Also, got CL’d on that last thread:

Twitch forces U.S. Army to stop tricking viewers with fake giveaways

The U.S. Army has a Twitch channel that it uses to fish for potential recruits. Last week, it came under fire for issuing bans to viewers who asked about war crimes. This week, a report by The Nation dug deeper, pointing out, among other things, that the channel had a habit of running fake controller giveaways that redirected viewers to a recruitment page. Following widespread scrutiny, Twitch says it’s forced the Army to stop.

According to The Nation, the giveaways—which took place “repeatedly” in chat—offered viewers a chance to win an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller. Clicking the associated link, however, would send viewers to a recruitment page “with no additional mention of a contest, odds, total number of winners, or when a drawing will occur.”

Upon learning of this yesterday, Twitch viewers and streamers reacted with disbelief.

It’s now clear to me how Trump managed to lose money owning casinos, a business where “The House always wins”:

He just gambles, with no sense of probabilities. Every ‘bet’ he’s made during the Pandemic has been a losing one - ignoring it in January didn’t keep it out. Kinda-sorta closing off travel from China didn’t keep it out. Saying it would go away didn’t make it go away. Saying we’d reopen on Easter didn’t make it safe to do so. Saying states should reopen on Memorial Day didn’t work out, either. Saying the plague has passed didn’t make it so.

Now, he’s gambling with the lives of children and their parents and grandparents, with the lived of teachers and staff and their families, and indeed with every community everywhere that opening school when the Pandemic is reaching new highs every day will not kill a lot more people, in an easily documented way, and life will go back to normal by November for him.

re: #37 Charles Johnson

The science isn’t on their side, because the CDC made it clear that you have to meet conditions to consider reopening, and Trumpists have gone in on the idea of ignoring the guidelines altogether.

The GOP doesn’t care about those facts, or logic. The fact is that countries that reopened their schools had the pandemic under control, were able to contact trace and test, and have robust methods for all of this.

Trumpworld has failed on every front, and they don’t care about contact tracing or testing, as Trump’s statements make explicit.

You can’t reopen schools into the teeth of a pandemic. It just guarantees further spread and where you have districts needing to make plans for how to announce deaths of students and staffers from covid19, you need to reassess reopening.

Want to reopen safely? Wear a fucking mask and mandate it for everyone. That gets transmission rates below 1, we get the testing and tracing done, and we can squash covid19 like every other rational nation on the planet.

We wont do any of that with Trump in office, or mendacious media that still plays magic balance fairy bulkshit with this.

Not sure how Trump* is going to be able to “right” that script, anyway. That’s the flip side of our relying on the Electoral College to legitimize a Presidential election: a candidate can “win” (as we saw in 2016) by a narrow margin in just a few states, but unless that margin is backed up by real *popularity* , said states can easily flip back the next time. Which (hopefully) will be the case this year. Big time.

*”Trump” as President, of course, but seeing as how he and his creatures have turned the Republican Party into, basically, a personality cult, his *unpopularity* may have a reverse-coattail effect on “subsidiary” races, i.e. Senate/HoR/Governorships/Statehouses (the last being VERY important, IMO) - and lead to poor GOP performance downballot. I.e. Good Riddance….

I see. So, the TRUMP ADMINISTRATION is bragging, today, about how they’re mercifully reducing harmful regulations and federal demands and such things WHILE AT THE SAME TIME demanding that every state, city, and county in the U.S. open their schools in a month no matter who has to get sick or die?

Do I have that right?

Deal With The Devil, Marie Brenner, Vanity Fair, August 2017

In 1973, a brash young would-be developer from Queens met one of New York’s premier power brokers: Roy Cohn, whose name is still synonymous with the rise of McCarthyism and its dark political arts. At 27, Donald Trump took the ruthless attorney as his sometime guide, learning many of the tactics that would inexplicably propel him to the White House. MARIE BRENNER untangles the symbiosis that bound them until Cohn’s death from AIDS in 1986

And as Trump’s first major project, the Grand Hyatt, was set to open, he was already involved in multiple controversies. He was warring with the city about tax abatements and other concessions. He had hoodwinked his very own partner, Hyatt chief Jay Pritzker, by changing a term in a deal when Pritzker was unreachable—on a trip to Nepal.

My emphasis: so there is history between DT and Gov. Pritzker from way back. Well, well.

For author Sam Roberts, the essence of Cohn’s influence on Trump was the triad: “Roy was a master of situational immorality…. He worked with a three-dimensional strategy, which was: 1. Never settle, never surrender. 2. Counterattack, counter-sue immediately. 3. No matter what happens, no matter how deeply into the muck you get, claim victory and never admit defeat.” As columnist Liz Smith once observed, “Donald lost his moral compass when he made an alliance with Roy Cohn.”

The article goes on to connect Roger Stone (and Manafort) to Cohn and Trump, starting in 1979.

Resolute Slinkee? WTF? Someone has been talking to him about the Goya on the desk.

Reducing harmful regulations to them means allowing meat packing plants to speed up production and not make accommodations to keep their employees safe, so it’s the exact same thing as packing children back into schools.

Covid Update.

Back from my walk,

Saw my pulmonologist yesterday. Couldn’t get an appointment for about a month because he was working the hospital circuit.

He had the results of my CT scan and Pulmonary function test (didn’t study).

The bad news is that I do have some lung damage. He agrees it’s not from Covid, because I had SOB (shortness of breath) prior to the Covid. He thinks he can treat, but wants to treat the effects of Covid first. I’m taking steroids for two weeks and I will follow up in two months.

The good news is that I’m not dying nor is the damage extensive. Since I don’t smoke he thinks the damage may have been caused by an infection, but can’t do blood work cause the covid going to cover up a lot of other stuff.

I’m still writing comedy and hope to do an online show soon. I will invite you and would love your support. (don’t worry you don’t have to pay).

Peace and love and FT

Stuart

Way back during the Bush Administration, I remember a Conservative telling me that waterboarding isn’t torture, because the detainees could have stopped it at any time by telling their interrogators what they wanted to know.

I told him that, in that case, the Spanish Inquisition didn’t torture, because the alleged heretics could stop it any time by confessing and recanting.
