Bernouts really are cut from the same cloth as Red Hats.
Someone in our community FB page asked why people weren’t wearing masks in the local Market Basket supermarket, and the responses were about 4:1 “because FREEDOM!” I had the temerity to post that while some in the community prize “freedom” over the welfare of the community, I noticed that compliance was very high and therefore many in the community actually do worry about each other; and I was almost immediately deluged with “you are litteraly (sic) the dumbest MF here!” and then a bunch of Qanon-adjacent bullshit. For a moment I thought about fighting back. Then I just dropped out of the group. I want to leave this fucking backward New England town so badly. Gotta get my kids through school, and then we’ll see.

He got remarried in March. Doesn’t seem like someone who didn’t have a lot of time left would do that.

Apparently it was a marriage to a longtime partner: ISTM exactly the sort of thing someone who figured they did not have a lot of time left would do. YMMV.
Anyway, the NYT piece mentioned that he had been on “blood thinners”, and had been hospitalized for “brain bleeding” issues, so probably maybe NOT COVID-19. This time.

Buy some commemoratives. I’m going to stop in next week and try to get the Bugs Bunny and Ruth Awawa stamps. I’ve bought about 20 different sheets of commemoratives this year so far. I think of them as art or design pieces.

I’ll second that.
Whenever I go to buy sheets of stamps, I usually get a couple of packs of the simple “flag” Forevers, to use on bills; but I always like to send anything that I think an actual human being is going to look at and open with a nice, big, colorful commemorative.
I’m still working, though, on a couple of sheets I got last fall: I’ve realized that it takes quite a while for me to work through 20-40 “real” letters.
Victim of technology, I guess…
Gratuitous charity event promotion. I’ll throw this out here once, then shut up about it:
With all the Covid-19 fun this year, SGDQ had to cancel its usual early-July in-person speedrunning marathon/convention, but they got their act together in time to do a mostly-remote week-long charity marathon. It begins at noon Eastern on August 16 and runs for the usual GDQ 6.5-ish days.
Games Done Quick puts on two major charity marathons a year. In the past it’s been in front of a live convention audience and streamed to the rest of the world at twitch.tv This year it sounds like there will be a small studio crew of channel regulars doing hosting for speedrunners doing their runs from home.
Speedrunning is the act of completing a game as quickly as possible - sometimes simply through perfected play, sometimes by aggressively exploiting glitches, but always going as fast as one can. GDQ events tend to focus on shorter speedruns in the 15 minute to 2 hour range, with a few longer games, usually RPGs. This year there is a FF7R speedrun in an overnight slot expected to go under 8 hours, and the anchor game next Saturday is Pokemon Shield at about 5.5 hours. GDQ doesn’t always pick the fastest runners in the world - though they average about one world record per marathon - but usually has a full couch of players providing color commentary and occasional invective about what is happening onscreen. Not every speedrun is exciting, but many are genuinely entertaining even if you don’t enjoy the game.
Since this is the summer event, the charity they are raising money for is Doctors Without Borders. SGDQ has been Doctors Without Borders’s largest single fundraiser event for several years now, last year raising just over $3 million through direct donations and merchandise sales (mostly theyetee.com ) and I expect to throw a few hundred dollars their way over the next week. Donations qualify you for raffle prizes and also let you influence the stream content in various ways, like bonus games or naming game characters.

The coronavirus pandemic has slammed the brakes on this year’s Philly Naked Bike Ride.
The annual event, which usually draws thousands of nude cyclists for a trip around Philadelphia and its tourist sites, had been set for later this month. But organizers who had been gearing up for it said the city’s COVID-19 cases made them halt their planning.
