The Photo of Georgia GOP Senator David Perdue Throwing a “White Power” Sign Is Legit

Politics • Views: 33,014

Yesterday I came across a photograph of Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga) on Twitter, showing him posing with two campaign workers, throwing the alt-right’s “ironic” white power sign. I posted this retweet of the image with a comment:

Almost immediately I started getting replies saying the image looked like it had been altered, focusing on this area in particular:

But since the image posted on Twitter was not a high-resolution image, it was difficult to prove either way. I’ve seen many low-res JPEG images that exhibit similar oddities, especially when you zoom in and look closely at a pixel level, because JPEG format uses a “lossy” compression algorithm that can distort sections of an image in unpredictable ways.

Today @BlueATLGeorgia posted a link to the original high-resolution (2048x1536) image on Facebook, and now the issue is settled — this photograph has not been altered. It’s perfectly legitimate.

In fact, it was posted at Facebook by a Republican campaign staffer.

Here’s that same section zoomed in to a similar level, but using the less distorted high-resolution image from the Facebook link above.

The higher-resolution image makes it very clear that it’s not an altered photo. The part that looks strange in the low-res image is actually part of Perdue’s thumb visible behind the bent index finger.

In the Trump era it’s no longer very shocking to see a major Republican politician — a US Senator — expressing this kind of gutter racism. He could claim ignorance, of course, or say he was tricked into it by the guys posing with him, but don’t let them get away with claiming the picture was “photoshopped.” It was not.

For the record…none of those white power hand signs are even remotely close to resembling the well-known “OK sign”

Perdue is also putting some serious muscle/tendon pressure into making that hand sign. Look at those freaking white knuckles.

Our Texas bro’s reaction to these efforts: they are a waste of time. So he’s not expecting anyone to overturn the results of the election.

Of course, he insisted today that Biden will be 25th Amendmented out by April; my sister pointed out that is a 2 month delay from his original prediction that will happen in February. He also is confident that the GOP will have a major landslide in the 2022 elections — taking back the House and a major increase in the Senate — because Americans will be so disgusted by the actions under a Democratic administration. And Warnock is unfit for office and should be in prison, though he had no rebuttal to our assertions that it is Loeffler who should face prison time for her insider trading which far exceeded anything that Martha Stewart did.

I’ll just say this once here and not bring it up again.

I get tired of being shamed for using Facebook and Twitter, especially by people WHO DO NOT USE THOSE PLATFORMS.

I get tired of being lumped into the Republican party nightmare just because I am registered just so I can vote in primaries where it makes a difference locally and statewide.

I get tired of constant religous shaming (even though I’m born and raised RC and now an atheist).

And I get so VERY FUCKING tired of the college/university education shaming (even though I was poor and paid for every dime of my BA even though it took me 12 years to get that degree).

Oh, and I’m pretty sure that Tesla does NOT deliver to my zip code. UPS does. FedEx does when it’s convenient for them. USPS is now completely problematical.

So let’s not talk about who is being controversial and needs to take a break from here, because it ain’t gonna be me and I will not apologize for it.

The Post Office is FUBAR thanks to Trump and DeJerk.

Folks complaining that Christmas packages they sent still are in limbo. Oh and I posted how I got my October dental insurance bill AFTER my November bill that invoked the grace period.

And the mail delivery is all fucked up. Mail for me goes in other boxes and my mail winds up scattered in other people’s boxes as well. Our reliable post lady found herself reassigned across town and she was given double the amount of blocks to deliver.

We now have a new hire and yes you guessed it he’s a Trumper based on his snide comments to Latinos in my building…

re: #14 Backwoods_Sleuth

We are all on edge here — but it’s not just because of the pandemic. We’ve been on edge since the election of Trump November 8, 2016. That’s disrupted any equanimity we possessed when Obama was in charge. Trump’s whole term of office was promotion of racism and bullying and an attack on morality, kindness, decency, and progress. And when November 3, 2020 seemed to signal the end of the nightmare — Trump started with his refusal to concede and continued with his efforts to undermine our election process and incite a second Civil War.

