Josh Marshall:

Here’s a must read story from Josh Kovensky about how Tom Cotton is insisting that China be denied the 2022 Winter Olympics because he says the PRC will use the Olympics to harvest the DNA of the world’s greatest athletes and then use this genetic treasure trove to create a genetically modified race of Chinese super soldiers to dominate the world. I’m not exaggerating or kidding. That’s what he’s saying. Read it here.

[…]

…it’s worth noting that China has well over a billion people. Some of them must ran fast or have dead on hand eye coordination. It’s not hard to pick up the idea here that China needs to steal the genetic patrimony of the West to create its super soldiers. Dumb, inane, racist - in other words, your typical idea from Tom Cotton.

Not to mention that the future of warfare will be robots/ai; even genetically engineered humans won’t be able to compete.

Cleo and I had a breakthrough today.

We had a repair guy come over to give us an estimate. Cleo went into her usual meltdown/evildemondevildog mode when my husband walked out to talk to the guy. I mean almost going through the French doors to the back deck. So, I got next to her, started petting her head and softly telling her it would be ok. She calmed down in about 30 seconds did a sit and then laid down, stopped barking and laid there watching The Husband talk to the guy outside. Cleo looooves The Husband. It’s ridiculous. But she listened to me and calmed the actual fuck down. If you could see her when anyone knocks on the door, or walks by the house even, she loses her complete shit. All of it. To open the door we have to get her into the hallway and shut the door so she doesn’t scare the fuck out of people. 90 lbs of batshit GSD is intimidating. So this was progress. I’ll take all I can get.

Keeping us safe from joggers and dog walkers, this is her main perch in the house.

I’ve thought of riding BART to get to some paths around the bay. They allow bikes on the trains. When we get some cooler weather (101.5F at almost 7 PM) I’m going to cross the Carquinez Strait on the Martinez/Benicia bridge. Eventually I’ll branch out further to GGB, San Jose and other bay cities that have some interesting bike paths. Next year I intend to expand to off-road as I increase my skills. My first off-road excursion ended up catapulting me over the handlebars as the bike cartwheeled behind me.

re: #13 A Mom Anon

I feel for you. I have a shelter rescue husky+something? mix. He is very apprehensive around new people but eventually accepts them when he decides they’re not a serial killer. Other dogs, however, are a completely different story. If he’s within about 50 yards of another dog, he loses his mind completely. He SCREAMS. Not just a yelp, but a continuing air-raid siren of blood-curdling terror. If I were to douse him in gasoline and set him alight he would not make a more intense and horrifying sound than he does when he sees another dog. I am very surprised that nobody has ever called the cops on me when I take him for a walk and he happens across someone else walking their dog on the other side of the street. If you heard it you would certainly assume a dog is being tortured to death. I have no idea how to solve this problem. What I need is an understanding person with a very calm dog, neither of whom will return my dog’s out-freakage, so I can get him de-sensitized. But the universe seems to have no intention of providing this to me.

He’s pretty smart and learned all the basic obedience stuff without a lot of work. When it’s just him and me around the house, he’s the sweetest little creature. But as soon as we go out into the Big Bad World, all bets are off.

re: #26 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

I always seem to pick dogs with socialization problems. My last dog before Cleo had a similar deal with dogs, but for awhile she had a boy Doberman friend she could boss around and he adored her.He died of cancer, my dog died about two years later from the same thing. But Cleo has never been around other dogs except at the animal shelter where I found her. She loses her shit and I would be scared of having to stop a dog fight. I’ve had to do that in the past(not with Cleo)and it isn’t any fun at all. So I am not sure how to even begin. She turned two in March, so she’s not a puppy anymore, she’s strong as hell. How do you ask someone to let their dog try to make friends with your pet rabid werewolf?

My dog thinks every person is his long lost best friend who he’s never met before and deserves kisses in excess.

The craziest thing is that when we go to the vet’s office my dog can be around any number of other dogs and he doesn’t seem to mind. But at home? End of the world every time.

I would much rather have that problem. Except 90 lbs of kissy face snuggle wolf could result in minor injury.

Cleo’s account at the vet is flagged, lol. She goes in and out a side door so as not to freak out other critters and humans. She’s actually pretty good with all the staff and docs, but another dog and she turns into a maniac.

Yes, my Border collie/chocolate lab is 90 lbs. He likes waking me up in the morning and pet me like I pet him. He smacks at me with his paws and his nails make little purple bruises where he pets me.

That’s my girl Shelby. Everyone is her long lost best friend she just hasn’t met yet.
When other dogs snap at her she’s not sure how to play that game, but she’ll try to participate. She keep trying to make friends with the neighborhood cats. And has even booped noses with one a couple times. But, then she gets all excited and starts bouncing and scares the cat away.
The only person she has ever raised her hackles at was a guy riding a bicycle back and forth down the street while drinking a forty, when I had her out around midnight like 10 years ago.
The next morning a number of cars had their windows smashed.
So, apparently she’s a good judge of character
