Applying the “everything that comes out of Trumpworld is a lie” rule, you get this.

Wasn’t the word earlier that he insisted on going to Walter Reed today because he wanted to do it while he was still able to walk to Marine One?

Good reply to any MAGAts in your life who are now demanding you “pray” for Trump: “Why do I need to pray for him to get better from a hoax that is no worse than the flu? Is he so low energy that he can’t fight off the flu?”

But let me say these are the tamest sexts I’ve ever read in my life. I was expecting some really steamy stuff but this is like “oh my gosh, would i love to kiss you darling”

LMAO

What is wrong with these men? Why do they engage in this inappropriate conduct while running for office? Is it just that they get thrills by trying to avoid detection while they violate rules? Don’t they have any sense? We desperately need every Senate seat we can capture and now Cunningham will lose it for us by being a jerk. At least there are no allegations that the recipient of the text is underage.

well…. if they had kept Hicks illness under wraps, then we would have had more attention thrown at Kimmy G’s sordid past, leading to additional questions about how she fits into the campaign and questions to the Trump boys on if she reminds them of Dad’s current squeeze….

speaking of whom, then having the media use her statements about not giving a fuck about immigrants a nice long healthy chew

then we could have skipped down to the GOP Senate STILL not passing anything that resembles help to the US on the whole to deal with COVID but can spend time infinitum to get their next SCOTUS justice in the pipeline… as in you people can keep on starving, we’re busy tilting the playing field for the future…

so if nothing else, there were still plenty of scandalicious shit to chew on and with this group, who knows what gets uncovered on Monday.

The one person on board who certainly noticed something had gone horribly wrong was the ship’s designer, Thomas Andrews.

IIRC, the ship started to develop an almost imperceptible starboard list within minutes of the impact with the iceberg. Based on an inspection of the damage, it didn’t take long for Andrews to conclude with “mathematical certainty” that the Titanic was doomed. He even estimated it would take a little over two and a half hours for the ship to sink completely.

But then again, Andrews was an expert - the average passenger knew nothing about ship design. And from what I’ve read, once Andrews told Captain Smith the ship was going down and nothing could prevent it, Captain Smith went into something of a state of shock….because he realized there simply weren’t enough lifeboats for all on board and a horrific maritime disaster was now staring him right in the face.

Obviously not spreading the virus she got months ago. But folks can be infected repeatedly with COVID, so if she was exposed to it again (a strong possibility with this administration of morons), she could well have been a super spreader without realizing it at an event…

Well, there were several dozen maskless people all hugging and shaking hands, not only in the Rose Garden, but also packed into a series of meetings and receptions. You don’t need to imagine somebody got RE-infected - which is a REALLY low probability. It could have been any of the guests. They got the ‘instant test’ - the low accuracy one - and then were told they didn’t need masks.

This was going to happen SOMETIME, as cavalier as the WH has been about the whole thing. Clearly, even the stories about testing Trump multiple times a day and being really cautious were bullshit, or more likely, they just got lazy and careless.

The real crime is flying to Bedminster to grip-and-grin, KNOWING one of the people closest to him was symptomatic so she could have been spreading it for several days.

Of course, the stories are now coming out that Trump himself seemed a bit ‘off’ on Wednesday, too, so more likely they got it at the same time.

But Hicks didn’t go to the ACB celebration, as I understand it.

Speaking of remdesivir:

The EU’s medicines regulator has said it is investigating reports of possible “acute” kidney damage in patients taking the coronavirus drug remdesivir, made by US pharma giant Gilead.

“EMA’s safety committee has started a review […] to assess reports of acute kidney injury in some patients with Covid-19 taking Veklury (remdesivir),” it said in a statement.

The regulator said it had “not been determined whether there is a causal relationship” between remdesivir and kidney problems, but that the issue “warrants further investigation”.

Covid-19 itself could also cause kidney injuries, the regulator noted, according to AFP.

