Can someone point me to a good resource or explainer as to why Biden has not eliminated Trumps tariffs yet?

re: #1 Eclectic Cyborg

Because there are still serious IP and other issues that have to be addressed, and the tariffs are meant as leverage. It’s not a satisfying response, but 3 months into his admin, they’re still trying to get their own policy choices in place. That takes time.

Also, I’m guessing, because tariffs raise money for the G, and Joe is probably less-interested in cutting back that revenue stream unless there is a good reason for it (I.e., one that can be politically leveraged to the positive)

MSNBC anchors fact-checked Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) after his rebuttal speech following President Joe Biden’s first address to Congress.

“I do think it’s going to be hard for most people who are paying any attention to politics to swallow the Republican[s] support making it easier to vote line and the long passage he had about how Democrats are the ones blocking police reform,” MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow noted. “There’s some stuff there that may make sense in a sliver of Republican world, but in the news world, I don’t think will ring.”

This is a speech delivered from a planet where facts don’t matter, which is where the current Republican Party resides, so it’s not really his fault, but it is his responsibility to get his facts straight,” Wallace said.

And ps…totally his fault for either writing it or agreeing to read it

Hard to blow a wish on a dandelion when you’re wearing a mask.
(and it’s so sweet that her mask is from the same fabric as the dress. Are stores selling them that way these days? Or did she have her own seamstress make the dress? Or maybe her daughter?)

No expert on RCC lines-of-authority, but isn’t (formal, legal) “excommunication” above the pay-grade of your average bishop?
I mean, they can (and usually do) bitch away endlessly about abortion, but isn’t the power to actually toss someone out of the Church reserved to the Pope? Or some other body well up the Vatican chain-of-command??

Excommunication is different from receiving communion. Technically, a Catholic shouldn’t be receiving communion if they have sinned and not confessed.* So the idea is that the bishops/priests would refuse him communion because of his “sin” of publicly supporting reproductive rights. Of course, most American Catholics support reproductive rights, despite what the (celibate) clergy says.

*It’s been a long time since I’ve considered myself Catholic, and an even longer time since my CCD classes, so I don’t know if that’s still the rule, but I’m pretty sure it used to be the rule.

Trump pitches media and tech conglomerate that he values at $15 billion. Mind you, that this is all vaporware.

Totally fucking believable given that Trump pitched everything from football teams to casinos and failed at pretty much all of it. He’d offer media with a Trump+ and other “brands”, with tech offerings and even provide its own cloud services to compete with Amazon’s AWS (stop LAUGHING!).

Rich Lowry: “In 2009, President Barack Obama created a spontaneous, hugely influential conservative grassroots movement on the basis of an $800 billion stimulus bill and a health care plan estimated to cost less than a trillion. In 2021, Biden is proposing to spend about $6 trillion in his first three big bills, and he can barely create more interest than the debate on wearing masks outdoors.”

“The conventional wisdom was that after the free-spending Trump years, Republicans would snap back to being deficit hawks when out of power. There’s been some of that, but the relatively muted reaction to Biden’s almost incomprehensible spending ambitions is testament to the fact that, no, Republicans simply aren’t as interested in fiscal issues anymore.

- The bottom line: While this particular proposal seems dead in the water, it offers a glimpse into the sorts of business endeavors being presented to Trump…

Looking at the San Diego county vaccine dashboard, where until just a few days ago the count of vaccines on hand yet to be administered hovered around 100k or so the past few weeks, that amount today has skyrocketed wo 270k. So either the county got an unusually huge delivery this week, or the uptake among the young has indeed slowed.

The community response has been so overwhelming that staff at the Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, which is handling all of the toys and books from the city’s 12 drop-off sites, said they’re having a hard time keeping up with the donations.

All of those Catholic bishops march lockstep with the GOP because of the Cult Of The Fetus shit.

I find it entirely ironic that the same religious rightwingers in 1960 were aghast that the Roman Catholic Church would unduly influence JFK’s policy-making are now saying the church should be forcing President Biden’s decisions.

