Dead Kennedys accurately predicted 2020s America in 1985.

Dead Kennedys - This Could Be Anywhere

Cold concrete apartments
Rise up from wet black asphalt
Below them a few carcasses
Of the long gone age of privacy

It takes a scary kind of illness
To design a place like this for pay
Downtown’s an endless generic mall
Of video games and fast food chains

One by one
The little houses are bricked up and condemned
A subtle hint to move
Before the rats move in

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Those new kids at school seem cool
But dad says not to talk to them
Stick to your old friends
They’re not our kind
So now there’s lots of fights

So many people I know
Come of age tense and bitter-eyed
Can’t create so they just destroy
C’mon!
Let’s set someone’s dog on fire

Empty plastic
Culture slum suburbia
Is a war zone now
Sprouting the kinds of gangs
We thought we’d left behind

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Kids at school are taking sides
Along color and uniform lines
My dad’s gone and bought a gun
He says he’s fed up
With crime in this town

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere
This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Anywhere
Everywhere

I hope I’m gone before it explodes

I linger late at night
Waiting for the bus
No amount of neon jazz
Could hide the oozing vibes of death

My dad’s a vigilante now
He’s bringing home these weird-ass friends
Like the guy who fires blanks at his TV
When Kojak’s on

Or the guy who shows off his submachine gun
To his sixteen-year-old daughter’s friends
Whose sense of pride and hope
Is being in the police reserve

This could be anywhere
This could be everywhere

Everywhere

Jello Biafra was in a band with Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker from Ministry, they were called LARD.

One of their songs is on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, this one:

Forkboy

The very first song on their very first record, I would say, is LARD’s pièce de résistance.

Speaking of Hong Kong, Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s main pro-democracy newspaper has been raided by the Hong Kong police according to the terms of the “National Security Law” that was recently imposed on Hong Kong by the PRC. The editor-in-chief, and the CEO of it’s publisher were taken away. The founder, Jimmy Lai, had been taken away for being in an “illegal protest” a few days earlier, a Tianenmen Square vigil.

Edit: This looks like this happened yesterday, so you’ve probably seen this already.

I have been thinking about the second amendment more, and I think it’s time we shifted towards the “well regulated” part some more. Not only should we make the NRA safety guidelines law, but put yearly training requirements on each weapon based on how deadly they are. And I really do mean each weapon. One AR15: 50 hours a year. Two: 100 hours. And make instructors responsible for their training.

Among the wasteland known as television there is a genre that is particularly mindless: gameshows.

Most require almost no skill. Jeopardy! is one of the few that presses the intellect, and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire also because a hard quiz show in the upper money echelon.

Setting aside the few shows like that, which are based on academic knowledge or cultural trivia, most game shows just requre the contestant to be loud and flashy in front of a camera.

One game show of the latter type is Press Your Luck. I never watched the original (it was a bit after my time.)

But ABC brought it back in 2019 with more glitz (and Elizabeth Banks), and it is now in the third season.

Tonight’s episode 4 is interesting, though. It really stands out for a very long shot when it comes to outcome of the game. Banks was throwing around “legendary” a bit too loosely (it is, after all, a game show). Still the entire game had improbable results. In its long history (including the original), something happened that never happened before.

So, yes, mindless, but I found it entertaining.

Note how clunky and stupid China’s statement is. They actually called Central and Eastern Europe “former Warsaw Pact”, just outright calling them Russia’s property.

Apparently the mid-level diplomats know this wolf warrior shit is laughable and counterproductive, but it’s all about impressing the boss. The more dumb and aggressive it is, the more the big bosses like it, so it just escalates. Xi actually had to tell the government publicly to tamp it down a couple of weeks ago, but it’s not as simple as that, and it doesn’t mean they’ve stopped threatening their neighbors.

It is not enough to disagree with their policies. They have to be minions of The Dark Lord.

They also have to deny those who are Christians, such as Joe Biden.

Metaxas is a conservative, therefore he is a liar.

His own New Testament (which he believes is the literal word of God) has things to say on lying about other believers, for example:

I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.—Romans 16:17-18

I don’t have an automatic negative reaction to overtly religious displays, just when they are clearly part of a political agenda that is out to exclude or discriminate against certain groups.

My Catholic upbringing and overexposure to Campus Crusade for Christ (and Mormon missionary) asshats in college (ASU) left me with a very bad taste for Christianity in general.

It was not until much later in life that I met some Christians who quietly and unassumingly live their faith in a positive way.

Not enough to convert me, but enough that I began to see that something like that was possible.

Counter-apologist Rick Snedeker weighs in on Johns Hopkins University Medicine, pioneers of gender reassignment surgery in 1966, restarting the procedure.

