Speaking of remembering people, the Washington Post has an article about how poorly supermarket chains are protecting their workers, and how workers are getting sick and dying. You might want to save this until later so you can enjoy the music first.

Two threads ago:

re: #251 NO SMOCKING GUN!

The extreme right is insisting the lockdown has nothing to do with the virus, and instead is a conspiracy to bring down their orange messiah.

The Democratic Party, which on a good day might be able to properly organise a cook-out, is able to rope in a worldwide conspiracy of over one hundred countries and countless dead and ill, just to go after Trump?

It is to laugh.

Nevertheless, there are plenty who would believe it anyway, because conservatism isn’t about ascertaining what’s true or even probable (or they would have given up trickle-down economics in the 1880’s).

Just watched the Joker. As usual Phoenix was great, but overall it was an ok movie. Not one of watch again.

At the end, Send in the Clowns played. Sad song. Hubs asked if I knew what it was about (I didn’t, I don’t hear lyrics very well, I have weird ears) so we discussed. I think it’s not just an allegory about love but one about gay love.

Thoughts?

Wikipedia summarises the song this way:

“Send In the Clowns” is a song written by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music, an adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night. It is a ballad from Act Two, in which the character Desirée reflects on the ironies and disappointments of her life. Among other things, she looks back on an affair years earlier with the lawyer Fredrik, who was deeply in love with her but whose marriage proposals she had rejected. Meeting him after so long, she realizes she is in love with him and finally ready to marry him, but now it is he who rejects her: he is in an unconsummated marriage with a much younger woman. Desirée proposes marriage to rescue him from this situation, but he declines, citing his dedication to his bride. Reacting to his rejection, Desirée sings this song. The song is later reprised as a coda after Fredrik’s young wife runs away with his son, and Fredrik is finally free to accept Desirée’s offer

By someone smarter than me:

The United States cannot have all Mail In Ballots. It will be the greatest Rigged Election in history. People grab them from mailboxes, print thousands of forgeries and “force” people to sign. Also, forge names. Some absentee OK, when necessary. Trying to use Covid for this Scam!

Let’s not let them get away with this argle-bargle, shall we? Thr reason the repugs want mail-in ballots not to happen is they provide a paper trail. That makes it much harder, if not impossible, to steal elections.

That’s the only reason they need, all else is distraction.

re: #25 A hollow Gandalfian voice says, VOTE, you fools!

Exactly. Starting with the application your name is referenced with the voter registration lists. From that they also know what ballot to send you (for closed Primaries like PA). And when it is sent back and opened by the county election people your signature is checked against with what they have on record from previous elections.

The leader of the Unicameral is calling the state legislature into special session in July to deal with the budget shortfall.

The state is estimated to come up about $800,000,000 short due to the pandemic destroying the state economy (plus Trump’s tariff war).

This is what happens when you have a conservative balanced budget amendment in your state constitution: They are going to plan what to cut from the budget for the next fiscal year. (Fiscal years in Nebraska start July 1.)

Because Republicans control the legislature, and they must follow the leaders of their religious faith, they are calling the legislature, staffers, statehouse workers, &c all in personally to do what they can do over a meeting app on a computer.

Democratic legislators have been meeting virtually for weeks for strategy sessions over legislation. They invited the Republicans, but GOP legislators refused.

It’s from a Sondheim musical. The singers were once married, he’s now chasing someone much younger than he is, and she isn’t quite telling him what a fool he’s being. The resonances are all of the ” two old warhorses” variety, IMO.

Same here. Plus mail ballots for Broadwater’s precinct are two different ballots, depending on whether you live within the village limits or not.

Ballots for people outside town do not include election for the village board, cemetery district, or village referenda.

Look Up In The Sky! Honor Flight Formation To Pay Respect To Our Veterans This Afternoon

The Memorial Squadron based in Livermore is putting together a flight to honor Veterans this afternoon.

Joining the Memorial Squadron for this honor flight will be the “Bonanzas To Oshkosh” group, also known as B2OSH.

A total of twenty aircraft have signed up to participate in this flight.

All planes and pilots have gone through extensive training in formation flying and are qualified to fly in close formation.

The Memorial Squadron is organized and led by Mark Becker who flies a Beechcraft Mentor. Mark is a Marine attack helicopter pilot who saw service in the Middle East. Members of the Squadron include five pilots located in Concord and other pilots from the NorCal area.

The B2OSH Group is a nationwide group of Bonanza pilots who train throughout the year to fly in close formation.

They hold the world’s record for the largest civilian formation flight which stands at 157 aircraft.

Both the Memorial Squadron and the B2OSH will be formed up into a single large formation and will pass over Concord at about 2 p.m. today.

Necessity as the Mother of Invention: “Twin Soliloquies” and “Send in the Clowns”

Let’s take a look at “Twin Soliloquies” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific and “Send in the Clowns” from Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. Now, I know what you’re thinking. These two songs have absolutely NOTHING in common. One is a duet and the other is a solo. South Pacific premiered in the late 1940’s, but A Little Night Music wasn’t written until the early 70’s. The duet is a sweet depiction of two people falling in love. The other deals with lost love and disillusionment. So what is the common thread here? Well, both of these numbers were written for very specific practical reasons.