Let’s hope that January 6 will start the process of healing. Actually let’s hope that January 5th will be the real start, with the Dems winning Georgia (as unlikely as that is).

re: #46 The Pie Overlord!

We’re all stressed out and on edge and snapping at each other because of the ongoing slow motion attempt to destroy our Republic. The repeated attacks on the election results are getting on our last nerve.

We hang out here to find comfort, let’s not take that away from one another.

This. So much this.

I think I’m one of only two Lizards who’s ever met ‘Mouse (and Mrs. ‘Mouse) in person, and he’s the only Lizard I’ve ever met in person.

He’s a quirky guy. He’s lived through things none of us have ever experienced (I hope), and he has a bunch of very strong beliefs, not all of which I endorse or agree with. And when he gets his back up about something, he gets his back way up about something - and I totally understand why it can be infuriating to BWS and others, for very valid reasons.

But he’s on our team, ultimately. And our team isn’t as big as it ought to be.

I’m with the rest of you - jumpy as hell right now, in a constant doom-scrolling state of anxiety waiting to see what bullshit emerges on an hourly basis between now and January 20, counting down the minutes till we can get Georgia election results and we find out how good our odds are of beginning to fix all the vandalism inflicted on our country over the last four years.

I hate to see us start taking out our tensions on each other. I want to see us all survive this as a community, because it’s a damn good community with some of the funniest, smartest, nicest people anywhere on the intertubes, and I want to start enjoying better times with all y’all very soon.

So, there’s talk of refusing to seat the assholes, but whose call is that? Does security escort them out of the building - and so, whose security is on deck? How would that even work?

I’m tired of the Dems being aggrieved and doing nothing. I’m tired of the party living up to its reputation for being wimps. It’s becoming the left’s version of thoughts and prayers, while the Nazis whip the right into a dangerous fervor and hijack.every.process.

I mean, I think Biden’s dogs are neat and all, but what’s the fucking plan next week? I don’t suffer a doormat mentality, so this is really difficult to stomach.

The highest paid employees at almost every US college are the football coaches and staff. It’s just wrong. There has to be a better way to do things and take sports out of school. At every grade level. I knew kids in high school who got full scholarships who barely passed finals. I wanted college, but even in my time, when it was cheap, I couldn’t afford it. There just has to be a better idea than the way we do it now.

Every one of the 35 boys that graduated with me in high school who got football scholarships failed to get a degree.

Daughter1’s undergraduate gig at Auburn was English tutor to the Bowden-era team.

My college wasn’t big on football, but I had a couple of friends who were studying computer-related degrees (one was Comp Sci with me, one was Computer Graphic Arts) who were on the school’s lacrosse team, and I mentored them. Hardest damn day of my life up until then, when I was in class on a Monday after spring break and my comp sci student comes into class. He was about to find out what the rest of my wing already knew - three days before, one of our brothers and the wing’s future RA had been killed in a tragic accident when he was run over on his morning run back home. He came into class, and I had to break the news to him and keep him on the rails as we tried to finish class.

IANAL & CMIIW but I imagine that the piles and piles of “allegations” and “affidavits” were handled like this:

1. Lowest level legal professionals (interns) are given the “evidence” and sort it into “obvious BS” and “not obvious BS.” They pass on the “not obvious BS” to the next level professionals.

2. Second level takes the “not obvious BS” and winnows it again according to their abilities. They then pass what’s left to the next level.

3. Repeat until the pile has reached the top level and pass this to the judges.

The judges then decide it is BS (in 59 cases already).

re: #114 A hollow voice says,1st round on points. Onward!

Gotta say… this is perilously close to both-siderism. I’m not aware of anyone here proselytizing Christianity (or Judaism or Islam), nor calling for the rest of us to join twitter or facebook. Nor do we flaunt our educational attainments — except a few Ph.D.s who are temporarily compelled to because somehow they aren’t real if girls do them.

That wasn’t my intent - but it’s been a long day/week/year, and I’m probably not writing as clearly as I’d like. (See the rest of what I said about how we’re all strung out right now.)

Let me try to be clearer?

