It was crimes all the way down (and in this case) all the way up. Everyone in the chain of command knew and did their worst to cover up the criminal acts.

So this is big news. You know the Ukraine prosecutor Biden helped get fired? The one Trumpers are saying Biden wanted to get rid of because he was investigating Biden’s son? TPM is reporting that three GOP Senators wanted him gone, too:

Sens. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Rob Portman (R-OH) and former Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL), along with five of their Democratic colleagues, sent a letter to then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in February 2016 pressing him to make “urgent reforms” to the prosecutor general’s office.

The letter is currently on Sen. Portman’s web site.

As expected, Trumpworld was trying to deflect and protect Trump from scrutiny on his business dealings. IRS official was concerned that the returns weren’t getting the proper level of scrutiny. In fact, there was an overt attempt to interfere in the audit. “Unable to defend the substance of the president’s extortion attempt, Republicans have turned to complaining about the process. But Thursday’s performance on the White House lawn renders those baseless complaints moot—the president just did publicly what the Democrats have accused him of doing privately. The only argument against removing Trump from office is that Trump’s raving is just Trump being Trump, and is not to be taken seriously. But the fact that the president’s madness must be ignored from time to time for America to continue to function as a democracy is an argument for, not against, his removal.

“Although congressional Democrats and Republicans are divided on impeachment, there is vanishingly little disagreement on whether or not Trump abuses his authority or is fit to be president. The distinction is that, for the moment, Republicans appear not to care

Short thread

119
DangerMan  Oct 3, 2019 • 2:44:48pm

via the huffpo

WASHINGTON ― The story behind why Democrats are moving forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump is simple.

The president repeatedly pressured a foreign government to meddle in the 2020 U.S. election to help him win. It’s all there in the White House summary of Trump’s July 25 phone call with the Ukrainian president. It’s corroborated by the subsequent whistleblower complaint. And Trump keeps telling other countries to do it, too, on live television.

The Republican strategy to respond to this is to create total confusion, namely by focusing on the arcane legal process of whistleblower law. Not only are their claims false, they are irrelevant to the facts of Trump’s abuse of power.

Another glaring hole in McCarthy’s claim is that the White House, Trump’s personal attorney and Trump himself have all separately corroborated the whistleblower’s claims. Even before releasing the transcript, the president admitted that he brought up Joe Biden with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. His lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, has repeatedly said he was right to do so.

GOP senators
, meanwhile, have been spreading misinformation to try to smear the credibility of the whistleblower. They have argued that in order to be considered a “real” whistleblower, you have to have firsthand information of a situation, which is false.

They were publicly corrected on Tuesday by one of their own colleagues, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), a longtime advocate of whistleblower safeguards.

“The distinctions being drawn between first- and second-hand knowledge aren’t legal ones,” said Grassley. “It’s just not part of whistleblower protection law or any agency policy.”

He added, “This person appears to have followed the whistleblower protection laws and ought to be heard out and protected.”

Random question, when did we change the spelling of Kyiv from Keiv to Kyiv? Or is that just one of those style things in English where we change letters just because?

Kiev is Russian, Kyiv is Ukrainian.

As soon as I saw that Republicans had also called for that Ukrainian prosecutor’s removal way back when (presumably before Trump won the presidency), I knew it was a matter of time before they would bald-face lie about having done so, actual evidence be damned.

So far, Ron Johnson has proven me right and you know the others will too, if only to attempt to shield themselves from Trump’s (and his Trumpistas’) wrath.

Kyiv is the official Ukrainian ‘Romanization’ of the Capital city of Ukraine. It was officially instituted in 1995 but has been in use since Ukraine became independent in 1991.

I understand that there are several reasons for the spelling. Among them, differences in the Ukrainian language versus the Russian language*. Additionally, it may serve to differentiate the states of Ukraine versus Russia. And to assert where political power resides.

* One definition of a language versus a dialect is “A language is a dialect with an army and navy” .

It’s not just a spelling change; the two are pronounced differently. Each is the Romanisation of a slightly-different word using Cyrillic letters.

The one pronounced “Key-ev” is the Russian-language name for the city; the one pronounced “Keyeev” is the Ukranian one.

Yes, that probably means that it will be back to being “Kiev” on a global basis by 2025.

I just noticed something really odd. I was skimming through Stonekettle’s twitter feed (is that what it’s called?).