Someone on the previous thread was concerned that Trump was being treated by a Doctor of Osteopathy. Here in Arizona, two of our five medical schools (A.T. Still and Midwestern University) grant D.O. degrees and these are just as legit as MD degrees. The gastroenterologist I see has D.O. and he works in a practice with doctors with MDs. (The other schools are UA Tucson, UA Phoenix and a branch of the Mayo Clinic set to graduate its first class in 2021. ASU is in the planning stages of a medical school.)

The tl;dr is that a Doctor of Osteopathy, at least in Arizona, is a legit medical degree.

A lurid Tom Clancy type thriller could start off with a foreign adversary detonating a stealthy biological weapon on the White House grounds, with the aim of decapitating the executive branch. But I’m sure he would have had the dirty deed done by a foreign agent sneaking past security etc.

Who could imagine that this foreign agent is the president himself? Who is too stupid to realize he is being used by Putin to achieve this end — as the intersection of willful Trumpish/Republican stupidity and a relentless virus comes to this inevitable conclusion.

My paediatrician was a D.O. The last time I saw him was when I returned from Spain and came down with pneumonia in Michigan in the middle of the winter. Although he was then part of a health maintenance organisation, he agreed to see me mostly because I had no physician in Michigan.

Osteopaths in the United States are trained to medical doctor standards with what is described as additional pseudo-scientific training.

I suspect that since DOs have to pass the same boards as MDs, they probably pay less attention to the psedoscientific quackery. I can say that the treatment I’ve had for GERD and the colonoscopies (2) and endoscopies (3) I’ve endured have been very professional and not even a whisper of quackery involved.

Lordy, I think I’mma overdose on schadenfreude here.

As a relatively decent human being, yeah, it sucks that these people are getting sick, because if there’s one universal among humans, it’s that no one likes being sick, even with trivial illnesses like the common cold, to say nothing of more serious diseases and every person on the planet who’s ever lived can certainly relate to that.

But, as Forrest Gump said, “Stupid is as stupid does” and in this particular instance, well…..they reap what they sow.

Chamber poll shows Joe Biden winning Florida by 5 points (Florida Chamber of Commerce poll)

It turns out killing your constituents isn’t a good strategy for being elected.

Joe Biden holds a solid lead among likely Florida voters, according to the latest poll from the Florida Chamber of Commerce.

A survey by Cherry Communications for the Chamber shows if the election were held today, former Vice President Biden would beat President Donald Trump by 5 percentage points in Florida.

The Chamber was guarded about the details, not even releasing the level of support for each candidate or the number of undecided voters still in play.

I discovered early in the evening that as much as I would prefer not to be stuffing myself full of analgesics (1 500 mg Tylenol and 2 200 mg Advil every six hours per the dentist’s instructions, in addition to the nasty antibiotic), failure to do just that means the right side of my face starts hurting. On top of that, my right ear is stuffed up. I can’t tell if this has to do with the infection in the tooth or if something else is going on. I’m not *miserable* but it did impede my enjoyment of very loud Friday music.

Honestly… there’s no realistic scenario right now where Trump wins, and there hasn’t been for a few weeks. Even cheating and stealing the election is far fetched (but not impossible) right now, assuming he even make it to November with what’s going on now.

Personally, I’ve been of the opinion since at least the convention (if not earlier) that the race was pretty much lost to Trump and the question now is just how badly he gets his ass kicked at the polls. Trump needs too much to go right for himself and too much to go wrong for Biden at this point to have a hope of winning.

If there was no chance of ratfuckery and cheating/stealing the election I wouldn’t have been worried at all since it became obvious that his handling of COVID was a clusterfuck. I think it’s been legitimately lost to him for several months. I was very much worried about shenanigans though, but even now that’s looking less like it will happen, and even less like it would work, even if I ignore the non-zero chance of Trump dying of COVID in the next few weeks.

Worst thing I could see possibly happening is the dirtbag left and BernieBros seeing Trump incapable of winning and they start writing in Bernie or voting for Howie. Hell I know at least 4 people myself I suspect might just do that the second they think Trump can’t win.

