If only someone had warned him to wear a mask, surround himself with people wearing masks, socially distance himself and avoid large crowds of people not wearing masks…

2020 can’t hate us this much, so I’m refusing to entertain the thought that he managed to infect Biden. Thank god the Biden family members in the audience Tuesday were smart enough to wear masks. I wish nothing but the worst on those sitting on Trump’s side who refused to do the same.

All Washington Republicans who developed the disease had mild cases and did just fine. The only noted Republican who died was Herman Cain who never held an elective office. As CNN is noting, there are potentially many senior people in Washington who may have been exposed including Pelosi. The markets seem to be dropping for now.

Literally just caught up now.

BWS posted a video earlier today of the early voting line at the Fairfax County (Va) Govt Center. Here is a pic from about 4 hours later in the day as I fulfill my civic duty.

After gaming out all the currently identified dystopias, I concluded early voting in person was my best choice.

He may have a serious case or it may be a mild or asymptomatic case. Any outcome is possible.

From what we’ve seen, it usually does start off relatively mild but can then quickly become a serious or even life-threatening case. People who’ve survived severe cases describe it as like having a case of the flu at first….but then the next thing they know, they’re having to be rushed to the hospital.

Not to mention COVID’s propensity to attack the cardiovascular system - and that right there could well be Trump’s “Achilles Heel”. I’m almost 100% certain that he had a major cardiovascular incident within the last year.

Indeed. But I can speculate that if Trump ends up incapacitated (in an ICU at Walter Reed, intubated or on life support) prior to November 3rd, that’ll swing the election. And it could demoralize GOP voters enough that they choose to stay home on election day, which would affect the downballot races.

If he has a bad, but not fatal case of it, he could very well be on a ventilator election day.

Anecdotes I’ve been hearing about how this all goes down:

If it goes bad, when you become symptomatic, it goes down hill to being rushed to the hospital within a day or two.

Also (take this with the I’m not a doctor but I heard a few say this grain of salt) Trump could have had it for a minimum of about 3-ish days if the PCR test found it, but he wouldn’t be contagious until today or tomorrow if that’s the case. If he had it longer though…

Biden and Chris Wallace and anyone at the debate needs to be tested stat.

In an earlier thread there was a discussion on the announcement of charges against Wohl and Burkman.

Thursday night, Rachel Maddow had the Michigan Attorney General on to talk about the the Burkman&Wohl case. The AG noted that the criminal robo-calls were made in multiple states and that the AG’s from those states worked with her to investigate these crimes.

This is a hint that the two clowns may be facing charges in a number of other states as well as Michigan.

There’s a reasonably good chance that Trump was not contagious yet. (Assuming the information on the contagious window in the MedCram videos is correct)

The PCR test can start to detect SARS-CoV2 about 1 day before people generally start shedding. The paper test generally can start to detect it about 1 day after people start shedding.

This Administration is so mendacious that I find it hard to take anything that they say at face value.

At a minimum, everything seems very conveniently timed to allow Trump to back out of the losing debates. And to try and recast himself from being an obnoxious bully and jerk, to being sympathetic.

I guess that I can hope that for once he is telling the truth and really is deathly ill. Rather than his usual just lying to us because he thinks it is short term beneficial to him.

I agree. While I certainly wouldn’t put it past anybody in the Trump WH or campaign to at least toy with the idea of faking a COVID outbreak to get sympathy/be able to manipulate negative news, etc.., whether they would actually DO it is another matter. I See a LOT of downside if the scam ever gets exposed (not least, I would think, from the families of actual virus victims) , and given the colander-like info security in the Admin, that would be more than likely.

So I was just looking for “current” covid mortality, and ran across this. It looks like the death rate for the 65-74 age group is just over a half-percent. I guess that includes the assumption that the health-care system hasn’t broken under the strain, or other horrible contingencies.

But don’t forget that obesity is a major factor in COVID death rates. There’s studies out there that show there’s a link between obesity in men and higher fatality rates. Not so much of a problem with women, as fat is distributed differently between men and women. Visceral fat (belly fat) is a real problem…..and Trump sure as hell has a lot of visceral fat, that’s for damn sure.

Oh, sure, he’s at the “greater danger” end of the statistics — but it’s way too soon to be planning the funeral. And given the number of asymptomatic cases, I’m thinking that there’s some kind of natural immunity working here too, which would presumably operate whatever your physical condition. 25th amendment doesn’t allow for selecting a successor president, only for certifying the president’s incapacity. Replacing the VP would take amazing timing (VP gone, president still alive, new VP chosen and confirmed, then the president kicks it), so I think we can assume that chain of succession is what would operate.

