LYRICS:
Mississippi phone booth
In the middle of the night
Bugs flyin’ everywhere
Crazy in the gas station light

Heart pounding through my t-shirt
Pumping change in a call to you
Mississippi phone booth
Operator could you get me through

Flat black 84 Camaro
Run it up from New Orleans
Everything south of I-10
I just blew it all to smithereens

I’m somewhere close to Jackson
I need Memphis on the line
Mississippi phone booth
Tell Jesus I’m outta dimes

Quart of vodka eight ball cocaine
Not enough to change my mind
Mississippi phone booth
Please don’t hang up on me this time

I’m running straight outta time

This is the very reason why we must always be on guard regarding voting rights. It should be a very easy to vote. That is why mail-in ballots were such a success in PA (also COVID-19 had a lot to do with it).

Plus the shameless hypocrisy of conservatism when my state’s AG decided Nebraska tax money would be better spent on trying to overthrow your vote.

When asked about Nebraska’s mandatory mail voting in rural areas, he unabashedly stated that’s different because Nebraska runs fair elections.

Omaha World-Herald:

Florida to feds: Allow cruise ships to operate or we’ll sue

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ripped into the federal government’s continued pandemic ban on cruise ships using U.S. ports, threatening Friday to file a lawsuit if one of the state’s biggest tourism sectors is not allowed to resume operations soon.

Appearing at Port Canaveral with leaders from Carnival, Norwegian, Disney and Royal Caribbean cruise lines, DeSantis and Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody said they are exploring the state’s legal options if the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not allow U.S.-based cruising to resume by summer.

The state is the nation’s cruise capital with three of the world’s busiest ports: Miami, Port Canaveral near Kennedy Space Center, and Port Everglades near Fort Lauderdale. Millions typically cruise from Florida each year and the industry generates billions for the state’s economy.

Republican state senator John McCollister (the guy who called out the Nebraska Republican Party for a Nazi problem, and who the NGOP is trying to eject from their party for that statement), has introduced Legislative Bill 125.

LB 125 would provide ranked-choice voting in Nebraska.

Got an update from the Chester County Health Dept on Covid vaccination progress.

67,000 partially vaccinated.
72,000 full vaccinated.

County population of ~550,000.

They are receiving about 10,000-15,000 doses of vaccine to give out per week. So this, in addition to the vaccinations a number of pharmacies are giving out will hopefully help things improve a lot over the next month or so.

(I am hoping to get an appointment or have my name come up on the list sooner rather than later since I’d like to go attend a wedding ceremony in New Mexico in June.)

It’s Supreme Court season again, and our first one with our new 6-3 fascist conservative majority, so over here at Wonkette, we are … concerned about where this is going to go.

But guess what! Today we have actual good SCOTUS news! Because yesterday, in a case styled Torres v. Madrid, our Supreme Court managed to actually rule in favor of a person who was shot by the police.

The decision is a good one — and it sets an important precedent for the future, just by ruling something as simple as “shooting a person counts as seizing them.” (Yeah, the United States Supreme Court had somehow never really said that until now.)

TL; DR: Police shot a woman driving a car. She got away initially, but ended up being arrested after having to go to the hospital for the gun shot wounds. The cops tried to say shooting her didn’t count as a seizure, because she wasn’t so incapacitated that she had to stay at the scene. NOT AN UNREASONABLE RULING.

and

In July 2014, New Mexico State Police officers went to arrest someone at an apartment complex in Albuquerque. Neither Roxanne Torres nor the person she was with was the target of the arrest warrant, but the cops approached their car anyway, I guess for funsies.

Torres, who was going through withdrawal, didn’t notice that the people walking up to her were cops — she just saw people with guns trying to get into her car, thought she was being carjacked, and drove away.

Despite the fact that they knew she wasn’t the target of their arrest and she hadn’t committed any crimes in front of them, the cops decided that they should use deadly force, and shot 13 bullets at Torres, with two of them hitting her in the back. She eventually stole another car and drove to Grants, New Mexico. As Chief Justice John Roberts quipped in the opinion,

The good news for Torres was that the hospital in Grants was able to airlift her to another hospital where she could receive appropriate care. The bad news was that the hospital was back in Albuquerque, where the police arrested her the next day.

KEARNEY — As COVID-19 vaccines are administered and spring sports draw crowds again, Heather Beans is disheartened.

She tested positive for COVID-19 right after Christmas, but at the beginning of spring she’s still suffering from unexplained medical problems that began with COVID. That makes her a “long-haul” COVID-19 patient.

