Yeah he seems to be bleeding out support. I really think of the five states left: He’s up in Pennsylvania and North Carolina as well but trailing in Arizona and Nevada that NC will be the only he holds on to but it’s possible that NC could go to Biden in a squeaker.

Let me just say that Trump has lost and he knows it. This isn’t 2000, where Bush had the presumption of having won. This is Trump throwing shit against the wall but like the wall on the border, he never built it and it’s a mirage.

The Democrats may not have captured the Senate, but we’ve removed the stain of Donald Trump, and the prosecutions will drop on Jan 20th at 12:00pm.

Show no mercy to Republicans

Start—Indict Perdue for insider trading and if Loeffler gets back in indict her too. Indict Ron Johnson for colluding with Russian agents. Indict Rudy for election tampering. Indict every fucking Republican judge that allowed voter suppression. Indict Nunes as well. Investigate McConnell’s finances and indict him.

Indict Kavanaugh on charged of tax fraud. Indict Thomas on bribery charges.

The Republicans are not mad at Trump. He did them a favor. He’s wildly expanded their base. Trump has kept the Senate in the hands of the Republicans.

Republicans are being rewarded for Trump’s hateful malfeasance.

Repeat: The Republicans wildest dreams - of locking the Dems out of the Senate and thus opening the door for a right-wing supreme court to wreck havoc on modernity - has happened.

This election was more terrible than some are willing to accept.

Fine, look for the silver lining in a Biden win. But Biden is starting off as the equivalent of a lame duck.

Local election results: The incumbent Republican mayor of Scottsbluff has been ousted. He came in third; the top two candidates are both Democrats. The race was for two city council seats.

On the six-seat Scottsbluff school board, another Democrat has been elected, ousting a Republican. The board is now 3-3. Of note, in the yard sign war in Scottsbluff, area printers noted school board signs were the most ordered signs.

For my school board in Dalton, six candidates ran for three seat; another Democrat was elected, expanding control of the board to five.

For my village board, the count is not yet in.

County ballot proposition to replace the position of elected County Surveyor with an appointed one overwhelmingly passed.

Powerful words from Eddie Glaude from last year, but I think it goes a long way to explaining why Trump was elected in the first place, and why, in the face of his incompetence with Covid that has killed more than 200,000 people, along with too examples of his general awfulness that are too numerous to mention, he and his political party ended up doing as well as they’ve done in this election when they should have been blown out 1980 style.

Let’s start with what Biden can do: he can solve the COVID crisis. That, he can do without Republican help and despite their efforts to stop him. There’s a TON of funding he can tap into to start helping the country actually try and slow the pandemic. Second, and this is not to be minimized, he can unleash the hounds of the law on the Trump criminal enterprise. Make no mistake, this is important. We need to see a reckoning, and I believe we will. Finally, he can set up Kamala Harris to run and win in 2024 (hopefully with a Democratic Senate). But although this was a huge blow, it was vitally important to remove Trump. And we did it. We did it.

The big problem with our messaging is that it involves helping blacks, women, and other groups the GOP hates. Georgia leaning towards Biden means that message isn’t having as big a problem as here in Texas.

Require Senate?

No. It was done by executive order.

When Obama’s team negotiated for the accords, the US team specifically asked for a three-year delay if a future president wished to withdraw from the agreement, based on the failure of the Kyoto Protocols.

However, there is a penalty for rejoining, in that we cannot participate in the next round of negotiations regarding climate targets, scheduled for December 12.

Dear Cubans in Miami,

The guy you voted for is the one acting just like Fidel Castro.

I think Trump is more like the type of Cuban president/dictator who ruled Cuba prior to Castro. He represents (in their mind) the strong leader (at least until he is disposed).

Unfortunately in Cuba, it led to corrupt figures like Gerardo Machado prior to Fulgencio Batista, then Carlos Prío Socarrás. then Bastista again.

FWIW in the 1930s, Bastista worked for a period of time for my grandfather in Havana as a car salesman until he quit and rejoined the Cuban military. Then Bastista fomented the coup against Machado to become de facto leader of Cuba’s military, and then president for his first term.

re: #82 Jack Burton

i actually don’t blame the DCCC for the money spent… the polling showed the races as being competitive, to ignore that would be to not make the GOP fight for what was perceived to be a winnable seat. Hindsight is good and all, but why are we pissing about SC and KY? We also lost Iowa and Me, which also appeared to be gettable, we could have thrown more money at Montana and Alaska or even Mississippi… choices were made based on the information that was at hand.