Only those with blood that was too acidic or too alkaline survived (the alcoholic and the crying baby) — everyone else died.

I don’t know…..what you point is true that Trump has quite possibly the best medical care available. But look at Boris Johnson over in the UK; he was in seriously bad condition - and he’s 18 years younger than Trump and it was looking touch and go for a little bit there and he doesn’t have the various health issues that Trump has.* He pulled through, but his blasé attitude about COVID certainly changed.

That is (IMO) the biggest reason why I don’t buy into the theories about this being some effort on his part to generate “sympathy” or to BS people into buying a “miracle cure.” The man has spent literal months downplaying the threat of this virus and assuring the MAGAts that he’s in no danger of either contracting it or succumbing to it. It’s part of his whole “strong man” persona that he proudly walks around without a mask and continues his rallies despite the threat of infection. Just the announcement that he’s got it is sending shockwaves through the wingnut community.

At this point, it’s not a sudden illness that has struck the man down so much as it is karmic justice. 200K deaths back, he might have been able to generate some sympathy and convince people to put aside their hatred of him. Now? That well’s run dry.

While that’s certainly plausible, I feel like there are important differences between Boris Johnson’s persona in the UK and Donald Trump’s persona here. I could be wrong - it happens quite often - but I feel like BoJo hasn’t engendered the level of personal animosity that Trump has. So whereas Johnson’s getting sick kind of brought out the whole, “I hate his politics but I don’t really wish him ill, stiff upper lip old chap” phenomenon, Trump’s contracting the disease is going to 1) make him a bigger personal asshole, and 2) subsequently cause a lot of people to say, “I really don’t give a shit about you, have fun with your respirator.”

COVID-19 test results delayed by cyberattack will soon reach Nebraska’s dashboard (Omaha World-Herald)

The coronavirus numbers displayed on Nebraska’s online data dashboard are expected to change significantly over the next few days as the state adds testing data that was delayed because of the cyberattack on Nebraska Medicine’s computer systems.

The Nebraska Medicine Clinical Lab and the Nebraska Public Health Lab process coronavirus tests and are housed on the Nebraska Medicine/University of Nebraska Medical Center campus. Many of Nebraska Medicine’s computer systems weren’t working after a Sept. 20 cyberattack.

During the shutdown, results from tests run through those labs weren’t always being sent to the state’s COVID-19 data reporting system.

And:

A spokeswoman for HHS said several thousand new results will be added, affecting the totals for tests by date, total tests, total positives and positives by date.

Nebraska’s COVID-19 numbers have been on a worrisome upswing.

On Wednesday, 520 new cases were reported statewide, for a seven-day average of 469 new cases, according to data from the New York Times.

On Sept. 1, the daily case count was 287, with a seven-day average of 314.

Well, Mike Pence’s visit to Carter Lake, Iowa probably wasn’t the barn burner he was hoping for (he had about 275 people in a warehouse).

Vice President Mike Pence told Iowans and Nebraskans on Thursday that he and President Donald Trump need their help in Iowa and in Omaha’s swing district next door.

Pence had a message for a crowd of about 275 people in a Carter Lake warehouse: “The road to victory runs straight through Iowa.” He said Iowans will help reelect Trump and Pence in 2020, just as they did in 2016.

“Men and women of Iowa, we’ve got to decide right here and right now that Joe Biden will never be president of the United States of America,” Pence said.

He said Nebraskans “need to go to work, too.”

The Biden campaign, after hosting several virtual visits because of the pandemic, sent Jill Biden, Joe Biden’s wife, and Doug Emhoff, Sen. Kamala Harris’ husband, to Papillion on Saturday.

On Thursday, Pence visited two states with a single campaign stop in Carter Lake, the only part of Iowa on Nebraska’s side of the Missouri River, which was orphaned when an ice jam moved the river in 1877.

Pence wore a mask during his seven-minute ride from Eppley Airfield in Omaha to PVS Structures in Carter Lake, which builds galvanized metal parts. He took his mask off to speak. About a quarter of those in the crowd wore masks.

Johnson was popular in Britain before he was diagnosed.

He’s not that well-liked but he’s got charisma, sufficient to let him fail upward a lot. He never actively downplayed the situation with COVID-19 in the UK and has continuously pushed everyone to take precautions, repeatedly stating this is a dangerous disease that we need to work hard to defeat.

It’s also worth pointing out that when Johnson was being treated in hospital (he was on supplemental oxygen for over a week in an ICU bed) it was a regular NHS hospital, not some military medical establishment like Walter Reed or a private rich-toffs-only four-star medical facility. This is not uncommon for our senior pols, even the Conservatives.

