IT’S GOHMERT! Louie Asks if the Forest Service Can Change the Orbits of the Sun and Moon

Politics • Views: 19,454

In today’s episode of the long-running inadvertent comedy, Representative Louie Gohmert (R-TX) comes up with a great idea to address climate change: just change the orbit of the moon. Or the sun. Or both. NASA told him about it. That sounds like something the Forest Service should be able to do, right?

MP4 Video

Maybe Louie should also reach out to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for her opinion. She seems very smart.

it is kind of funny that Faux continues to play this angle that they provide the framing under the assumption that she must fill in their portrait, on their terms, as if they are some kind of final arbiter of arbiters.

How can Faux risk their reporters lives under these crisis conditions with zombie-like hordes of people fleeing death-squads and economic wastelands in hopes of better life and to do so at the expense of a few Right Wing reporters… why it’s They Were Expendable, Part 2!

Dark money groups tied to Donald Trump’s inner circle and backed by people who have spread baseless claims about the 2020 presidential election appear to be playing a key role in funding an unprecedented review of 2.1m ballots in Arizona,” The Guardian reports.

“Republicans in the Arizona state senate, which authorized the inquiry, allocated $150,000 in state funds to pay for it - just a fraction of the projected overall cost, which is still unknown… Instead, the effort is being paid for by private donors, who remain hidden from the public.”

to recap: A partisan state senate has arranged for a partisan, unaccredited contractor paid for by partisan donations to conduct a review of ballots for one targeted county where these particular partisans lost the election…

CV-19 really makes no sense as a bioweapon, even if you’re generous and say that it was meant to hinder/cripple an economy by overloading its health care system. Because as a weapon designed to cause mass death and devastation, it has fallen way short of the mark. You’d have better luck with anthrax or smallpox than you would CV.

A participant in the bioweapon attack if that was the case, since he lied rather than respond to it. There’s no scenario where Trump comes out as a good guy. You have to start from that conclusion, and abandon reason to get there from here.

Mission accomplished. The Trump cult abandoned reason years ago.

The Trumpists don’t care, they are just throwing out talking points to deflect from Trump’s terrible Covid response.

Police blotter from the next valley over.

Thieves cut a hole in the storeroom wall of the Louis Vuitton store in downtown Aspen on Saturday and stole as much as $500,000 worth of merchandise, police said Tuesday.

One man and one woman along with two vehicles were caught on surveillance video, though there could have been more thieves and more vehicles involved in the brazen burglary, said Sgt. Rick Magnuson, head of the investigative unit at the Aspen Police Department.

“We do have surveillance of some subjects and vehicles,” he said. “We think they stole between $400,000 and $500,000 … of shoes, accessories and clothing.”

The thieves were inside the store, located at 205 S. Mill St., for about an hour, Magnuson said.

The incident occurred between 8:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. after the thieves entered an unlocked hallway at the back of the store and cut a hole in the drywall to gain access to the storeroom, Magnuson said. They used an unspecified cutting tool to open a small hole just large enough for one person to enter, he said.

I found this interesting.

While no other stores were targeted Saturday, Aspen’s large collection of high-end retail outlets in the downtown core are infrequent targets for thieves.

Two masked men wearing all black clothing unsuccessfully tried to pry open a side door to the Louis Vuitton store in October 2019, before heading over to Meridian Jewelers at 525 E. Cooper Ave. The two men then used a pry bar to open the door to the jewelry store and stole 12 Rolex watches valued at more than $60,000 before fleeing in a late model black SUV.

The alarm at Meridian was triggered at the time, though the men were only inside for a brief period before taking off, Magnuson said at the time. The two men have not been caught.

One of the most brazen robberies in recent memory occurred Dec. 21, 2018, when three men — later identified at natives of Chile — pried open a jewelry display case in the lobby of The Little Nell hotel in the middle of the day and made off with more than $400,000 worth of diamond and gold rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. Despite identifying the men by name and indicting them on felony charges, the men have never been caught.

A crew of thieves stole about $100,000 worth of jewelry from a downtown Aspen store in September 2017 after distracting a saleswoman, while another crew lifted a $95,000 silver sable fur coat from a boutique inside The Little Nell in 2016.

My FiL called my MiL Emma, Patty. See when she was working at the Pentagon during WWII she met this sailor from Alabama and didn’t quite trust him, especially with that deep south honey drawl. So she gave him a fake name and told the girls at the boarding house so that if she decided to ditch him they could say that there wasn’t a Patty there.

He called her that till the day he died.

From the article:

The practice is not explicitly dictated anywhere in Orthodox law. It grew out of the Talmudic injunction that men must “guard [their] eyes” against immodest and potentially arousing images — a directive designed to prevent any sort of seminal emission not intended for procreation, including masturbation, which is a matter of grave concern in Orthodox law. Countless rules — including those dictating the dress and behavior of women — have been justified in the name of safeguarding men against this supposed infraction.

it’s not about “images”.

It’s that men are weak and fragile creatures who cannot endure even the possibility of images inciting feelings that they’d have to exercise self-control to cope with. They shouldn’t be tempted by the existence of images of women.

No, Victorians Didn’t Cover Up Table Legs Because They Were Too ‘Sexy’

Perhaps you’ve heard this one before: In the Victorian era, upper-crust society members were so cartoonishly prudish that it was considered proper to cover up the legs of tables or pianos, for fear of bare “legs” of any kind being too evocative.

you can’t identify it by looking - there are no markings on it.
and if you ask alexa, believe it or not she doesnt know what she is.
and she wont be helpful turning off sidewalk either, quelle surprise.

anyway with a bit of googling and matching up pictures, it turns out we have a Tap. Which is old enough it doesnt support sidewalk, so we’re clear.

i told you that to tell you this:

from that one google, all my pop up ads are now for amazon echos, dots, etc.
so now i got that going for me.

oh, and someone here brought up the company Staber a while back. i think in reference to a stove or refrigerator - i cant remember. anyway I had to google them to find out what it was all about.

but now, Staber industries has been trying sell me fire station drying cabinets and racks for months now. To keep my gear safe, well maintained, and toxin-free.

targeted advertising isn’t. at least in my little world it aint.

