There’s a lot to listen to in this perfect little pop gem, like the 80s-style Toto-flavored synth pads, but I’m there for the sick tasty fills John Mayer inserts at exactly the right points. It may sound simple, but it ain’t.

Lyrics:

If you wanna roll me, then you gotta roll me all night long
And if you wanna use me, then you gotta use me til I’m gone
I’m not a fallen angel, I just fell behind
I’m out of luck and I’m out of time
If you don’t wanna love me, let me go
I’m runnin for the last train
I’m runnin for the last train home

If you wanna know me, then you gotta know me through and through
And if you’re gonna hurt me, then you gotta hold me next to you
No matter how you work it, things go wrong
I put my heart where it don’t belong
So if you’re comin with me let me know
Maybe you’re the last train
Maybe you’re the last train home

I’m on the last train runnin
I’m on the last train runnin
And I surrender
And I surrender

This is why I haven’t watched local TV news in Los Angeles ever since the 2003 recall when stenographers endlessly slobbered over Ah-nold’s ass. Even Oprah got into the Ah-Nold Asskissing shtick. They’re kissing Jenner’s ass the same way but this time we’re not going to let them recall Newsom.

Was that the Gray Davis recall? Gray Davis, admittedly, was not a bright spot in California history. I’m not saying that The Governator was all that good - from all accounts, he was a mixed blessing at best - but outsider’s perspective, was he better than Gray, unequivocally yes.

NO!!!!!!!!!!

Ah-Nold was the most incompetent asshole ever put in the Governor’s chair. He let Enron off the hook and let the red ink flow like the dam was broke. Ah-Nold called a special election to break teacher and nurses unions and failed. He also pushed school vouchers and was stopped.

He left California in such a mess that it took Jerry Brown six years to get the state finances stabilized.

Still don’t like assertions such as in that tweet.

Hispanic is not a “racial” group. Even though race is a social construct, “Hispanic” is a culture. Most of the people from Spanish speaking families in North America and the Caribbean have a very complex ancestry, with ancestors from Native Americans, Europe, and African-sourced slaves.

No, you’re right - I didn’t suffer through his reign as Governator, nor did I have to deal with Jesse Fucking Ventura as Governor of Minnesota (I hear tell that he did rather a better job than Ahhhhnold did, though that may be the sources I heard the information from - wingnuts, the lot of them). I did say that it was an outsider’s perspective, and that shows how important it is that federal and state governments not pass laws overriding control from the governments beneath them. You never really know what it’s like on the ground, and lawmakers need to respect that and delegate as much control as possible to the people who are actually there and are affected by the laws they’re trying to pass.

9th Appeals will have fun with that decision. The initial description of the AR platform is straight from a manufacturing associations writings (cough) NRA (cough) and that alone will probably cause a three judge panel to nuke it from orbit.

The problem will be the current make up of the SCOTGQP and that level of appeal.

Yay, CoCoCo!

The East Bay’s Alameda and Contra Costa counties are in the top 20 highest vaccination rates nationwide among all counties with over 250,000 residents. Both have given at least one vaccine dose over 75% of residents 12+ and have fully vaccinated over 60%. Alameda County has vaccinated over 1 million people. Vaccination rates have slowed after a peak in mid-April. President Biden aims to have 70% of adults in the US get at least one dose by July 4. While many Bay Area counties have already reached that goal overall, vaccination rates are uneven across communities and counties. Solano County’s first-dose vaccination rate is 64%.

Haven’t posted this in a few years. With anti-socialist bullshit at epidemic levels, this might be a good time for a re-post.

Churchill, on guard against Socialism:
It was 1946 and the new Labour government had started nationalizing many of the major industries in Britain, coal, electricity, the railroads, etc.

Churchill, then the opposition leader, went into the parliamentary men’s room and found the Labour Prime Minister, Clement Atlee, relieving himself at one end of the long trough-type urinal. Churchill took up a position at the opposite end, a good ten feet away, and proceeded to do the same. Atlee said, “What’s wrong, Winston, feeling unsociable today?”
Churchill responded, “No, Clem, it’s just that every time you see something big, you try to nationalize it.”

Potato cannon. Lots of these on YouTube.

Potato cannon firing

Spud gun legality.

The ATF has previously examined potato guns or spud guns as devices using potatoes as projectiles and used solely for recreational purposes, do not meet the criteria of a destructive device defined by the National Firearms Act, or the Gun Control Act. They have however classified said guns as destructive devices when they used incendiary tennis balls(!).

According to the NFA and GCA previously mentioned, it must be muzzle loaded, not rifled, or use any projectile which is intended to be used as a weapon. Any device using compressed air would be completely exempt from both.