I am. I relocated my home office out of the basement into the front room about a month ago. It’s working out so far. My outings from the house continue to be restricted to needed groceries/pharmaceuticals, picking up food for treats, and volunteering at church - making sure I keep my mask on while I’m there, even if others aren’t. We had a scare yesterday when our daughter, the junior fishspawn, was showing symptoms, but our fears were swiftly allayed when the doctor diagnosed her with strep throat and sent us home with some antibacterials. “This is extortion by the Department of Education, there’s no two ways about it,” Board member Patricia Good said at the emergency meeting Thursday.

The Broward vote is the latest chapter in a saga that has pitted local school leaders in Florida against the state. As counties and schools in areas hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic made plans to start the school year with the safety of teachers and students in mind, Corcoran and DeSantis pre-empted those plans with a demand that campuses reopen to students — or risk losing state cash.

But for not wearing masks, we wouldn’t be in this position: 210,000+ dead, millions sickened, and a wrecked economy.

Now? Trump was just at Bedminster doing a fundraiser and photo ops for attendees - all without wearing masks. He was in Virginia and his other golf businesses in the past week. All now are potential superspreader situations.

ALL OF THIS WAS AVOIDABLE.

Trump wont admit he was wrong. He wont suddenly start wearing masks because that’d be an admission he was wrong, and he thinks that’s a sign of weakness, so he’s going to keep doing what he’s always been doing - lying to the nation nonstop.

“The event went ahead after the White House learned that one of the president’s closest aides, Hope Hicks, had tested positive for the disease.”

Washington Post: “After White House officials learned of Hicks’s symptoms, Trump and his entourage flew Thursday to New Jersey, where he attended a fundraiser at his golf club in Bedminster and delivered a speech. Not his record for 4 years

Maybe some good news:. Itll be harder to claim it was “election fraud” if/when his poll numbers tank a whole month before 11/3

American voters do take seriously the health of a President, or a candidate seeking the Presidency. It’s something do they look at, even though it may be more of a subconscious thing. Those White House insiders may well be right - this could doom Trump’s re-election prospects, and if he ends up hospitalized (or otherwise incapacitated) as a result, yeah….that’s pretty much game over.

Biden shouldn’t suspend his campaign because Trump contracted covid19 through his incompetence, failures, and refusal to mask up.

Biden should put the hammer down and destroy Trump at the polls. Utterly and totally. We remember what Trump and the right wing lunatics did when Hillary campaigned with walking pneumonia. They made all kinds of nonsensical claims about how Hillary was on her death bed and worse.

The only other time I remember pundits pulling this routine was when McCain announced back in ‘08 that he was suspending his campaign in order to help work on legislation to deal with the on-going recession. There was some muttering in ‘12 that Obama should suspend to deal with the fallout from Benghazi, but nobody ever seriously suggested that Romney suspend. And all we heard in ‘16 when Hillary acknowledged her diagnosis of walking pneumonia was not “Trump should suspend” but “HILLARY’S HEALTH IS TOO IMPORTANT TO GO ON! There is, as of Thursday night, very little information about who might have had contact with the Trumps, Hicks, and any others in their orbit who may have been exposed to the disease. Certainly, Steven Mnuchin did, and he’s been meeting with Pelosi daily. She, in turn, has met with her leadership team, and with many members of her caucus. The same is true of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who had direct contact with Trump. And then, of course, there is the woman of the hour, Amy Coney Barrett. She has definitely interacted with Trump—several times. And she’s already had interviews with a number of Republican senators.

it is really bloody dangerous for democracy when the president’s health becomes an issue during an election. Here’s a nice splainer [see electionlaw link below] from election law expert Rick Hasen on what happens if a candidate dies. The answer is, the parties choose a successor. Or at least, that’s what the answer should be. But we currently have eight Supreme Court Justices, a divided Congress, a Republican Party that has collapsed in on its leader like a black hole absorbing all light, millions of votes already cast, and a heavily armed population that is freaking the fuck out. We really don’t need another thing!

For four years we’ve endured daily chaos and bullying and degradation and humiliation. And now through their own pig ignorant carelessness these amoral ghouls have plunged the country even deeper into uncertainty by risking their own lives and the lives of thousands of people who come into contact with them.

And for what? For an election they were probably always going to lose because they couldn’t be bothered to lift a finger to keep the country safe?

Not many are questioning whether this is spin to avoid another possibility: Trump gave it to Hope Hicks, not the other way round.

That would also pretty much ruin his waivers for his rallies. If he knowingly had the disease, that would invalidate those and open him up directly to lawsuits from both attendees at his rallies and the cities which hosted them.

