It’s been two days since a botched detonation of illegal fireworks ended in an explosion that ripped a Los Angeles Police Department bomb truck apart and injured 17 people in South Los Angeles, but investigators said they still did not know what went wrong.

I would be looking at the people in charge of the truck.

We will have to see how this latest so-called ransomware attack across lots of companies will eventually play out, but just maybe C-suite executives who are so gung-ho about moving to the cloud will start to re-think things.

Sorry, dudes, but the Internet that everybody uses today is forever broke, becuase security was never part of its design - worse, it’s foundation is almost either Unix/Linux or Windows which makes it even worse as sizeable monocultures are inherently bad in nature

Maybe it’s time to download and compile Multics as hackers would probably have never seen PL/1 code….

Hell, maybe it’s time to bring back SNA while were at it…

Lizards calling it a night. Got a lot of yard work done this morning before the heat set in, but even after a nap, I am still beat. Picked up some more supplies up this afternoon for the R.V. project from a vendor that made the promise of curbside delivery a fucking joke. Lowes #2597, you really need to learn WTF that actually means. See you all in the morning, probably before the sun even comes up again here in the Mystical Mountain Time Zone. Off to a nice hot (yeah, I know) shower and then off to be bed. Sleep well, and may the Goddess smile down upon you and yours.

The cabin my parents visit every year has an eagle’s nest in a tree just over the hill. When we were outside around the campfire, we heard the babies screaming bloody murder for their dinner, and the mom was just chilling on a branch a few feet away, like, “I am SO DONE with you right now.”

I got cut loose after 90 minutes, and they figured out that no, they didn’t need five availability techs and managers for a not super-obvious issue that’s likely affecting nobody on a holiday weekend. So now I’m catching up on the news.

I see that North Miami Beach has closed down a 1972 condo building tonight.

I read the associated news article and it looks like the HOA had been dicking around for NINE years on getting their 40 year recertification. The report was completed in January but not turned over to the city until very recently. A review prompted the evacuation.

One of my friends told me that after the Northridge (CA) quake, her late husband was an apartment manager who had to post a condemnation notice on the front door of his building. But the building was unsafe. He obtained a crossbow and arrow so the notice could be affixed to the building in accordance with the law and he didn’t have to be near the building.

My guess is that if the Champlain Towers South building had not collapsed, the North Miami Beach condo would not have been evacuated; instead they would have eventually hired contractors to perform the necessary repairs. There would not have been the sudden urgency to take immediate action, especially given they didn’t think it was urgent back in January when the report was completed.

Lesson that I keep relearning the hard way: NEVER tell your coworkers that you have any skill with electronic devices, because you will immediately become the office IT guy. And that leads them to believe that you have skill in all fields dealing with electronics and software, such that whenever the less-tech savvy people run into a problem, they’ll just shrug their shoulders and declare “Let’s ask to look at this, he knows this stuff!”

Radars shown are UK Met office, France, The Netherlands (for the Lesser Antilles), Suriname, Colombia, Costa Rica, Belize, Cuba, Cayman Islands, Key West, and Miami.

Hurricane Elsa is looking somewhat ragged, as the central column is being tilted due to high steering winds. Those are expected to weaken, and the hurricane is expected to intensify tomorrow.

Probably, particularly Cuba’s mountains. The National Hurricane Center holds it as a tropical storm as it moves through the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Currently though I don’t have any admin passwords so 99% of the time I can shrug my shoulders and point at the 800 number :D

To shut down a good Dual CPU 88k Unix server running Xterminals to replace them with Windows XP, now that was a step backwards in terms of capability and stability.

I suspect that many Florida buildings can be condemned, if local officials were really interested in safety.

Even in states where the state government isn’t so easily bought off, the real estate business is dubious.

And in Florida, which is where people go if they want to live a fantasy in the tropics (without really going to the tropics), real estate is the business of just putting on a pretty face. Damn any real issues, just so long as you can sell the sun and lack of snow, people from the cold north flock there.

It’s the perfect place for Trump and his marks (of which there are many in Florida.) Just ignore real issues and pretend everything is fine.

But everything is not fine.

However, when you’ve got such a large population who know they are just 10 or 20 years from the grave, why should they care about 40 or 60 years into the future?

Florida is poster-boy for eat-drink-and-be-merry-for-tomorrow-we-die.

Our wifi doesn’t play nice with Apple. I get unhappy guests over that regularly. They have to turn off all the auto connect stuff Apple sets up to automagically hook into the nearest Apple made hot spot. But now they’ve even got a separate help desk number for the guests so I palm as much as possible - especially on overnights - on them as possible.

Hell, I wish that was the worst of our problems. I swear I could chisel ones and zeroes into stone faster that the new wifi set-up we got saddled with as part of the switch-over to a new owner. But that’s probably because the new owner is a chain of hotels whose business model would have RyanAir green with envy in its determination to squeeze as much blood from a stone as possible.

