LYRICS:
Some people will tell you
Whatever you want
Whatever you want
You got em well trained now

People will tell you
Whatever you want
Whatever you want
They dare not complain

Every night and every day
Some will fall upon their swords
In order that
They might serve the greater good
But don’t believe a word of it

People will tell you
Whatever you want
Whatever you want
You got em well trained now
Some people will tell you
Whatever you want
Whatever you want
They dare not complain
As crazy as a king
As bent as a snake
There are some things they will never ever say
And people will tell you whatever you want
Whatever you want
To keep you in your place

Hear the lying every day
I see the same expressions on them
How they long to speak their mind
But something always stops them dead
Should be shouting from the mountain
At their top of their voice
This is not right, this man is a fake
But they will follow him down to the edge of the cliff
And if he tells them to jump,
They will jump right in

Some people will tell you
Whatever you want
Whatever you want
You got em well trained now
Whatever you want

You raise your hand
And they respond
And they will tell you
Whatever you want

Republicans are lying again and here is the proof. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the GOP cult’s membership is up in arms over the alleged inclusion of foreign aid grants, among other “pork,” in the new Corona Virus bill.
This link is the entire 5000+ page text of the “Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021” of which the Corona Virus relief bill is a part.
Specifically, the Corona relief acts are DIVISION M—CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE AND RELIEF SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATIONS ACT, and Division N, 2021 DIVISION N—ADDITIONAL CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE AND RELIEF. This starts on page 1815.
The Foreign Aid appropriations are under DIVISION K—DEPARTMENT OF STATE, FOREIGN OPERATIONS, AND RELATED PROGRAMS APPROPRIATIONS ACT. This starts on page 1252. There is no mention of Pakistan, Somalia, Nepal, etc. in sections M and N. These sections ARE the Corona Relief Act. This is searchable.
Challenge your Republican friends, if any, to find foreign aid in Divisions M or N.

The mainstream press will not be happy until they have their fascist government in place to make their jobs easy.

More fascism = less hard work to do. Just take marching orders from the predominate opinion ordered by top-down edict and go with that and cash your paycheck. easy peasy.

Mainstream press is about the money. The worldwide trend is towards the easiest avenues towards riches and fascism is the zeitgeist of today,

Historically newspapers have supported authoritarian attempts at taking power, because if you are on the wrong side of that (opposing authoritarianism), your newspaper will be seized and your staff, you, and your family will be arrested.

On the flip side, if you support authoritarianism and democratic governance defeats authoritarians, you will not be arrested.

The New York Times has yet to retract their endorsement of Adolph Hitler.

FBI agents investigating if 5G paranoia was behind Nashville bombing

News4 Investigates has confirmed FBI agents spent Saturday speaking with a top Nashville real estate agent, who contacted them after fearing the subcontractor who worked for him may be the same man whose home they were searching.

Other federal agents spent much of the day searching the Antioch home of Anthony Warner.

Realtor Steve Fridrich contacted the FBI after reading Warner’s name, as for several years, a man by the name of Tony Warner had worked for him for several years doing information technology work.

Fridrich confirms that agents asked him whether or not Warner had paranoia about 5G technology.
Fridrich told the agents that Warner had never spoken to him about that.

But a source close to the federal investigation said that among several different tips and angles, agents are investigating whether or not Warner had paranoia that 5G technology was being used to spy on Americans.

A spokeswoman for the FBI said they could not comment because of the pending investigation.

So, if Trump is sent to state prison, where would he likely end up? And how would Secret Service protection work? Should he even be allowed to receive any perks of post presidency, like his predecessors?

In the (still unknown) event he is convicted of a crime which could draw incarceration, I imagine he would be confined to his home rather than a jail. That would be much easier on the Secret Service than a jail.

This is pretty interesting, Morale and Motivations: Slavery and white supremacism in the wikipedia article on the Confederate Army.