He was posting screenshots of some of the crazy replies he was getting. Two of them have user names based on movies riffed by the original MST3K.

One goes by “the elusive robert danbe” (which is misspelled. It was Denby.) This is from the “Riding With Death” episode.

The other goes by “joe don baker in final j…” This is from the “Final Justice” episode.

Does this mean anything? Of course not. Except probably there’s a goofball out there with multiple twitter accounts.

In the House of Representatives

thoughtco.com
Found this. IANAL.
The House Judiciary Committee decides whether or not to proceed with impeachment. If they do…
The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee will propose a resolution calling for the Judiciary Committee to begin a formal inquiry into the issue of impeachment.
Based on their inquiry, the Judiciary Committee will send another resolution composed of one or more “Articles of Impeachment” to the full House stating that impeachment is warranted and why or that impeachment is not called for.
The Full House (probably operating under special floor rules set by the House Rules Committee) will debate and vote on each Article of Impeachment.
Should any one of the Articles of Impeachment be approved by a simple majority vote, the President will be “impeached.” However, being impeached is sort of like being indicted for a crime. The president will remain in office pending the outcome of the Senate impeachment trial.

I like how the article starts with “Typically, impeachment begins with a vote by the House of Representatives to instruct the Judiciary Committee to determine whether there are sufficient grounds for Congress to impeach the president.” Um, no. This is the third time. There are no typically anything with only three.

Also, if you’re going to run off somewhere else, why be here?

It’s important to dance around about minor political points when you have no idea how to explain why you would want a dangerous narcissist loon in power.

Here’s Wikipedia’s description of Nixon’s impeachment inquiry:

An impeachment process against Richard Nixon began in the United States House of Representatives on October 30, 1973, following the “Saturday Night Massacre” episode of the Watergate scandal. The House Judiciary Committee set up an impeachment inquiry staff and began investigations into possible impeachable offenses by Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States. The process was formally initiated on February 6, 1974, when the House of Representatives passed a resolution, H.Res. 803, giving the Judiciary Committee authority to investigate whether sufficient grounds existed to impeach Nixon[

Note the dates. The inquiry was started in the judiciary in October, 73, and the House didn’t approve the formal initiation until a little over four months later.

It doesn’t matter if a Lizard’s batting for the TrumpGOP, but shitting in the middle of the room and being nasty is the quickest way to get a smiting from Stinky.

To this point, S_S knows this and is just playing the line, so they can play the martyr when they eventually do go over that line.

Best thing to do: either just mock them mercilessly or ignore them altogether; when they don’t get the lulz they crave, they’ll go into hibernation or (eventually) for greener pastures.

- In phone call with Xi in June, Trump raised Biden (and Warren’s) political prospects
- Trump also told Xi he would remain quiet on Hong Kong protests as trade talks progressed …

Linking protests to trade talks doesn’t make much sense. We need to see what was actually in the call.

True, but I believe that Charles finished that choice for Dark once he let his freak flag fly on Twitter and/or FB after his flounce, IIRC

Personally I am always hopeful that someone eventually sees the light. Look at Bill Kristol or Joe Walsh or Jennifer Rubin. They may not align on all issues but they do on the most important ones for now.

Hey, at least you don’t have to share a state with her, since she moved here to TN fairly close to where I am a few years ago because her daughter was going to college around here. I’m guessing one reason why Jackson “drop[ped] out of politics” is because she tried running for a county commissioner spot in Williamson County (one of the richest counties in the US) in 2014 and lost…hard.

This is such an incredible fucking self-own. Pelosi is already positioned to call this bluff the second they transmit it. Then what is the White House’s fallback position in Court after that? They’ll have set an utterly absurd and meritless condition, it will have been met, and then their endless bad faith will be laid bare for everyone to see.

If she calls a vote then “we got her to do this so we can dictate other stuff”

Not sure; there are just way too many people who’ve passed that I’d like to see with that one. Mike Royko, Gene Amole…Ed Quillen…

I am pretty sure that most people here know Mike Royko, but may not be familiar with Gene Amole and Ed Quillen. Both were local Colorado journalists / columnists with long careers who should have been more well known outside of the Rocky Mountain region.

I miss Quillen more than Amole, as he was closer in age to me, and hadn’t turned completely crotchety by the end of his life, but both were excellent writers who chronicled life in Colorado.