If the information at hand sucked, then you have to figure out why… why would act blue designate support to races if the polling didn’t show it as worth the effort? It strikes me that if the DCCC wants to, then they should eschew public polling (if its this misleading) and develop their own more rigorous methodology to determine what is getable and what isn’t.

Also, the messaging has to be adjusted, I believe it was Bitcofer’s thread earlier that re-informed us, that these people are fucking stupid, low effort, low engagement voters who have their societal identity tied up with the GOP. You have to find a crack in that bubble, exploit it and break them into the real world, to have them understand that No, Donald Trump did not support a mask mandate and here are the fucking words out of his own mouth, with a date and time as to when he said it. If your source is Fox News or ONN, even better, these folks BELIEVE those sources.

Out on Facebook, I’m sure you can STILL find trogdolytes that never believed that Grabbing women by the pussy because your famous and can get away with it is nothing more than locker room talk… yet you need to bring them home, can you say that to YOUR wife? If Donald Trump grabbed your wife’s tits and ass because he wanted to, is THAT really how you think things should be?

I have no idea if any of this makes sense, but I think if there’s a lesson learned, its that DCC doesn’t rely on public or media entities that apparently suck at their job and do a better job of understanding what their message needs to be for the audience that its intended for.

Didn’t help Amy McGrath or Jamie Harrison or Mary Hegar.

Hundreds of millions flushed down the toilet. There needs to be more done here than just throwing money at election followed by a surprised pikachu face when they lose by 20 points.

Alternative view: You can’t win if you don’t run.

Texas statewide races are always going to be expensive. Beto O’Rourke started when he went after Ted Cruz, paving the way to rebuild the Democratic Party.

That made it possible for MJ Hager to mount her challenge. She lost. That happens in elections. There will be more elections, and Texas seems to be trending blue (by the way, how did the Texas House come out in this?)

Wendy Davis came within 7 points of Chip Roy, a seat the Republicans held for forty years.

Ousting entrenched Republicans is going to be expensive. The alternative is not to try.

In Mitch McConnell’s race, because he is the majority leader, every person in the country is affected by his decisions.

Jamie Harrison has done the same thing for South Carolina as O’Rourke did for Texas.

This will be a long slog.

The end of the hate-tweets from the White House - yes.

Putting competent people in positions to serve the American public - yes.

Neither of which, though, will be remembered by the next election, which are the midterms in two years.

So what then? Should we just sit in the corner and suck our thumbs?

Yeah, that thing about never winning the elections you don’t contest is kinda relevant; softening up Texas is not a bad thing.

That’s something to think about if you’re talking longer term strategies. Another thing to think about is your battleground. Georgia is no longer a gimme for Republicans. It’s rapidly turning purple, with Hollywood and other liberal leaning industries moving the Atlanta.

That means it makes TOTAL sense to throw money at contests there. The presidential race, no matter how it turns out, means there’s something there to harvest.

re: #40 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

The stain of Trump will be with us for a long time.

In some ways this is true, and I have always enjoyed your analysis.

But it’s also better than some are willing to accept. Republicans have been endlessly rewarded for bad faith and bad behaviour, because that is how America is designed - to protect one class of people, and modern Republicans have chosen to embrace this philosophy more or less openly. America will continue to reward bad faith from its protected caste because that is what it is. It is the way it is meant to be.

It is also awful that millions upon millions refuse to share reality. That our neighbours continue to double down on bigotry and hate because they have caught a disease. The ability of modern media to control the minds of people and alter their reality is staggering and appalling.

On the other hand, a cultish leader, backed by the most powerful mind-control apparatus in human history, and enjoying a systemic advantage designed to protect minority rule above the lives of its citizens, still lost power. Millions doubled down on him, but millions more did not. A generation of leaders is forming who have only ever seen Republicans as the cartoonish evildoers they are. I still don’t trust my neighbours, and I still talked to a fucking doctor today who insisted Covid is a hoax, but America did everything it could to keep its mad king in power - cheating, voter suppression, media manipulation - and some American people still denied America itself.

