It’s astounding that the story is the Nunes Memo didn’t work as a political maneuver and not that Republicans were willing to destroy the FBI and betray the country.

The US government is staffed and run by professionals whose careers span more than one Presidency. They are expected to maintain institutions and processes. These people are often specialists and cannot just be replaced with someone whose political views are more closely in line with the current administration.
Naturally they are expected to serve and obey the Chief Executive but they are also aware that the current one will not be the only one they serve in the course of their service.
That does not make them Deep State. It makes them civil servants.
America elected a President with no history of public service, and a history of private business that is generally unknown as he has declined to release his tax returns.

I caught the last 20 minutes or so of This American Life today. The story was about a Louisiana state lawmaker who was asked by her parish sheriff to sponsor legislation banning toy guns from schools because with school shootings up he doesn’t want his officers mistakenly called to a school and shooting a kid with a toy gun by mistake. Seems pretty simple, right? The lawmaker is a republican woman who carries a loaded Glock in her purse and had a reputation as strong 2A advocate. But when gun folks heard about it they turned on her. It became the talk of gun rights radio shows and even the NRA’s 24-hour cable channel. Ultimately she had to withdraw her bill and she’s now labeled a RINO, all over an attempt to protect innocent kids from mistakenly getting shot. I won’t tell you why because I’m sure you can guess why the gun nuts (mostly GOP now) opposed her.
I know there are responsible gun owners and enthusiasts here. I’m not one. My purpose isn’t to criticize gun ownership here, but rather to point to the extreme paranoia on the right and its close relationship to the 2A issue. (The reporter tried to draw an equivalency to liberals and abortion, by the way….)

I too find it hard to believe that the general public gives a second thought to Afghanistan.
This is the problem with a perpetual war - it has its own life.
Empires of the past were in perpetual war, and in hindsight it is easy to see that such things eventually leach the life out of a society, but while embedded at the time an ordinary person won’t recognize the problem.
In some ways the US today is less influential than it was just 10 years ago. This has to do with Trump, yes, but also the simple fact that we’re becoming more caught up in our own slow-boil angst and less inclined to take on global projects.
And part of the reason for the latter is very much to do with Afghanistan and the so-called War on Terror.

LOL funny how FT was mentioning how right wing propaganda gets people to believe what they want to believe. Someone I know commented on a stupid video claiming Clinton gave NK nukes, Obama Iran, and HRC gave Russia uranium. “Hard to deny if your a leftist” was my acquaintance’s comment and literally right below him was a response by a former guy in the military who dealt with nukes basically saying that it was all bs and you’re incredibly stupid if you believe this crap. Created by an anonymous person who aligns themselves with the alt-right, a radical movement that propagates racist, misogynistic, xenophobic and various other hateful ideologies, the group campaigned against Star Wars: The Last Jedi in December for the film’s inclusion of female characters and “men being portrayed as idiots,” according to Huffington Post.

Back from the Rockwall Democratic lunch. We have two Democrats running in our primary this year, which is two more people than we had running against John Ratcliffe in the last two elections. The fourth district of Texas, which he represents, is the 5th most conservative district in the nation, and John is the most conservative voter in Congress.
One of the candidates is Lander Bethel. He’s a Presbyterian minister whose for more spending on education and health care, and reining in military spending. His big story was getting to sit next to Ratcliffe on the way back to Texas after they stopped attempting to repeal Obamacare back in April of last year, and having to explain to Ratcliffe what “entitlement” actually meant.
The other is Catherine Krantz. Util about four years ago, she was living in Mexico, working for nonprofits in a coastal town. She currently has dual citizenship with both US and Mexico. She said she acquired Mexican citizenship to show she was invested in making the area better. Four years ago, she moved back to Texas to take over her dad’s small business near one of the lakes (I don’t remember which one). She’s very much about schools and healthcare, and how we as Democrats need to work on bringing people, especially the young and rural people, into the Democratic party.
About her youth outreach, she told about a 17 year old in Royse City running for city council, and a 19 year old in Mt. Pleasant. She said she made the mistake of asking if he was old enough to vote and he said not only that, but he’s precinct chair in his district. She also mentioned the need to make the party more inclusive for younger people. In one area, a young adult wanted to get involved with the Democrats in the area, but they we’re doing the “wait your turn” so he went and started his own group. She’s trying to bring him back in.
It’s not going to be easy, especially since this is a big district , 16 counties, and Ratcliffe has $1M on hand. But we’ve got candidates running.
I grabbed a yard sign from her.