Their Catholic chief psychiatrist declared transgenderism to be a mental disorder, and prohibited them from performing any gender reassignment surgeries in 1979.

Although he left in 2001, Johns Hopkins has only just restarted the procedure in 2007.

The Christian apologetics site First Things describes Dr. Paul McHugh as “one of the adornments of American Catholicism.”

McHugh is now ninety years old, but still participates as a professor emeritus. It was his opposition based on the Christian prinicple of “natual law” which kept Johns Hopkins from performing such surgeries for six years after he left.

McHugh also occasionally writes op-eds in the Wall Street Journal opining on the evils of gender reassignment surgery or transgender people.

(A reminder that donations to the Catholic Church fund this bigotry.)

re: #82 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Because seemingly all of Christianity focuses in on one singular passage with respect to women: (actually two, but I’ll correct myself)

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the Body, His Church, of which He is the Savior. Now as the Church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Ephesians 5:22-24 (NIV, 1984 edition)

The problem is, they miss the context. Verse 21 says, “Submit to one another [all believers, to each other] out of reverence for Christ.” Meaning, in essence, “submit” is used to reference giving respect and deference, not just doing what you’re told - because in no way does the apostle Paul ever advocate that believers should dictate to each other what to do. In fact, he continually teaches that believers should respect each other’s beliefs, but not argue about them. And of course, in verse 25, Paul goes on to say, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church” - the model of submission is that of reverence and respect, not a dictatorship. But of course, the patriarchal Christian society doesn’t want to hear that, they just want a Biblical excuse to lord it over their wives and beat them when they misbehave.

* Footnote: The other passage I referenced is in 1 Corinthians, and it basically tells women to shut up in church gatherings. This is also commonly used to oppose women being pastors. This one has more of a historical context; Paul was basically wanting the church to maintain order instead of having people (mainly women, apparently) gossiping and having idle chitchat when they are supposed to be communing with the Lord.

Now, having typed all that out, I don my asbestos scale lizard suit and await the flames…

We’re supposed to get about half an inch on Sunday. We are DESPERATELY dry and could use a LOT more than that, but right now, we’ll take what we can get.

My biggest issue with all of the Bible is this:

If there was a god, and that god had an important message for its creation which is vital for its salvation, you’d think that god would be sufficiently knowledgeable about what it created to make an entirely unambiguous message, which could not possibly be misinterpreted. (Whew, what a sentence.)

Instead we have a myriad of interpretations, many of which conflict with each other, and all of which claim to be the only truth.

That doesn’t seem to me to be a very good way to impart a vital message, leaving it up to people to interpret. They can’t all be correct interpretations, but they can all be wrong.

Congressman Reveals True Terror Of Republicans Now Downplaying Capitol Riot

Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego said many GOP lawmakers now “treating Capitol Police like s**t” were frightened during the insurrection.

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) has called out Republicans who are now downplaying the riot at the U.S. Capitol earlier this year, recalling the fear his GOP colleagues felt as a mob of Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the building.

“It’s true some GOP members of Congress who are treating Capitol Police like shit were the most scared on the floor,” Gallego tweeted Thursday, appearing to reference the 21 House Republicans who this week voted against honoring police who responded to the violence with a Congressional Gold Medal.

We love our Jeopardy, and we had a friend who was on the show and I have a relative who was also on the show with Trebek. It’s one of the few shows we watch with regularity.

The mrs and I have a certain fondness for a reality/gameshow mashup Wipeout. We loved the original hosts, but the new hosts of Nicole Byers and John Cena are pretty funny in their own way. They get a bunch of people willing to risk life and limb on a set of tasks.

re: #32 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

So, yes, mindless, but I found it entertaining.

thank merv griffin for creating both the zenith and nadir of game shows skills - jeopardy and wheel of fortune

ok, so you can try to make an argument that legislation should pass with some bipartisan support.

if a bill has no support from the minority, then you must ask the question why.

- is it because it’s heavily partisan, not publicly popular or in some other way politically odious?

- or is it that the minority has publicly stated that they will not support any legislation the majority puts forward and that their goal is to obstruct everything no matter what it is.

Why Republicans Could Never Tell Their Voters the Truth About Obamacare
If the suit was so absurd that liberals deserve ridicule for thinking it stood any chance of success even in a right-wing court, what does it tell us that Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch voted for the plaintiffs? For that matter, what are we to make of the fact that the Trump administration’s Justice Department, joined by the attorneys general for 20 states, signed on to this laughably flimsy case?
The answer is that the passage of Obamacare was a traumatic event for Republicans. The wound it opened in the party’s psyche has not fully healed, and even more than a decade after its passage into law, they cannot reconcile themselves to its legitimacy.
The passage of Obamacare, even though it merely incrementally expanded an existing program (Medicaid) and copied a program designed by a Republican governor (Mitt Romney) was met by unmitigated hysteria on the right. What seemed to unhinge conservatives was less the substance of the bill than the very idea of Democrats using their control of government to … govern.