[O]nly 20 percent of the sample of 429 Southern soldiers explicitly voiced proslavery convictions in their letters or diaries. As one might expect, a much higher percentage of soldiers from slaveholding families than from nonslaveholding families expressed such a purpose: 33 percent, compared with 12 percent. Ironically, the proportion of Union soldiers who wrote about the slavery question was greater, as the next chapter will show. There is a ready explanation for this apparent paradox. Emancipation was a salient issue for Union soldiers because it was controversial. Slavery was less salient for most Confederate soldiers because it was not controversial. They took slavery for granted as one of the Southern ‘rights’ and institutions for which they fought, and did not feel compelled to discuss it.

— James M. McPherson, For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War (1997), pp. 109-110, emphasis added.

Continuing, McPherson also stated that of the hundreds of Confederate soldiers’ letters he had examined, none of them contained any anti-slavery sentiment whatsoever:

Although only 20 percent of the soldiers avowed explicit proslavery purposes in their letters and diaries, none at all dissented from that view.

— James M. McPherson, For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War (1997), p. 110, emphasis in original.

Much more at link, including specific examples of racist and pro-slavery comments by Confederate soldiers in their private letters.

To be fair, most Union soldiers were also racist but they vehemently opposed slavery and saw its eradication as the focus of the war.

We are not particularly good at predicting what is going to happen in 2 years, let alone 8 years. I recall the certainty of many in the late 1980’s that Japan was in the ascendancy — their stock market was skyrocketing — and then suddenly it crashed and has not yet returned to its high water mark of 1989, indeed it’s still only about 2/3 of that height. Yes, China, which has a dynamic economy and the largest population, may indeed dominate the world in 8 years — or unforeseeable events could lead to a very different outcome.

Who needs a black swan? China is sitting on a huge pile of bad debt to state-related companies after over a decade of massive malinvestment (think ghost cities). The government thinks it needs a 6% annual economic growth rate to maintain some sort of social order. And Xi, by declaring himself essentially President-for-Life, broke the mechanism China used to allow for course corrections, so it’s going to be more of the same until it’s impossible to continue. I think Wile E Coyote’s been running on air for a while, but, as they say, countries have a lot of ruin in them.

I received a wireless video doorbell for Christmas and installed it today. I watched the walkway for hours waiting for somebody to come up to the door, of course when I stepped out in the backyard the doorbell rang and I totally missed the event. The infrared light at night significantly increases battery usage. Considering how long I’ve had the camera active and with infrared, this thing will last a long time in normal usage and maybe 24 hours with constant streaming.

Interesting, as are the responses.

The literal participation trophy, an actual trophy (or maybe a certificate or a ribbon) for showing up and doing your best in some event or endeavour is not the sudden downfall of society. They have existed for a very long time. Conservatives have most often associated it with Millenials, but such things have existed as long as there have been people.

A good example from my military service is the National Defense Service Medal. I was awarded that when I was in the Navy during the Gulf War. (At the time, I was stationed in Pittsfield, Massachusetts as a Navy Recruiter. I was never in danger from combat, just protestors.)

Regardless of whether you were a person stationed in Saudi Arabia poised to launch the counter-attack to take Kuwait back from Iraq, floating in the sea, or flying aircraft, you were in far more danger than I ever was, but we all got the same medal for that action. A National Defense Service Medal is very much a participation medal.

All the politicians wringing their hands over the removal of Confederate statues erected during Jim Crow, nearly every one of them has a college degree. Yet they are whinging over having their participation trophies removed from public land.

They are complaining about renaming bases after the participants who lost a war. Complaining renaming streets or buildings or parks named after the same second-place participants.

If that’s what college teaches you, I’m glad I didn’t go.

Except… these reality deniers are mostly those without college degrees, which is where these bunk theories became popular. How do we explain that?

I think social media is more to blame. The ability for nonsense to pose as vetted truth.—Hugh Howey

Hey Hugh, can I call you Dick? Okay it’s like this Dick. Bunk theories didn’t spring into existence because of social media. Everything from phrenology to eugenics to anti-vaxxers to every religion which ever existed have been promoted long before social media existed. None of that has anything to do with participation trophies, and everything to do with the desire to define an “other” so they are not in the “in” group.

Rothkopf is very indicative of what is a problem with the Democratic party elite.

Sure, Rothkopf’s family suffered in WWII, and his life pretty much tells the story of a child of the survivors.

