So far, West Virginia’s abortion ballot initiative is looking like a nail-biter. CNN is showing that with about 67 percent of the vote in, votes in favor lead by about 8,000. The measure would prevent state Medicaid funding from being used for abortions and weaken abortion protections (which would be important if Roe v. Wade is ever overturned).

No. It was always going to be a surprise if he did. But I think we’ve seen a lot from Democrats here that I didn’t think we’d see for a long time. Let’s figure out how to carry it into 2020.

re: #191 Belafon
That was my wife’s thought, the possibility of Beto in 2020.
Trouble is, though, American voters (especially of the “low info” variety) just have a thing for “winners” - and it doesn’t even matter what or how you “won”, only that you did (see the nauseating MSM punditry where issues that impact human rights and people’s lives are reduced to a game of who “won” and who “lost”).
Democratic candidates who lose don’t seem to have much of a future in national politics (though if someone can come up with a relatively recent example that proves me wrong, I’m all ears).
re: #205 ObserverArt

Yay! I remember when Sessions won reelection back when Texas did they’re off-decade redistricting by wiping out a neighboring Democratic seat.

As they noted on NPR, the Dems faced the worst Senate map in a century. I didn’t expect a win there, but am hoping for gains.

By the way, VA-2 demonstrates clearly why the courts matter. Taylor tried to steal the election by having staff canvas for a third party candidate, going so far as to forge signatures and get ones from dead people. The VA DNC took the matter to court and got her thrown off the ballot. If the judge had ruled in her favor or dismissed the case, Taylor likely would be celebrating reelection tonight.
And for my next trick, Steve King is losing Iowa 4 to JD Scholten! (Probably won’t last, but he really and truly is in some danger here.)

Rat-fucking communard unicornists. I am tempted to get together with other Dem fatcats and see if we can promote some crazed RWNJ third partyists to siphon votes from the GOP. Tempted, but I won’t do it: I would be too afraid of going to hell. I don’t even believe in hell, but why take chances?

With 42% of precincts reporting, Tina Smith (D-MN, Senate) and Tim Walz (D-MN, Governor) have been holding steady at 57% and 58% of the vote, respectively. I’m still waiting to see where they think the Republican votes are going to come from; Amy Klobuchar (D-MN, Senate) was called hours ago, and she is only sitting at 64%.

Well here’s why I think you shouldn’t be surprised. We went for Clinton by 10 points. We’ve been trending Democratic since Obama beat McCain. I believe Obama beat McCain here but Romney won. The thing is though. Frank Wolf won re-election for years because he was respected and seen as someone who got stuff done. Comstock got elected first in 2014 in a Republican year and as his protege. She sort of benefitted in 2016 since people really weren’t sure if her opponent lived in the district. Wexton had a lot of VA-10 bonafides. Her state senate district is just east of mine and I actually first met her at a Farmers Market when I was a volunteer for Perriello. She signed the petition even though she supported now Governor Northam since she’s a good sport. I’m not surprised Jen won but I was shocked that it was called so early.
GALEN DRUKE11:11 PM
The education divide persists. Democrats appear to be doing well in well-educated suburbs, which extends a trend we’ve seen of Democrats gaining ground with college-educated voters. In 2017, Pew Research Center reported that people with a bachelor’s degree or higher favored Democrats by 22 points. As recently as 2010 that group was split evenly between the two parties and in 1992, it favored Republicans by 4 points. On the flip side, Republicans have gained plenty of ground with non-college educated whites in recent years.
I’m beyond elated. I really am. Aside from my local representative getting smoked (which was expected, since I live in a largely Republican precinct), it has been a good night for Minnesotans. We have a Democratic governor, we kept our Democratic senators, and we helped propel the Blue Wave in the U.S. House of Representatives. I can go to bed satisfied that I helped make a difference in our country. I’ll see you guys tomorrow night.

333 out of 1389 precincts reporting. My county’s eight precincts have not yet reported. It’ still an all-way tie here.
458,000 out of 1,219,000 votes have been counted (turnout was nearly 100%).
Deb Fischer holds a 14-point lead over Jane Raybould. Pete Rickets holds a 15-point lead over Bob Krist.
Medicaid expansion holds a 9 point lead FOR.
Also considering all the various voting restriction shenanigans the GOP has been doing, the gerrymandering, etc, Dems still win the House.

Deb Fischer holds a 14-point lead over Jane Raybould. Pete Rickets holds a 15-point lead over Bob Krist.
Medicaid expansion holds a 9 point lead FOR.
What about you? Did you win?

For a variety of reasons, among them demographics, culture and history, the South is a real tough egg for Democrats to crack.
Tell me about it—once again, we have zero dem state office holders here in south by dog carolina. We had an exception Gov/Lt. Gov team, and they got smoked. We have one (Jim Clyburn) Dem on the national scene (6 Republican reps/2 Republican senators) and I just want to puke.

Minnesota’s Iron Range I believe. One of those former strong Dem areas that have gone very Republican since the voters are hooked on member berries.
No matter how things shake out the rest of the night, tomorrow morning will be a nice leisurely 9 mile run. No stress no strain.
Just like 2016.
We review
We assess
We plan
We move on to what we have to do next

Didn’t your governor promise to ignore this vote?

I guess that’s why I understand why you say Bakari will just seek Clyburn’s seat and not go for it at Senate or Governor which is a shame since he’s a smart and insightful guy who would be the best thing politically I think that ever happened to your state.

