his administration and its goals and activities.

That is probably true, but it is working for him among his supporters so far, and Faux News and the other cheering chorus media reinforce this view for him. If the court jesters refuse to tell the truth, then how is the King to learn that he is deluded? I remember when the GOP were about to panic in 2000, fearing that Gore would win the EC while losing the popular vote. They were trying to work out how to challenge the legitimacy of the election.

Of course, when Bush lost the popular vote and won the EC, it became The Wisdom Of The Founders. And it will stay like that till a Republican loses the EC while winning the popular vote, because Republicanism is about POWER, not Principle.

St. Paul just lost one of it’s best lamp stores (John’s Antiques) to what has become the ‘dining district’ just west of the Xcel Center. I bought a couple of shades there for some old traditional floor lamps and had them rewire one of the lamps. They had a whole room full of shades. I agree that it’s best to shop in person if possible. I’ll miss that store.

It’s not really a big deal, but I got it from my friend’s father who passed away.

I was dining at this really cool retro themed restaurant in Charleston

therarebit.com

& was sitting next to a very similar lamp with the correct shade!!

At the Rarebit

The shade that came with it is just wrong.

Nice little MCM lamp!

I bet you can find a good vintage lighting store in your area. If so, have them check the socket and wiring/plugs for safety. Not expensive to change out either.

I have started re-wiring on my own after so many. Not hard to do.

Good luck! The hunt is fun.

I remember playing games at the schoolyard with buddies in conditions like this, some of the best games I have ever played. Get tackled, it does not hurt and if it does, pack some snow on it and keep going.

I know that the coming attempt to downsize national monuments got a lot of coverage lately, but I don’t remember seeing any coverage of this hypocrisy:

BILLINGS, Mont. — U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has closely followed his boss’ playbook, encouraging mining and drilling on public lands and reducing the size of national monuments that President Donald Trump called a “massive land grab” by his Democratic predecessors.

Except, that is, in Montana.

In Zinke’s home state, the former congressman who has long harbored higher political ambitions is recommending Trump create a new national monument out of the forests bordering Glacier National Park, to the disappointment of a company that wants to drill for natural gas there.

A couple hundred miles away, where rocky bluffs line the Missouri River, he decided to leave intact a 590-square-mile monument that for 16 years has stirred the kind of impassioned local opposition that Zinke cited in justifying changes to monuments elsewhere.

And he wants to curb mining along Montana’s border with Yellowstone National Park. That could discourage development of two proposed mines that supporters say would offer higher paying jobs than tourism.

The decision was based on Zinke’s belief that “some places are too precious to mine,” his spokeswoman said last month.

I hope the WaPo responds to this attack like they did last month to the attempted ratfuck by Project Veritas over Roy Moore’s victims. I don’t think that the WaPo is willing to put up with this crap any more.

Ha. WaPo posted their story last night with many digs at Trump.

Some places. Right.

Kind of like… how Exxon lobbied heavily for state laws that allow frakking even in places where cities/counties tried to prohibit it, denying that it’s environmentally unsound, or unsightly, or damaged their property values, how dare these NIMBY liberals try to inhibit economic progress, and bankrolled defense against lawsuits alleging such. But when another oil company wanted to frak near Rex Tillerson’s house, he was lead plaintiff in the residents’ lawsuit insisting that it was environmentally unsound, unsightly, and damaged their property values.

Everytime I see a question that includes “race” I know that the question is set-up to provide programmed responses.

“Race” really is a social construct. Doesn’t make it “not real”, as we have a lot of social constructs we have invented (religion, law, etc.) and they are real. But they are constructed for our purposes. “Race” is one of those things, only real in what we want from it.

Something similar to “ethnic”.

If only that question had been worded differently, I wonder if the answers would have changed much.

Note that the underlying tone is all about Europe. If we asked say Central Americans this question I wonder how that would turn out too.

The core of RATM has worked with more talented front men that just about any band - first with Zack, then Cornell, and now Chuck D and B-Real.

Though they’ve all done some pretty fierce music, Zack still takes the prize as the front man for that band.

Only 7 percent of Americans say that growing diversity makes their country a worse place to live.

That’s less than a quarter of the number who say that in the UK and Germany.

We cannot begin to compare a nation of immigrants with countries with centuries or millennia-old cultures and traditions.

And also keep in mind that despite the survey figures, Germany has successfully absorbed over a million refugees over the past two years.