I’m not trying to defend the obsessive posting about certain pet topics - I don’t blame BWS for getting fed up with those posts or for reacting to them strongly. I’m a college graduate and a Jew who finds comfort and value in my religious tradition, and nothing anyone here writes is likely to change my mind about those things. And while I’ve largely taken myself off FB to save my sanity for the last few months, I don’t judge anyone who still uses the platform - and in fact I’m trying to find a way to get back some of the value that FB brought to me, at least where it comes to keeping tabs on a lot of far-flung friends and colleagues who aren’t easily reached elsewhere.

All I was trying to say is that I think it’s possible both to be annoyed at some of those posts - and to find value in the other things that ‘Mouse brings to the table here. I really enjoy the tales of life in a part of the country that’s so very different from my own. I’ve learned a lot about Nebraska politics (and follow State Senator Megan Hunt avidly now - she’s awesome!)

What I was trying to get at is that I think the present level of stress we’re all enduring has made us quicker than we might otherwise be to take offense. That’s not aimed at BWS… it was really aimed more at how quick Anymouse has been to threaten to flounce here over the years. (Which, in turn, may have some explanation in the things that he’s endured in his life… I try to be very conscious of all the struggles others are going through and to be as understanding as I can.)

I don’t post a lot about my particular obsessions here, in part because I have reasons to want to keep my IRL identity private, but also because I don’t want to annoy all of you whose good humor and kindness I value so much. I hope if I did get too annoying with anything I’m posting, that I’d react gracefully if some of you tell me as much.

And having had the pleasure (and it was!) of meeting ‘Mouse and his spouse when they drove through this way a few years ago, I hope he can do the same, because this space wouldn’t be the same without him, and I’d hate to lose his voice here completely.

Does that make sense, or am I being too squishy?

Reminds me of the University of North Carolina academic scandal:

An unusual B-plus grade on a football player’s transcript has unearthed an academic fraud scandal involving athletics at UNC-Chapel Hill. That grade ultimately pointed to nearly 190 lecture-style classes that never met from 1999 to 2011, as well as hundreds of bogus independent studies that had no instructor and date back to 1993.

A new report by a former top U.S. Justice Department official found that keeping athletes eligible was at the heart of the scheme. Nearly half the students enrolled were athletes, with some football and basketball players relying heavily on these “GPA booster” classes. Even a professor who later became UNC’s faculty leader steered athletes to the classes.

An observation: Our enemies are turning on each other like trapped rats. They are days from ripping each other to shreds. It is time for us to stay united, to avoid turning on ourselves in turn, even in a minor way. American conservatism’s 70 year campaign for absolute power is about to collapse completely. After decades of heartbreaking struggle, victory is in sight. We can see this through. 18 days.

A lot of my optimism is based on the abject desperation I see in the GOP’s rush to support the Trump coup. THEY believe they are doomed if it fails and they know where they buried the bodies and how many there are. For their part, the pulpit pimps have abandoned any pretense of political disinterest, completely sacrificing their future tax exemptions if the attempt to keep a cult friendly president in office fails.
All this also suggests that the rot is much deeper and more rancid than we have typically suspected.

It’s usually an iOS problem. Apple does something weird with rotational attributes that causes them to post sideways. I remember having to deal with it when I helped write an iOS app that used photo data.

I can’t get the pics to rotate on my phone. I know I should turn the phone sideways, but I just grab and take the pic. I’ll learn one day, lol.

Open pictures, load the picture you want, hit “edit,” rotate it to upside down, hit “save.” Then “edit” again, do it again, so it’s right side up. Now it will post properly.

Yeah, Perdue’s a fucking white nationalist throwing down the white power symbols.

All this discussion about the three finger salute reminds me of the scene from Inglorious Basterds where the Brits are found out by the German soldier because he ordered his liquor with the wrong three fingers.

You have to actually try to do that…

In one of the Die Hard movies, the bad guys were some red faction European terrorists… they had exactly perfect NYPD uniforms, they’d learned English with the proper American accent…

But Bruce Willis found them out when they told him to take the lift down to the car park.

Americans count index, middle, ring (123) fingers.

Germans count thumb, index, middle (123) fingers.

It’s what started the shooting in the bar scene.

