Posthumous pardons are feel good fuckshit. They don’t actually right any wrong and are only designed to absolve society of deserved guilt. In this case it’s even worse because the pardon is a passive aggressive whitewash of continuing institutional racism and racist police brutality.

The layman’s version of the IgNobel prize asking that very question: “Are cats are liquid?”
A liquid is traditionally defined as a material that adapts its shape to fit a container. Yet under certain conditions, cats seem to fit this definition.
This somewhat paradoxical observation emerged on the web a few years ago and joined the long list of internet memes involving our feline friends. When I first saw this question it made me laugh, and then think. I decided to reformulate it to illustrate some problems at the heart of rheology, the study of the deformations and flows of matter. My study on the rheology of cats won the 2017 Ig Nobel Prize in Physics.

Small men fail to understand world, need big guns to feel manly .
I’ve read a lot of Nazi history in the last fortnight. Not WW2 combat, stuff about ideology, policy, and personalities.
One depressing thing: the frequency with which the racist activities of the US South was either invoked or replicated by German national socialists. On many societal levels. Compare and contrast KKK rituals and things like the torchlight marches. Compare and contrast Jim Crow and the Nuremburg laws. I mean, Italian fascists contributed to the rhetorical style and material culture, too, but the overlap and borrowing from the South is big.
Further depressing thought: people in the US went right back to discriminatory social engineering and terror targeted at African Americans—including the works programs and infrastructure transformation of FDR, which took the legs out from beneath African American by cutting them out of benefits and making them eat the negative consequences of the changes—while inflating larger and larger the mythology that we had unique moral clarity because we fought the Axis.
Himmler described national socialism as “socialism for people with good blood” and if you look at the implementation, it was a kleptocracy. Take from the “wrong” people by merging criminality and identity—you are a crime because you are—apply asset forfeiture and collective guilt. Basically, there’s a pyramid chart of who gets how much booty, and always the threat that you can be dropped to a lower status, including the very bottom where you’re deemed an unperson and subject to resource extraction as opposed to just privation.
Furthermore, the concept of the “right” people means infinite mutability of who is in the in-group (and thus deserving) so the distribution of spoils is always a carrot/stick means of demanding compliance: that the ethos makes no sense—the pseudo-science race genetics, the conspiracy theory-rich reading of political philosophy, the empty set of threatening “elites” to be despised and dismissed—is a bug not a feature. All the concepts are instrumental…race, blood and soil, “culture,” et cetera…to justifying the hierarchy and the spoils system, and are deliberately hollow and inconsistent. Bad faith is built into the thought-world at a basic level.
The Obvious Diabeetus Nazis at the rally today are disgusting and can fuck off forever, but it’s important to note that there are a lot of folks who share their thought-world who are considered legitimate commentators on politics and policy, and a long US-distinct history of stripping people of alien culture of assets, justified by their designation—mostly based on white/non-white distinction. Camps and pogroms are terrifying and “never again” should be everyone’s watchword, but the subtler redistributionist system that national socialists push—and I’d argue we’ve had national socialists by another name in our politics since the get-go—we also have to watch out for.

I credit Ta-Nehisi Coates for laying out how racist the New Deal was.
What amazes me is the physical infrastructure component…fucking over AA communities by transforming the physical spaces that they had investing time and capital into turning into neighborhoods. Where do you zone the pollution-spewing factories? Where do you put the highway exit versus the overpass?
Then again, I keep getting poleaxed by new versions of ethnic minority profits, white people conspire to take their shit away and the government either helps or turns a blind idea. The Tulsa race riots and the destruction of Black Wall Street; the theft of the very valuable farm businesses developed by West Cost Japanese-Americans during WW2 internment; the fricking murder conspiracy to strip the Osage of their oil profits.

What frustrates me Re: New Deal is many white progressives don’t see that while denouncing people like Obama as sell outs. God knows I have my criticism of Wall Street but Roosevelt was okay with working with people who supported legalized lynching.

Quoth:
And Linker reminds us that theater critic analysis is useful for pundits with an axe to grind, and in the particular case of Clinton the derangement tends to be particularly pronounced. So while transparently silly the “most winnable” meme is useful to Linker because it allows him to claim that Clinton and her supporters have no legitimate grievances and nobody else needs to be held accountable, when of course Clinton does have perfectly legitimate grievances and there are a lot of people who made bad judgements and need to be held accountable. As Sargent says, Comey is openly admitting that he put his thumb on the scale because he assumed that Clinton would win. This is bad behavior! (And, incidentally, it’s another reason why high levels of confidence in the outcome of counterfactuals are misplaced. Rubio or Cruz might have been “better” candidates in some abstract sense, but Clinton wouldn’t have been treated as the president-elect by the media or the FBI in those scenarios, and we have no idea how that would have played out. The question of whether Trump is a “bad” candidate is actually very complicated given the Electoral College and the media environment.)
But the narrative seems to be set: anything less than treating the ineptitude and personal corruption of Hillary Clinton as the end all, be all of Trump’s win in 2016 is unacceptable. She must be treated as The Sole Reason and Proof that the Dem Party must be totally burned down first before ever touching Trump.
And I fucking hate it forever.
15 months into Trump Presidency of Fail and Embarrassment and we see him complaining about not calling people certain stupid names because everyone knows he calls people stupid names.