We’ve endured a year of editorials telling former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to grab some crochet needles, sit down, and shut up.
Meanwhile, former presidential candidate Mitt Romney gets ushered into a U.S. Senate seat, no questions asked. https://t.co/cXDEgVMqkc— Matt McDermott (@mattmfm) February 3, 2018

he is not only a loser in the objective sense, he represents everything the GOP base rejects
re: #148 Blind Frog Belly White
And he actually lost.
And he’s also older than Hillary, not that anyone in the media will bother to mention that.

“The memo that shows the dossier wasn’t the start of the FBI investigation?”
“Well…”
“And points out that Carter Page had been under FBI surveillance since 2013 for contacts with Russian agents?”
“Er…”
“And offers not a shred of proof for its allegation that the FISA warrant was obtained through perjury?”
“BUT THEY DIDN’T MENTION THE FUNDING!!!”
“There are 3 sources in the DOJ who contradict that, stating that the 4 FISA judges who signed off on the warrants were aware of the nature of the dossier’s funding.”

I welcome Mitt back into the Grand Old Party politics. I happen to think he would add another faction to the party (old money old moderate Mormon) that could further muck them up. They are less dangerous having control of congress but no control over the members.

there is a group of GOP politicians, ones who have a career and some sort of reputation to maintain, who are aware that the party needs to remain viable outside and after Donald Trump. The ones who see what sort of deal they struck with the Devil to win an election and what it might cost them in the long run.

House Approves New Payday Loan With 200 Percent Interest Rate
The Indiana House approved legislation Wednesday to create a new type of payday loan - with interest rates of up to 200 percent - that opponents argue amounts to predatory lending.
The legislation creates a loan of between about $600 and $1,500, with a term of up to 12 months. Rep. Woody Burton (R-Whiteland) says the loans are aimed at those with poor credit who have nowhere else to turn.

They both sound really good. I don’t think we have the Tailgater one here, but I’ve seen the mac and cheese one. I’ve had mac and cheese pizza from another pizza joint and it is actually quite tasty, even though it is obviously a serious overdose of carbs.
I like mac & cheese (heck I’m considering it for supper tonight) but there’s just something in that “too much” category for me :D

Tennessee Man Concerned Google Home Will Not Answer Questions about Jesus Christ (goes to The New Yorker)
If you ask an Amazon Echo “Who is Jesus Christ,” the robot will prattle off something from Wikipedia. “Jesus, also referred to as Jesus of Nazareth,” and so forth and so on. But if you ask a Google Home, you’ll get crickets. (Actually, the device will say, “I’m not sure how to help you with that.”) David Sams, a man from Tennessee, is very concerned about this conspiracy. “It’s kinda scary, it’s almost like Google has taken Jesus and God out of smart audio,” Sams told WJLA. “First it started with schools.”
(more, with video)
We don’t have things around here like Amazon Echo or Google Home, so I can’t test this … I’m assuming the man cited (and his friends, there are more of them in the article) gave an unclear question or something, so it must be a conspiracy!!!!
And when was “smart audio” a thing that Google could take Jesus out of?

Dooood. Are you kidding? If mitt wasn’t a known entity and Mormon in UT, he’d be primaried out of the GOP.
The GOP is nothing but cranks and crackpots. Sane people can’t get out of any primary.
And I hope and pray that no GOPer is ever elected again. We need two sane parties. The GOP can’t ever be that. Not now. Not after the last 20 years. It and Fox need to die if the US is to survive.
You miss the whole point. Mitt can be elected a Senator from Utah. So, he won’t be primaried out. I don’t want him for anything more than a wrench in the machine gears tearing up the party machine. I want the party torn down too. I think Mitt can help with that. I don’t want him elected to anything but as Senator.

