A Fantastic Solo Performance by Raul Midón: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

May 16, 2020 | Felix Contreras — Despite the pall cast over so many aspects of our existence these days, Raul Midón’s one man concert from his home studio shines with a vibrant appreciation of the beauty of life, down to its smallest details. It kicks off with two tracks from The Mirror, an album released just as we entered our quarantine period in mid-March: “I Love The Afternoon” and “I Really Want To See You Again,” a song that poetically captures the joy of friendship. Midón’s jazz-influenced vocal phrasing throughout comes to the fore with just his acoustic guitar as accompaniment, illustrating once again why he’s normally one of the bright spots on our musical landscape and even more so at this moment.

SET LIST
“I Love The Afternoon”
“I Really Want To See You Again”
“A Certain Café”
“Disguise”
“You’re The One”

The Laguna Sunrise
Yet another Safer At Home Cocktail, Two servings.
1 ½ cups deep-frozen overnight pineapple pieces.
3 Oz Vodka, unflavored, from overnight in the freezer.
6 Oz cold Chardonnay
6 Oz Orange juice
Blend at length. The extra cold ingredients give us a creamy texture and an undiluted flavor. Pineapple acid forward and a kick in the palate on the finish. Do not operate heavy machinery or dangerous objects. And handle cats with care.

Good morning, all. Found this opinion piece via “HackerNews” —
news.ycombinator.com
Intelligence is simply talking to many people
If I could bring one thing back to the internet it would be blogs

Excerpt:

The other day I searched for an hour and couldn’t find even one. They used to be endless. You’d just click on one you knew on Blogger and either click Blogger’s random blog button, or go to the sidebar of the blog you knew where they always had a list of blogs they liked, sometimes four or 5, sometimes 20 other blogs. And the same with Tumbler.

Blogs used to exist because there were blogging platforms. But Blogger was shut down by Google years ago, and the blogs on there have been disappearing until now you just can’t find really any, and they’re not indexed in search anymore. Tumbler also was used by people to blog about their lives and interests, although there were also a lot of just pictures blogs, but it recently changed its policy and now permits no NSFW content, which compromised basically every blog that mentioned something not completely PG. All the old Tumbler blogs I had bookmarks for I can’t even access anymore because they were deemed by Tumbler to have NSFW content. I think about how those people must feel after putting all that work into making such a special thing and then Tumbler just destroys it. And that’s the end. There’s no way to find blogs, and no one is writing them because there’s no platform for them.

But they would be the one thing I’d bring back to the internet if I could bring one thing back. They’re the thing I miss the most and the most often.

Probably not. But here is what they are saying is on this mission.

The mission will deploy the FalconSAT-8, a small satellite developed by the U.S. Air Force Academy and sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory to conduct several experiments on orbit. The FalconSAT-8 is an educational platform that will carry five experimental payloads for USAFA to operate. In addition, two National Aeronautics and Space Administration experiments will be included to study the results of radiation and other space effects on a materials sample plate and seeds used to grow food. Finally, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, will transform solar power into radio frequency microwave energy which could then be transmitted to the ground.

I find the bolded to be interesting.

That was how O’Neill thought the orbital habitats could pay their way. Be interesting to see if it can actually be made to work.

Gee, so the RNC is figuring out that Joe Biden’s closet is mostly bare of bones?
I guess they just have to fork over some more bucks to those “consultants” to come with something to fuel the Smear Machine with….
(but these are trained professionals, I’m sure they will be able to handle the task!)

Just a WAG, but I’m figuring they will be going with “senile” or “sick” - while touting Trump as being as hale as a Ben Garrison cartoon of himself - or maybe toss in some of the classic “Hunter/Burisma/Ukraine/corruption” BS.

But of course, they can always shift the to the classic “political” attacks: his past by tarring him with eight years of association with Barack Hussein Antichrist; and his future by painting a Biden Administration as a dystopian hellscape run by atheist communist baby-killer gun-grabber America-haters who are going to dismantle the borders, outlaw Christianity and meat, , and force everybody to get gay-married in front of a windmill….
I’m sure they’ll come up with something.

And that last paragraph is only partly snark.

It’s up to y’all who do to make sure that you tell your rep that you do not agree with Sen. McConnell’s plan to make you die for the Dow.

Scottsbluff City Council to conduct in person meeting Monday (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

TL;DR, “we need to get back to normal,” masks will be recommended but people will not be turned away, social distancing will be applied to the council but recommended to attendees.

Scottsbluff has the most active cases by far of any town in the Panhandle.

Good luck, guys, because God isn’t going to save you, and neither will Governor Ricketts.

CAVEAT: it’s in a diary over at Daily Kos, but I saw this interesting electoral map , supposedly from recent polling: showing the Biden/Trump EV breakdown at 309-229 (more than The Orange Anus’s margin in 2016).
Of course, the big problem (as fucking always!) is Florida, but (too close as it is for me), it wouldn’t be a result I’d hate to see on Nov. 4.