The growing body of evidence is that even persons who are asymptomatic or suffer mild symptoms still end up with evidence of organ damage that will take months or years to repair itself depending upon the age and relative health of the subject. Likewise, 1/3 to 1/2 of patients who end up on ventilators ultimately die due to complications. So the idea that he’s gonna walk out on the stage in two weeks, hale and hearty, ready to get back to campaigning is laughable.

More likely scenario? If he survives, it will be after CV-19 has beat his ass like he owes it money. The fact that they carted his ass off to Walter Reed within 48 hours of the first symptoms tells me that we’re not going to see him strutting out onto the stage on Election Night to bellow that he will not be conceding the race.

This morning, I had one of those shower thoughts….imagine the docs over at Walter Reed have to put Trump in a medically-induced coma. Of course, the 25th kicks in at that point, and Pence assumes the office of the Presidency for the duration, however long that lasts.

Biden handily defeats caretaker POTUS Pence in the election - and then Donnie is taken out of the medically-induced coma, let’s say, mid-December. Only to find out he (and Pence) got whipped like a red-headed stepchild.

This is a perfect opportunity for Trump to avoid a humiliating defeat, drop out of the campaign and let the RNC replace him with a Pence/Haley ticket. That way, if Trump survives, he will forever be able to claim that if not for the infection, he would’ve won, and Pence is to blame for losing.

he went straight to unproven experimental drugs awfully quickly

and since there’s no way to know whether it actually did anything or not, the ‘i rode it out, it was nothing” argument is gone too

Happy Banned Book Week!

American Library Association spotlights banned books (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

What do the books “Fifty Shades of Grey” and the Bible have in common? They both made American Library Association’s top 10 most challenged books and the top 100 most challenged books in the last decade.

ALA published its list of top 100 most challenged books of the decade earlier this week in honor of Banned Books Week, which is a an annual observance spotlighting censorship and informing the public about their intellectual freedom, according to Deborah Caldwell Stone, director of the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom.

The Lied Scottsbluff Public Library has a display at the front of the building where you can check out books from the banned books list. The Goshen County [Wyo.] Library has been posting on social media ALA’s list of banned, or challenged, books and even providing recommendations for what banned books people should read.

“We’re giving people a broader picture of literature,” Goshen County library director Christine Braddy said. “Sometimes people stick within their own preferred genre, but reading broadly and outside that is one of the ways to develop empathy. Books are great way for doing that, and banned books are even better because they can go further outside your lived experience.”

Gering librarian Sherry Preston said that while the United States government does not ban books any more, there are still plenty of books that are challenged, typically within school systems. She said it’s often because the books have content that makes parents feel uncomfortable.

Another conservative genocidaire.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Says Closing Schools In Spring A Mistake (CBS Miami)

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday that closing school campuses in the spring as the coronavirus pandemic took hold might have been one of the nation’s biggest “public health mistakes.”

And, while appearing on the Drew Steele radio show, DeSantis equated people fighting the return of students to classrooms as the “flat earthers of our day.”

It’s projection with these asshats always.

“And I think even Europe has said we shouldn’t have closed up.” In the interview with the conservative talk-show host, DeSantis said that as the virus surged in Florida in July, he fought against people who didn’t want to reopen schools because he expected the outbreak to abate and because children “are not vectors” for spreading the coronavirus.

“Europe” said no such thing. You’re a liar.

The fact is that there STILL isn’t enough PPE in some parts of the country, that our first responders are not always being fairly compensated for their risk and time and are getting sick and dying (and suffering from anxiety and depression, making them more susceptible to suicide) , and there seems to be NO move to repair that. This is a right wing conservative problem. No one else’s. I hope one of Joe’s first moves is to remedy these key things. Hospitals are overwhelmed and if we keep losing healthcare professionals, who will replace them?

The fact that the Republicans have been petty throughout this, excluding Democrats from meetings and such, turns out to be a good thing for the Democrats.