The pattern of the anti-Obamacare crusade has continued to define the Republican party elite’s relationship with its base. First, they make a practical decision on the basis of self-interest, then convince their voters the cause is existential, then discover they have no choice but to act as if their own lies are true. So it was with repealing Obamacare, and so it is with supporting Donald Trump. More than a decade after the law was passed, the party still has not freed itself from its own lies. When you calculate how long Trump will own them, ponder that.

It’s sad that it took goons trying to end democracy to show that goons should not be in charge of law enforcement.

We had this odd notion that “more police officers = more protection against criminals” when the equation is much more complex than that

LOL

“If there was a god, and that god had an important message for its creation which is vital for its salvation, you’d think that god would be sufficiently knowledgeable about what it created to make an entirely unambiguous message, which could not possibly be misinterpreted.”

He did. “You can eat from anything in the garden, but don’t eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” We fucked around. We found out.

All of the other interpretations are Satanic, to confuse you. However, for a mere 10% of your income, I will preach the one true interpretation to you each Sunday!

I have heard (but not experienced, because I’ve never been to Europe) that European Protestants call US Evangelicalism’s attachment to inerrancy “the American heresy.”

That said, it’s enormously frustrating for someone like me who wants to take a more holistic look at say, the first Christian document we have, which is believed to be the first letter to the Thessalonians by Paul, Barnabas and Silas. (Yeah, it says Paul on the title, but this was before Paul broke up the band to go out on his own solo tour…ok stop with the analogies.) 1 Thessalonians is a short book, not as short as the letters attributed to John, but no 1 Corinthians or Romans. I have looked at commentaries, which are hundreds of pages long and which basically go into every jot and tittle, but they rip the text out of its context.

Things commentary writers don’t talk about (behind the button because nobody wants to read even a short rant of mine):

So, so, so many questions, I’m keeping track of them in a notebook because it annoys me so very greatly that these questions are simply breezed over. But I will tell you this—if 1 Thessalonians was your only written document—you’d be hard pressed to know exactly what Paul, Silas and Barnabas were teaching beyond that there’s a God and Jesus is his son. Oh, and that the obsession with sex started *early* (1 Thessalonians 4:3ff)-where the writer(s) go on about keeping one’s body pure but HEY what about cheating people? Not a whiff.

Mail was just delivered here. I asked the mail carrier about the new national holiday. She said many government offices were closed today, but they were still delivering. She said that by next year delivery probably wouldn’t happen on the holiday. Guess it was just too short notice for the mail carriers to have the day off.

The Federal Reserve is processing transactions today but the Fed itself is mostly shut down. Presumably the only people on are those needed to watch the lines and make sure everything goes through. Apparently Juneteenth is going to be celebrated on the nearest Friday or Monday to the actual day. So this year, on June 18, next year on June 20 (a Monday). We (bank employees) have not heard how they’re going to handle Juneteenth, but if the Fed is going to shut down, then it will probably be a regular holiday for us. If the Fed remains up, it’s a regular work day and we get a floating holiday.

Personally, I’d be much happier if Election Day had been made a holiday.

We were told that OPM issued directives that Juneteenth is treated like every other Federal holiday. If the actual day falls on a Saturday then Friday is when the holiday is observed. If the actual day falls on a Sunday then Monday is when the holiday is observed.

Now we need a holiday between President’s Day in February and Memorial Day in May. Tom Jefferson’s birthday is April 13th. Would be nice to make that a holiday.

As for Election Day, why not move it to Veteran’s Day in November?

I signed up my brother for Arizona’s version of Medicare (funded by Obamacare legislation) five days after Trump became president, while he was barfing uncontrollably in the ER. (Turned out he is diabetic.) Of course, the hospital wants money, and the finance person, after getting a credit card to pay for this and learning he was employed as my mother’s unpaid caretaker, asked me if I wanted to sign him up for AHCCCS. Of course I signed him up. He was only briefly mad about it, until they rolled him into the ICU because his blood sugar was off the map bad.

Considering how many times he was in the hospital over the next few years, that was a stroke of serendipity on my part, otherwise he would have been smothered to death in thousands upon thousands of dollars in bills.

re: #241 JOE 🥓

We were told that OPM issued directives that Juneteenth is treated like every other Federal holiday. If the actual day falls on a Saturday then Friday is when the holiday is observed. If the actual day falls on a Sunday then Monday is when the holiday is observed.

