#SongsOfComfort: Yo-Yo Ma and Wu Tong, “Rain Falling From Roof”

“Rain Falling from the Roof,” composed by and performed with my dear friend Wu Tong 吳彤. Here’s his story of the music. #songsofcomfort #songsofchange #SDG3 #SDG12 Silkroad

“There is a story from the the Northern Song Dynasty, where a novice monk asks a renowned Zen master about the meaning of Buddhism. The master points to the raindrops falling from the eaves of a roof. The novice monk, after being perplexed for a long time, suddenly experiences an epiphany.
It was during a rainstorm that I first read this story. At that time, the entirety of humankind was dealing with the trials of the coronavirus pandemic. Upon hearing the sound of the falling raindrops, I was reminded that people depend upon peaceful coexistence with each other and with Mother Nature to live in true harmony. No one exists in isolation.”

This video was originally released on August 14, 2020, as part of Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsOfComfort project, which was launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide comfort in a time of anxiety and fear. The project inspired thousands of people around the world to upload their own songs of comfort in the months that followed.

NYT:

“…It was Mr. Perry, a member of the hard-line Freedom Caucus, who first made Mr. Trump aware that a relatively obscure Justice Department official, Jeffrey Clark, the acting chief of the civil division, was sympathetic to Mr. Trump’s view that the election had been stolen, according to former administration officials who spoke with Mr. Clark and Mr. Trump.
Mr. Perry introduced the president to Mr. Clark, whose openness to conspiracy theories about election fraud presented Mr. Trump with a welcome change from the acting attorney general, Jeffrey A. Rosen, who stood by the results of the election and had repeatedly resisted the president’s efforts to undo them.”

“As the date for Congress to affirm Mr. Biden’s victory neared, Mr. Perry and Mr. Clark discussed a plan to have the Justice Department send a letter to Georgia state lawmakers informing them of an investigation into voter fraud that could invalidate the state’s Electoral College results. Former officials who were briefed on the plan said that the department’s dozens of voter fraud investigations nationwide had not turned up enough instances of fraud to alter the outcome of the election.
Mr. Perry and Mr. Clark also discussed the plan with Mr. Trump, setting off a chain of events that nearly led to the ouster of Mr. Rosen, who had refused to send the letter.”

It will be really hard for him to do all that shit if they cooperate with investigations. There’s at least a dozen different things that can put him away past the next election cycle or three. Even if there’s no convictions, he’ll be tied up in bullshit for years.

Then he’ll probably be dead because he’s a morbidly obese 80+ year old with a horrific diet and a drug problem and stress is a killer.

I will be amazed if Trump is still alive in 2024 based on how he takes care of himself considering the amount of stress he’s going to be looking at on top of being broke and like a billion dollars in debt.

Kirk lost for many reasons — but that wasn’t one of them. He never recovered his intellectual acuity after his stroke, but the fatal blow to his campaign was this exchange with Duckworth during a debate.

She had said, “My family has served this nation in uniform, going back to the Revolution. I’m a daughter of the American Revolution. I’ve bled for this nation.” In reply to this statement, Kirk mocked her by retorting: “I had forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington”. That snarky comment doomed his campaign; her mother may have been Thai but her father’s family traced its heritage back to the Revolution.

Governor Ricketts now says that vaccinations will not proceed for 65+ and preëxisting conditions before Spring at the earliest.

It will take up to four months to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to the next priority group, including Nebraskans 65 or older, under current allocations of vaccine to the state, Gov. Pete Ricketts said Friday.

That would push vaccination of the general public in Nebraska close to June.

Estimates are based on the current allocation of 94,000 doses a month to the state and the expectation that at least 75% of the newly prioritized population of 500,000 would choose to be vaccinated.

Increased production and supply of vaccine, which President Joe Biden has identified as his initial priority, presumably could accelerate the pace of vaccination along with the possibility of an additional supplier, Ricketts noted at a news briefing.