If Pence goes hors de combat, it could get more nuts. I remember reading that Barr has argued that the Presidential Succession Act is unconstitutional, since it specifies members of Congress in the succession but the Constitution specifies that an “Officer” shall act as President. And he is going to do everything he can to make sure Pelosi doesn’t succeed Pence.

So, Barr would immediately argue that Pompeo should be installed. I can imagine Pelosi being sworn in, because that’s the law, and then some hack swearing in Pompeo as well because Barr says Pompeo’s President. Now we have duelling Presidents. Following the law would mean following Pelosi’s orders until ordered otherwise by the courts, but who knows what the DHS or other highly Trumpy organizations would do.

I assume that the Dems have gamed this out, but I would wonder what kind of talks Pelosi has been having with Roberts.

A hacker who locked computer servers in Las Vegas’ Clark County School District with ransomware released documents with Social Security numbers, grades, and other stolen private data after officials refused to pay the ransom. The district is the largest known to be hit by hackers during the Covid-19 crisis, and marks an escalation in tactics for hackers who exploit schools heavily dependent on online learning and technology. Some school districts have made online learning their sole educational option during the pandemic; experts said this compounds the impact of ransomware and attackers’ demands. Threat analyst Brett Callow at cybersecurity company Emsisoft said, “A big difference between this school year and last school year is they didn’t steal data, and this year they do.”

A U.S. House of Representatives panel warned that the Pentagon is still using weapons systems rendered irrelevant by technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, space, and biotechnology. The Future of Defense Task Force is focusing on the next three to five decades, and concluded that the U.S. Department of Defense and Congress should be “focused on the needs of the future and not on the political and military-industrial loyalties of the past.” They recommended the U.S. follow an AI initiative modeled after the Manhattan Project, and overcome cultural resistance to the implementation of new technologies. The panel urged every major military acquisition program to assess at least one AI or autonomous alternative before funding, and for the nation to spearhead development and ratification of a Geneva Convention-like global AI pact.

Along with the rest of those propaganda cretins there should be no surprise there are millions of people who would not care or actually partake in giving the rest of us prison, the wall, or helicopter rides. But I don’t want the same for them. I’m not them, though I utterly detest them.

They should be removed from power and ostracized. Shamed into the closet. If they break laws, imprisoned. But there will be no reckoning until we understand that we lost a generation to paranoia and hate then develop a plan to resolve and carry it through. This is an autonomy issue, not AI. There is very limited autonomy in weapon systems (consider close-in anti-missile defense for ships), but it is not clear how far this should go and under what conditions, so it is an active issue for research and policy development.

AI can be used as decision support, and generally will, but not make command decisions. Where the human is in the loop is another active issue.

It’s looking more and more that President Trump was the superspreader in both the Rose Garden Supreme Court Justice announcement — most of the other confirmed cases from that event were front-row in the audience, facing him as he stood and spoke at the podium — and the debate prep session where several of the participants, including now Gov. Christie have subsequently had confirmed positive tests.

If this is true then it looks like he was infected but asymptomatic during the earlier SJ selection announcement so it’s possible it’s actually been more than a week since he was himself infected, not just a couple of days.

It’s possible, perhaps, to determine the route of the infection by testing the genetics of the various viruses being expressed by the President and those with positive results around him. I don’t know if this is being done though.

I think we’re a long way past the time when missile defense systems can be operated without AI, and realistically someone is going to put together airborne defense systems that rely on AI in the next decade.

The danger is not the AI “waking up”, the problem is that complex systems making complex decisions in complex environments can be unpredictable. Friendly fire, and bystander kills.

It’s looking more and more that President Trump was the superspreader in both the Rose Garden Supreme Court Justice announcement

I doubt that.

It seems that everyone caught it at the announcement, and people who are going to have symptoms all began showing symptoms on or after Wednesday.

If Trump had it earlier, it seems quite unlikely that he would be asymptomatic from Saturday to Tuesday, but have had enough viral load in him on Saturday to spread it to the others.