The endless normalization of bad behavior by white dudes amazes me, and I’m a giant, very white dude. Like, literally and figuratively super white.
I don’t remember where I first heard the idea that part of white privilege is to treated as an individual as opposed to a manifestation of a collective*, but there’s a corollary in which ugliness and stupid cruelty are excused as being exceptional cases or the product of circumstance or not really meant, and that tolerance is extended disproportionately to white guys. So part of privilege is that not only are you an individual first, but also your unacceptable behavior—be it just rudeness or truly deep ugliness (up to and including stuff like abusive behavior)—is a product of circumstance and context, not a fixed aspect of the self. Whereas the unacceptable behavior of other folk is indicative of the true selves and immutable.
This is the bottom line for every fucking pundit who says something, whines about being criticized, and then come in the hot takes about how they’re silenced and maybe we could learn from them if we just listened…no matter how stupid and substanceless their statements are. Half the right-wing “intellectuals” write content that has no argument, just tu quoque and straw man, yet they are consistently tolerated and coddled. And eventually they cross into total inappropriateness…finally stretching too far with sexist or racist tropes that are only a short walk beyond what they do day after day…they are still permitted to not bear that mistake like an albatross.
Look at the “Friends of Hamas” shit Ben Shapiro pulled. That alone should have demonstrated that he operates not just in bad faith in his commentary, but is fundamentally uninterested in discussion to the point that he will invent misdeeds to attribute to his opponents. Or the ongoing Kevin Williamson fracas. Or Jonah Fucking Goldberg being treated as a serious intellectual when “Liberal Fascism” was a barely-researched, shallow, ahistorical Big Lie.
I frequently say that conservatism right now isn’t conservatism, and the actual ideology at play is more about stratification of entitlements and license (what can you get away with), and a big part of that tiered system is who gets to use language and rhetoric carelessly. Which is genuinely very frightened and disturbing because hearkens back to Sartre’s assessment of the use of works and concepts by antisemites: that they feel no obligation to use responsibly, because they are beyond arguments and simply see their opponents as inherently invalid.
* having just read in detail about Kristalnacht and the subsequent financial penalty all Jews had to pay to the state for the nuisance caused by their destruction of their property, this concept of collectivity assigned as a way of creating group guilt is salient.
Same theme of “who gets to be contextual versus fixed in identity, look at the way violent acts are described when committed by people with privilege in the US context, versus everyone else.

Details remain very sketchy but there is elevating talk that a coup attempt has been made against King Salman of Saudi Arabia. Heavy gunfire was heard around the sprawling royal palace complex overnight in the Kingdom, and various reports state that the King had been moved to a safe bunker complex at an air base nearby. Other sources say it may be a terror attack or an assault by Houthi forces that infiltrated the country, or even the result of a small drone overflying a palace checkpoint. So at this point, we really don’t have a definitive answer as to what is going on.

After rare gunfire in Saudi capital, officials say they shot down a toy drone
ISTANBUL — After residents in Saudi Arabia’s capital reported hearing rare bursts of gunfire on Saturday evening, followed by videos of heavy shooting that circulated on the Internet, the Saudi government said it had an explanation: Someone had flown a recreational drone, without authorization, and security forces had shot it down.
A government statement said that guards at a checkpoint in Riyadh, the capital, observed the drone shortly before 8 p.m., in the Al-Khozama neighborhood, where a palace belonging to King Salman, the Saudi monarch, is located. The security forces “dealt with it according to their orders,” the statement said.

Kinda ironic, that members the “party of personal responsibility” seem to have great difficulties accepting and much less admitting their own mistakes, which in this case is electing a shady as fuck individual as the president of the land.

The peddlers latched onto long ago that the party/group that runs on privilege, emotion, and essentially non-logic is much easier to take advantage of. Con man used to sell himself as of being of good family stock - and thus obviously could be trusted. This morphed into being part of whatever the proper group needs to be; Christian, Republican, etc. and then having an initial store of trust to be taken advantage of.
And then pile on top of it that once people are time and emotionally invested* in something it is very, very, difficult to give it up as a bad deal since it’s a sacrifice of resources, ego, and often social ridicule for being a sucker.

Because they’re racist, moronic fucks, that’s why.
Today in Wheat-dogg family news: my cousin B and I have finally heard from our older cousin M after nearly 30 years of silence. Seriously, M dropped off the planet (apparently) in the 1990s, and none of us had any clue where she was or what she was doing. B and I decided that none of us are getting any younger, and M is the oldest among us first cousins (I’m the youngest) so we decided to get serious about hunting her down. It was not easy. Her name is very common — like looking for a Bob Smith common — and she has no online presence at all. Finally, using those people search sites, we located a likely suspect living in a senior community on the Big Island of Hawai’i. We called a few times, got no answer, but finally B was able to talk to a person in the office who agreed to pass on a message to M. He followed up with a letter to M. Months have passed, but he got a surprise call from M yesterday! While she has some health issues, she’s as sharp as ever at age 71, and I am looking forward to chatting with her on this contraption called the telephone very soon.