Tulsa ended the waivers for his rallies when Cain acquired covid19 at Tulsa and died within weeks of covid19. The waivers aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. Attending Trump events is akin to a decimation: 10% of those showing up will end up sick or dying (Trump included).

So last night I had a very strong urge to start writing a novella where Trump got sick this week, because that would just be the most stupid dramatic thing that could happen.

Dammit, 2020.

Notably the quick outline I generated included a nuclear exchange and the Russians rolling over Eastern Europe before the French and Brits threaten MAD.

Yeah, not gonna write that now.

So what I want to happen next is for Mr. Trump to get very sick… and not die. But get stuck on a vent for a month through the election and emerge in early December a hundred pounds lighter and with obvious medical consequences, unable to trash up the election cycle with his treason and incitement.

For a male around Trump’s age, the mortality from COVID-19 is in the neighborhood of 10%.

The percentage that need medical intervention is much higher.

The pundits doing the pundit thing… this is ludicrous.

Biden shouldn’t suspend his campaign because Trump contracted covid19 through his incompetence, failures, and refusal to mask up.

Trump brought this disaster on himself. Biden is under no obligation to help Trump. None. Less than none. Trump endangered everyone at the first debate as no one on Trump’s side was masked up. They are a menace and a clear and present danger to the Union.

Biden took the threat seriously and campaigned from his basement for months in an effort to keep everyone safe. Trump mocked him for staying inside and not traveling to speak to crowds of people.

Biden may need to curtail travel and events that attract crowds for safety’s sake, but he sure as hell doesn’t need to pause his campaign out of a sense of ‘fairness’ to the current infection in the white house.

Trump went to Nevada and ignored state masking/social distancing guidelines.

Trump went to Bedminster in NJ and ignored state masking/social distancing guidelines.

Trump is responsible for all that follows.
Trump’s responsible for all that preceded this - the failure to deal with covid19 - all he’s done is lie, ignore health experts’ guidance, and purposefully refused to mask up because he thinks that makes him look weak.

Covid19 saw that and was like. Challenge… ACCEPTED.

Because let’s be honest, none of them would be really voting for Pence, they’d be voting for the rotting corpse next to him.

The list of ways that such would be a negative for him start with “He got sick in the first place” and go from there. Media outlets covering the WH should refuse to meet with any Trumpist unless they’re masked. Trumpworld is a superspreader event, and they don’t care about anyone or anything.

Media outlets should protect their reporters by insisting on masking for all interviews/meetings, and anyone who refuses should be called out.

From the story:

Hicks is said to be frustrated with Trump for taking such a cavalier approach to the virus. She was one of the few West Wing staffers to wear a mask in meetings, which her colleagues chided her for. “She was made fun of because she wore a mask,” a friend said. Sources told me Hicks is also upset that news coverage has made it appear that she gave Trump the virus, when in fact no one knows where he got it. “It’s so unfair she’s sort of being blamed,” the friend told me.

Hi. I’m back from my mini-sabbatical. I have thoughts.

Trump has fucked with the truth for nearly four years, so I can understand the skepticism about his diagnosis. His mendacity has real consequences, and we’re seeing that this morning.

You gotta wonder how many more administration members, family members, staffers, Secret Service personnel, military, law enforcement, media and other peripheral players will end up being infected. And while they’ll try like hell to deny it, responsibility will lie with Trump for playing politics with a pandemic.

Finally - Trump and his wife contracting the virus is pretty much the perfect end point of four years of lying, cheating, undermining the foundations of democracy, and believing they were existing outside the law, societal norms, and natural transmission of infectious disease.

It has all collapsed, as it inevitably had to.

I hope for the best for Joe Biden, his staff and family.

[Panhandle Public Health District Director Kim] Engel broke out those numbers in a graphic shared Thursday. In the Panhandle, cases among children in the 10 to 19 age group more than doubled between July and September. The Panhandle saw 67 cases among children in July, which climbed to 97 cases in August and then jumped to 142 cases in September. Cases in the age demographic of 20-29, which would encompass college-aged students, also dramatically increased between July and September. There were 69 cases reported in July. August and September saw a dramatic increase in cases, up to 118 cases in August and 173 cases in September.

and

Also during September, directed health measures were relaxed, which many people may have interpreted as a sign that they did not need to take health precautions, such as wearing a mask, using hand sanitizer or washing hands and other preventative steps. The Panhandle moved from Phase 3 to Phase 4, which primarily consists of limiting the size of gatherings, rather than enforcing mask requirements and other limits.

“I heard a lot of people say, when we went into Phase 4, “Oh, OK, there’s no restrictions now,” Engel said. “And we try to get the message out there that there are still restrictions, and a lot of them are upon us personally (to take).

