Carryover from last thread: The House Judiciary Committee has held formal authority over initiating an impeachment inquiry since 1813, when it was created.

The Committee on the Judiciary ordinarily has jurisdiction over impeachments, but special committees investigated charges before the Judiciary Committee was created in 1813. The committee then chooses whether to pursue articles of impeachment against the accused official and report them to the full House. If the articles are adopted (by simple majority vote), the House appoints Members by resolution to manage the ensuing Senate trial on its behalf. These managers act as prosecutors in the Senate and are usually members of the Judiciary Committee. The number of managers has varied across impeachment trials but has traditionally been an odd number. The partisan composition of managers has also varied depending on the nature of the impeachment, but the managers, by definition, always support the House’s impeachment action.

Juanita Jean caught a glimpse of that phony baloney Breitbart poll about investigating Rep. Shiff, and responded:

Two things: So we just polled the current customers and staff at the World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon, Inc. and it shows that when asked, “Should Donald Trump be dropped buck ass nakkid into Mexico with ‘I steal children’ tattooed on his chest?” the answer was 107% yes. However, since we let Junior Janchek, Jr. do the math, the margin of error is only 4%.

This does not surprise me. Not in the least.

It’s not that this country was a sterling example of protecting human rights around the world before Trump, but we at least talked a good game, codifying it in our laws and doing it when it didn’t interfere with empire-building, warmongering, or making money.

Now, I wouldn’t blame anyone outside the US for not trusting a damn word we say about anything for a very long time after Trump and his ilk are out of office.

We earned that enmity through Trump and his goons, so now we have earn goodwill back by word and deed.

A whole Hapsburg tertio of needles!

[Embedded content]

As a longtime miniatures (lead soldiers) gamer, I greatly appreciated the picture in this post. But since I had not looked at the Hapsburg Wars for many decades, I decided to go down a rabbit-hole. I just came up and find myself a couple of threads behind.

Anyway, the concepts associated with this picture are fascinating, to me, at least. Here are a few…

From an earlier thread:

1. Early demonstration of the power of the Regimental System.

Tercios were a Spanish unit back in the 1500-1600’s during the transition from pikes to gunpowder. They were one of the early “regimental systems” that allowed veteran soldiers to remain in permanent units (rather than rasing units anew for each campaign), thus preserving their expertise. Because of this reservoir of expertise, tercios were very effective on the battlefield until well past the point where gunpowder weapons should have destroyed them. And eventually, the evolving gunpowder technology did catch up with them.

2. Tercios were associated with the fascists during Spanish Civil War times

In the 20th Century tercios became a popular meme in fascist circles because the Spanish ‘Foreign’ Legion called their regimental organizations ‘Tercios’. These became well known when the Spanish Legion joined Franco’s Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War.

3. The flag started out as a Spanish Royalist Flag, became that of one of the most senior Tercios, and eventually, was a flag of New Mexico

The flag also has an interesting history. The device on it is called the “Cross of Burgundy” The colors are the traditional Spanish colors. This particular flag started out as that of the Tercio Morados Viejos, one of the most senior tercios. Then the flag morphed into something of a standard Royalist Spanish battleflag. And through the Conquistadores, eventually became the flag of New Spain’s territory of what is now known as the State of New Mexico.

(I have no idea whether the gunners are supposed to be historic or scifi-fantasy, though.)

When the only argument you have left against impeachment is “It will make the people who think Trump can break the law with impunity even more angry,” then you’ve lost the moral high ground and need to pack it in. I just read three articles on Washington Monthly that I thought had some nuggets.

#1 Joe Biden Should Be Commended For What He Did in Ukraine

The twisting of this story by Trump and his enablers is a perfect example of all that is ugly and evil about this administration. It is reminiscent of the president’s attacks on John McCain’s time as a POW as well as the way a Goldstar family was maligned during the 2016 campaign. Donald Trump takes the very things that demonstrate integrity and twists them into something odious. Every American should resent the hell out of that because it undermines the values we all hold in common. … to the extent that we value things like courage, integrity, and patriotism, it is in all of our interests to stand up and challenge these kinds of attacks. Joe Biden did what we all hope to see from public servants when he put duty to country first.

We can all find ourselves running around in circles trying to understand various things that Trump has said or done. Frankly, it’s all a waste of time. There is no grounding in reality or strategy involved. Every utterance or action of this president is in service to his own ego. It is that simple.