Huh. Didn’t even know there was a new TV series on that one. I do however recall the absolute gore-fest was the late 1980s War of the Worlds program. That was pretty violent for its era - easily on par with R-rated films of the ’80s, especially the first season. They were seriously pushing the envelope of what you could get away with on television.

So many efforts to go over the same material.

The one I remember was a now mostly-forgotten syndicated series that ran from 1988 to 1990 and had a total revamp between the first and second seasons, said revamp effectively killing the show.

The first season had some practical VFX gore that wasn’t too far away from Rob Bottin’s work on The Thing. That might’ve been one of the reasons for the revamp - as I recall, that show was getting tons of complaints about graphic violence.

Yep. The premise was nuts - a better premise would’ve been something like after the defeat of their main invasion force, the Mortaxians switched to an infiltration or guerilla warfare strategy, playing the long game to ultimately conquer Earth. That aside, the first season was actually pretty good, but then they changed it beyond all recognition during a hiatus and when it came back, the show just didn’t work.

Good morning!

I did breakfast potatoes for my family this morning to celebrate the kids’ first day of summer vacation. We had small potatoes, I quartered those, heated up last night’s bacon grease that was still in the pan, fried them for about 25-30 minutes, patted them dry and applied Lowry’s seasoned salt. For the kids, I used a glass to cut a hole in a piece of bread, then dropped the bread and the hole into the hot grease with an egg and some salt and pepper to make “egg in the middle of bread”, as they call it - one of their favorite breakfast treats.

I could understand a Belgium citizen targeting those responsible for Belgium’s appalling response to the coronavirus. For a long time it had the worst death rate among European nations. It’s now been surpassed by several nations that were in the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence (e.g. Czechia, Hungary) or in the former Yugoslavia.

I wouldn’t call it good, but I like B-grade Sci-fi, so I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed much of Earth Final Conflict, and even First Wave. I did not know about the new series.

Back in 1965 I was 9, my mom would take us to a beach in Alameda, on San Francisco Bay. While my mom suntanned we played in the water. My friend and I would catch small (2-3’) dogfish (?) sharks by the tails and throw them back out to deeper water. If my mom had known what we were doing….*

*She grew up in land-locked Manitoba for 28 years then moved to the US in 1960. Not sure she would have thought sharks were OK for her 9 Y.O. son to play with.

My mom said she and her little sister used to go out and peg rattlesnakes with rocks, out on the Montana homestead in the 1930’s. They never told my worrywart grandmother about that, either.

About ten(?) years ago I attended a party; two of the other guests were a woman and her son who was on the spectrum. She attributed his problems to living near cellphone towers. So these fears have been around for a very long time, totally unconnected to current RW lunacy. Her son did eventually get his doctorate in math and is now a successful professor, but he initially faced obstacles in being admitted to a PhD program because of his awkward social skills.

When a Confederate state turns blue, it can abandon its traditional racist allegiance. Unfortunately, too many states out there, including those never in the Confederacy, have retained or adopted a fondness for the “Lost Cause” and the traitors who served it.

Delusional? Maybe like Hitler was delusional. Most Arizona Republican officials support these delusions, as do all those who are trying to relitigate the election or who are promoting the notion that it was stolen. All those passing voter suppression laws are part of this same groupthink. This is not delusion; this is an attempt to destroy our democracy, and it seems to be gaining adherents across the nation, among Republican officeholders.

Major Kyrsten Sinema Supporter Says Abolish Filibuster Or Get Out Of The Senate (Huffington Post)

Former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods, who prominently backed Kyrsten Sinema’s election to the Senate, is now saying she doesn’t belong in office anymore unless she helps abolish the filibuster.

Woods, a former Republican, was attorney general from from 1991-1999 and worked for the late Sen. John McCain (R). In 2018, he switched parties and became a Democrat.

That year, he also endorsed Sinema, and the campaign even featured him in one of its ads saying, “We need more people who are not just politicians who will say or do anything to get elected.”

But on Friday, Woods was much less enthusiastic about Sinema in comments to HuffPost. He said he feels very strongly about passage of H.R. 1 ― Democrats’ For the People Act, a democracy reform and voting rights bill ― and believes the Senate must abolish the filibuster, which is something Sinema has said she is adamantly against. (Sinema is, however, a co-sponsor of the For the People Act.)

“I do think that Sen. Sinema and every senator should support ending the filibuster for the voting rights bill,” he said, adding, “To keep the Jim Crow filibuster while losing some of these basic voting rights that are central to our democracy is preposterous.”

“Sen. Sinema should know that, so should Sen. Manchin,” Woods said, referring to West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin, who also opposes removing the filibuster. “At the end of the day, I’m very hopeful that they’ll come around and do the right thing. But if they don’t, then I don’t think they belong in the Senate anymore.”