Yet… he is very detached from the everyday life of the average American, to write the things he does. He is rich, very well paid (and had to register as an agent of a foreign government, a government who paid him well for this connections), and knows everyone one is supposed to know to be a somebody.

That, however, doesn’t mean he knows what he is talking about, especially when he wades outside his area of expertise (see Nate Silver.)

And as a professor he is almost to that point of turning emeritus. And as I’ve warned on numerous occasions, be wary of the emeriti.

It’s not just repackaged, it’s also more visible than ever due to amazing technology. And for some, more inviting. I still believe much of this madness has an appeal because we have no sense of community as a country. The “rugged individual” myth started this, but if you look at how we design new neighborhoods, many with no sidewalks or ways to even see your neighbors that often, what we find “entertaining” on tv(reality competition shows that encourage being shitty to others to win, etc), how prevalent bullying is that doesn’t even require in person contact, etc , none of it encourages working together to make things better and it sure as hell doesn’t encourage problem solving. This is a blanket cultural statement, there are always good people who try to help, but without a supportive culture, the problems and needs continue to grow.

The Washington Free Beacon has declared accused double murderer Kyle Rittenhouse one of its Men of the Year for 2020. Describing him as a “patriot” and a “righteous [man] of action,” the editors of the right-wing rag wrote that

[t]he good people of Kenosha can sleep easier because among us are the likes of 2020 Washington Free Beacon Man of the Year Kyle Rittenhouse.

That’s a pretty good comparison. So you have people feeling disconnected and that they don’t belong. Which isn’t new, but more amplified as communication methods have gone from phone and mail to online in all its forms. I mean being an online “influencer” can make the right person into a millionaire. Lives that are often an online illusion, not happy, not perfect.

I don’t know how to fix that. Or if it’s even fixable. But it’s not helpful. Expanded communication as both a blessing and a series of curses.

A few years back, Robert Peston had a documentary about it….How China Fooled the World. It discussed the Mauna Loa-sized mountain of debt China’s sitting on and how it could blow up right underneath them and have serious repercussions, not only for China but the entire global economy.

I keep thinking about those virtually empty cities that China has built…ghost cities. That said, I believe China could fill out those cities, but they can’t just keep building more to prop up the GDP and that is likely what is happening.

Hello, I am Bay Leaf! Someone at the co-op didn’t fish it out of the spaghetti sauce and I slurped that sucker down and it lodged right at the top of my wind pipe. After a minute (probably less) of gesturing at someone to HALP HALP, I did a self-Heimlich maneuver and out popped this “just the right size to cover a windpipe” piece of bay leaf. That really put me off eating in general for that day, and spaghetti in particular for a while after that.

… but if you look at how we design new neighborhoods, many with no sidewalks or ways to even see your neighbors that often, …

So I watch House Hunters, to see how reality (fake) TV is packaging the real estate business these days.

Now the show, as a reality show, is really about the drama the couples experience under pressure - that is why people watch the show.

But if one listens carefully to the sales pitches, then scrutinizes the product (house) being pushed, it is clear that (like other HGTV shows), little attention is paid to the really important things. At best you get couples bickering over commute time versus price.

It’s the usual game, of real estate sales people pushing naive clients through the process. In one recent episode a young couple, who could not agree with each other and didn’t want to compromise, was finally convinced by the sales person to see a new construction (which was a compromise for both and probably the best choice for their marriage).

When it came on screen some things popped out to me, as so typical of new-construction cheapness and things the sales person will not of course mention. However, the builder did put in sidewalks (was it required by the municipality?):

The Original Plandemic: Unmasking the Eerily Familiar Conspiracy Theories Behind the Russian Flu of 1889 (Forbes)

It doesn’t take Dr. Fauci to know that conspiracy theories have always been a predictable symptom of pandemics. More than a century ago, the truthers of the day tried to blame a deadly influenza outbreak on a similar technological innovation.

On January 31, 1890, the European edition of the New York Herald ran an item suggesting that the electric light was somehow responsible for a global influenza outbreak. After all, “the disease has raged chiefly in towns where the electric light is in common use,” the article noted, and went on to note that the disease “has everywhere attacked telegraph employees.”