Yesterday when the Geldingadalir volcano went quiet, and the cauldron was empty, after the huge eruptions the prior 6 hours, people were asking if the volcano was ending its life.

It’s not done yet.

Past five hours has seen a pretty strong outflow of laval.

This was the scene about five hours ago:

As a bunch of lava was flowing into South Meradalir valley, it eventually will flow over the edge and down into Natthagi valley, and sure enough the view in the that valley a couple of hours ago:

Many people have been long anticipating lava overflowing Natthagi and running over the major road and into the sea, but I think that is a long way off, if it ever happens.

A lot of the lava has been heading northeast, but there are no livecams there. Meradalir valley is full of lava that is spilling out eastward into another glacial valley, but that is inland. But it is too remote for most hikers.

In the end it seems like this volcano’s main purpose now is to drive vacationers to Iceland. Even with the pandemic, there is a tourist boom.

If you’re still on Faceborg, and also on Google Play, you might want to consider changing your Faceplant password (or just close you account).

Apps with 5.8 million Google Play downloads stole users’ Facebook passwords (Ars Technica, today)

Google has given the boot to nine Android apps downloaded more than 5.8 million times from the company’s Play marketplace after researchers said these apps used a sneaky way to steal users’ Facebook login credentials.

In a bid to win users’ trust and lower their guard, the apps provided fully functioning services for photo editing and framing, exercise and training, horoscopes, and removal of junk files from Android devices, according to a post published by security firm Dr. Web. All of the identified apps offered users an option to disable in-app ads by logging into their Facebook accounts. Users who chose the option saw a genuine Facebook login form containing fields for entering usernames and passwords.

Then, as Dr. Web researchers wrote:

These trojans used a special mechanism to trick their victims. After receiving the necessary settings from one of the C&C servers upon launch, they loaded the legitimate Facebook web page facebook.com into WebView. Next, they loaded JavaScript received from the C&C server into the same WebView. This script was directly used to hijack the entered login credentials. After that, this JavaScript, using the methods provided through the JavascriptInterface annotation, passed stolen login and password to the trojan applications, which then transferred the data to the attackers’ C&C server. After the victim logged into their account, the trojans also stole cookies from the current authorization session. Those cookies were also sent to cybercriminals.

Ah, that would be my previous hotel. It was a local family owned place the first 2 years I was there and Scrooge McDuck was a spendthrift compared to them. The pool plumbing was a nightmare (I had the pressure gauge blow off the filter system in the middle of the night and had the pool drain into the maintenance room ) and the laundry drier was a bailing wired together (almost literally) contraption that broke down monthly so they’d have to dry the sheets and towels uptown at the coin laundromat. There were other things but you get the picture. It got sold to a different family who were willing to invest in the place but they were right wing fundamentalist who where pushing for Trump. I got away as soon as I could.

This place is a Holiday Inn Express and IHG has fairly strict rules so that helps.

“All of the identified apps offered users an option to disable in-app ads by logging into their Facebook accounts.”

…and thought “How could you not find this suspicious?!”.

Then it struck me - so many sites have a “Log in with Facebook” feature, that people have become accustomed to entering their Facebook credential all over the place. Now that Facebook is a pseudo-SSO for so many people, defending against this sort of attack is probably impossible without giving up that functionality. How is any end-user supposed to detect that their credentials are being intercepted in this scenario?

I do not buy ethanol gas; it is not recommended for my car.

Court strikes Trump EPA rule for full-year 15% ethanol sales (Omaha World-Herald)

This rule change was a sop to agribusinesses which grow corn for gasahol.

DES MOINES — A federal appeals court on Friday threw out a Trump-era Environmental Protection Agency rule change that allowed for the sale of a 15% ethanol gasoline blend in the summer months.

The decision deals a significant blow to the ethanol industry and corn farmers who grow the crop from which the fuel additive is made. They had anticipated increased ethanol demand through year-round sales of the higher blend.

Most gasoline sold in the U.S. today is blended with 10% ethanol. Corn farmers and ethanol refiners have pushed for the government to allow the widespread sale of a 15% ethanol blend.

The Trump administration made the change to fulfill a campaign promise to Midwest farmers. The EPA under President Donald Trump announced the change in May 2019, ending a summer ban on the E15 blend. Provisions of the Clean Air Act have prohibited the sale of certain fuels with a higher volatility from June 1 through Sept. 15 to limit smog. Congress has allowed 10% ethanol, and the EPA in its 2019 ruling revised the interpretation of the exemption to federal law to include the 15% ethanol blend.

Corn prices have been trending downwards since February, with a sharp rise at the end of June (possibly associated with states dropping Covid-19 restrictions before we are ready).