Vaccination of people in the huge new priority category, which includes critical infrastructure workers, is likely to begin in Lancaster and Douglas counties during the first week in February, the governor said.

Vaccination timeline for 65 or older stretches into spring (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

There’s the party of free market enterprise at it again.

By the way, Senator, the state doesn’t have that authority. Twitter and Facebook have the capability of suing Nebraska into the poorhouse though.

Gotta keep those conservative voters outraged with lies and a culture war though, rather than do something useful for your constituents.

Senator seeks to fine social media giants for disabling or censoring Nebraskans’ accounts

LINCOLN — A Nebraska lawmaker wants to do what former President Donald Trump was unable to accomplish — make social media giants pay for disabling, suspending or censoring users’ accounts.

State Sen. Curt Friesen of Henderson [R-Legislative District 34], the Legislature’s Transportation and Telecommunications Committee chairman, has introduced a proposal this legislative session that would fine social media companies for violating Nebraska users’ free speech rights.

Legislative Bill 621, the Social Media Fairness Act, would hold companies to the same free speech standards as governments. Each violation would be punishable by a $100,000 fine.

Michael Warren Davis is the editor of Crisis Magazine, an imprint of the Catholic outlet Sophia Institute Press (the press also publishes EWTN’s hosts).

He is also a contributor to The Federalist. In Crisis he makes the case for taking the right to vote away from women, and for monarchism.

What he’s arguing for at The American Conservative is the Estado Novo, the fascist regime established from the Ditadura Nacional (national dictatorship) by António de Oliveira Salazar. It was explicitly corporatist, anti-democratic, and anti-decolonial (to maintain Portugal’s vast ancient colonial empire).

When Salazar died in 1970 after a series of Portuguese combat losses (in the case of the Portuguese colony of Goa in India, the Nixon administration supported fascist Portugal), the Estado Novo government was overthrown in 1974 by left-wing military officers, who eventually put Portugal on the path of democracy. Portugal’s colonial wars were extremely unpopular with the masses, so the military coup was supported by the people.

Portugal suffered two years of unstable governance, with a combined military-civilian government installed in 1975 and the first free elections in fifty years in 1976 for a civilian government.

Fascist Spain considered invading Portugal during that period, concerned socialists would gain a footing in Portugal, though Franco ultimately chose not to. In 1975, the last of Portugal’s overseas colonies (except Macau) were independent.

This is a good occasion to repost this gem:

There is only conservatism. No other political philosophy actually exists; by the political analogue of Gresham’s Law, conservatism has driven every other idea out of circulation. There might be, and should be, anti-conservatism; but it does not yet exist. What would it be? In order to answer that question, it is necessary and sufficient to characterize conservatism. Fortunately, this can be done very concisely. Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect…

…There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time. For millenia, conservatism had no name, because no other model of polity had ever been proposed. “The king can do no wrong.” In practice, this immunity was always extended to the king’s friends, however fungible a group they might have been. Today, we still have the king’s friends even where there is no king (dictator, etc.). Another way to look at this is that the king is a faction, rather than an individual.

As the core proposition of conservatism is indefensible if stated baldly, it has always been surrounded by an elaborate backwash of pseudophilosophy, amounting over time to millions of pages. All such is axiomatically dishonest and undeserving of serious scrutiny. Today, the accelerating de-education of humanity has reached a point where the market for pseudophilosophy is vanishing; it is, as The Kids Say These Days, tl;dr . All that is left is the core proposition itself — backed up, no longer by misdirection and sophistry, but by violence.

So this tells us what anti-conservatism must be: the proposition that the law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone, and cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone….

The core proposition of anti-conservatism requires no supplementation and no exegesis. It is as sufficient as it is necessary. What you see is what you get…

Minor correction: the Indian invasion and seizure of Goa (and the other bits of Portuguese India) occurred in December of 1961, so it was the Kennedy Admin, not Nixon’s, who were in place to criticize it.
And it seems that US displeasure at the Indian action was not so much support for Portuguese fascists, but a general disapproval of seizure of territory by force (always a Bad Thing when done by somebody else).
Also, the Soviets and their bloc were generally approving of the Indian action, so there was that…

Conservatism has never been democratic, except insofar as conservatives control the democracy.