The illness in question was the first modern influenza pandemic, known as the Russian flu or “La Grippe.” The disease likely emerged somewhere in the Russian Empire in 1889 and quickly spread around the world in successive waves. It took only four months to hit every part of the globe, with the United States seeing its peak in January 1890. More than a million people (of the 1.5 billion on earth) were killed worldwide in that first wave.

The Russian flu was in part a consequence of a newly globalized world. Railroads and transoceanic steamships were perfect conduits for the disease, accelerating its growth across countries and continents. As with Covid-19, the earlier pandemic also caused a spread of misinformation, conspiracies and countless dubious therapies. Instead of the internet, these ideas were promulgated by newspaper and telegraph—but the impact was similar.

I’m not saying take a job you hate. Be the best you can at whatever you choose, but be realistic about what you want and how you’ll get it.

I watched a show a few months ago about a boy from I believe Nashville who wanted to become an actor. The family supported him and Mom and son moved to Los Angeles. For months he went on audition after audition, worked with an acting coach, all that. After a year they went back home. So, lots of passion but fruitless nonetheless.

I know people with passions who are really good at that passion, but there is no market for it. Therefore, they have day-jobs.

The real problem with this is survivorship bias. You’re talking to people who have succeeded, giving advise to people who have yet to succeed. You never, ever see the people who haven’t succeeded; they’re uninteresting, see. The advise you get from the success stories could very well be useless, since it never accounts for the people who could have done all of this and fallen on their faces.

Imagine a coin-flipping contest, and inviting the winner of the contest to a talk. He flipped ten heads in a row! He can talk all he wants about motivation, how he practiced flipping coins every day, and how he visualized heads whenever he flipped a coin. But because the winner was invited after he succeeded, without regard to those who didn’t, what he tells you doesn’t help you flip a coin heads at all.

(And no, if you’re talking to a stage magician teaching you a trick, that’s a totally different story. Very clever.)

Another thing about Galloway - he’s a marketing prof.

As near as I can tell, his rant is just product differentiation for the Galloway brand (he constantly sells himself on TV.)

And while he’s a professed Trump despiser, he’s one of those who think the Dems are too concerned with PC and not enough with the so-called working class:

[Embedded content]

Of course promoting one of those NYT pieces that wants to blame the Democratic party for Trump finding a few bigots here and there to rally to him.

Because again, it’s only ever ‘identity politics’ and the like when it goes one way, in giving folks whose identity necessarily informs their politics a voice b/c of their marginalization. When it’s “White Working Class” and whose who with them to stand against extending the franchise to those marginalized if it personally aggrieves them in any way, it’s never ‘Identity politics’. It’s ‘economic anxiety’ or some such dumb shit like that.

Same thing with “PC”. It’s never considered “PC” when people scream about using “Merry Christmas” over “Happy Holidays” or scream about their own sort of language policing. It’s only ever “PC” when it’s about avoiding language that harms people tangibly, because that language is so dear to their ‘culture’ apparently that avoiding it is the real racism and prejudice, not misgendering, not ableism, not scrabbling and demanding to use slurs against other populations, etc.

The country is hellbent on the most exclusionary vision of itself that it can manage, and those allying with Republicans and conservatives on this will be on the firing line eventually once they run out of ‘others’ to raze, because they’ll never be ‘American’ enough to those who are convinced that they’re the only ‘Real Americans’ and the rest of us are just visiting under the supervision of their good graces.

Rothkopf and Galloway are typical of what I consider the intellectual failure of modern self-aggrandizing self-declared leaders associated with what many will think of as liberal intelligentsia: they are afraid to tackle the real problem.

Which is, specifically, that America is having a religious melt-down.

Trump is nothing more, and nothing less, than a profiteer of America’s worldview collapse.

Rothkop and Galloway don’t address the real problem of Christian fundamentalism in this country.

Then there’s Taylor Swift; her family moved from Pennsylvania to Nashville to support her music ambitions. It’s worked out pretty well for them.

Getting back to House Hunters… another recent episode is of a (very) young couple who decided to move to San Diego because they like it here. Now they want to buy a place.

Their budget is $300k.

For those not in the know, that is barely enough to buy one a garage here, much less an actual house.

So the real estate pusher is showing then condos.