However, on news of the court decision, corn is trending downwards again.

re: #79 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

The law prohibiting ethanol for regular gasoline over 10% in the summer is based on the idea that in the summer, the heat makes fuel more volatile (creates fumes, and both ethanol and gasoline are greenhouse gases, as well as dangerous).

The court found the EPA under Trump overstepped black letter law from Congress.

Opposing the farmers was an industry group which wishes to reduce ethanol.

Farmers and agribusiness argued ethanol reduces carbon in the air (no it doesn’t).

They can appeal to the full DC court, or ask Congress to change the law. The law itself has been found constitutional in the past.

Army news:

Sixty American soldiers who fought in the infamous Battle of Mogadishu will receive upgraded awards later this year for their valorous efforts 28 years ago in the brutal running battle through the streets of Somalia’s capital, the Army announced.

Army Special Operations Command officials will award 58 Silver Stars and two Distinguished Flying Crosses to soldiers who fought in that hourslong battle. The decision to upgrade the medals follows a review of awards ordered in 2020 by former Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, service officials said Friday. The Oct. 3, 1993, battle was immortalized in Mark Bowden’s best-selling 1999 book “Black Hawk Down” and its 2001 adaptation to film by director Ridley Scott.

The recipients of the awards will receive their upgraded medals in ceremonies hosted by the units that they were assigned to at the time of the battle, said Bonita Riddley, a USASOC spokeswoman. Riddley declined to provide the names of the soldiers whose awards will be upgraded or the units in which they served.

Ethyl (the modern definition, not the old definition of gasoline containing tetraethyl lead) was originally promoted as relief for the Oil Crisis of 1973, precipitated by Nixon’s response to the 1973 Arab-Israeli war (emergency strategic airlift of weapons to Israel), which immediately followed the 1973 stock market crash.

The response was the oil embargo, followed by Nixon’s mandate to include ethanol in gasoline.

Sixteen other countries also mandate ethanol in gasoline.

Interestingly, outside the Village of Gurley (two towns south) is the University of Nebraska High Plains Agricultural Laboratory. As part of a study started over one hundred years ago, they planted a field in corn every year, to study soil depletion of nutrients. They still are running that study, in over one hundred years there hasn’t been appreciable depletion of nutrients (though there has of topsoil due to tilling methods which are no longer used here).

Gasahol cannot be used in aircraft (aviation gasoline has none) because ethanol destroys plastic and composite parts.

Sounds like the last place I worked, only the reason for upgrades was because the Indian investors who ran the place as an independent hotel had to make certain upgrades as part of the agreement to become a Starwood franchise. But that pales in comparison to what happened last year…

The sentiment among the jackasses is very bootstrappy, such as the one who thinks that people suffering from drug addiction, mental illness, or both should just sort themselves out so they can get a spot in a homeless shelter. And when pointed out that it doesn’t work like that, proceeds to double down by insisting that if people want help then they have to “follow the rules.”

‘Two Americas’: Aid groups prepare for more women needing to cross state lines for abortions (NBC News, June 26, 2021)

Even if people can make the trip to a place where abortion remains legal, all that does is increase the strain on care in those places.

Last summer, Crystal Zaragoza drove a 15-year-old patient from her home in rural Georgia to Virginia, the nearest location where the teen could receive the abortion care she needed.

Zaragoza remained with the patient every step of the way, making the 650-mile trip in one, long 12-hour haul and staying with her at a hotel during and after the procedure before driving back.

Access Reproductive Care-Southeast, the abortion fund serving women in six states across the Southeast U.S. where Zaragoza works, provides what’s called “practical support” — helping women overcome significant financial, logistical and geographic hurdles beyond just paying for the abortion care itself. Zaragoza locates providers and facilitates lodging, escorts to and from clinics, child care and travel (often doing the driving herself).

Demand for the help groups like Zaragoza’s offer has grown in the years the states her organization serves — Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and Mississippi — have chipped away at abortion access. The pandemic has also had an impact. But the Supreme Court’s decision last month to consider the legality of Mississippi’s ban on most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy — a move pro-abortion-rights advocates say means the newly conservative bench is eyeing an end to Roe v. Wade — has practical support groups looking to ramp up fundraising, volunteering and staffing with even greater urgency.

I’ve been to Atami a few times… it’s a bowl-shaped town climbing up from the port area which is what caused the dramatic mudslides we see on the video since the slopes are steep.

Atami has hot springs, onsens and ryokans which make it a popular old-people holiday destination. There’s even a public hot-spring footbath just outside the railway station which I’ve indulged in myself more than once. It’s a short rail trip from central Tokyo on the shinkansen as well as a base for sightseeing trains running along the coast and down the Izu peninsula. There’s also a ferry port which provides passenger service out to some nearby islands for tourists and locals.

