Too bad, so sad. The truth hurts sometimes.
They’d argue that “real” democracy is coming out in the streets to get an unelected politburo to pass a law they demand or get rid of one that has consequences they hadn’t expected, and that elections can only ever put people in place who are beholden to Big Capital.

What it is, is the same sort of bullshit as ‘the swamp’ and ‘the elites’ that the GOP pulls. Funny enough, it’s the same sort of shit where fighting for what’s derided as ‘identity politics’ automatically places you in some sort of golden tower that ignores or denigrates “Real Americans”/”The Working Class”. They’re taking the mantle of authenticity and denying it to everyone else, despite how hard most of the people derided as “The Establishment” have fought their asses off for what crumbs they could get.

They also aren’t really ‘flushable’ in all but the literal sense of “they’ll successfully leave the bowl”, so I hope you aren’t actually flushing them, but if you have a way of keeping them closed up until trash day, I think they’re the best option.
Muni systems are very clear that wipes are the main contributor to terrible solid blockages in their system, and they’re even worse for septic systems (tampons are offenders on both counts as well.)

There’s another reason things turned for the US economy last week… A geopolitical game over oil prices outside US control.
https://t.co/oXJARP3ws7— Shawn Donnan (@sdonnan) March 7, 2020
For over three years, President Vladimir Putin had kept Russia inside the OPEC+ coalition, allying with Saudi Arabia and the other members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to curb oil production and support prices. On top of helping Russia’s treasury - energy exports are the largest source of state revenue - the alliance brought foreign policy gains, creating a bond with Saudi Arabia’s new leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
But the OPEC+ deal also aided America’s shale industry and Russia was increasingly angry with the Trump administration’s willingness to employ energy as a political and economic tool. It was especially irked by the U.S.’s use of sanctions to prevent the completion of a pipeline linking Siberia’s gas fields with Germany, known as Nord Stream 2. The White House has also targeted the Venezuelan business of Russia’s state-oil producer Rosneft.
“The Kremlin has decided to sacrifice OPEC+ to stop U.S. shale producers and punish the U.S. for messing with Nord Stream 2,” said Alexander Dynkin, president of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations in Moscow, a state-run think tank. “Of course, to upset Saudi Arabia could be a risky thing, but this is Russia’s strategy at the moment - flexible geometry of interests.”

Prisoners riot in Italy as coronavirus lockdown blocks visitation rights
An inmate has died after riots erupted at a prison in Italy over fears visits would be banned as part of the coronavirus lockdown.
Tensions over the restrictions triggered a protest in Modena by prisoners angered they would not be allowed to see their loved ones, the Italian daily La Repubblica reported.
Prisoners also revolted at jails in Naples Poggioreale in the south, Frosinone in central Italy and at Alexandria in the northwest.
Rights group Antigone said an inmate had died at the Modena jail, though the circumstances were not yet clear. ‘We had already warned tensions were growing in prisons, and that we feared it could end in tragedy,’ it said in a statement following the revolts.

Australian visitor in Aspen confirmed to have coronavirus after returning home
A woman visiting Aspen from Australia has been confirmed to have COVID-19, the Colorado Department of Health said Sunday in an update.
“We are aware of a confirmed COVID-19 case in Australia with ties to the Aspen community. One woman in her 20s who was visiting Aspen returned home to Australia earlier this week, where she tested positive for COVID-19,” the CDPHE said Sunday in a news release. “The individual had contact with Aspen residents and visitors at social gatherings; some of the people who had contact with the woman have reported experiencing respiratory symptoms.”
[…]
If a person flies all the way from Australia to Aspen, in the winter to presumably ski, then they are not poor. Thus their social gatherings are with the jet set.

On your problems with United Airlines and travelling to the USA from Israel, that makes me wonder about my upcoming trip to Germany in May.
As of yet I have not purchased the tickets from Regina, Sask. to Frankfurt; now I’m wondering if I should. (We don’t often travel by air and always buy refundable tickets, but the hassle would not be something to look forward to.)
If you can postpone a decision on buying the tickets until the end of the month or April, I’d recommend doing that, especially in light of the fact that it’s Germany. My initial flight problems stemmed from the fact that decisions were being made to avoid flights to the country due to the outbreak there, and my outgoing flight and layover in Frankfurt was eventually cancelled as a result.
As it stands, the lat time I checked the Ben Gurion Airport arrivals/departures page today, every flight to and from Germany was listed as “מבוטלת” - cancelled.
There’s a lot of uncertainty that will hopefully be cleared up in the coming weeks.

AIPAC, CPAC, Biogen - all conferences where attendees have since been diagnosed with the disease. There were conferences in China too before they got their heads wrapped around this disease outbreak.
We’ve had time to figure it out here in the US, and Trump frittered away that time by not getting testing ramped up to aggressively test and contain. It’s not going to get any better from here because all the news that will be coming over the next few weeks will be more cases, more deaths, and no sign of containment.

Self quarantine is the current strategy here for those who may have had exposures but not symptomatic. With limited tests available, this also makes sense - they’re triaging the cases to test only those who appear symptomatic.
That’s why getting the tests more widely distributed is absolutely critical. It also means that not enough people are self-quarantining, because they may not be as diligent as Cruz claims to be.
What’s likely next to happen over next week to 10 days is that we’ll learn of more people in DC infected, but Trumpworld will clamp down on any cases within the WH because that’s exactly how they operate.