BTW, the main theme of the diary is a caution against complacency: a view I would heartily concur with…..

I don’t know why I still waste Sunday mornings watching the gasbag shows, but it was amazing today to see Alex Azar on MTP and Peter Navarro on FTN (or was it the other way around, I think?) using PRECISELY the same words in the same unsolicited bullshit answer “explaining” how this isn’t a choice between lives and the economy because keeping the economy closed somehow kills people too.

And no pushback from either host. Grrrr.

People don’t die from poverty, they die from the associated lack of food, shelter and medical care.

but to these people, poverty is a disease that can only be eradicated through hard work

Sounds like wishful thinking.

From polling, baked-in electoral votes or lean are 232 for Democrats, 204 for Republicans, 102 toss-up.

Toss up states: NE-2, AZ, WI, MI, PA, NC, FL.

I assume that they re-opened the marinas and people are flocking to take their boats out.

Which is fine, they all seem to be keeping a safe distance.

Johnson said the IG’s serve the President, not the orgs they work for. Then he says a few minutes later two IG’s under Obama resigned under his oversight.

GOP leaders are being pretty honest know that they want absolutism in government as an oligarchy (only, of course, when they are the oligarchs). A solid indication that they’ve lost touch with the concept that the government is there to serve the people (all of them!) and simply the executive. Assuming that they ever accepted the concept in the first place.

I’m seeing this online too. That suicides are going to cause more deaths than CV because people can’t work and are losing everything. But, when you ask them for proof, they really can’t answer, as usual.

As if conservatives give a crap about either poverty or suicide. Like most such answers, it’s vapourware which falls apart when you ask even one question.

Right: the typical GOP vision of government service: when there’s a (D) President, honesty, professionalism and disinterested service to the Nation are paramount considerations: under an (R) Pres., though? It’s a mashup of feudalism and Tammany Hall…..

I am pleased to note that the Episcopal Diocese of Eau Claire, noting the scriptural comment that all things may be legal but not all things are beneficial, will not reopen the churches for in person services. They will not meet again on the issue for month, June 13, to consider the issue again. The Bishop’s task force includes at least one MD who’s specialty is epidemiology so that probably has a big impact on why they’re being sensible about this.

In addition his wife is suffering from Covid like symptoms and is in self-quarantine within their home.

I’ll also mention that if you hear any asshat claiming the young can’t get Covid: The girl who died twice

And now for something completely different…an update on the state of the planet from the captain of the “Freewinds,” Scientology’s cruise ship/floating classroom for its highest level, OTVIII. As if she would know.

We have an unusual leaked conference call from Scientology’s private cruise ship the Freewinds. It was intended to be heard only by Scientologists in the ANZO continent (Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania).

The commanding officer of the ship is Sharron Weber, and the call was billed as an analysis of the state of the planet during the global pandemic.

Dense with the loaded language of Scientology, the call was a motivational rally to encourage Scientologists to become more active as Field Staff Members, or FSMs, who act as salespeople, getting a commission for convincing other Scientologists to further their expensive progress up the “Bridge to Total Freedom.” Those they can bring to the org to start a course are called Selectees.

In the call, Weber stresses that the largest period of expansion for Scientology is just around the corner. This claim is as old as Scientology. Active membership at recently opened Ideal Orgs is in the dozens, not hundreds or even thousands.

tonyortega.org

The audio is 34 minutes of Scientologese—I listened to the whole thing and I would like those minutes back. Probably the most important thing for you all to know, coming out of this, is that Scientology is going to keep on keeping on and they are not going to let the pandemic get in their way. They are going to overcome the pandemic. They sound like Trump’s MAGA supporters (and, in fact, some are MAGA supporters, like the notorious Joy Villa, a Scientologist who has shown up to various H’wd events dressed in Trump paraphernalia over the past few years).

My advice to everyone is to add “Scientology orgs” to your list of places to stay away from for the sake of your health.

re: #119 jaunte

It would be great if they would start saying “revealing the traitors” instead of unmasking.

I wrote this previously back when this whole stupid shit was first started way back when. The way I explained it to people that were too self ignorant to understand what had happened who pushed this bullshit:

Local police get tipped off to a drug house that is operating. They go and get a warrant for surveillance of the house. Police are filming and photographing all comings and goings at the house. Hoping to possibly find the bigger supplier for this smaller time operation.
You buy drugs from this house, so of course the cops have you on film coming and going. They check you out because they want to see if maybe you are the “Mr. Big” supplying the place. They find out who you are, what you do, who else you talk to, your life story as they can find it. “Unmask your ass”.
They were not spying on you, you just happen to be doing business with someone they were watching who was doing illegal shit. And they needed to know why and to what extent you were involved.
Moral of story: You don’t want know as a criminal, don’t do business with criminals.

The Scientologist leaders see the MAGAs as a obvious source of gullible people to run their particular grift on. With the obvious disruptions the virus is causing it makes it all the more easy for them to sell their particular cure/explanation of what is happening.