She’s discouraged. She’s impatient. She’s hurting. Next month, she will spend a week at National Jewish Health in Denver, a research facility that, among other things, treats COVID-19 patients from all over the world who have stubborn symptoms.

“I never thought I’d end up like this,” Beans, 44, said. “People need to be aware it can happen to anybody.”

It’ll be interesting to see if the owners follow suit. The MLBPA represents a fair number of Black players, so it stands to reason that they would have a strong stance on this issue. The owners are considerably less diverse - I think, to a man, they are rich white men, though I may be wrong - so the direction that the owner’s association and the MLB office themselves go will be telling.

Missouri Republicans block funds for voter-approved Medicaid expansion (Kansas City Star)

The vote went by party lines.

Democrats slammed the vote as an attempt to subvert Missourians’ wishes to implement the expansion, which several Republicans said was unpopular in their own districts.

Democrats plan to re-introduce the funds into the rest of the state budget on the House floor. Budget Chair Cody Smith, a Carthage Republican, said he will introduce another bill to spend the money elsewhere.

Regional news:

Business owners, entrepreneurs and advocates have formed the Cannabis Industry Association of South Dakota as the state prepares for legal marijuana.

Executive Director Ned Horsted said the association came together just before the start of the 2021 legislative session in January.

After voters approved Amendment A that legalizes recreational marijuana and Initiated Measure 26 that legalizes medicinal marijuana, Horsted said many people and businesses expressed interest in the cannabis industry.

“The purpose is to build a strong, vibrant industry in the state. We hope to continue to work with [the state government] and share industry best practices, what’s been learned in other states, and how to do it to benefit the people of South Dakota,” Horsted told the Journal.

Part of group’s initial work included lobbying in Pierre to prevent “damaging changes” to Initiated Measure 26. Beyond that, their mission is to create a well-regulated cannabis industry that is good for businesses.

Boise State Public Radio reports that Montana’s [Governor Gianforte] trapped and shot—in that order—a black wolf that had wandered outside the boundaries of Yellowstone Park. And not just any wolf. This was Wolf No. 1155. It was a 6-year-old adult male, born inside Yellowstone, who had been tracked by biologists for the last three years as part of the Wapiti Lake Pack. This was a wolf who was wearing a tracking collar.

Exactly how Gianforte trapped the wolf isn’t clear. What is clear is that he didn’t have a permit and didn’t take a required class on how to trap wolves ethically. The Washington Post reported that such violations can result in fines up to $500 and a permanent loss of hunting rights. But Gianforte is getting off for the low, low price of $0 and no consequences at all. He’s even being allowed to keep the wolf’s hide and skull. Because who wouldn’t want the skull of an animal he shot while it was writhing in a trap?

A group of House Democrats has introduced the “Delivering Envelopes Judiciously On-time Year-round Act.” Yes, the DEJOY Act, which is a crime against legislative nomenclature. But the lawmakers are serious, intent on blocking DeJoy from implementing the service changes he intends, including slowing delivery of first-class mail to as long as five days.

More conservative lawyers drawing sanctions:

MN lawyer sanctioned $10,000 for filing election challenges without plaintiffs’ knowledge (Twin Cities Pioneer Press)

‘To my horror, I saw that I had sued Steve Simon and Ilhan Omar,’ a plaintiff said.

A Minnesota attorney who filed legal challenges to the November election of five congressional Democrats was given a $10,000 sanction Friday after a judge found she “bamboozled” voters into signing on as plaintiffs without their knowledge or permission.

“Susan Shogren Smith … perpetrated a fraud against this court and, more importantly, perpetrated a fraud against these plaintiffs,” Ramsey County Chief District Judge Leonardo Castro said from the bench.

Shogren Smith is a member of the MN Election Integrity Team, a conservative group that sought to prevent the state from certifying its election results while President Donald Trump and his allies promoted unfounded claims of election fraud.

On Dec. 1, she filed five complaints in Ramsey County District Court, naming as defendants Secretary of State Steve Simon and the Democratic candidates who won their Congressional races.

Those legal challenges were filed in the names of 14 separate voters, at least four of whom had no idea they were participating.

The people who were named as plaintiffs and didn’t know it were removed from the case by the judge.

One problem with this proposed boycott is that many, if not most, white supremacist red states have introduced similar measures.
The criminal Repug cartel that runs Texas, for example, has introduced more than 20 bills aimed at restricting early voting. facebook.com

A boycott might end up being applied to a large percentage of the states, which does not seem workable, at least not at the national, as opposed to international, level. I could see foreign entertainers and sports figures applying such a boycott to 15 or 20 red states, though, and it might be a good thing.

