Happy 4/20! If I still smoked pot (been a lot of years) I could do it legally now in California. I may have to try it again to see if it feels any different when it’s not against the law.

I’m convinced that White Evangelicals in this country would be okay with literal Hitler if he promised to reverse Roe, “protect the family”, talked about God, and all the crap the religious right likes to hear.

I can’t partake myself because of Federal contractor rules, but I’ve been thinking about getting my wife some to help with anxiety and stress. I can’t convince her we can just go to a store and buy some thought. She’s still worried we’ll get arrested.

these people support an old testament patriarchal world view in which women are either chattel to be treated not so much with respect but with the due care you show to your property, or as sluts, to be treated however you choose because they have no value.

Yep. And yet they’re the ones who freak out the most about impending Sharia Law. I think they’re jealous of Muslim countries that have Shariah.
So this is the new play, retroactive classification. The government didn’t consider them classified at the time but wants to classify them now so they can say Comey did something bad. Same shit the FBI pulled with Clinton, run it through the most conservative FOIA reviewer possible to get the result they wanted.
At least two of the memos that former FBI Director James Comey gave to a friend outside of the government contained information that officials now consider classified, prompting a review by the Justice Department’s internal watchdog. https://t.co/dYndG9UdCg via @WSJ

There were many - most - churches and Christians that supported Hitler due to those kinds of policies, the anticommunism and the anti-Semitism. That’s what makes the witness of Bonhoeffer and the rest of the resisting church so important now.

Absolutely. I’m of German descent as you know and I even have somewhat close family that lived in Germany at the time of the Nazis. I don’t know what they did but I really hope they did the right thing like Bonhoeffer and others did.

Scoop from @byrontau and @aviswanatha: Two of the memos Comey gave a friend outside the government contained information now considered classified, which has prompted a Justice Department inspector general review. https://t.co/w2jwSYPJkk

Given that Comey has the authority to classify and declassify information, it’s unlikely that a case can be made that he wrongfully disseminated classified information. https://t.co/VxwRfnYeMz

The neighboring village had an unreformed Nazi pastor serving at their church well into the 1960’s.

The point is that it’s not merely unreasonable, but that it is stochastic terrorism. That it is implicitly dangerous in a way that transcends the norms of free speech and debate, because for women to counter it with their lived experiences puts them literally in the crosshairs.

Absolutely. It’s akin to when O’Reilly compared Dr. Tiller to Mengele. Even during the brief period when I opposed legalized abortion, I hated the pro life movement because they had no compassion or empathy for women who got abortions.

To celebrate the date I’m having a few well chosen friends over this evening. Pulled pork sammiches, appropriate munchies (M&Ms plain and peanut, Chex mix, chips n dips), much wine and (mostly decriminalized in Houston, thanks new DA!) herbal libation. We’ll even have a great guitarist for sing-a-longs, a couple of djembe drums and it’s cool enough for the fire pit (to help mask the other smoke). :D
(Mostly it was a good deadline date for a party so I’d get off my ass and finish all my springtime projects and cleaning.)
re: #62 goddamnedfrank

It is stupid. A lot of reaction to Trump, from social media memes to ads, seems to work from the idea that if we only tell people what he’s really doing, what he’s really like, they’ll oppose him.
There’s some purpose to that, but it doesn’t come from persuading people that Trump is bad. The only value to this repetition of Trump malfeasance is in reinforcing the will of those who already oppose him. Just like in the far right hate cult, reinforcing of this sense of opposition serves to keep people motivated. And that’s not a small thing - it’s arguable that constant negativity is the model to success in the US electoral system, because people are more motivated by it than by positivity.
But it will never change a single opinion. Trumpers know he’s bad. They know he’s corrupt, treacherous, and a thug. They like it. They like it because they want to be the same - they want to do terrible things, to indulge the worst sides of themselves, to hurt you and everyone like you, because they hate you. Their hatred of everyone outside their cult is their only defining trait. Trump being bad doesn’t discourage them - evangelical support only goes up, Republican support only goes up, because him hurting other people makes them happy, because they want to do it too.
These people cannot be persuaded. They can only be marginalised and overcome. And the way to do that is to change the system that keeps them on top.

Store owners, no matter their race, are legitimately concerned about crime disproportionately committed by young black men. Plus, blacks are lousy tippers. Both affect how black customers are perceived—and treated. Will #Starbucks address this in their “racial bias training”?