20 years ago, we were told that Clinton had to be impeached and removed from office because even if you didn’t personally believe he’d broken the law, having in affair in office with a WH page was reprehensible and the honor of the office could only be restored by voting for his conviction.

20 years hence, we’re told that it doesn’t matter that Trump attempted to extort a foreign ally into assisting his reelection campaign in destroying the man he viewed as his strongest opponent. What matters is that a shrinking minority of votes will be angry if he’s removed from office in a process they don’t personally approve of and so we must refrain from doing so because it will “divide the nation.”

Gee, I can’t imagine what changed in these two scenarios…/////

The best of luck to you! I’m going to have a second smaller surgery done on my sciatic area on November 1. Am still quite happy with the big one done in 2015, but need more stabilization below that area. And that big one was really big. May yours work out as well as mine did!

I don’t remember a family argument about Watergate.

I do remember a huge family fight about Vietnam in April 1975. One uncle thought we shouldn’t be leaving because Commies and my dad and my other uncle were all “WE SHOULD HAVE LEFT YEARS AGO.” In more recent years, I’ve wondered if that wasn’t a proxy for the family fight that should have happened over Nixon.

When the story first broke that people from his campaign had broken into the DNC, dad thought “low-level staff, they’re been accustomed to the idea that campaigns keep tons of cash on hand, it was a robbery. Nixon had nothing to do with it.”

When the hearings dragged on, especially John Dean’s testimony, dad thought “staffers on their own initiative went too far, now they’re trying to blame their boss to get shorter prison sentences. Nixon had nothing to do with it.”

When the tapes were released and dad had to recognize that it was all true… it broke his heart. He never again had any high-minded political idealism, he never again cared about long-term ramifications of any candidate’s policy proposals, it was all about his own personal short term convenience (i.e., tax cuts uber alles. “I feel very at peace with all of this, very at peace,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told me in an interview Wednesday.

“Sometimes, I think he is having a limbo contest with himself, to see how low he can go in his rhetoric,” she said. “I think he was surprised that this happened, because he thinks he can do whatever he wants.”

Pelosi remains determined not to give in to the impulses of some Democrats to make impeachment a vehicle for everything about the president that stirs their rage. All of that should await November 2020, she said, when voters will have their opportunity to weigh in on Trump’s policies, his temperament and his character. “So many of the things that people are unhappy about about the president are not about impeachment. That’s about the election. Take it up with the election,” Pelosi said. “If you think he’s a coward on protecting children from gun violence, and you think he’s cruel for not protecting ‘dreamers,’ if you think he is in denial on climate change, take that up in the election. That has nothing to do with what we are doing here. If you think his vocabulary and his behavior and his immorality and his indecency are personally offensive, take it up in the election.”
It took some by surprise when Pelosi declared that “it doesn’t matter” whether Democrats lose their majority in the House over their decision to drive toward impeachment.
But she is not backing down from her contention that the constitutional questions at hand outweigh the politics. “I don’t think that it’s a healthy thing for a country if people just come here and say it’s about winning the next election,” she said.
None of which is to say that her concern for her more vulnerable members is not weighing upon her. “As we take brave steps like this, we have to have a ‘M.A.S.H.’ team to protect those who may be more in danger,” she said, adding that means “owning the ground, not yielding one grain of sand to the Republicans.”

If the Court holds Christians can discriminate, I fully expect websites to spring up listing offending companies. As they should! We need to know who these asshats are. Without a bold leader, there are no bold followers. But without the promise of bold followers, there are no bold leaders.

Reminded me of the old saying:
“There are old leaders; There are bold leaders; But there are no old bold leaders”

Those green logbooks have been around forever. Every place I ever worked in the Navy used them for logging eventful, uneventful, and sometimes snarky (like Christmas Eve at midnight) things.

The whole government uses those.

You can always count on David Brooks. Instead of the typical NY Times effort to interview another MAGAt voter, he has an imaginary conversation with an imaginary Trump supporter.

I’m guessing Sondland ran it by Pompeo and/or the WH first.

Earlier Vogel and Schmidt wrote that Sondland spoke to Trump in between those two texts. However that line from the article has now been edited out, with no explanation given, which is a practice I fucking hate.

What sort of gravitas does The National Review have on conservatives any more? Years ago, they published an essay arguing why President Nixon should resign when it became obvious the jig was up.

If they published such an essay today, would anyone on the right pay attention?

When Jonah Goldberg is talking sense…

Crap, I don’t know what that means. But it can’t be good for the Trump and Rudy show.