It is why Edmond Burke (the so-called father of conservatism) argued strenuously against rising democratic forces in Europe, particularly France. In his view, the French aristocracy failed not because it was autocratic, but because it had poor aristocrats (the ancient version of “conservatism can’t fail, it can only be failed.”) Burke’s solution was to oppose democratic governance wherever it might break out.

When democratic governance started sweeping Europe and it was clear that conservatism could not oppose it, Burke then proposed using the rising system of capitalism to control democracies (what both Adam Smith and Karl Marx argued against).

With few exceptions, autocratic regimes are driven by conservative causes: Portugal’s Estado Novo noted above, Spain’s Falangists, Italy’s fascists, Germany’s Nazis, the USA’s slaveowner plantation economies.

re: #86 Jay C

Minor correction: the Indian invasion and seizure of Goa (and the other bits of Portuguese India) occurred in December of 1961, so it was the Kennedy Admin, not Nixon’s, who were in place to criticize it.
And it seems that US displeasure at the Indian action was not so much support for Portuguese fascists, but a general disapproval of seizure of territory by force (always a Bad Thing when done by somebody else).
Also, the Soviets and their bloc were generally approving of the Indian action, so there was that…

You are correct. I’m confusing my dates. Too many wars to keep track of in the XX Century.

Nixon’s declassified tapes in 2020 showed Nixon’s racism and sexual repulsion toward India and support of Salazar, but that was after Goa had been already conquered. Those ideas are what drove Nixon’s foreign policy against India (driving India closer to the Soviet Union during that period).

Nixon also calls Indians “most sexless”, “nothing” and “pathetic”, according to the tapes.

“As Americans grapple with problems of racism and power, a newly declassified trove of White House tapes provides startling evidence of the bigotry voiced by President Richard M. Nixon and Henry Kissinger, his national security adviser,” Gary Bass, professor at Princeton, wrote in an opinion piece ‘The Terrible Cost of Presidential Racism’ in The New York Times.

Richard Nixon, a Republican, was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 until 1974.

Nixon said in a conversation that Indian women are “undoubtedly the most unattractive women in the world.”

“The full content of these tapes reveal how the US policy toward South Asia under Nixon was influenced by his hatred of, and sexual repulsion toward, Indians,” Bass says. He is the author of ‘The Blood Telegram: Nixon, Kissinger and a Forgotten Genocide.’

Declassified: Former US Prez Nixon called Indians ‘pathetic, most sexless’ (The Federal, September 5, 2020)

Such an attitude by the Republican president and his Secretary of State might also explain some of the hatred shown toward Vice-President Harris today (besides Black).

That’s the “extra” which is in every vaccine vial, which Pfizer itself noted is normal, to ensure every dose is full-strength.

With a different type of syringe you can get at it, and because the whole country is desperate to get the vaccine, they have the bully pulpit (pay us or else).

I am not a physician or nurse, but that would make me wonder if that “sixth dose” actually comes out full-strength.

If they abandon democracy how can they call themselves conservatives? If they aren’t in favour of conserving democracy they are either authoritarians or barbarians.

I’ve never thought of conservatism as being tied to democratic values. It does depend on the context — but political/religious conservatism is associated with preserving “traditional” customs/values, however those are defined, and not particularly open to new experiences, looking to the past and not the future, retaining the old power structure and old families, not admitting others who look/act/believe differently into the ruling class.

Poking around the vehicle registration site for Nebraska. If we keep our car twenty-two more years, we can get antique plates for the Smart. (They’re boring plates though, just green print on white.) Alternatively, we could get “vintage” status (which means using plates which were in force during the year the car was made as long as they are not specialty plates).

In either case though you can only register the car that way for special events and purposes.

If both the car and me are still around, I guess I’ll just keep using my current specialty plates.