Underwater Photos Taken During Blackwater Dives Frame the Atlantic Ocean’s Stunning Diversity
thisiscolossal.com

After sunset, self-taught photographer Steven Kovacs plunges into the open ocean around Palm Beach to shoot the minuscule, unassuming creatures floating in the depths. He’s spent the last eight years on blackwater dives about 730 feet off the eastern coast of Florida in a process that “entails drifting near the surface at night from 0 to 100 feet over very deep water.” Often framing species rarely seen by humans, Kovac shoots the larval fish against the dark backdrop in a way that highlights the most striking aspects of their bodies, including wispy, translucent fins, iridescent features, and bulbous eyes.

Amazing photos!

re: #103 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Without the pause more women might have died.

Early on in this ongoing fustercluck I saw a quote on the internet by someone who claimed to be an epidemiologist. “Epidemics are statistics.”

Enough credible reports of sinus thrombosis due to blood clotting soon after administration of the J&J and AstraZeneca vaccines triggered alerts in many countries and at that point the statisticians revved up their modelling engines and got to work. Until they came back with good numbers the vaccines were under suspicion and they still are now the odds of this side-effect are known and can be attributed to the vaccine’s administration. Maybe.

I’ve still not seen any kind of explanation why either of these two vaccines would cause this rare but significant (in the statistical sense) effect. If there is a biological or biochemical cause that can be ascribed to the thrombosis cases and it can be avoided by drugs or selection of vaccine recipients or whatever, great but I’ve still not read anything definitive by anyone on the subject, just a lot of speculation on the internet which is, well, speculation on the internet. I expect a lot of Great Minds are working on this issue right now though.

it’s incoming that matters
outgoing could matter but not the same imminent health hazard way

if you actually knew your incoming was contaminated then you probably put filters in long ago.
problem solved

if you didnt do anything, then yeah, you’re an idiot.
and if you werent an idiot then, it’s a lead pipe cinch you may have become one over time.

of course upgrading the pipes in your house is probably meaningless unless/until it’s coordinated with the muni water servicing your house (if those old mains are lead too).

again filters if you can’t remove lead from the entire incoming stream.

I don’t think they can until the vaccines move beyond the emergency approval. You can’t force something that hasn’t been fully tested and approved onto people. They have to be smart enough to assess the risks and make the right choice on their own until the approval process completes.

re: #196 Colère Tueur de Lapin

My goal is no more than two days a week in the office — per month; who knows if I’ll get there.

Starting at the end of May or early June, I am planning on coming back to the office for 2 or 3 days every week. Probably starting off with 2 days to see how it goes and how much it helps. That is actually mostly for my own sanity; last summer, with the kids home full-time and me working from home full-time, was absolutely brutal on my mental health.

re: #184 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

I’m really unknowledgeable about these things. What kind of charges would DHS handle?

I suspect it may be involvement with trafficking something.

Nice. Before the pandemic we’d started working from home two days a week, but I think we may be able to get more at home time afterward. We were extremely lucky that IT built the infrastructure for that less than a year before the pandemic. We suffered no work interruption at all.

Yeah, we’re looking at not renewing our office lease when it expires next year and shifting to work from home for all. It won’t work for all businesses, but can work for many.

I’d hate to be in commercial real estate now.

They mentioned possibly selling the building and downsizing in my meeting as well. It would be a shame. There’s a patio at the back with a view of a lake.

Probably much worse.

Customs is part of DHS.

Wild speculation: Duggar may have imported underage (hence the risk of not letting him out on bail) porn.

Probably less speculative: Duggar was involved with business of trafficked drugs across the border.

My office has been working on turning everything we do electronic for a while now. We had no work interruption, either. There is no need for us to be in an office other than because managers.

What are the chances that Duggar was a mule for Maxwell?

That would make quite the documentary. TLC could double dip into money making with the Duggars, when TLC decides to finally do documentaries.

The City of London corporation which is responsible for the footprint of a remarkable amount of very expensive offices and buildings in the Square Mile (i.e. central London) is looking to convert some of the office spaces into residential properties.

Awesome news.