I saw Inglorious Basterds in a theater when it came out, and I remember that scene very well - having lived here in Czech Republic for so long, when I saw that, my first thought was, “Aw shit, he just gave himself away as an American.” Czechs also do the thumb, index and middle fingers for three, just like Germans do.

It doesn’t matter where they are from. If the D’s could pull off that kind of fraud in Michigan and Georgia, why couldn’t/wouldn’t/didn’t they pull it off in Cali, Texas, or anywhere else?

Yes, and those 9 definitely should not be seated under that particular rationale. Under the broader issue, of course, that this is actually sedition, everyone challenging the election should be denied their seat under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. It’s not that they have detected a real problem with the votes in any of the states — their only problem is that their candidate lost.

I’m surely becoming more curmudgeonly as time goes by.

So I’m watching the latest season of Celebrity IOU, the show where the Scott brothers team up with someone famous to do good for said celebrity’s friend.

And I’m just offended by the whole thing.

First off, there is the underlying guilt-complex of celebrities who evidently think they need to help their public image.

Then there are the Scott brothers, who keep pushing their schtick, the center of which is convincing the English-speaking world that your kitchen just isn’t good enough.

Then there are the friends, the receivers of the help. Now obviously the show is as fake as the next “reality” TV show, but it’s worse than that. We’re supposed to believe that people with houses in SoCal, that have list prices above $1M (and perhaps substantially above a million), need the $100k or so to makeover a kitchen. And then somehow a design in which they were not involved is exactly what they want.

But here’s the thing: in the houses they’ve shown so far the places are fine, even good. The first episode has them tearing up a place that was already recently remodeled (according to Zillow the property was bought in April 2019 and the description describes the recent upgrades.)

The whole thing reeks of the problems of which we were warned in the documentary some time back The Century of the Self.

Now these shows on HGTV are not really about houses. Really. They are about emotions and relationships (in the first episode this means Jonathan Scott and his current squeeze Zoey. D. ) These shows are taking the place of what soap operas were 30 years ago combined with the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

This is what is wrong with America. This is why America elected a reality TV celebrity as President.

I iz confused. Where did Peter Navarro get his law degree? Did he pass the bar while working for Trump?

OTOH Josh Hawley does have a law degree from Yale and taught constitutional law so maybe having a law degree and passing the bar is worthless in understanding the Constitution or our legal institutions. The chain has just received 28k vaccines so far.

Early in the pandemic I remember reading an article about how exceptionally well-prepared H-E-B was for lockdowns, distancing, one-way traffic in store aisles etc. And protective gear for their staff. And early stocking up on paper products and shelf-stable foods.

Because middle-management had people who studied up on other countries and other pandemics and knew what needed doing, and upper management had people who listened to their staff and authorized all the preparations and expenses to pay for them.

re: #326 Belafon

The point being that the Nazis ultimately gained power by doing everything legally. They didn’t lead a revolution; the existing government gave them the power, and from there they rewrote everything in their favor.

That’s a different thesis from “everything the Nazis did was legal” and they didn’t really rewrite everything, most of their crimes were still against the laws on their own books, and the thesis “they came to power legally” is at the very least controversial (and in my opinion outright wrong, since they did not have the 2/3 of the votes necessary for the Ermächtigungsgesetz, their parliamentary trick being unconstitutional - tho there may be other opinions about that, but it’s far from proven that they came to power legally).

It’s been awful in western NY. I have Priority Mail packages that still haven’t arrived from the first week of December, and don’t even get me started on how far behind they are delivering magazines. I got one on Dec. 30 that had been mailed Nov. 30.

My sentence wasn’t a thesis, though I will say that my definition of legal means “can do it unless you can be punished,” the definition Republicans like to use. And the rest of your paragraph really describes the GOP. Think of their blocking Garland from the Supreme Court.

Their blocking was evil but entirely legal and cannot be punished legally, nor should it be. It should be punished politically, like expanding the SCOTUS etc.

Unlike, *arguably*, the Enabling law vote (as it was). Now, I will agree that tricks notwithstanding, the situation could have arisen where the Nazis would have truly legally overridden the Weimar Constitution with a real 2/3 majority (instead of the fictive one they conjured up). That was a built-in flaw in that Constitution, a one-shot democracy suicide option.