Here’s what as a third generation American infuriates me about Ted Cruz. Here’s a guy who benefited from liberal immigration laws. It’s why he was able to run for President despite not being born here ffs. It’s why his father and his father’s countrymen can easily get permanent residency here even though let’s be honest Cuba is far from the worst tyranny in the West. Yet Cruz fucking talks like Bill the Butcher. That asshole Rubio does the same shit.
I got mine

Yep. And goddamn is he smug. And his attempts to appropirate pop culture- his shitty ass Simpsons impressions and his stupid idea that Lisa is a villain. Gah. I can see why his former roomate hated him. I can see why a bugger like Lindsay Graham found him detestable. HE’s just an awful person.
Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff. I like the sound of that!

They did elect two Democrats to the House, so baby steps forward.

Hypocrisy (EDIT: and a complete lack of empathy) is the fuel of conservatism. My “favorite” example is Texas governor Greg Abbott, who got super-rich suing after he was paralyzed in an accident, and then set about making it impossible for anyone else injured in an accident to sue people for more than a pittance.

Absolutely. I can’t believe anyone who knows that story would vote to put him on a condo board.

I mean. I feel bad that so many of them lost a lot when the communists took over but okay. I have family that suffered under Communism too. They don’t embrace everything right wing. BTW forgot to tell you guys but my Slovak cousin the mayor was up for reelection in our ancestral home village. Not sure when that is but hoping she wins. She’s a great mayor.

Wow I knew Abbott got paralyzed but didn’t know. But you’re right and it’s why I hate conservatives. They are the typical fuck you I got mine type of people that I can’t stand.

One of my neighbors on Key Biscayne told me the reason Cubans were so much better than other nationalities in the Caribbean was that they had killed all the Indians rather than interbreed with them.

? What story is that? Sorry I only know Abbott as Governor TCOT since he’s always fishing for approval from conservatives on Twitter rather than you know being a governor for all Texans regardless of ideology.

“…When a 75-foot oak tree snapped and fell, crippling a jogger named Greg Abbott in July 1984, he did what most Texans would do: He sued the owner of the tree. A few months later, Abbott’s attorney also sued the tree-trimming company that had worked on the giant oak, and within a year, the homeowner, the tree company, their insurance companies and Abbott had agreed to an out-of-court settlement that would pay Abbott’s current and future medical bills and compensate him for mental anguish and for some of the income he lost because of the accident.”
“Abbott, who is now a champion of tort reform running for attorney general of Texas, says he hears no disharmony between the actions he took then and the positions he’s taking now.”

Greg Abbott’s daughter goes to USC, a private university in “communist” California. I think it’s hilarious.

The AP has now called three of four Iowa congressional districts for Democrats. The only one still out is IA-4, where J.D. Scholten leads Steve King by about 1,000 votes (half a percentage point) with 64% of results in.

I think Iowa’s going back to the Dems in 2020. If I’m Joni Ernst, I’m a bit worried tonight.
Oops! I was reading my election results wrong because the King County Elections site was only counting King County results. Maria Cantwell is only ahead 59/41. And Big Oil and Big Pop are winning on Initiatives 1631 and 1634. Boo!
But Kim Shrier is going to win, so WA-08 is a pickup.
Connecticut possibly poised to elect a GOP governor.

He got something in the neighborhood of $10 million for his accident, and then worked hard to limit awards to anyone else.

When I took Latin American history, I learned that the Spainish set up a very complicated racial hierarchy system. Sadly the legacies of that remain in Latin and South America. My sister in law’s sister was telling me about colorism in Peru and colorism is a subject that we Anglos really don’t think about that much even though we should. Peru and my SiL’s history is why I would love it if my niece took a DNA test. That little girl is hysterical though. She didn’t like me telling her she was a 1/8 Irish. Ironic since her birthday is near St. Paddy’s lol.

Latin and South America and the Carribean are such fascinating places. Hell look at the differences between the DR and Haiti even though they’re on the same island. Not just the language barrier.
re: #206 Belafon
No. It was always going to be a surprise if he did. But I think we’ve seen a lot from Democrats here that I didn’t think we’d see for a long time. Let’s figure out how to carry it into 2020.
I’m in total and absolute agreement with you there, Belafon, and very well said!
re: #575 jaunte

That’s sort of the whole reason the transatlantic slave trade ever happened.
The people who were already in the western hemisphere before Columbus arrived, half of them died from smallpox, measles, mumps, whooping cough, scarlet fever, etc., even before any of the bullets & swords deaths.
re: #561 jaunte
There’s a terrifying podcast called “Dr. Death” about a Texas surgeon who cripples and kills his patients. Some debate as to whether he is purely incompetent or purposely killing and maiming his patients, but he’s eventually locked up for life. Appealing though, of course.
Anyway, due to Texas’s horrible “torte reform” it was hard for the surviving patients to find a lawyer to represent them in their cases against the surgeon. (No money)
These are people who were butchered by this doctor, and got very little compensation. The podcast host opened a can of worms by bringing up torte reform and the damage it causes. Basically, the point of it is to make malpractice insurance cheap for doctors while screwing everyone else. Naturally, she got and continues to get a ton of hate on social media for daring to state what Texas “torte reform” is all about.
The descriptions of what the doctor did to those people is some of the most horrifying shit I’ve heard. Scarier than any horror movie, because it’s true.

Reminder: it’s hard to win when 100,000’s of your voters are disenfranchised. The majority are racists who are the ones voting — and they are fine with Kemp.
