I can’t partake myself because of Federal contractor rules, but I’ve been thinking about getting my wife some to help with anxiety and stress. I can’t convince her we can just go to a store and buy some thought. She’s still worried we’ll get arrested.

There were many - most - churches and Christians that supported Hitler due to those kinds of policies, the anticommunism and the anti-Semitism. That’s what makes the witness of Bonhoeffer and the rest of the resisting church so important now.

Pulled pork sammiches, appropriate munchies (M&Ms plain and peanut, Chex mix, chips n dips), much wine and (mostly decriminalized in Houston, thanks new DA!) herbal libation. We’ll even have a great guitarist for sing-a-longs, a couple of djembe drums and it’s cool enough for the fire pit (to help mask the other smoke). :D

(Mostly it was a good deadline date for a party so I’d get off my ass and finish all my springtime projects and cleaning.)

It is stupid. A lot of reaction to Trump, from social media memes to ads, seems to work from the idea that if we only tell people what he’s really doing, what he’s really like, they’ll oppose him.

There’s some purpose to that, but it doesn’t come from persuading people that Trump is bad. The only value to this repetition of Trump malfeasance is in reinforcing the will of those who already oppose him. Just like in the far right hate cult, reinforcing of this sense of opposition serves to keep people motivated. And that’s not a small thing - it’s arguable that constant negativity is the model to success in the US electoral system, because people are more motivated by it than by positivity.

But it will never change a single opinion. Trumpers know he’s bad. They know he’s corrupt, treacherous, and a thug. They like it. They like it because they want to be the same - they want to do terrible things, to indulge the worst sides of themselves, to hurt you and everyone like you, because they hate you. Their hatred of everyone outside their cult is their only defining trait. Trump being bad doesn’t discourage them - evangelical support only goes up, Republican support only goes up, because him hurting other people makes them happy, because they want to do it too.

These people cannot be persuaded. They can only be marginalised and overcome. And the way to do that is to change the system that keeps them on top.