America is still doomed if it cannot change its fundamentals. It still has no answer to right wing media. Minorities will not save it. Its systems and norms will not save it. It made the worst human on earth its king, and tried to keep him there, but for now, it has failed. That, if nothing else, is reason to smile.

And maybe soon that day will come when I never have to think about Donald fucking Trump again.

The treatment is to remove their source and deprogram. Rachel Bitecofer’s idea of engaging with them in a similarly lowbrow fashion will not work, though by and large I think her analysis is good. These people do not have agency. They are unable to help themselves, even if Republicans maim them personally. They can only do what they are told.

Trump told them to vote day of (probably because he hoped to find a way to remove all early votes) and Democrats voted early and especially heavily by mail because we’re worried about COVID.

Originally, Spock was supposed to have been the result of some sophisticated lab work — not a “natural” conception.

Also, there was some much later backstory about several major humanoid species being originally descended from “seedings” of a vanished elder race — but I agree. That’s one of the places where I needed an extra set of pulleys to suspend my disbelief.

I think nothing is scheduled from NV until noon (eastern) tomorrow.

that was the original line but then they said something about how due to the “level of interest” they would announce something sooner. But maybe they were just fooling with us and won’t come out till tomorrow as they originally planned anyway.

re: #247 Jack Burton

Gene Roddenberry was more progressive than many, but still had his “issues”.

Meanwhile Star Trek: Lower Decks has the first Black Woman Captain that’s a regular and not a rando-1off-guest. Even though it’s an animated comedy, it’s still great and I love her.

I’m also very fond of that show — much more than I thought I’d be. And TWO WOC are the principal characters, which is nice.

I enjoy Discovery, which I know some people hate, but it does have a black female lead.

I have issues with Discovery that have become less a problem as it’s gone on. Since they jumped 1000 years into the future and have no “stepping all over canon” problems to deal with I think it’s going to be even better.

That said none of my issues with Discovery were: “Oh no women!”, “Oh no brown people!”, “Oh no gays!”, or “Oh no they said ‘Fuck’!”

More like “Oh no you completely changed the Klingons for no reason” and “oh no there’s some serious plot holes here”… those kind of issues.

re: #242 A hollow voice says, Beware the strongman con

I expect you know this, but what it boils down to is they don’t want all those girls in it. (Roddenberry cast three women in TNG — and six men — and was going to drop Marina Sirtis because too many women.)

*Denise Crosby left the show, so the Counselor stayed.
**Also, too many faces aren’t white, but that’s harder to calculate.

Well, to be (somewhat) fair, Crosby left for two understandable reasons: She feared being type-casted and she felt that the character wasn’t going anywhere because the writers didn’t know what do with her. Hell, Sir Patrick has admitted on more than one occasion that he spent the first 3 seasons expecting at any moment to be back on his way to Britain to resume theater work due to the series’ cancellation.

I just wish it would have remembered it when 9/11 fucked my judgement up for about 5-7 years.

If it makes you feel better look at how much Wolf 359 f**ked up Picard for a bit (most obviously directly after it, but he’d carry that scar with him all the way to First Contact… he went through on a personal level much like what we as a country did on a national level.

I’m glad they let the Klingons grow their hair back. And I wish they’d lose the profanity — not that I’m offended, but really colloquial language ages really fast. If you want to create something for the ages, it’s best to be a bit conservative in your language (what JMS called speaking like earls and didn’t approve. But I think he was wrong.)

AZ is… a little up in the air. Going to be surprised if the result goes Trump but the first batch of data in the remaining batch looks like it’ll be a squeaker.

NV probably should prove out, but again we need to see what’s in the remaining ballots.

Alaska is… kinda wild. I don’t expect it but there’s no data to argue anything.

I think NC has gotten away. Something amazing will have to come out of late mail to change it from Trump.

GA looks like it should probably be Biden as apparent winner tomorrow morning.

I’m genuinely surprised that no one has called PA yet. It’s a little bit of a black box, but at this point it’s just a countdown with no drama.

DS9 is my favorite series after TNG, mostly for the big reason that there’s visible continuity and character growth as the series progresses. They didn’t really go full serialization until the last two seasons, but even early on there was a very real effort to make actions have consequences greater than throw-away lines or small callbacks to past episodes.