As a reminder, Brian Kemp has always been a racist.

How a criminal investigation in Georgia set an ominous tone for African-American voters (Yahoo!, August 6, 2019)

The early-morning arrest began a multiyear nightmare for the mother of two. The state government, operating under the authority of a newly appointed secretary of state named Brian Kemp, arrested Dennard and 11 of her political allies and charged them with 120 separate felonies.

To [Nancy] Dennard and her allies, who became known as the Quitman 10+2, the reasons for their arrests were simple. They were black candidates who won an election in the Deep South, upsetting a white-dominated power structure.

“They thought they could make an example out of me, and that would kill the spirit of this movement,” said Dennard, who has a master’s degree in speech pathology, as well as an educational doctorate. “I knew we had done nothing wrong.”

Yet the mug shots taken at the jail that first day of African-Americans wearing orange jumpsuits would be an enduring image. The photos were plastered across newspaper front pages, broadcast repeatedly on local TV news and finally displayed on the screens of Fox News viewers as evidence of voter fraud.

At least some of them will, especially when combined with the doubts raised by the power grid fiasco. In both cases, deeply embedded aspects of the local political culture are involved. They will change eventually, but it is a slow process and many companies might postpone a move until they do.

There’s also the issue of employees wanting to move. Certain educated or skilled employees can’t simply be magicked out of Texas libertarianism. Employees also want things states provide like libraries and parks.

While former governor Rick Perry made a big deal out of trying to get California businesses to move, not many actually did. His attempt to get a Maryland gun manufacturer to move failed (the manufacturer said they could not replace their skilled workers in Texas, and none of their workers wanted to live in Texas).

Several southern states already have laws against feeding or giving money to homeless people. They have been upheld by courts.

When I was in Little Rock, I noted that they have a law against giving money to homeless people; they have little blue boxes for donations to a Christian charity which allegedly provides for homeless people (but being a Christian charity, you cannot get financial reports).

While I was there I made a point of giving money when asked directly. (Something something having been homeless myself once.) No one ticketed or arrested me, but I was prepared for it.

I saw that tweet by the Senate Republicans claiming they were heckled at the border today. What a *joke*. I’ve been practicing my Spanish and you’re supposed to do it by reading things you’re interested in. Well, for me, it’s narcotrafficking, cartels, and suchlike.

So far as I can tell, no non-US Spanish outlet even mentioned the senators’ trip to the border in reports today. Instead, it’s articles about the tentacles of various cartels into other countries, battles between cartels, confiscations of drug shipments, accusations of government collusion with cartels, murders, etc., etc.

For example, a week later, the murder of Carlos Martínez (leader of the Cartel Nueva Plaza) is still making news. That’s because his murderers, the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, kidnapped him, trotted him out and had him make a confession saying he was working with various government officials, including a high-up in the Mexican police hierarchy, one Omar Garcia Harfuch. The video was released on social media a week ago, and a few hours later, Martinez’s body was found on a park bench in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco state. Today, it appears that Jalisco state still hasn’t opened an investigation into the allegations in the video.

This is much more important than a bunch of GOP senators being stupid at the border.

(I also read a longish article today about the ownership of confiscated small planes in Mexico and Central America. The thing that got me about the article is that these aren’t cheap planes. The governments have come across multi-million dollar planes that have been abandoned in the jungle, where very skilled pilots have set them down on dirt roads and then walked away. The article said that the cartels are making so much money that they can afford to just dump planes like that. Astonishing.)

Except it’s not an income, it’s Basic Assistance. You get guaranteed housing in the form of shared rooms in gov’t housing, you get guaranteed food in the form of bland-tasting protein paste and enriched rice, you get guaranteed medical care in the form of minimal care at gov’t health clinics, and you get guaranteed clothing that’s made from recycled paper. There’s no guaranteed income at all.

Yeah, theoretically you won’t starve to death, freeze to death, or watch your body rot from a preventable disease. But you also have no real agency, you’ve no real future, and your only options besides the job lottery is either joining the UN Navy or getting a job as virtual slave working in The Belt.

Yeah, fuque those atheists. (And Hindus, and Buddhists, and pagans, and… .)

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A proposal in North Dakota to shield schools and teachers from lawsuits arising from posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms is unconstitutional and would spur costly and unwinnable legal fights, attorneys and education officials told state lawmakers Wednesday.

Despite the cautionary advice, the House Judiciary Committee gave the legislation an 11-3 “do-pass” recommendation, hoping that a requirement that the Ten Commandments be included in a display with other historical documents would fend off legal challenges. The full House will consider the bill later.