I think the point is to be outraged at liberals (or in the case of Google, libertarians) taking God out of the public square as their lord Satan commands them!!!!
It doesn’t even matter if it’s true (that Google Home does or doesn’t answer a question about Jesus). There are videos all over YouTube already claiming Google is trying to destroy Christianity.
Give it a couple days and it will be on FOX News, after it filters its way through Drudge and Twitchy and Alex Jones.

“Your Honour, you must acquit my client of murdering his wife, because the principal witness against him had a long-standing feud with him over his borrowed lawnmower. He is biased and didn’t see what he claims he saw. He’s biased and is only trying to get him in trouble.”
“This case should be dismissed with prejudice, my client released with an apology and compensation for the wasting of his valuable time fighting this frivolous case, and the principal witness immediately charged with perjury and any other crimes that the court sees fit to bring for his blatantly malicious testimony!”

We don’t have things around here like Amazon Echo or Google Home, so I can’t test this … I’m assuming the man cited (and his friends, there are more of them in the article) gave an unclear question or something, so it must be a conspiracy!!!!
I just tested this for the heck of it. Amazon does respond with the wikipedia entry and google said “Religion is complicated and I’m still learning”. Said the same thing when I asked “Who is Mohamed?”

RNC Decides Trump’s Transphobic Military Ban Is a Thing They Definitely Want to Run With (goes to Wonkette)
The RNC is adopting ousting transgender personnel from the military, and declaring it a psychological and medical problem in their platform.

Since it takes outrage to drive conservative voters to the polls (because actual “make the rich richer” policies don’t play well with many voters), the 24/7 BS machine from the right will continue to drive something, anything into the minds of those voters.
Since no one can say for sure what will be the driving issue, they’ll throw out anything to see what sticks (War on Christmas and Starbuck’s cups, “illegal” immigrants swarming the borders to kill us all, Teh Geyh agenda trying to get your daughters to marry your lawnmowers, &c)

Attorney General refers Republican (Nunes) memo to the Justice Department’s internal watchdog over alleged bias against Donald Trump.
In a statement, Sessions said he had received inquiries from Congress raising concerns “about the department’s performance” and that he would forward those issues to “the appropriate DOJ components.”

Trump’s about to go on a rage bender after a day on the links in Mar a Lago.
Perfect.
Trump hired Carter Page to be part of his campaign and to advise him.
Who was Carter Page actually working for?
As Carter Page tells it, Page was advising the Kremlin for years. There’s a reason he was under surveillance by the US Government and there were FISA warrants issued to track his communications.
Page is just one of many in this cabal of cronies, this criminal syndicate that Trump surrounded himself with.
And all they do is lie about everything they did, especially the meeting with Russians in June 2016 that also meant that Kushner repeatedly lied on his SF86s (each 5 year prison sentences under 18 USC 1001 - and why is he still with security clearances?!).
The entire thing is rotten to the core, and even if Page is a counterintel asset, then this memo does more damage by its release than anything else.
Everything Trump has done has undermined US national security and strategic interests around the world, enabling Russia to expand influence.

I hope Democrats say exactly what you just laid out so succinctly in all the Sunday talk shows. Our side needs to push back harder. They need to just come out and say “Carter Page is a spy for Russia who deserved to be under government surveillance. Period.” Repeat that over and over again. Go on the offensive with the truth.

I used to work about 5 blocks away. I went to eat there a couple of times.
There was a Mickey’s near University and Snelling in the 70’s that my band used to visit often late night after gigs. We used to call eating there “meal roulette” because it would never fail that at least one of us would have to reorder our meal because they didn’t have the food or a piece of kitchen equipment was shut down. It seemed pretty random.

The way I’ve heard Sunday political shows go is:
When Democrats are in power, we need nothing but Republicans, so they can explain the opposition position.
When Republicans are in power, we need nothing but Republicans, so they can explain the majority position.

The election of Donald Trump is very much about older Americans afraid their God isn’t there anymore.
This is exactly the case with my parents, they are concerned but also anticipating the impending Rapture. Where they differ is my mother worries that my agnostic family will not be saved in time, while my father cannot wait for sinners to get their comeuppance