But those condos are old, not well kept, and one of them I think is a rental that was turned into a condo long ago.

Now young people are by nature naive - not a sin, not unexpected, and totally expected so I don’t condemn them for it - but the reality is a real estate person ought to tell such a young couple, who moved here from a location where housing is much cheaper, to find more money before they shop.

Anyway, the truth is that young couple has a problem not of their own making.

They were born too late to be a first time buyer in coastal California.

If they had been born 50 years earlier, coming to San Diego in 1970 was doable for a young couple looking to buy their first place.

But in 2020, either the couple has to be both professionals pulling down six figures each, or they need parents willing to kick in a few hundred thousand dollars.

And this is something that the supposed truth tellers - Prof. Galloway comes to mind - aren’t so eager to say, because they can’t make money by saying it: sometimes one is just out of luck.

This is a start of a series on the alt-right, which the presenter notes there is no difference between conservatism and the alt-right.

The rules of “when they go low, we go high” will not work with conservatives, and such complaints as “PC” are simply tools to get what they want. They are not focused on the process (compromise, debate) but the results (a conservative utopia).

This series started during Mitch McConnell’s blocking of Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court, and continues into this week. Amongst other things, he accurately predicted how Donald Trump would behave and how he would be treated.

It is also a form of Identity Politics to just assume that Latino/black=Democrat and any Latinos and blacks who vote otherwise are a symptom of DiD Syndrome.

Sad part is that the GOP could appeal to a lot of Latinos especially, they tend to be socially conservative, family and religiously oriented and believe in hard work and the American Dream of a better life for one’s children.

But they also favor strong communities and strong public institutions like good schools and reliable health care, etc., all of which cost tax money. And the GOP only pays lip service to “family values” and are racist as fuck.

In part the Union soldiers viewed slavery as the division point leading to the split in the country - which was the official reason for the war from the Union side; that secession was illegal.

Part of what makes the Lost Cause apologetics laughable is that if you had been able to ask the participants why there was a war/rebellion was going on pretty much all of them would have been saying slavery was the root cause, not the silly justifications like tariffs and such.

I myself live in a “věžák”, a tower block - started seeing those here around the Brezhnev Era, though there are examples (for instance, in Kladno*) the predate that time. If they’re renovated and subsequently maintained, they’re not bad at all. Very utilitarian, but comfortable enough.

All of our affiliate’s Habitat plans include the vinyl shutter-mimics pegged through the siding. It’s about an afternoon’s work for a couple volunteers. That’s seen as a grace note for a housing solution constrained to “simple, affordable”.

Yeah, out here the lots in the 1970’s were often still over 6000 sq ft. The house I bought had a quarter acre, though some of it was hillside, which wasn’t really usable but meant at least I had greenery in back compared to another house.

So much construction starting especially in the 1990’s really crammed in the structures on small lots. So much of the new construction, even houses above a million dollars, now sit on lots bare larger than the McMansion sized house.

But that goes along with the society eschewing living things, like plants. Flippers hate plants - they usually destroy them, even trees. Even new construction often has no planting.

The excuse is saving water.

Which is a lie, because the close the houses means more houses per acre, and each house will consume water internally.

Oh, and any backyard is totally dedicated to a pool.

So no, there is no water saving by giving up on plants.

It’s all an excuse for a society of people who have no connection to the actual life that sustains us.

Anyway, the hard part of changing our lifestyle is convincing people that what matters is not the “investment” but life.

Does your credit union have an (convenient to reach) ATM that can take deposits?

My local bank branch is closed, but their ATM is available and I was able to deposit a few checks there a couple of months back.

A tip for those who bank with a credit union: if your CU is a CO-OP Network member, you have access to branch banking at participating CUs and to no-fee ATMs nationwide.

re: #188 Dr Lizardo

I have three meter high ceilings as well. I think it was done to add to the feeling of spaciousness in what’s otherwise a rather small space. But I’m fine with it.

My old apartment in an 1925-built office building had very tall ceilings. I think it was done to support the very tall windows and allow more light (and presumably air in a pre A/C environment) into the rooms.

Made for a nice place to grow window box plants given my south and west exposure. Was a bit of a bear to heat and cool though.