The Republican-led North Dakota Senate approved the measure 34-13 last month.

Attorneys and education officials said the bill likely violates the clause in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution that prohibits the establishment of religion by the government.

“Should the Legislature enact (the measure) it will likely precipitate costly litigation for which public school will be liable under federal law,” the American Civil Liberties Union said in written testimony.

One of those testifying against the bill was the state attorney general who fought in 1980 to keep such a law in place from the Twenties and lost. His position is it is discriminatory and the state will lose again.

Two people were killed and at least eight injured in Virginia Beach shooting incidents

Two people are dead and at least eight have been injured after multiple shootings near the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia, police said Saturday.

Police discovered at least eight shooting victims at “the original crime scene” near 20th Street and Atlantic Avenue when they arrived shortly after 11 p.m. Friday night, Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate told a press briefing.
While police were investigating the first crime scene, shots were fired about a block away near 20th Street and Pacific Avenue, resulting in “an individual being confronted by a uniform Virginia Beach police officer,” Neudigate said. The officer shot and killed the person in what the chief described as a “police intervention shooting.”
A second person was killed in a separate nearby shooting incident, Neudigate said. He said police were still trying to determine what happened but did not believe it was related to the first two shootings.

Jews don’t oppose the Ten Commandments, per se, we just think Christians don’t have them in quite the right order.

Also, Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t say the pledge of allegiance, salute the flag, or sing the national anthem. Because it’s just too close to a religious ritual, and thus an insult to God.

Poland reported a record daily rise in coronavirus infections for the third consecutive day on Friday, confirming 35,143 new cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country more than a year ago.

polskieradio.pl

The death toll increased by 443, according to public health authorities.

A total of 2,189,966 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Poland since the start of the pandemic, and 51,305 have died in connection with the COVID-19 respiratory disease so far, officials said on Friday.

Of the new cases confirmed on Friday, 5,264 were in the central region of Mazowieckie, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

Meanwhile, 5,095 new infections were reported in the southern coal mining region of Silesia.

The western province of Wielkopolskie, which is home to the major city of Poznań, had the third-highest number of new infections confirmed by officials on Friday, at 4,141.

The latest deaths in Poland’s coronavirus outbreak are 318 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 125 who died directly because of COVID-19, the Polish health ministry said.

Also from Radio Poland, UPDATE: New swathe of restrictions in Poland amid COVID record

Poland on Thursday announced a swathe of new COVID restrictions as officials reported another record daily rise in infections and the health minister warned the country was “in a crisis situation.”

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, meanwhile, said Poland was experiencing its most difficult moment in the pandemic, with over 70 percent of hospital beds with ventilators occupied.

He added that Poland’s public health service was approaching the limits of its capacity to cope.

Under new rules that will kick in for two weeks from Saturday, large retail outlets and churches will be able to admit fewer people, hairdressers and beauty parlours will be shut, while kindergartens will be closed to children apart from those of medics, soldiers, police and firefighters.

Large furniture and building supply stores will be closed, while sports facilities will be open only to professional athletes.

A proposal in North Dakota to shield schools and teachers from lawsuits arising from posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms is unconstitutional and would spur costly and unwinnable legal fights, attorneys and education officials told state lawmakers Wednesday.

I recall when this issue came up under the GW Bush administration. Some smartass journalist (probably one with a couple of semesters of Comparative Religion under his belt) asked the Prez which translation of the Ten Commandments should be used.

To which Bush replied “The standard one”.

He did not clarify what he meant by that, but I assume in his pea brain he meant the King James one with all the Thou-shalt-nots.

This is not about the concept of conservatorship, it is about a white trash pop celebrity.

In her case, this has been going on since 2008. Her father controls all her money.

She is extremely wealthy because of her music career. For those who do not have vast sums of money, it is impossible to get out from under conservatorship due to the lack of money to fight it out in court.

From the article:

One issue, Low said, is the lack of training and oversight of conservators who are not licensed professionals. Oftentimes, courts will appoint a family member to act on behalf of a person who is deemed to be no longer able to care for themselves. [Evan] Low’s [D-San Jose] Assembly Bill 1194 would require anyone appointed as a conservator who is not a licensed professional to receive 10 hours of training in financial abuse. Nonprofessional conservators, such as Spears’ father, would also be required to register with the state’s oversight agency, the Professional Fiduciaries Bureau. That oversight would only apply to estates valued at $1 million or more, with Low’s office saying that threshold will be added in upcoming bill amendments.