I’m a Virginian and I approve. (Of Minnesota’s answer)

re: #76 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

Ummmmm, no. We took it fair and square. There’s even precedent for us keeping it.

Minnesota has a Confederate symbol — and it is going to keep it

Virginia has asked for return of the flag for more than 100 years — and each time Minnesota has refused to return the hard-won symbol of victory. A president demanded return of Confederate flags, Congress passed a resolution ordering return of the flags, Virginians even threatened suit to get their flag back. And the answer has been the same: No.

I’m too sexy for this chair,
Too sexy for this chair,
So sexy I don’t care.

Musing on the use of the phrase “Honey”:

In Pittsburgh and Baltimore, particularly back in the 1960’s [I don’t remember much from the 1950’s], older waitresses in more downscale neighborhood style restaurants and bars used to call patrons ‘Hon’ (from Honey). I always presumed the phrase had Appalachian roots.

Now the phrase has been adopted by certain segments of Baltimore as an identity.

Pittsburgh Slang:

Hun or Hon Honey. Used at local Pittsburgh eat spots by “more mature” women with silver blue hair in a beehive. (Submitted by Paul G. Wiegman, Allison Park)

pittsburghese.com

Although nowadays the city is culturally diverse, the lasting image of Baltimoreans seems to be the “Hon” culture exemplified most markedly by the longer established families and residents of the Highlandtown, Irvington, Canton, Locust Point, Hampden and Pigtown neighborhoods. Between the 1950s and 1970s, it was common to see local working class women dressing in bright, printed dresses with glasses and beehive hairdos. Men were often dressed casually, but with a general factory or dock worker look, as many in town did indeed have such jobs.

en.wikipedia.org

And then, of course, there is the Bobby Goldsboro song “Honey”

BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) - A Boone County judge has ruled that Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s COVID restrictions violate state law.

The case began last summer and involved several local businesses, most notably the Beans Cafes in Grant County and Hebron. The case went all the way to the Kentucky Supreme Court.

The general assembly then passed new laws limiting a governor’s emergency powers, forcing a new trial in the case. Boone County Circuit Court Judge Rick Brueggeman ruled late Tuesday that the legislature had the authority to limit such orders to 30 days.

Despite winning the case, Beans Cafe lawyer Chris Wiest says it’ll probably still drag on.

Charlie Pierce: How Can Merrick Garland Function as an Institutionalist Leading a Corrupted Institution?
The previous management at the Department of Justice has left the current attorney general with a serious tightrope to walk. esquire.com

… In this case, the law is as much of an ass as is the accused, and that’s saying something. How this differs from Bill Clinton’s denial of his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, and that denial was enough to get him impeached and disbarred, is beyond me. I don’t recall Janet Reno’s arguing that Clinton’s denials were expressed in the course of his official duties even though, at that point, the prosecutorial pursuit of Clinton was strongly political. But the deeper question is how Garland can function as an institutionalist leading an institution that was utterly corrupted by its previous boss, and by its previous boss’ boss. It is reminiscent of how the Catholic Church has persisted in certain misbegotten policies because one pope didn’t want to admit that a previous pope was wrong. …

There’s a place to put books you think others might like in our little Condo post office. So a couple of weeks ago I picked up Ron Chernow’s Washington. It’s a bit repetitive about what a cutting figure George presented and how he overwhelmed others with his studied equanimity. But Chernow brings out also his vanity and especially Washington as the model of the slave-owner trap. He wanted to get rid of them, but he couldn’t figure out how to do it without Mount Vernon turning to ruin. Chernow also does a good job of not giving Washington the benefit of the doubt. He brings up numerous examples of Washington giving lip service to manumission while trading in slaves either by accepting slaves as payment from debtors or trying to settle debts by sending enslaved people. While there’s a single chapter devoted to the topic, the issue of slavery, enslaved people, free Blacks, participation in the war by Black soldiers, etc….

I guess what I’m getting at is…what exactly was the Trump 1776 Project trying to get at if it meant to expunge Black involvement in the Revolution and its core issue after independence? I mean, I know the answer: they were happy to have clothes and food for the most part and it was peripheral to main focus of valiant white Americans
breaking free of tyranny.

But you can’t teach that without using primary school texts.

They see what Black people have been subjected to in this country for hundreds of years, what Jews endured (mostly not in this country) for thousands of years, and they want in on that. They want something to whine about, so they appropriate the suffering of people they were the ones oppressing.

And the answer has been the same: No.

sharpe got his eagle, and it ain’t going back!

re: #95 Dangerman

losing side asks for all their land, rights, and culture they lost to be returned

this is the issue the palestinians need to figure out. you start a war and lose land, the opposition can tell you to go blow sand when you want it back.

Well, for my part, I also loathe him because he is a Republican, the party of greed, violence, deceit, and treason.

Gohmert was being a jerk but, as was explained elsewhere, he wasn’t suggesting that anyone can change the earth’s orbit but only that climate change is not due to human activity — especially not fossil fuels, but rather due to solar flares, the earth’s orbit, and the moon’s orbit — so that there is nothing we can do about it, so we can continue on our merry way of putting carbon into the atmosphere and keeping the Texas oil industry running at full capacity.
