What I would like to see in the next couple of days:

1. Congress reconvenes this evening to finish EC count.
2. Entire Capitol Police force is suspended pending investigation. DC Police and The FBI with support from MD and VA NG are deputized to act as capitol police in the mean time.
3. Tomorrow bills are voted on to expel Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz (and anyone else up to their level of fuckery in this matter) from the Senate and Louie Gohmert (and anyone else up to his level of fuckery) from the House. They will be referred to the DOJ for possible Sedition charges under the US Code section that people keep bringing up.
4. After they are sent packing, then even if Pence has invoked the 25th Amendment, House votes on Articles of Impeachment. Send to Cruz and Hawley-less Senate immediately for trial.
5. Congress votes on Bill to change Inauguration Day to the next day for 2021, then to 1 month after election day from then on.

I know… probably none of this will happen.

re: #48 Charles Johnson

Trump was busy cheering on the people who stormed the Capitol as his people. Hard to square that circle. This is what Trump wanted. These were his people.

Trump condoned this terror attack. His base cheered this on. A few concerned GOPers didn’t think this was a problem right until they were forced to evacuate Pence and everyone had to run for safe spaces in the LOBs. Only then did they find their voice to issue half-hearted condemnations of the violence, which they were more than willing to incite by backing Trump’s insane conspiracy theories.

The resumption of the joint session should occur only after the GOP agrees to unanimously support Biden as next POTUS and confirm the EC counts. Anyone failing, should be called out and expelled as insurrectionists.

Zero tolerance. Law and order. That’s what this means. We don’t tolerate insurrection, and what the GOP has been doing has been inciting to insurrection and overthrow the legitimate transfer of power.

Meanwhile, we’ve got reports that the NG was called out by Pence, not Trump, which raises questions over the chain of command all while other reports are suggesting Trump’s out of his mind.

That would necessitate the 25A/impeachment, but if the GOP and Cabinet refuse to remove on 25A grounds, are there even enough GOPers in the Senate willing to remove? This is how Trump has wrecked the nation and the entire democratic experiment by being so corrupt and compromised that he compromised his entire political party by radicalizing the base to act out in violence when they don’t get their way.

They have shadow cabinets ready to go. We don’t.

Again… We aren’t a parliamentary system. Don’t expect ours to function as one or solutions for one to work at all here.

The EC would have to be ditched before even thinking of making a less than 2-week transition a thing. That requires a constitutional amendment. I don’t believe moving the inauguration day itself does.

If 16 senators were grouped together for expulsion, the total number of Senators deciding their fate would be 86. 2/3 of that would be 56. Democrats would only need six Republican votes.

140 House members up for expulsion means we only need 2/3 of 195 - or 197 votes to expel them all together.

Just doing math here…not sure if defendants get to vote on their own behalf.

Comment on Charlie Pierce’s last post of the day, about the insurrection at the Capitol:

In addition to the accompanying picture showing the stand off at the entrance doors, my kid, who knows his way around the internet, was showing me video after video of the Capital Police in a bloody skirmish inside the building with these anarchists. I believe ultimately they were outnumbered and retreated. He also showed me the video of the female protester getting shot. Make no mistake, she was dressed up in all the appropriate Trump cosplay. While she was on the ground, into the video storms the gun toting marpers announcing “active shooter!” and gettign into defensive positions, which proves this was an armed insurrection. All of these videos are on the internet so identifying and prosecuting these people is possible; whether anyone takes the time to do it is another story. The Chicago Police are still arresting looters from last summer using security footage, so I know it is possible.

My response to your question, though, is I think this was a result of racism. If the rally was a black lives matter rally the entirety of the 1500 capital police would have been either on duty or on call. In this instance it appears they just assumed this was a dog and pony show.

Fuck that fucking bitch and her sudden decision to support that constitutional oath she took. She, along with the rest of the GOP, are goddamn traitors and deserved to be tossed out of Congress and immediately arrested and tried for sedition. There is no walking back what they did.

Oh, no. It wasn’t bullshit. They were planning kid gloves from moment one.

Never forget that if these had been BLM there’d dozens of bodies in the streets.

The cops are part of the enemy forces lined up against America.

Per Rand Paul, the Republican wall has collapsed. They’re going to stop contesting the states.

God damn if holding a failed insurrection doesn’t take the wind out of their sails.

Fuck Paul and every single republican that supported this orange, paranoid, would-be dictator motherfucking asshole! Try them all and then let them twist in the wind from the nearest oak tree.

That, and until this year it would always be better to have the predecessor’s staff in place in case something devastating happened internationally during the interregnum, rather than trying to spool up the new government from a cold start to the point where it could respond.

That said, if the governmental handover had had to be before November 9th the damn thing would have certified with the wrong man winning!
