Lyrics:

Ever since the world’s existed
There’s one thing that is certain
There are those who build walls
And those who open doors
Ah but this my love I’m thinking you already knew

For some it’s always winter
While others have the spring
Some people find good fortune
While others never find a thing
Ah but this my love is something you already knew

That’s how it’s always been
And I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
I’m going to say that again
Because I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it

Of what use is the moon if you don’t have the night?
Of what use is a windmill with no Quixote left who’ll fight?
Ah but this my love is something you already knew
At some point on the horizon
Sky can be confused with earth
Some people dream of God
While others dream of wealth
But of course my love this is what you see out on the street

It’s how it’s always been
And I know you know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
Let me say that again
Because I know that we both know it
There can be freedom only when nobody owns it
When nobody owns it
When nobody owns it
When nobody owns it
When nobody owns it

Ever since the world’s existed
There’s one thing that is certain
Some people build walls
Others open doors

But would Jackson Browne call Trump a motherfucker? I bet he would. It needs to done. Daily. Hourly. Out loud. Because he is.

Refrigerator thought: Wasn’t it Georgia that Trump called once already, previously, trying to influence election officials? I don’t think, at that time, there was any discussion of outright illegal actions, but I feel like I remember Trump leaning on Raffensperger once before.

Yes. He has tried on several occasions.

I know I’m not the only one, but I can’t help shake the thought that Trump expected an outside actor or even an inside actor to throw him the election based on 2016 (and not based on conspiracy this time). When it didn’t happen or was thwarted by Krebs’s crew, it must have been a WTF moment for him. That’s my CT and I’m sticking to it!

re: #12 NO SMOCKING GUN!

I’m not sure why everyone is acting shocked by any of this. We knew Trump and *his* Senators were calling state officials and whining to them. We’ve known this for awhile.

Even if some of these other calls “went better for him”, it still changed nothing.

The 16 electoral votes isn’t enough for Trump to win, but that’s not his (main) goal. He want to overturn just one state, so that he can spend the rest of his life on TV bitching about rigged elections with his one state victory as proof AND it will keep him from losing to Biden by a margin bigger than Hillary lost to him, which his toddler ego CANNOT abide.

18
Nyet  Jan 3, 2021 • 3:00:47pm

BTW, Trumpanzee gave up the game not even when he said that he wants to find additional votes, but when he specifically named the number of the difference + 1 vote, that is, it cannot be argued to be about finding all the stolen votes as such.

Hey folks, just something to keep in mind…Trump can’t overturn the election with just Georgia. He needs to try and roll over other states. I suspect, given her hysterical tweet, that Kelli Ward, current head of the Arizona GOP got called by Trump. Our Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is a Democrat and Doug Ducey has senatorial ambitions, which would completely be blown to smithereens in this now purple state.

Maybe if they hadn’t encouraged conspiracy theories on their base, they wouldn’t have this issue. A lot of this goes back to the fact that the GOP base has had an extended temper tantrum since President Obama won his first election twelve years ago. The only reason why Trump rose in politics is birtherism and Republicans as high up as the VP nominee nurtured that shit.

The Bill Kristol in my mind is the Bill Kristol of the W. Bush years.

Same. Even fucking Bolton sometimes sound reasonable. And then there’s Joe Walsh. I still don’t know how that happened. Then there’s the flip side which are the Jimmy Dores and Greenwald, self fancied progressive than thou but really the worst enablers of Trump because of their hatred of the Democratic establishment.

An Election Commission did decide what voter fraud occurred. The answer was the same as what the courts, the states, and the Democrats have all been saying: NONE WHATSOEVER (well, except for those guys John Fetterman found in PA… Speaking of which, pick up the damn phone and tell Dan Patrick to pay up)

I just had the funniest thought of what Trump would look like after 6 months in prison. Pale, wrinkled, overweight, and nobody to style his hair. Maybe not Harvey Weinstein level of repulsiveness, but close.

Losing his image would kill him faster than losing the presidency. It would be on par with his dick falling off and losing his manliness. There’s no swagger that could make that level of devolved look better. Special privileges? None. Treat him like the thousands of people doing hard time for bullshit charges like marijuana.

Well, Lindsey said the Christmas Day calls were about the covid bill, but who knows:

“We’d hit a shot, take a phone call. Hit a shot, take a phone call. Hit a shot, talk about what’s a good deal,” Graham said in an interview Monday. “It was a very intense Christmas Day.”

Also—put this at the end of the last thread, but bears repeating—just when you thought today couldn’t get any more stupid:

Trump on Monday is expected to give Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, according to someone familiar with the plans.

Jennifer Rubin has gone as hard after Republicans as she has Trump—her close today:

There must be a response to a president who exploits his office for the purpose of overthrowing an election. The evidence is on tape. The next attorney general should move forward, if for no other reason, to deter further attempts at such reprehensible conduct. I would suggest impeachment as well, which could include a ban on holding office in the future, but we know already Republicans will defend anything Trump does.