There’s no such *easy* option in the US constitution, but I think almost any Constitution pretty much provides an option for the death of a democracy. The US Constitution is no exception, it’s just the process is much longer.

I mean, *theoretically*, since the Constitution can be amended, the next amdt., if the voters so decide, could be the one that kills the Bill of Rights and the quasidemocratic voting process. That this won’t happen in the foreseeable future doesn’t mean that the option is not there.

The power of the Congress to kill the electoral votes is the closest it gets to the democracy-suicide-button (as elucidated in the very same ECA that Gohmert wants to kill). And this should be corrected somehow. Probably by a constitutional amdt. (there’s dreaming). But until then there’s simply no legal case for sedition or unconstitutional actions on the part of those who choose to vote that way (like there was no such case against those Dems who objected to the Ohio EVs in 2005).

I have a package that’s been sitting in Atlanta, somewhere, since Dec 22. Meanwhile, The Husband got stuff that was ordered after Christmas yesterday. I have another package I ordered yesterday, I guess we’ll see how that goes. I wonder if some parts of the country are worse than others with this. I also worry that the kid’s car payments aren’t going to get to where they need to be by the time he needs them to.(He pays by check and often will pay a few payments at once when he has extra money, I tried to talk him into paying online, but he keeps forgetting to set up the account) Hopefully USPS can get caught up now that holiday demand is about done. Just wondering if anyone else has stuff stuck in limbo and what part of the country you’re in.

My stuff that’s “lost” left the vendor in Aurora CO on Dec 2. It made it to Birmingham, AL on Dec 21 and then to Atlanta on Dec 22. It’s been sitting at one of 4 distribution centers since then. I can’t find an actual human to speak to, so I have no idea where it is exactly. I filed a missing mail report 2 days ago, got one standard response and then nothing else. This is the second report I’ve filed. The first one was ruled “resolved” because it was “on its way”. Next step is to file an insurance claim since it was sent out Priority Mail. What a pain in the ass.

Yes I posted before about getting my October AND November Dental insurance bills IN DECEMBER. Lots of complaints here in Los Angeles about people not getting their Christmas packages. USPS did major reshuffling here of personnel and post office assignments. Our reliable postlady was transferred across town and her delivery route doubled. Sorting machines were junked and never replaced so workers now have to hand sort everything. AND they’re sorting it wrong! I’m getting mail for other people in my building and they’re getting my mail! Our new postman is a MAGAT who has been awfully rude to Latinos in my building.

I’m obviously not a Georgian. Since I’m in Texas, I would love to be in the position Georgia Democrats are in. But, in the general election, Warnock led Loeffler, while Perdue led Ossoff. The only reasonable explanation for that is that the accusations of trading and other issues hurt Loeffler. Thus, being able to get out a message is still important.

“Bean Dad” is trending on Twitter right now, because some apocalypse dad had his hungry 9 YO daughter struggle with a can opener for six hours before he showed her how to use it to open a can of beans. Oh yeah, and dad was working a jigsaw puzzle at the same time. While a few people are cheering him for treating his daughter like this, most people are telling him he was a jerk. I agree with the latter. This is sucky parenting.

What kind of can opener would take a 9 year old six hours and noy figure out how to use?

They will be exercising the rights given to them by the Constitution, so legally it’s neither violating the Constitution nor sedition.

It’s violating the spirit of democracy, but that’s another thing altogether.

If I go to my local police department and tell them my house has been burglarized and provide a list of items taken, that action is perfectly legal if my report is true or is what I believe to be true. If, however, I am lying, my action is a crime.

The members of the Senate and most of the members of the House who are taking this action are lying and they know they are lying. That is a crime and it is sedition because it is a deliberate attempt to overturn the results of an election. If both Houses were controlled by Republicans, they could very well get away with this.

There are other explanations. A black preacher is going to have more credibility with the Democratic base in Georgia than a white liberal. Furthermore, people have elected Perdue, and that incumbency counts for something, while an out of touch rich white woman who is an outsider and was given her seat isn’t going to command the same advantage. Overall I think Warnock has a chance. Not a good one, but a chance.