My theory is either Amy Barrett was still contagious, or some of her kids were, but have been completely asymptomatic.

And for Trump to need to go to hospital less than 2 days after his first symptoms is a really bad sign.

Fun fact: There was a novel released a few years after that episode that was a kind of sequel to it. In the book, the Romulans ultimately find out that Sisko and Garak rigged that whole thing (and killed a prominent Romulan senator and his entourage as a result) and get REALLY pissed about it to the point of almost going to war with the Federation.

Trump’s team showed up late for the debate because they knew he had it. Was Trump yelling at Biden for 90 minutes because he was purposefully trying to give Joe coronavirus?

This is definitely something that needs to be investigated; that is an absolutely chilling possibility. Didn’t someone here say that because of their late arrival, they were not tested at the venue and instead the venue relied on their reporting of their status?

Trump yelling is so on brand for him that he wouldn’t need a virus to engage in such behavior.

I’m not sure what that has to do with DT, covid-19 and Twitter, but I agree about In the Pale Moonlight (which, as was my practice, I saw four times the season it came out — the two times my UPN station broadcast it in the first run, and twice again in summer reruns). I really dislike the dunking being done as though we know Barrett is the source of all the infection. The long-after-infection spreader thing in particular is not supported by any documented cases I’m aware of.

Now, the event where she was nominated was almost certainly where a lot of this got around, but it could have been anyone - even SS (who have had an ongoing bad time with C19) or event staff.

That’s why I worry about Joe and Jill!

I was late getting to the notice of Bob Gibson’s death from pancreatic cancer (DAMMIT!), but wanted to share this from St Louis Today:

But, he had leapt to the national forefront in 1964 when he worked five times, 40 innings’ worth, in a 14-day span, four of them starts, as he helped the Cardinals win the National League pennant by one game and then starred as the Cardinals beat the New York Yankees four games to three in the World Series, the Cardinals’ first Series crown since 1946.

Gibson pitched 27 innings in three Series games. One of the starts went eight innings but his second went 10 as he won Game Five, 5-2. Then he came back on two days’ rest and worked a complete-game 7-5 win in Game Seven.

“That last game … I was tired,” admitted Gibson.

The Cardinals held a 7-3 lead into the top of the ninth and manager Johnny Keane had lefthander Ray Sadecki warming up in the bullpen.

“In the ninth inning, I wasn’t pitching, I was throwing,” Gibson had said. “Before the inning started, Keane said, ‘I don’t want you to try to be fancy. Just throw it over the middle of the plate. I don’t believe they’re going to hit four home runs.’

“They hit two, by Clete Boyer and Phil Linz. And Phil Linz couldn’t hit home runs. Clete knocked the crap out of it and then they did it again.

“I had good stuff. I didn’t just lay it in there, but I looked in the dugout and Johnny wasn’t anywhere to be found,” Gibson said.

At this point, Gibson said he thought he would try a different approach.

“I thought maybe I should start pitching instead of just throwing,” said Gibson, who got Bobby Richardson to pop to second baseman Dal Maxvill for the final out.

I suggest a plausible explanation for why Hicks’ infection was “leaked” that is entirely in-line with what we know about this admin. Namely that Trump tested positive early in the week, possibly as early as Monday, and the staffers gambled that he would remain asymptomatic for the duration of the infection. But once he started developing a fever and cough, they knew the jig was up. If he just suddenly canceled all his public appearances for 2 weeks and went into isolation, it would be impossible to come up with a plausible explanation and eventually his condition would leak.

So they picked Hicks, who has been receiving negative responses for her insistence upon wearing masks and maintaining distancing, as the scapegoat for his condition. The hope (pun not intended) was that they could spin it as “He was around her recently, she just tested positive, they tested him out of ‘an abundance of caution,’ hence she infected him.” What they didn’t really count on was people turning up infected who were nowhere near her in recent days but were around him.

Hence why we now have a trainwreck of a timeline: They don’t know which lie to go with.

The nakedness of voter suppression in Texas can’t be ignored.