Now we need a holiday between President’s Day in February and Memorial Day in May. Tom Jefferson’s birthday is April 13th. Would be nice to make that a holiday.

As for Election Day, why not move it to Veteran’s Day in November?

I have no problem making Jefferson’s birthday a holiday, but it will never happen because twitter will start screaming “He owned slaves!” “Sally Hemmings!” etc.

Wait until Juneteenth falls on the same day as Father’s Day. I can’t wait for all the “War on Father’s Day” takes.

It happens! I was born on Father’s Day / Juneteenth in 1960. It was quite the coincidence, since I was my father’s first child. And then, 54 years later, my dad died on my birthday after a long life (he was 80). We were very close, even though we drove each other crazy, so it seemed more than coincidental that he died that day. On that same day, his younger brother’s much delayed memorial service took place in Colorado.

César Chávez Day is a U.S. federal commemorative holiday, proclaimed by President Barack Obama in 2014. The holiday celebrates the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist César Chávez on March 31 every year.

Maybe just make it a regular federal holiday.

moral truths are permanent.

like the moral principle that blacks and women are inferior to white males

conservatives uphold voluntary community, but oppose involuntary collectivism

but opposing labor or consumer unions as “collectivist”

freedom and property are closely linked.

yes, those who own enough property can get away with a lot more then those who own little or none. Property is taxed at a much lower rate than income.

That’s what we get by pinning some holidays to day of week rather than the date.

Germans are fond of that: Good Friday and Easter Monday, Pentecost Monday, Ascension (a Thursday, so most folks take the Friday off and make a long weekend out of it) and Christi (likewise always a Thursday)

For that, if another fixed-date holiday like May 1st or Christmas falls on a weekend, tough luck.

Y’all.

I realize I’m going at this real hard, but..this thing with presenting Trump as subbing to Putin is not a good look because it’s just the liberal version of nationalism, and nationalism is not only generally horseshit, but specifically the horseshit that gets the USA into trouble over and over.

Like, of course a bunch of American reactionaries defer to Putin…he’s the localized strain of American kleptocracy and authoritarianism, run rampant in a country with no immune system. You literally have the line of attribution backwards…Putin is doing what white American dudes used to do everywhere—steal shit and kill people because they’re inconvenient; blur nation, faith, and personal gain into a slurry—while using identical justifications give or take a few search/replace terms. Trump has no filter and a more basic, primal love of cruelty, but he’s not an exception within his time or across time.

I hammer on this because it’s worse than “these guys love a foreign dictator”…you’re doing that thing where you imagine that the problem is some kind of alien influence, and it’s the exact opposite: the people that used to destroy other places and people have realized that, yeah, they actually can shit where they eat. The cannibals are no longer willing to commute for a meal, and the perverts have realized that your suffering is actually more tangibly delectable than the suffering of some random brown person around the Equator.

And Putin is just another case of the short term money coming back to fuck us. Kind of like China…the “Communist” country we offshored all of our production to because, putatively, that would result in capitalism and therefore democracy, but instead resulted in a bigger authoritarian state playing with ethnic nationalism and the obliteration of manufacturing (but also helped murder retail).

I talk about this over and over because there’s no influence to purge, and the status quo has always involved somebody getting screwed over…it just wasn’t local. Now it’s local…the Dracula Factory finally got the paperwork in and can sell off its own floor rather than package all models for export.

I have no problem making Jefferson’s birthday a holiday, but it will never happen because twitter will start screaming “He owned slaves!” “Sally Hemmings!” etc.

And I have absolutely ZERO problem with that. Jefferson may have been brilliant, but a good chunk of that brilliance was bought through the sweat, labor and abuse of enslaved persons. Jefferson never freed his own children by Sally Hemings, the four children who survived to adulthood basically ran away, were not pursued, and emancipated themselves. One of the sons, Eston Hemings (later Jefferson) moved first to Ohio, and then, after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, to Wisconsin, to be further away from slave catchers.

So, no, let’s not honor the guy who couldn’t even legally emancipate his own children. Nope.

This is a national disgrace.

The US is one of relatively few countries that allow non-citizens to join their armed forces. It is a very old tradition in the US military and has never NOT been policy. A few years ago, I happened to mention to a wingnut I knew (a non-veteran ammosexual) that there were many non-citizens in the US armed forces. He was enraged: “WHEN THE HELL DID OBAMA START ALLOWING THAT?” he demanded. I patiently explained that every President since George Washington has “allowed” it. He was skeptical. I said, “Ok, even if you don’t jack about real history, you have surely seen some John Ford movies. All those Irish sergeants are stock characters for a reason.”