Given the number of 55+ communities in the area, they have likely been hammered with old folks asking if the vaccine is ready yet.

The second a cat comes into your life, you are no longer the boss of anything. No exceptions. Try doing that with a cat, lol, I crack myself up.

My GD that phone call makes the Ukraine phone call seem “perfect.”

Let’s remember — we have never heard the actual Ukraine call nor have we seen a complete transcript of that call, but only what Trump released.

Nice to know that advanced civilizations on other worlds have self-annihilated…

The Milky Way is probably full of dead civilizations

Most of the alien civilizations that ever dotted our galaxy have probably killed themselves off already.

That’s the takeaway of a new study, published Dec. 14 to the arXiv database, which used modern astronomy and statistical modeling to map the emergence and death of intelligent life in time and space across the Milky Way. Their results amount to a more precise 2020 update of a famous equation that Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence founder Frank Drake wrote in 1961. The Drake equation, popularized by physicist Carl Sagan in his “Cosmos” miniseries, relied on a number of mystery variables — like the prevalence of planets in the universe, then an open question.

This new paper, authored by three Caltech physicists and one high school student, is much more practical. It says where and when life is most likely to occur in the Milky Way, and identifies the most important factor affecting its prevalence: intelligent creatures’ tendency toward self-annihilation.

That has always been my main theory on why we have no evidence of advanced life on other star systems: every intelligent life form with technological capabilities eventually self-destructs. There may be aliens who live a pastoral life and have shunned technology, but we wouldn’t detect their presence.

That is a lot of speculation since we still haven’t found any life on any other planet, much less technologically advanced life. Though the one example we do have does seem determined to annihilate itself.

Lucky! (Ham and Lima beans was universally hated when I was on Active in the early 80’s before we got MRE’s)

Ham and Eggs, Chopped or Turkey Loaf were almost as horrific.

I did like the Spaghetti meal and if you had the time to stew them, the Track Pads and Road Wheels (aka slices of beef and potato, interleaved.) could be made edible.

Pound cake & fruit cocktail were major wins too. For some reason, apricots were considered bad luck in Armor units and forbidden on tanks.

We called the ham and motherfuckers. I would eat them. I was going to eat the can of them that I opened. “Godammit! I didn’t really expect to see any ham, they didn’t even add the motherfuckers!’
I would eat H&MFers before I opened a can of chopped ham and eggs. That shit was vile. Peaches and pound cake was the prize.

That is one theory. We still don’t know how often life arises when liquid water is present, how often life evolves into multicellular animals, how often those animals develop intelligence, and how often intelligent animals develop technologically sophisticated civilizations.

Wow.

If this isn’t a mafia don talking, I don’t know what is:

“So tell me, Brad, what are we going to do? We won the election, and it’s not fair to take it away from us like this,” Trump said. “And it’s going to be very costly in many ways. And I think you have to say that you’re going to reexamine it, and you can reexamine it, but reexamine it with people that want to find answers, not people who don’t want to find answers.”

Just when I think he can’t possibly be more repulsive, he proves me wrong.

Mom AND Dad struggled to get that one to work. Remember the time Dad brought a box of old school C-Rations home and out of curiosity we TRIED to open the cans with that gizmo. Mom joked that it would probably take 3 weeks of Basic Training to figure out how to get it to work…Finally Mom just put the cans in our regular opener and the main dish was lima beans with chunks of ham which tasted pretty good!

High tech means force multiplication of manpower, which means it takes fewer and fewer people to create a situation that destroys the planetary civilization, whether that’s a single spectacular accident or the people with power playing brinksmanship with what nature can bear.

It’s not just that there’s a bunch of dead planets out there, it’s that there’s a bunch of murdered planets and planets that died because of someone’s stupid stunt.

“If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.”

Sedition:
(1) Conspire to overthrow
(2) Put down, or
(3) destroy by force the government of the US, or
(4) to levy war against them,
(5) or to oppose by force the authority thereof,
or prevent.

Force is not prerequisite for all elements of sedition. It’s for some. You can engage in sedition without use force. Conspiring to overthrow is sufficient.

What these GOPers are doing right now is conspiring to overthrow the government legitimately elected.