The movie is even more … something… humorous is the closest word but that’s not really it… than the series was. Having been a real world tanker, the sight of a tank being drifted should make me cringe but hey, it’s anime :D It’s like expecting sane terraforming in Cowboy Bebop.
So, back from the state Dem convention. Good turnout, lots of energy. Some really good statewide candidates (and a few who even have a chance of knocking off Rep. US reps, like Archie Parnell, who almost won the special election for gross, disgusting Mick Mulvaney’s old seat last year.)
My choice for gov. had a great intro for his speech—a marching band, a video by Uncle Joe Biden (James Smith, our candidate was a good friend of Beau’s) and an intro by
Jim Clyburn.
Alison Lundergan Grimes spoke last night at our dinner and was amazing. Tim Ryan also spoke last night, but I left the dinner before he went on.
Jeff Merkley was the keynote today and he was really great.
And Merkley and Ryan spoke at our Women’s Council breakfast today as well. And then…there was Nina fucking Turner, who spoke at the breakfast (I walked out) and also had a slot during the convention (I left as she was introduced.)
When I rejoined the breakfast after she finished yapping, they were lauding her as the voice of the party—first Tim Ryan sang her praises, then one of our state reps yapping about how Our Revolution is getting all these wins (NOT) and were totally responsible for the special election wins in VA, GA, etc. I wanted to puke.
The woman who thought about running as Jill Stein’s VP and refused to support Hillary in the general—she’s supposed to be telling Democrats what to do? Not THIS Democrat. Really ruined an otherwise good convention.

re: #296 The Ghost of a Flea
“Why do they always go the extra step and make the fictional assailant brown? Why add that particular detail?”
First, they do it because they can. Second, they know the way the system works, and that for hundreds of years, it has worked in their favor and still does in most cases. They also know that the system is built so that some Americans’ are viewed as being more credible than other Americans in the same nation no matter what the Constitution states.
I’ve posted about Naomi Wu @realSexyCyborg here several times, to highlight her troubles with the male-dominated maker (tech builder) culture and lately with a run-in with Vice magazine outing some of her personal details. Well, anyway, it seems I tweeted something wrong and she has blocked me on Twitter. No clue why, other than I was perhaps a little too snide in a recent reply to her. (To the effect of, I’m not on Twitter 24/7 so how would I know you’ve already answered this question several times before?)
I’m one of her supporters, and even sponsored her when she had a Patreon account. (Now suspended for Vice magazine-related reasons) So, I’m a little miffed.
Life goes on, nonetheless. I wish her the best.

They still allow lead shot in other states?
I’m not a hardcore gun person (though I own three firearms), so I’m not familiar with the minutiae of laws pertaining to ammunition composition. I did glean this from the article:
Lead ammunition was banned nationwide for waterfowl hunting in 1991.
In an effort to save their condor population, California implemented a ban that will phase out lead ammunition by 2019.
A day before the President Barack Obama left office, his administration issued an order that would phase out lead ammunition on federal wildlife refuges by 2022.
Under President Donald Trump’s administration, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke reversed the order during his first day in office.

If Obama had banned arsenic compounds in food, Trump’s crew would make it legal again. It’s how they work.

Every once in awhile I just can’t wrap my head around this shit. No matter how cynical I am, or how steeped in the history and the sociology that describes the larger picture of how common it is. Even with having a dad that was racist.

Give it time. We’re getting Alita. I don’t think the general public is ready for Akira or even Appleseed.
I’d like to see Gate done as a movie myself.

I think we can safely say Don Junior likes the taste of lead in his broiled gnu.

If you’re forced to live it and you’re never permitted to forget your 2nd Class status no matter how much you accomplish in your life and/or no matter how faithfully you follow the rules of this society, you know almost from birth how the system works and that there’s a high probability that it will rarely work in your favor.

As the bald eagle population continues to increase, we’re finding more birds poisoned by lead from spent ammunition. This eagle had to be rehabbed after they found it almost dead, x-ray showed it had swallowed a single lead pellet from spent bird shot.
Great picture, sad story

It’s the latest fashion for women. It will soon pass.

re: #345 Jenner7
The concept of the news network manipulating the authoritarian leader by addressing him is just…not what dystopian writers prepped us for. We were braced for a competent Big Brother, and what we got was Big Dumbass.
Marshall McLuhan and Baudrillard are laughing their asses off in Hell.

But that is so fugly. Cold shoulder is one thing; wedding dress attacked by coyotes is something altogether different.

I blame Rey’s costume in the new Star Wars movies for the wonky sleeve fashion.

I think they’re arm wraps, not sleeves. A long strip of cloth wrapped around each arm.