Modern American conservatism could really be boiled down to 14 words. An entire political party flipped the fuck out when a black man was not only elected, but reelected to the presidency in a 4 year span. Such that it readily embraced a racist con-man whose entire sales pitch was “I’m going to beat up on all those minorities you hate.” And the uber-white near-coup at the beginning of this month, composed primarily of the affluent and connected, was the final nail in the coffin of any argument that Trump supporters are primarily working class white folks who are “economically anxious.”

Opinion piece by a public health expert and two economists.

Want Vaccines Fast? Suspend Intellectual Property Rights (New York Times, December 7, 2020)

Several World Trade Organisation member countries argued due to the emergency, intellectual property rights on the coronavirus vaccine should be suspended so poorer countries with manufacturing capability could make the vaccines in their countries.

About one hundred countries favoured the proposal from South Africa and India in October. WTO has one hundred sixty-two members. Since WTO rule changes require consensus, a small number of countries can thwart change (similar to the filibuster in the US Senate). Thus:

The idea was immediately opposed by the United States, the European Union, Britain, Norway, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, Australia and Brazil. It was opposed again at another meeting in November, and again last week.

The USA argued that protecting intellectual property rights is the best way to achieve swift delivery of the vaccine (never mind we can’t even do that in our own country). The United Kingdom argued it’s an extreme measure for an unproven problem, and the European Union argued there is no indication that intellectual property rights are a genuine barrier to delivery.

The funding to develop the three vaccines all came from public money in different nations.

Smog checks are required where we bought our car (Colorado, the first two years are exempt on a new car), but not required in Nebraska.

When our smog check sticker was expiring, I asked my wife if we should have it checked out anyway (since we get our car serviced at the Mercedes-Benz dealer in Denver), but she just shrugged “why? It costs money and we’re not required to have it at home.”

WTF??

Tacoma police car plows through crowd of pedestrians gathered at downtown street race (Tacoma News-Tribune, with video)

The video footage is clear, and hard to watch: a Tacoma Police patrol car running into and through a group of pedestrians.

The 48-second clip, shot shortly before 7 p.m., was shot in the downtown area. The patrol car, surrounded by groups of shouting people, revs its engine and suddenly surges forward, striking the group and running over at least one individual before driving on.

Mark, the eyewitness who shot the video and provided it to The News Tribune, saw five to six cars spinning in circles on South 9th Street between the intersections of Court A and Pacific Avenue.

A crowd of three dozen people were gathered around the intersection, cheering on the drivers, Mark said. Traffic through the area came to a standstill.

Mark, who asked that his last name not be used, said a fire truck first went through the intersection, temporarily putting a stop to the action. But the racers and crowd quickly reformed.

These were not protestors (though police should not be intentionally running over anyone).

The article describes the onlookers of the street race and doughnut-turning as pounding on the car’s windows, and the officer fearing for his safety.

The biggest issue with the idea of QA just falling apart is that it’s long since outgrown its dependence upon Trump. We see it in the crazed theories about Biden either secretly working with him or the even crazier ones that there’s been some sort of body switch. Others are buying into the whole BS about March being the site of “The Storm” because of the original inauguration date. And even others are just downright fed up with Trump and ready to toss him on the bonfire in favor of some other savior.

I don’t think QA is gonna fall apart, I strongly suspect they’ll end up turning into a Reich in search of a Fuhrer. That if they don’t choose a new figurehead, one will slot himself into the role if only to profit off of it all.

nothing more profane than waving a Confederate flag inside the US Capitol building: it is a great big “Fuck you, America!”

Or ripping down the US flag outside and hoisting a Trump flag.

These aren’t patriots; they’re insurrectionists.
They’re not American patriots; they’re patriots answerable to a foreign power.
They’re not American patriots; they’re confederate treasonweasels.

In California when a car is over 25 years (iirc) you no longer have to get a semi-annual smog check. Some fuck spun out on the freeway and killed my last car when it was 19 years old. My new car replacement is 13 years old now, 12 years to go.