Small-town newspaper, hammered by loss of revenue, finds new life with new owners (Omaha World-Herald)

TL;DR, the owner of the 500-ciruclation weekly county paper said his advertising dried up due to the pandemic, and he could not afford to keep a $5,000 a year newspaper open any longer.

A person who’d worked for the paper in the past offered to buy it from the owner, and he gave it to her for free.

It’s because they see themselves as a good person…in spite of the shit they’ve pulled they know isn’t good, and the impulses they have they suspect aren’t good.

Given a choice between being what they believe they should be and redefining “good” to incorporate shit they want but know is bad, they’ve chosen the latter.

Yeah but it’s not about using words to describe, but instead to dictate a story precisely that contradicts evidence, because the story makes you the unquestionable hero who is Right (correct) and Right (moral) in the face of ultimate depravity.

Brazil’s former health minister described Jair Bolsonaro’s March visit to meet with US President Donald Trump as a “corona trip” Wednesday, noting that several members of the Brazilian president’s team tested positive for Covid-19 after the trip.

Bolsonaro and his aides met with Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and other American officials during their last US trip. Days later, Bolsonaro’s press secretary, Fabio Wajngarten, tested positive for Covid-19.

Several more members of Bolsonaro’s close circle contracted the virus soon after, raising concerns that the two presidents had been exposed as well.

“What I know is that it was soon after (Bolsonaro) made a visit to the United States that they went to Florida and they were all having dinner with Mr. Trump, and his communication guy … came back in the plane with the disease and from the people that went with him, 17 tested positive in about 15 days after they arrived,” Brazil’s former Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “So this trip was really a corona trip”.

Or, watch the very knowledgeable Gregg Jarrett, better known as a Trump ass kisser extraordinaire:

In August 2017, Jarrett called for a grand jury for Hillary Clinton over her email controversy. A day later, when a grand jury was impaneled by special counsel Robert Mueller in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections, Jarrett said that grand juries were an “undemocratic farce”

Jarrett likened the FBI to the KGB, the Soviet security agency, for which he received PolitiFact’s “Pants on Fire” rating.

In the context of possible collusion between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and the Russian government, Jarrett has said that any such collusion would not be a crime…According to PolitiFact, the statement is false.

Jarrett has said that former FBI Director James Comey may have broken the law by releasing a memo to press wherein Comey recounted a conversation with President Trump where Trump requested that Comey end the investigation into Michael T. Flynn.University of Texas School of Law professor Bobby Chesney said Jarrett’s assertion was “nonsense”

Blind Faith made a huge mistake when they let Ginger Baker in. As soon as he joined, Clapton realized that he was going to be in the same shit that make him want to quit Cream. He admitted that at the Hyde Park gig that he was already withdrawing from the band.

It’s very irritating that covid19 is all around Trump, but the asshole himself doesn’t seem to be catching it.

The virus is allergic to Trumps and is avoiding them.

Another cell moved in from the south. Quarter-sized hail, rain like a cow pissing on a flat rock. Two + inches so far. This may be good (?!?) news in that when we get a twenty degree temperature drop and rain before a squall line moves into to Metro area from the west, it often falls apart coming off the Balcones Fault complex.

Nebraska:

Positive cases: 12,134 (+145)
Doubling rate: 19 days (accelerating)
Deaths: 150 (+3)
Doubling rate: 22 days

nebraska.maps.arcgis.com

Cases reported on Saturdays and Sundays to the state are usually lower than weekdays, because many public health districts are closed on the weekend and do not report. Weekend figures are shown on Mondays.

Probably tomorrow’s numbers will be low too because of the Memorial Day holiday

Tuesdays seem to be the catch-up day for reporting anyway.

The U.S. is now at 98,011 COVID deaths according to latest statistics.
We will almost certainly be at 100,000 by Tuesday.
Fuck Trump.
Fuck the GOP.
That is all.

Opinion column in the Los Angeles Times:

Column: I’ve gotten hate mail my whole career. But I’m shocked by the anti-Semitic rants from Trump supporters lately

Very disheartening read. We have to pry Tang the Conqueror and his political party out of the government November 3.

I would happily not have Derek and the Dominoes if it was due to Blind Faith staying together (with a different drummer. Perhaps Karen Carpenter… < grinning, ducking & running… > )

A visiting job in Lexington, KY almost turned into a permanent job. Then I found something in New England. I loved Lexington and would still want to live there, but seeing the crazy coming out ALMOST makes me happy we moved.

Today I had to jump into the super market to get paprika and probably 95% of customers and employees were wearing masks.

But out there are the Free State folks who are as rabid and bad as anything you’ll find in Kentucky. A couple of weeks ago a bunch of them came to Concord, the Capital, to violate playground restrictions in order to prove a point: My right to spread germs trumps your right to health. There are pockets of crazy everywhere.

Hiring Karen Carpenter would have been great just to rip her away from her domineering soulless brother. She was a pretty good jazz drummer in the beginning.