What that article in the Lies Angeles Times doesn’t say is the main reason for the explosion of homelessness is gentrification that is spiraling out of control. Lots of old housing stock has been demolished and replaced by “luxury” apartments and condos not subject to rent control.

The new “deluxe” apartments that were built across the street from me have single apartments unfurnished with a starting rent of $2250. One bedrooms go for $3000 and the penthouses on the top floor go for $5000. 3/4 of the building is vacant.

That “luxury” apartment replaced a set of bungalows where families were living with rent control protections.

Has the City Council done anything to reign in these developers? Nope. Not at all and Garcetti like every one of his predecessors is obsessed with gentrification and criminalizing homelessness.

So similar to American sovereign citizens, who believe that the 14th Amendment established a corporation that has been controlling America ever since. We’ve seen some of this overlap with Qanon nonsense, as they were, for a time, believing that Trump would be installed as the 19th President of the United States (following Ulysses S. re: #136 darthstar

Boston freeways suck most of the time. Closing an artery like 95 for an extended period on a holiday weekend? Might as well cancel that trip to the cape.

This particular shutdown was on the Western side of Boston, so access to the Cape wasn’t directly affected.

We had considered going to the Cape instead of Maine, but decided to go further north to avoid crowds. We were mostly successful.

We masked going into stores and ate outdoors. We were one of a handful who did mask at any point. Kids were seldom masked. Seeing license plates from as far away as Utah and Texas had us watching out for crowds precisely because those states aren’t vaccinating, and kids are going to be the vector for covid going into the fall. As it is, the South and midwest are seeing surges in cases, primarily to the delta variant.

Last thing we want is a breakthrough infection. Repeated exposures to crowds of unknown backgrounds who might have exposures higher than we’re willing to consider means more risk than we’re willing to take.

Bar Harbor is in Hancock County, and they’ve got a pretty high vaccination rate. But the tens of thousands coming into Hancock for Acadia are coming from all over. And they’ll carry covid with them. And spread it to those who then return home… spreading it elsewhere.

It’ll be worse in places like Southern Utah, where the Big 5 parks are located. St. George is already seeing a surge of cases. It’s not going to be pretty - especially as covid tears through communities all during the summer because people refuse to mask/vaccinate to stop spread of covid, especially the delta variant.

Signorelli retweeted the Palmer Report; I wouldn’t grant much credence to his speculation. Trump has spent a charmed life escaping justice for his criminal actions; how many times have we heard that a particular malfeasance will bring him down. Weisselberg knows that, unlike Manafort and Stone, he won’t be getting any kind of pardon, and, in any case, these are state charges, not federal charges. But Weisselberg will have the best attorneys money can buy and I wouldn’t count on his turning state’s evidence.

The problem for Trump is that even if Weisselberg claims it was all on him, the state can easily argue that Trump was still ultimately responsible.

Fiduciary rules means that Board members are responsible for signing tax forms, financial documents, etc. Trumpworld will claim that they were not acting recklessly in setting up business transactions to avoid/minimize tax, but the reality is that they engaged in willful misconduct to evade tax - a crime.

Board members: Trump, Junior, Eric, and Ivanka. All four should be held liable for this, beyond the CFO Weisselberg. There’s also their legal counsel who should also be held to account - and crime fraud exception should pierce the attorney client privilege for good measure.

Two sets of books - or at least a guidesheet showing what to tell IRS and NYS Tax and Fianance and another set of figures to tell investors and banks shows willful intent to deceive - fraud.

I know a lot of law twitter is split on whether NY will issue further indictments or whether this is the extent (Trump Org and Weisselberg are the sum total).

I think this is the start, as superseding indictments against Trump Org can then bring in the board and Trump directly. They are the ones ultimately responsible for all of this.

Oh, and for those who think this is politically motivated? Yeah, the delay in prosecuting Trump was politically motivated. That this is finally moving forward is the result of the lack of political involvement. The impediments to prosecution are out of the way.

I’m still waiting for the DOJ to overturn the rules about indicting sitting presidents. AG Garland has a lot of work to do, but that’s something he’s got to address. Unitary executive theory continues to do tremendous damage to democracy, and his job needs to help restore checks and balances. Congress too must insist on more oversight and power to act.

depending on when they got custody of the s/s and other details, they could have done this anytime because it didnt involve ‘the president’ personally.

so the presidency, in and of itself, probably had nothing to do with the timing of this, unless it’s seen the obvious first salvo.

From HuffPo.

Prosecutors “always try to get people to flip so they can go after the bigger target,” said Mary Trump.

and he *is* a responsible party w/r/t the irs payroll tax trust fund penalties.
proving willfullness won’t be too hard because they don’t need him to cooperate or admit anything. the standard is
- he ‘should have been aware’ (whether he claims he was or not)
and
