I’ll follow along here. Too many candidates. It’s not a debate, it’s the airing of talking points.

So tonight is the Joe and Bernie show… with Pete and Kamala hoping to get a word in somewhere.

A double KO would be a nice result from Joe v. Bernie.

$1000/mo is a lot of money. It is not a livable wage. In some places, that won’t even pay the rent.

He’s never even mentioned that his UBI would eliminate the need for food stamps, minimum wage, it would let people can’t work or don’t want to work to move to sparsely populated places where the cost of living is super-low… (and then those places would need a grocery store, a local school, a diner…)

That’s part of why I don’t like him. He’d be the opposite of LBJ. And the Roberts Court and Republican AGs would be drooling to overturn his stuff and they’d have more success then they did against Obama since Obama was more politically savvy than Bernie ever will be.

Trump’s non-existent international credibility reminds me of a story from the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Before President Kennedy went on TV to show the reconnaissance photos and explain the situation, he had US ambassadors brief allied leaders on the findings and, if possible, get offers of support. In Paris, the ambassador requested and got an urgent meeting with President DeGaulle, who was having his own difficulties with US policy at the time. The ambassador brought low resolution photo-copies of the recce photos, the best that could be provided at short notice with the technology of the time. DeGaulle listened. The ambassador offered to have high resolution copies of the photos flown from Washington so French experts would examine them themselves. He even offered to fly the experts to Washington to examine the originals. DeGaulle waved the offer away, “No. The word of the President of the United States is good enough for me. Tell him you have my support.”

That’s been the big change since I started my new job. I can sleep until 5:50. At 5:50 on Tuesdays, the leaf blowers start up. The first time it happened (Tuesday a week ago), I sat up in bed, ripped the sleep mask off my face* and snapped WTF!!! I’ve worked the same hours for the last six years or so and hadn’t heard the maintenance people in so long.

* The sleep mask I bought is the best $15 I’ve spent in ages. It has gel walls around the eyes, and you can blink and you don’t hit the mask. But it’s dark, dark, dark. Great sleep. Much comfy.

From lat thread:

re: #28 Eventual Carrion

Tionesta is a nice place. All along that area. The drive from here where I am to Tionesta is a nice ride (in summer, not winter). It is about 60 miles from where I sit to there. You leave here in the foothills and it is steady climbing up and down gradually growing rock walls. My cousins went to Franklin schools, which is about half way from here to Tionesta. My little sisters husband grew up around Warren and we would get away and head up there to party years ago.

I find Northwest Pennsylvania incredibly beautiful, particularly in the summer. In the winter, even though it is still beautiful, it is too dang cold and snowy for me these days. Less of that sense of adventure I guess.

As you know, the Boy Scout Camp was located along Tionesta Reservoir in the Alleghany National Forest. I understand that Forest Service did not renew the lease when it expired back in the 1980s.

I remember standing on the hills above the reservoir and watching 4 and 5 foot muskellunge (fish) swim past.

I don’t think that I ever made it up to Warren, East Hickory was about as far as I usually went. Maybe once to Tidioute.

I think Biden’s comments about James Eastland were a “senior moment.” That would be all the more reason to use them against him. His time has passed.

Eastland was not just a segregationist. He was one of the worst of the pack, outspoken in ways that ordinary racists like Strom Thurmond were not.

During World War II, Eastland vocally opposed and degraded the service of African American soldiers in the war. He incited protests and comparisons to Hitlerism following a vitriolic speech on the floor of the Senate in July 1945, in which he complained that the Negro soldier was physically, morally, and mentally incapable of serving in combat. In contrast, Eastland claimed that the “boys from the South were fighting to maintain white supremacy.”

Earlier on 1944, Eastland claimed the “Negro race” was an inferior race:

I have no prejudice in my heart, but the white race is the superior race and the Negro race an inferior race and the races must be kept separate.

The same year he protested against Smith v. Allwright, which banned White primaries:

This decision reveals an alarming tendency to destroy the sovereignty of the states. Our supreme court is usurping the legislative function, and Congress may yet prove the last citadel of constitutional government.

When the Supreme Court issued its decision in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education, ruling that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, Eastland, like most Southern Democrats, denounced it. In a speech given in Senatobia, Mississippi on August 12, 1955, he announced:

On May 17, 1954, the Constitution of the United States was destroyed because of the Supreme Court’s decision. You are not obliged to obey the decisions of any court which are plainly fraudulent sociological considerations.

Eastland was not just a segregationist. He was one of the worst of the pack, outspoken in ways that ordinary racists like Strom Thurmond were not.

The reason FDR was able to pass so many “liberal” New Deal policies is because he was hostage to Southern democrats and let them exclude black people from most of those policies. Even his grandest achievement, Social Security, specifically and deliberately excepted agricultural workers and domestic servants, so black people and hispanics were left out.

He also blocked anti-lynching legislation.

This is the Bernie tradition — it’s all about leftist economics for the white working class, and fuck everyone else.