If a court finds that a conservator did not act in the best interest of a client, the fiduciaries bureau would be required to suspend or revoke the license or registration of that person and they could face a civil penalty of up to $50,000 payable to the estate of the conservatee.

We, naturally, become very focused on our own social ills.

But there has been big news elsewhere, that gets very under-reported in the US:

Protesters Warned They ‘Could Be Shot in the Head, Back’ as Over 60 Killed in Myanmar

Myanmar’s security forces shot and killed Saturday at least 64 protesters, including a young boy, news reports and witnesses said, a brutal crackdown on dissent that came as the leader of the ruling junta said the military will protect the people and strive for democracy.

Protesters against the February 1 military coup came out on the streets of Yangon, Mandalay and other towns, defying a warning that they could be shot “in the head and back”, while the country’s generals celebrated Armed Forces Day.

[…]

It’s the same old story of unelected men grabbing power, and using double-speak to defend themselves.

The generals in Myanmar will “strive for democracy” in the same vein as Georgia Republicans claim to be defending elections.

Two jokes about Adam and the rib

Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam’s ribs.

Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as if he was sick, and said. “Johnny what is the matter?”

Little Johnny responded, “I have a pain in my side. I think I’m going to have a wife.”

And

After a sermon on creation, a curious young boy asked, “Dad? How did we get here?”
“Remember God created EVERYTHING in six days. On the sixth day, he scooped up some dust and made Adam. He took one of Adam’s ribs and made Eve. They had kids and their kids had kids and so on, so that’s how we’re here.”
Not entirely convinced, he asked his mom the same question.
“It began with microorganisms you couldn’t see without a microscope. Over time they evolved—creating algae, fish, birds, tadpoles, for example. Eventually, who knows, but something—tadpoles or algae—-evolved into monkeys and apes and eventually humans!!”

Mom’s explanation seemed more logical so the boy approached his dad. “You lied to me! Mom told me about evolution.”

Dad responded, “no, Son. I didn’t lie. Your mother was just telling you about HER side of the family.”

SO even after all the supporting information (basically everything everybody else has uncovered), Trump is still blathering away about the Russian influence on his 2016 campaign STILL being a “hoax”, and/or an “FBI vendetta”? And still harping on the “Durham Report” that even his toady Bill Barr didn’t want to close up and release?

Go back to the golf course, Donald: stop fucking wasting our time…

(Though I was somewhat surprised to find that (at least as of February) John Durham is still “on duty” as Special ProsecutorCounsel . Not sure what he’s doing with his time, but he is still alive….)

That’s almost certainly what happened….yet again. For some reason, load modeling is, quite inexplicably, never tested. Then when the system goes live, it crashes almost immediately.

Because for the most of the GOP, the only racism is anti-white racism promoted by the “woke” and BLM. Not only don’t they believe that there is any problem with white supremacism, they rail against the attempt to purge the military of white supremacists, claiming that it’s an assault against those who don’t share the lefts’ progressive values.

OT — at the end of last night’s sermon, our rabbi discussed the continuing debacle of Israel’s effort to elect a stable government. He suggested we could discuss that around our dinner tables, as a diversion from our politics. The anti-Netanyahu coalition consists of groups that disagree on every issue except one: getting rid of Netanyahu. Israel has certainly demonstrated the potential instability of parliamentary systems, when the legislature is fragmented across multiple parties and there isn’t a single dominant party or one with a couple reliable partners that holds a majority of the vote.

That’s the problem when the threshold for proportional representation is set too low.

If the threshold was raised to 5% that would knock out most of the fringe parties.

re: #160 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I recall when this issue came up under the GW Bush administration. Some smartass journalist (probably one with a couple of semesters of Comparative Religion under his belt) asked the Prez which translation of the Ten Commandments should be used.

To which Bush replied “The standard one”.

He did not clarify what he meant by that, but I assume in his pea brain he meant the King James one with all the Thou-shalt-nots.

I’m sure you’re aware that Catholics and Protestants number the Ten Commandments differently. Actually, now that I’ve gone to look, I see that the Wikipedia article has eight different numberings, with no Protestant numberings included.

en.wikipedia.org

I’m sure the local religious freedom orgs will be shopping around for plaintiffs for the inevitable lawsuit.

I honestly wish there’d be a discussion about “thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thy neighbor’s wife, or anything of thy neighbor’s” and note how it puts women into the class of chattel property. Uhm, we’re not property, folks, and I don’t care how you interpret your holy book, you can just take that interpretation, fold it up and shove it where the sun don’t shine.