The last paragraph of that article, with my inserted comments here.

This situation deserves our attention, our prayers and our voices to be heard. We must appeal to God and government to end the Black Lives Matter movement.

God is allegedly omnipotent. If he is real as you think he is, he doesn’t need your help to “end” BLM.

It is imperative we find legitimately peaceful ways to resolve the unrest in our nation.

Like storming the Capitol?

America doesn’t need to be fundamentally transformed into a communist society to dispense equality and justice. We simply need to reestablish truth, hold fast to biblical values, repent and return to our first love.

My first love left me and made me homeless because she thought I was possessed by demons. Stuff your book. Which Biblical (I’m an atheist and I know that word is capitalised) values do you wish to hold fast to? Rape? Genocide? The many many ways marriage is depicted? The rules for slavery? How to conduct an abortion?

It was a very different pandemic. Yes, the US was a different place back then, but conclusions are being drawn out of broad strokes with little data. I say that because Mr. w remembers the polio pandemic and has pointed out some differences. Polio was water-borne [as noted in the thread.] Public pools were all closed. When someone was contagious, an obvious notice went on their front door. The victims were more often children. Photos of rooms full of iron lungs with people in them were in the papers. A simplistic comparison is condemning the present.

We had KCET here in Los Angeles who wound up selling their studios to the ¢hur¢h of $¢ientology. Lots of people whose relatives left endowments to KCET were pissed off when KCET left PBS and filed lawsuits when they sold out to L. Ron’s Assholes.

The story about the Memorial Day speech being canceled was posted here, while ago?

Veterans group official resigns over censored Memorial Day speech that highlighted Black history

The head of an American Legion post in Ohio stepped down after he cut a veteran’s microphone during a speech Monday referencing how Black people organized the earliest Memorial Day commemoration on record, according to the veterans group.

Jim Garrison resigned after he was asked by Legion officials, the American Legion Department of Ohio said in a statement Friday. The veterans group said Garrison and Cindy Suchan, chair of the Memorial Day parade committee and president of the Hudson American Legion Auxiliary, decided to “censor” retired Army Lt. Col. Barnard Kemter in a “premeditated” move. Kemter shared his Memorial Day speech in advance with Suchan, who asked him to remove a part of his speech, and he didn’t, according to the department.

And in today’s episode of STUPID TREK!

Carey Jon Walden of Kansas City was arrested today in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot, but only after an FBI interview that resembled a middle-schooler getting questioned by his teacher about a field trip.

Walden, identified by the FBI as an ex-Marine, was identified with the help of a tip to the bureau’s online portal and a photo he had posted on his Facebook page. But what made this accused rioter stand out from the rest was his unusually forthcoming discussion with the FBI.

What was truly extraordinary was the FBI description of his response to being interviewed by an agent. The highlight was Walton’s claim to have “fist-bumped and devil-horned” a friendly swat line.

The very next verse makes it clear that Paul’s exhortation was intended for “lazy busybodies”, not intended as a countermand to literally every single lesson Jesus taught. But what am I saying - these people make their living by selecting Bible verses or parts of verses, twisting them grossly out of context, then shaming people who dare to challenge them by throwing their sins in their face.

Dick’s Sporting Goods will stop selling guns at 440 more stores

New York (CNN Business)Dick’s Sporting Goods will stop selling guns at 440 additional stores this year, escalating the company’s methodical elimination of firearms from its stores.

The move follows a series of decisions at Dick’s to scale back gun sales. A few days after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting in February 2018, the company announced it would stop selling semi-automatic weapons like the one used in the event.
A few months later, Dick’s pulled firearms and hunting accessories from 10 stores as a test. That went well: Overall sales increased at those stores. The company then pulled guns and ammunition from 125 additional stores in March 2019.

Now Dick’s plans to nearly quadruple the number of stores without guns, the company announced during its fourth-quarter earnings report Tuesday.

Dick’s (DKS) CEO Edward Stack told analysts in March 2019 that the company would treat gun control “as a multi-year initiative,” and that he expected to remove guns from more stores in 2020. The company has been conducting a strategic review of its hunting business since the Parkland shooting.

Dick’s is the largest US sporting goods retailer, with 827 stores across the country. Walmart (WMT) remains the world’s largest gun retailer.

The company reported $2.6 billion in net sales for the fourth quarter, up by 4.7% year over year. Its stock jumped by 13% after the announcement.

Having more than a passing interest in true crime, I’ve noted a few things.

Mormons do some incredibly insane crimes. I mean I’m surprised there isn’t a true crime podcast that just covers LDS crimes.

And, Canadian serial killers and murderers are just over the fucking top insane.

I have a few theories about why both of these are what they are.