The obvious reason is obvious: Abbott doesn’t want the densely populated areas, which are Democratic areas, to have enough drop off spots for absentee ballots in order to discourage people dropping off ballots. Also the poorest areas near the border where there are fewer cars per people means those without vehicles can’t get to the single spots in their county. Same for the older and poorer folk in Houston and Dallas.

Thanks — I actually found it too. (Since it’s a throwaway line in a short story I’d forgotten, I forgive myself for forgetting it.)

(Actually, the sequel, if there is a sequel, of ItPM is Hollow Men. If anyone cares…)

re: #451 BeachDem

And Franklin Graham sat right next to the Notre Dame covid-y guy in the Rose Garden, and was standing close to Kellyanne and Barr when they were chatting.

*blast* I knew about the super spreader event at the Mall on Saturday, because one of my bête noires (Sean Feucht, an anti-masker spreading this bullshit up and down the West Coast) was there. I knew it was a Graham event, but I didn’t realize he was going to be in the thick of it. I bet other people in the Rose Garden were also at the event.

Idiots, every single one of them.

ETA: The Friendly Atheist is reporting:

Over the past two weeks, in Shasta County, California, there have been nearly 100 COVID cases among people in their 20s. But that seems rather unusual since the two major colleges in the area, Shasta College and Simpson University, have reported only eight cases total.

Where are the rest of the cases coming from?

Well, it turns out Shasta County is also home to Bethel Church, which is home to the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, which is also known as “Christian Hogwarts,” and which is the home base for COVID-denying preacher/singer Sean Feucht.

That school won’t reveal how many cases of COVID there are among its students… but it’s not nothing.

friendlyatheist.patheos.com

I am SURE some of the Bethel students went to DC for Sean’s thing. Idiots, every single one of them.

Yeah, the episode itself is pretty controversial in fan circles, particularly if you’re one of those folks who hold strictly to the “Gene would never approve of it!” philosophy that says Roddenberry’s idealized future where humans are paragons of all that is good and right is law. The idea that a Starfleet officer would not only condone, but actively participate in an assassination and cover-up, would probably have caused Gene to dissolve into a screaming fit.

So imagine the novel that acts as a sequel to the episode, where Starfleet does find out…but they won’t punish Sisko publicly because doing so would not just mean making his acts public, but could give the Dominion the leverage they need to turn the Romulans against the Federation. If Gene wasn’t already dead, such a novel being written in “his” universe might have done the job.

Like I’ve said before, we’ll know the truth when some hapless White House staffer informs the world that President Trump has shuffled off this mortal coil - despite that tweet from “Trump” 15 minutes earlier saying he was feeling great.

How ignorant do you have to be to think that a person my age (71) would have personal memories of World War II?

In fact, the person who asked me about those “memories” (and knew how old I was) also thought we could have won the Vietnam war by deploying all of the Iowa class battleships there, since “the whole country is within range of their 16 inch guns” (which is 23 miles.) Er, no.

There is an explanation though: This person is a Ron Paul lepertarian.

The only “crisis” I see Dems grappling with right now is the uncertainty over who is in charge and what the line of succession is if Donny croaks. It’s Repubs who are flipping the fuck out because it’s becoming clearer by the hour that their plans for the next month have been sidelined by Dear Leader’s sudden exit from the battlefield which seems to be dragging just enough of them with him to put any votes they wished to hold in doubt.

I always liked it. Then, I also considered Gene’s take to be the ideal - kind of like how Americans at their best try to live up to a set of ideals, his were the ones they tried to live up to. Sometimes they succeeded, other times, like ITPM, not so much.

Seems to me this other famous scene from DS9 shows how others may have seen Gene’s Universe…

Never too soon for this. I am going to gloat and celebrate about these evil fuckers falling victim to their own murderous policies. They have killed over 200,000 people, caused millions to suffer a horrible disease, wrecked the economy, empowered masses of vicious right-wing terrorists; and they have done all this for the benefit of a foreign power. They deserve Covid.