Some COVID-19 counties saw cases dramatically increase in August, September. (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

That’s what was said a few moments ago on MSNBC — they are moving forward with the hearings. Let’s see what happens IRL — the world comes after you quickly.

My family was very poor; my father was a wonderful person but a high school dropout (1924 — when he left school in his senior year) and did not find his footing while we were growing up. His one “vice” was being an avid reader and occasionally buying books we could not afford. One book that seared itself in my memory was a collection of Edgar Allen Poe tales, with bizarre and terrifying illustrations gracing the stories. And one that I recall (though last reading it about 60 years ago) was “Masque of the Red Death” — the wealthy fleeing to a castle in the countryside to escape a plague and enjoying themselves there far from the city only to ultimately discover that one of the guests was death — who touched everyone who then perished. Let’s see whether the Washington GOP escape their just fate and continue with their deplorable plans to impose Barrett on our nation.

Eclectic Cyborg  Oct 2, 2020 • 9:36:26am

Yes, this had nothing to do with the fact Trump nor any of his people rarely ever wear a mask or social distance or take this virus seriously. It was all a nefarious plot from the Left who can infect people with Covid at will.

The positive test result for Trump and his wife was the most searched topic in China on the widely used social media app Weibo a few hours after the announcement, with most comments mocking or critical.

One user darkly joked that Trump had finally tweeted something positive.

The Chinese government has bristled at Trump’s attempts to blame China, where the disease emerged, for the pandemic and called for global co-operation in fighting it, a message that has resonated with the public.

Hu Xijin, the outspoken editor of the state-owned Global Times newspaper, tweeted in English that “President Trump and the first lady have paid the price for his gamble to play down the COVID-19.”

However, the Beria-kiddie stuff seems to rhyme with whatever else the Russians come up with to say “This is a really bad guy and we hate him so you should too because _____”

Meanwhile, creeping authoritarianism continues.

WASHINGTON — The National Guard has designated military police units in two states to serve as rapid reaction forces so they can respond quickly to any potential civil unrest around the country, following violent protests that rocked the nation’s capital and several states this summer.

Military leaders don’t explicitly tie the changes to concerns about possible election-related violence, but the nation is bracing for unrest surrounding the tumultuous presidential campaign, particularly if voting results are not known for days or weeks because of the increase in mail-in ballots.

According to the Guard, about 600 troops — 300 in both Alabama and Arizona — will be ready to deploy within 24 hours if requested by a governor in another state. And Guard leaders have also bought more than $200,000 in new protective equipment, and have increased troop training on proper procedures in dealing with protests.

So the coronavirus diagnosis has overwhelmed the news cycle — “suckers and losers”, Trump’s taxes, Trump Senators working on behalf of a Russian agent, Putin bounties on American soldiers, etc — have all gone down the memory hole. Given that coronavirus mishandling should be the biggest news story anyway, so maybe it will remind voters of Trump’s malfeasance — or maybe not. If Trump recovers quickly, it will further his narrative; if not, maybe it will help produce the Democratic landslide that is so merited.

It is confirmed that Beria was a sexual predator, according to evidence given at his trial by his bodyguards. Among other deviant behaviors, during the war he would often be driven slowly around Moscow in his armored car and look for women that he liked; when he identified one he would have his bodyguards take the woman and bring her to his home, where he would have a meal with her and then take her to a specially constructed, soundproof room where he would rape her and engage in acts of sadomasochism. After he was done with them he would have his guard give her flowers, if she accepted he took it as implicit consent to the act and if she refused she would be arrested and probably killed.

This demonstrates that he was much more than a brutal political actor in a brutal time and place, but a disturbed individual who received much sexual pleasure from causing pain and exerting domination over people, particularly women, and this fits with the characterization of him as a deranged individual. To the charge of being a serial killer, the Tunisian Embassy in Moscow is in what was his home and several skeletons of young women were found on the grounds, so it is very likely that he did personally engage in murder for sexual gratification.

There is a list of the women that he raped and/or murdered which was compiled by his bodyguard as part of Stalin’s intent to have him tried and executed prior to Stalin’s death, and the Russian government has said that they will release the full list in 2028; they haven’t released it thus far so as to protect the privacy of surviving victims and their families.

It’s pretty well documented. “The Court of the Red Tsar”—the book Death of Stalin is based on (along with a graphic novel based on the “…Red Tsar” account of Stalin’s final illness and death—gives a lot more detail.

And given the frequency with which spurious charges were snowballed into ritualistic heaping of negative qualities on the guilty, the kinds of things attributed to Beria were still unique.