Just saw on the news, a person in Houston attended an Ash Wednesday Mass has the virus. Theat sat in the back row, but did not participate in drinking from the cup.
Been doing some snooping and this is the only thing I’ve found thus far:
For more than 2 decades, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated an official position to inquirers (eg, lay public, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals) about the risk of infectious disease transmission from a common communion cup. Although no documented transmission of any infectious disease has ever been traced to the use of a common communion cup, a great deal of controversy surrounds this issue; the CDC still continues to receive inquiries about this topic.

But I’m not curious/worried enough to spend $35.99 for the pdf.
This document cites it:

Trump already looks pretty pathetic much of the time when he’s on TV. He’s lost. He’s unsure of himself at least until he gets into one of his rambles, and even those aren’t all that convincing. It’s not a great look.

At our Episcopal Church we have altered the way we do “The Passing of the Peace” among the congregants. No more handshaking. As for communion the cup is wiped if anyone drinks. Most people choose to dip their wafers, though our rector advised us last week not to dunk your fingers and the whole wafer into the wine. She also has sought to make sure we have plenty of hand sanitizer in the church. Given that we are viewed as the left-wing church by most folks around here, our congregation is smallish - so only about 25 to 30 are there at the 8 a.m. service. I shudder to think about the potential for transmission for some of the larger churches in the vicinity.

I hate to say this but if you’re not wiping the cup with bleach or high content alcohol, it’s kinda pointless and kinda dangerous. Can’t you talk them into little cups to individually dunk and drink until this passes?

Dr. Stein, didn’t you do enough damage last election, helping (aided by Russian media outlets) to deny a historic opportunity for Americans to elect the first woman ever as the U.S. president? The founder of Homeland Security knew too much about Obama’s coverups and Islamic terror. When Obama took over, Haney’s work was entirely deleted from the US intelligence system. I believe he was murdered for what he knew and for who he was.

I’m pretty sure it is an alcohol wipe that is used. Personally, I just dip the wafer to where it gets about 1/4 of the wafer damp. One thing our rector is really good about is letting people know that there is no right or wrong way to participate. That makes my wife feel good because she can’t stand or kneel easily due to back surgery.
Ahhh…OK
Now I understand the oil price drop.
Russia refused to join OPEC with a production decrease in response to lower demand. In a effort to stabilize current prices.
So, Saudi Arabia dumped their prices, to specifically punish Russia. And, I guess, force them to drastically reduce production in hopes of driving up the price.
Went to the grocery store this evening, and for the first time the paper isle was definitely showing signs of having been raided, especially for toilet paper.
It still escapes me why people hoard toilet paper. Maybe I’m weird, but when my stash of 12-roll gets half empty I go buy another 12 roll. I just can’t see why I’d need to stash more.
If you’re going to hoard for covid-19, the over the counter medications sounds like something of more value.

I went to Meijer today. When I went last week, the cashier lines snaked all around the store and they were all out of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, bottled water & the usual stuff people buy when they’re in full on panic.
Today they had huge piles of toilet paper in the center aisle and the store was rather empty of customers.

Logic and hoarding don’t play well together. Me? I bought a little extra coffee and 2 packages of medjool dates instead of one. Toilet paper? I have maybe 3 dozen rolls. Don’t need more.

Meanwhile Putin wants to cripple the U.S. shale market. And this sharp downward move, along with the steep decline in 10-year rates will cripple domestic production. The danger lies in these highly leveraged companies and the now sky-high credit spreads. If these companies default, we could see some fallout with some small and regional banks that have the outstanding loans.

In theory he does. Just like the Saudis need oil above $50. For now this is a giant pissing match that poses a huge world economic threat. When combined with COVID-19 it makes the odds of a worldwide recession even higher. I mean Japan just reported a 7.1 percent drop in GDP in the 4th quarter. And that was pre-corona.

If you’re going to hoard for covid-19, the over the counter medications sounds like something of more value.
Sounds like “people” are getting afraid of being quarantined, or otherwise not being able to get out: TP seems always to be a natural first-grab for hoarders: it’s relatively cheap, it doesn’t go bad: you’ll eventually use it up; BUT: it’s something you never want to get caught short of.
But, just anecdotally, I’ve also seen gaps on the drugstore shelves for all sorts of stuff. And this in NYC, where there’s a big drugstore every couple of blocks…
Serious advice. Find a Sticky Note and write the words “SLOW DOWN” on it. Put it somewhere where you’ll see it several times a day.
Because this is going to be a very stressful week and people are going to be rushing about just making shit decision because they didn’t slow down.— Jason McGlothlen (@goddamnedfrank) March 9, 2020

Hmm. Is it McConnell’s decision whether or not the Senate takes a recess for fear of COV-19? And if so, does he get permission from the Orange Clown first? Or does he risk his “majesty’s” displeasure? (Plus the poor optics of The Senate heading for the hills while the Administration says there is nothing to worry about. GOP in disarray and all that.)
re: #254 I Would Prefer Not To
Doesn’t Putin need to sell oil at a high price? Sure, he can crash our market, but he also has bills to pay.
Saudis have been keeping an eye on the oil shale market for years. It’s one reason they want to stabilize the prices - at a level where oil profits are still relatively high while shale oil development remains marginal.
Russia needs the cashflow, so if they price drops they want to keep up profits via volume. It’s what Iran, Libya, Venezuela, and others have tried in the past. And Saudi Arabia since they still have the very large reserves and very large production capacity will react to them not listening by glutting the market and driving prices very low since Saudi Arabia’s production costs are much lower and they can survive a low market better.
Though a global economic (and travel) slowdown due to COVID-19 will allow depress demand. Especially with the still necessary power industry in many countries not being oil dependent for that since they use natural gas or alternate sources.