Floridaman is threatening to create a third party to keep the Senate from convicting him, and backed fascist Kelli Ward for Az State GOP Chair. She narrowly won reelection. 60% of GOP voters still follow dear leader. Trump also has a $70 million warchest he plans to use to primary Republicans who didn’t support his election fraud lie. Floridaman must be indicted and incarcerated if convicted, because otherwise he will be the GOP nominee in 2024, and Congress will install him as dictator if the fascists control Congress. Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 24, 2021 • 7:54:45am

Someone won the PowerBall again, the draw after the big one.

Because all the white numbers were 28 and under, i.e., can be dates in a calendar month (people by nature will play their birth days and why not?)

The winner was not in California, but we did have no less than 7 five-white-ball winners… which is highly unusual (often weeks go by when there are no five-white-ball winners.)

And the irony is that these five-white-ball winners in California will only get $33k each, because in California the payout (other than the jackpot) are based on parimutuel betting.

Nationwide there were an amazing 35 five-white-ball winners. That has to be some sort of record. These winners in other states will get $1M (save for the seven who put in an extra buck for “power-play”, who will get $2M.)

This shows the nature of these lotteries and how people bet. It also explains why months can go by and there be no jackpot winner. If all the white balls are over 31 there likely will be no winners.

The a priori odds of getting five PowerBall white-balls in a draw is 1 in 11,688,054.

Imagine getting only $33,827 (pre-tax) for winning such a bet of $2.

This is one reason lottery sales are down. People not only enjoy the scratch-offs for the physical involvement and immediate evidence of winning, but there is not the negative feedback as in the lottery example I just outlined.

OT Yesterday when I went shopping at my local Acme my favorite cashier told me that they are no longer going to be using plastic bags. I just bought some cotton string bags for the purpose. I was going to use my old L L Bean tote bag but right now with COVID-19 the cashiers will not even touch it. At least they are washable whereas my old tote bag is spot clean only.

Normally, I would have lost my cool over this, but I suspect the club membership was brought into her late-in-life marriage by her husband, so not going to razz her. I’ll be curious to see how M-A-L drops off the West Palm social calendar, if only because it’s a pain in the ass to have a function at a location where an ex-president is living and everything has to be screened. To say nothing about the fact that the ex-president is (currently) a pariah, and by the time next winter rolls around, he may living “elsewhere.” *we can only hope*

Yes, that was 11. She was in Godzilla: King of Monsters and this is the sequel. As they state in the trailer, Godzilla is attacking people for some reason, even though he didn’t in the previous films, and they have to figure out why (if you’re watching, it’s just a way to get them to fight). My theory is the movie sets them up to have to work together to fight mecha-Gidorah.

re: #311 darthstar

I assume that includes Trump tower.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue is one of the few “Trump” properties that the Organization actually owns (or, more likely, is the front name on the mortgages), so probably not.
I think most of the rest of them bear the Name Of Shame due to various “licensing” agreements: it’s been my understanding that The Donald has, over the years, basically had to sell off most of his real properties to pay his debts, but had them keep his name on them for the “prestige” factor (his, not the building’s). And we see how that’s worked out.

I know the Trump Palace: it’s in my old neighborhood, and has one of the last Food Emporium supermarkets left in NYC. I may have recited this anecdote before, but I’m also familiar with the Trump Plaza on Third Ave and E 62nd St. The Mrs. and I once looked at an apartment in that building many years ago: it was OK, as apartments went, but looking at the financials, we noticed that the monthly maintenance charge was something like twice the money of any other co-op we had looked at, and the only explanation we could get from the RE agent was “Trump building….” And that the building was “owned” under a long-term (99-year?) land lease, which, despite the length of time involved, always affects the resale value. Needless to say, we passed.

I truly am tired of the argument that goes “it’s better to let them talk and then debunk them.” Why? Because any such reporting always begins with the lie first, and then the debunking after. And that assumes the debunking is willing to call out the lie, rather than twisting the truth to be “fair.”