Yep. Rubin is as mad at republicans as Steve Schmidt.

And has been for quite some time. From September:

My Twitter blurb used to describe me as a “conservative opinion writer.” Now it reads: “NeverTrump, pro-democracy opinion writer.” Why the change?

Let’s be honest: There is no conservative movement or party today. There is a Republican Party thoroughly infused with racism and intellectually corrupted by right-wing nationalism. But there is no party that believes in less or small government (though expect the GOP to hypocritically resume singing that tune as soon as a Democrat steps into the Oval Office)…

For now, the objective remains removal of Trump and obliteration of a party that has grievously betrayed democracy and abandoned simple decency and honesty. Whatever alternative to the toxic waste dump of the Trump GOP arises to replace it may be worth considering — but only if it embodies the most basic American creed (“We the people…”) and abandons veneration of authoritarianism.

And if he asked for something illegal to be done I suspect that it loses any confidentiality protections since otherwise the Georgia side is being complicit in the conspiracy.

Putting everything in context, then: Trump filed suit in court (his SCOTUS briefing refers to the state action; the tweet referenced upthread also includes a federal action). The requested relief is unclear because the cases haven’t posted to PACER yet, but the implication from the thread I posted earlier is that it relates to his cases not getting a fair hearing under the Due Process Clause. He then called the defendants - Kemp is listed as the first defendant in the state action, I didn’t see if he was on the call in the transcript; presumably Raffensperger and Germany are also on the list. As part of his “terms of settlement”, Trump demanded that the Secretary of State switch the vote totals so that Trump won the election in Georgia. It was assumed by all parties on the Trump side of the call that this would remain confidential (and possibly covered by attorney-client privilege - there was an attorney in the room). Obviously, since the request itself was a criminal act, that negates attorney-client privilege and confidentiality. Someone, presumably someone intelligent on the Georgia side although some reports indicate the recording sounds like it was made on the White House side, recorded the call, released it to the Washington Post, and now we’re here.

And if he asked for something illegal to be done I suspect that it loses any confidentiality protections since otherwise the Georgia side is being complicit in the conspiracy.

It is also a breach of legal ethics to threaten criminal charges in an attempt to resolve a civil matter.

Aged at least 10 years maybe more. I never looked my age, (good genes from my mom’s side). Now I look older than I am. The stress of tRump ripping our country apart and doing his best to destroy everything I care about has taken a big toll. Add the Covid breakdown, and there you go.

I look in the mirror and see my dad there now. He’s 82 and I’m not yet 50… but damn, did I go gray and wrinkly this past year.

re: #190 thedopefishlives

Correct. Attorney-Client confidentiality cannot be used to cover-up ongoing criminal activity.

re: #170 BeachDem

And has been for quite some time. From September:

My Twitter blurb used to describe me as a “conservative opinion writer.” Now it reads: “NeverTrump, pro-democracy opinion writer.” Why the change?

Let’s be honest: There is no conservative movement or party today. There is a Republican Party thoroughly infused with racism and intellectually corrupted by right-wing nationalism. But there is no party that believes in less or small government (though expect the GOP to hypocritically resume singing that tune as soon as a Democrat steps into the Oval Office).

For now, the objective remains removal of Trump and obliteration of a party that has grievously betrayed democracy and abandoned simple decency and honesty. Whatever alternative to the toxic waste dump of the Trump GOP arises to replace it may be worth considering — but only if it embodies the most basic American creed (“We the people…”) and abandons veneration of authoritarianism.

washingtonpost.com

Yeah, but this just means that Rubin wasn’t paying attention for…and I am being generous…16 years prior to Trump’s election.

Like, welcome to the side lady but you can’t discern object permanence.

This is the problem with the who “well now they’re the resistance” thing with all these conservatives: it doesn’t matter what they’re doing now, they’ve spent decades setting up this disaster. It doesn’t matter what degree they’re operating in good faith or not, since their published opinions for decades have been unreal garbage and no one should take them seriously comparing the outcomes to their body of predictions.

Officials in the secretary of state’s office recorded Saturday’s call, and Mr. Raffensperger told his advisers that he did not want to release a transcript or a recording unless the president attacked state officials or misrepresented what had been discussed, according to a person familiar with his direction.

As expected, that attack came in a tweet on Sunday morning, in which Mr. Trump claimed that Mr. Raffensperger “was unwilling, or unable, to answer questions such as the ‘ballots under table’ scam, ballot destruction, out of state ‘voters’, dead voters, and more. He has no clue!”

IANAL, but doesn’t this mean that Trump broke confidentiality?

They will say or do literally anything. Otherwise, they see their world coming to an end January 20th. I wish I shared their pessimism but we know from experience that conservatism is a malignant Hydra and it will take more than a new administration to finally beat the life out of it. We are making progress though and this new step is the most crucial yet. Perhaps (as Churchill said of the end of the North African campaign) it is “the end of the beginning.”

It sounded like someone in the room at the White House recorded the call. Because Trump doesn’t sound like he’s on the phone.
